<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="13197798" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="nicholas-kristof" source="Orion">Nicholas Kristof</keyword> won't be on the ballot this November after being an early front runner to become <keyword id="11946286" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="oregon" source="Orion">Oregon</keyword>'s next governor.</li><li>The Oregon Supreme Court ruled that Kristof did not meet the state's residency requirement.</li></ul><p>The Oregon Supreme Court unanimously ruled on Thursday that former New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof cannot run for governor this November, formally ending his campaign that had upended the race. </p><p>"We recognize that relator [Kristof] has longstanding ties to Oregon, that he owns substantial property and operates a<br />farm here, and that the secretary did not question his current Oregon residency," the court wrote in its opinion. "But that is not the issue here."</p><p>Kristof, a Pulitzer-prize-winning journalist, left the Times last October as he began to seriously explore a gubernatorial run in his home state. Born in Yamhil, Oregon, Kristof painted his run as a way for Oregonians to reach outside the Democratic political establishment. But his run was dogged by questions over his residency.</p><p>"Today's Supreme Court ruling excluding me from the ballot is, of course, very disappointing," <a href="https://twitter.com/NickKristof/status/1494347110786818050?s=20&amp;t=HY8EK68h9V2V8fm9na4SQA">Kristof wrote on Twitter</a>. "But while I won't be on the ballot, I'm not giving up on our State."</p><p>At issue was whether Kristof met the three-year residency requirement to qualify for the ballot. Kristof pointed to his ownership of a farm in Yamhil, but Oregon Secretary of State Shemia Fagan determined that he had lived in New York since at least 2000 and didn't reestablish Oregon residency by November 2019. Fagan's office argued the fact Kristof voted in New York as recently as 2020 was yet another sign that he failed to meet the requirement.</p><p>Kristof took his fight to Oregon's high court, agreeing with Fagan that only its justices could issue the final word on what constitutes legal residency. His disqualification deprives the race of a big-name candidate who easily dwarfed other challengers in fundraising.</p><p>The Oregonian reports former House Speaker Tina Kotek and state Treasurer Tobias Read <a href="https://www.oregonlive.com/politics/2022/02/nick-kristof-cant-run-for-oregon-governor-supreme-court-rules.html">are now the frontrunners for the May primary</a>. Gov. Kate Brown, who is also a Democrat, is term-limited. </p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Kristof told NY Mag that he hasn't lost any friends to "<keyword id="13605020" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="pinot-noir" source="Orion">Pinot Noir</keyword> <keyword id="12633147" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="alcoholism" source="Orion">alcoholism</keyword>."</li><li>He also the "mortality" of alcoholism is "mostly driven by working-class Americans."</li></ul><p>Former New York Times columnist and disqualified <keyword id="11946286" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="oregon" source="Orion">Oregon</keyword> Gov. candidate Nicholas Kristof suggested that alcoholism is less of a mortality risk for upper-class Americans than for working-class Americans.</p><p>In an <a href="https://nymag.com/intelligencer/article/nicholas-kristof-oregon-governor.html">interview with New York Magazine</a> published on Tuesday, Kristof discussed his failed attempt to run for Governor of Oregon as a Democrat. After resigning his long-time columnist position at the Times, the state's Supreme Court <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/oregon-supreme-court-rules-nick-kristof-cant-run-for-governor-2022-2">ruled in February that he was not eligible to run</a>. </p><p>In fact, he'd voted in New York as recently as 2020.</p><p>"I didn't feel any burning ambition to be a politician whatsoever," he told the magazine after waging a gubernatorial campaign for 114 days and <a href="https://www.wweek.com/news/2021/12/28/nicholas-kristofs-fundraising-eclipses-25-million-mark/">raising at least $2.5 million</a>.</p><p>Kristof now maintains a farm in his hometown of Yamhill, Oregon, where he maintains a vineyard of Pinot Noir grapes. Speaking with the interviewer, the Pulitzer Prize winner spoke of his friends and neighbors in Oregon who had struggled with addiction and either overdosed or committed suicide, with one addict that he knew posting a suicide note on Facebook just that morning.</p><p>"I don't think that most people appreciate that most years, <keyword id="11994111" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="alcohol" source="Orion">alcohol</keyword> kills more people than drugs," he said. Kristof's platform <a href="https://www.nickfororegon.com/policy/leave-no-one-behind/">includes several mentions of addiction</a> as an issue he sought to combat as governor.</p><p>But he also quickly defended owning and operating a vineyard even while stating that he wants to lower rates of alcoholism. I don't think that good wine and cider add significantly to the problem," he also said.</p><p>Kristof added that he "wouldn't be in favor of barring alcohol in general" because "wine can be, or cider can be, a social good and can create social capital."</p><p>"Things that bring people together, I think, are good for society. I think alcohol can do that, and I think that's true of wine and cider," he said, adding that he took the interviewer's point that "some people start with nice Pinot Noirs" before descending into alcoholism.</p><p>A <a href="https://news.gallup.com/poll/184358/drinking-highest-among-educated-upper-income-americans.aspx">2015 Gallup poll</a> found that 78% of upper-income Americans report consuming alcohol at least occasionally, while just 45% of those making less than $30,000 said the same. That same poll found that college graduates were far more likely to consume alcohol than those with a high school education or less.</p><p>One study <a href="https://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2015/03/17/393554628/income-affects-how-genes-play-a-role-in-drinking-problems/">reported by NPR in 2015</a> found that lower-income people have much higher variance in alcohol consumption than other income brackets, with some drinking heavily and others notes at all. By contrast, higher-income people were more likely to drink, but more likely to moderate their consumption.</p><p>And at least <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4258771/">one recent meta-analysis</a> found that deaths attributable to alcohol consumption occurred at a much higher rate among those on the lower end of the socioeconomic spectrum.</p><p>Kristof also told the interviewer that he once ran into a village in Darfur asking if anyone had been shot, only to quickly rebuff an elderly man who'd been shot in the leg.</p><p>"I knew immediately that I could do better, that I could find a case more compelling," he told the magazine. "I said, 'Are there any kids who've been shot?' I felt terrible."</p>

"But I have spent a lifetime shining a light in the darkest corners of the globe," he said of his journalism career. </p><p>Kristof, who grew up on a farm in Oregon, had been on leave from the Times since June as he weighed a run for office, the paper <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2021/10/14/business/media/nicholas-kristof-oregon-governor.html">reported</a> earlier in October. He officially left in October. </p><p>Kristof, a 37-year veteran at the Times, worked as a reporter, editor, and columnist, and won two Pulitzer Prizes during his tenure. </p>

<p>Expansion of health insurance to everyone has been a primary liberal goal for decades.</p>
<p>And with <keyword id="6579869" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="ObamaCare">Obamacare</keyword> on the verge of implementation (things really got going last year) that outcome is closer than ever.</p>
<p>So in that context here are two interesting tweets from liberal NYT columnist Nick Kristoff:</p>

<p>The "Oregon Study" he's referring to is a landmark study that came out just this week (published in the New England Journal of Medicine) which found that expanded Medicaid may help the financial well being of those who get coverage, <a href="http://oregonhealthstudy.org/results/">but that there aren't very big physical health results</a>.</p>
<p>This isn't a big surprise to people who have followed the debate closely for a long time.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2013/05/05/opinion/sunday/douthat-what-health-insurance-doesnt-do.html?smid=tw-share&amp;_r=0">As Ross Douthat points out in the NYT</a>, there have been studies showing this exact phenomenon before:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">IN one of the most famous studies of health insurance, conducted across the 1970s, thousands of participants were divided into five groups, with each receiving a different amount of insurance coverage. The study, run by the RAND Corporation, tracked the medical care each group sought out, and not surprisingly found that people with more comprehensive coverage tended to make use of it, visiting the doctor and checking into the hospital more often than people with less generous insurance.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">But the study also tracked the health outcomes of each group, and there the results were more surprising: With a few modest exceptions, the level of insurance had no significant effect on the participants’ actual wellness.</p>
<p>That health care coverage does not necessarily equate to better health does not undermine the importance of health care. <a href="http://krugman.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/05/02/fire-insurance-is-worthless/">Paul Krugman snarked this week</a> that fire insurance must be worthless, since it doesn't prevent fires.</p>
<p>Still, the latest study has revived the notion that perhaps health care should be more focused around preventing catastrophic financial outcomes, rather than providing a means for people to see the doctor more on someone else's tab. Alas, with Obamacare about to be implemented, that debate might be irrelevant.</p>

Pornhub <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/pornhub-visa-mastercard-major-changes-platform-rules-revenge-porn-2020-12">has since announced plans</a> to verify all the content on its platform.</strong></li></ul><p>In a new interview, outgoing Mastercard CEO Ajay Banga explained that the company's decision to cut off the popular pornography website Pornhub was a measure of applying legal standards rather than moral ones.</p><p>"We went back and we looked, and we found actually instances where clearly the legal standard of what should be allowed on Pornhub had been crossed," Banga <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/12/21/opinion/sway-kara-swisher-ajay-banga.html">said in a podcast interview with The New York Times</a>. "So we went back to Pornhub and said, 'Sorry, you've crossed the legal standard.'"</p><p>Banga added: "Porn's not illegal. It is certain kinds of porn that are illegal. So child porn is, and that's what we saw. That's why we pulled out."</p><p>Visa and Mastercard launched investigations following <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/12/04/opinion/sunday/pornhub-rape-trafficking.html">a Times column by Nick Kristof</a> in early December that alleged Pornhub was hosting recordings of assaults on unconscious women and girls. One week later, both companies pulled payment services from Pornhub.</p><p>Banga stressed the importance of the distinction between morality and legality, saying morality-based decisions were a "slippery slope" for his company.</p><p>"For example, I've had people ask me why couldn't Mastercard cut off merchants who sell guns?" he said. "That's really interesting, because, you know, Walmart sells ammunition, guns, and diapers, and I don't know what you bought, so I don't know how to cut it off. "Different states legalized the sale of marijuana, but we can't allow our cards to be used to buy them, because the federal government hasn't legalized it," he said. "And so we follow that standard, and that's what we've been doing all this time."</p><p>As for why Mastercard didn't move to investigate Pornhub sooner, Banga said it couldn't find illegal content.</p><p>Pornhub denied the allegations in Kristof's column and has since announced several major changes. The site no longer allows anyone to upload videos, and it requires anyone uploading to go through a verification process. Milak posted a time of 1 minute, 50.37 seconds at the FINA World Championships, topping Phelps' previous record of 1:51.51.</p><p>On Friday, at the world championships, American swimmer Caeleb Dressel topped Phelps' 10-year-old record in the 100-meter butterfly, posting a time of 49.50, beating Phelps' previous record of 49.82.</p><p>Phelps handled the news graciously in both cases.</p><p><span>"As frustrated as I am to see that record go down, I couldn't be happier to see how he did it," <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2019/07/24/sports/kristof-milak-michael-phelps-record.html">Phelps told The New York Times</a>&#xa0;after Milak's race. "That kid's last 100 was incredible. Two long-standing Michael Phelps world records have been broken in one week, and he handled it graciously

Sherrod Brown earlier this year introduced a bill with similar language to the changes in the GOP tax bill.</strong></li></ul><hr /><p><br />As the American public digests the passage of the Republican tax bill in the Senate, one provision of the bill has seen particular derision Saturday morning.</p><p>Opponents of the bill, the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA), are pointing to a provision they say gives a tax break to private jet owners.</p><p>"<span>Middle class families all over America finally get the tax relief they've been pleading for regarding their private jets," tweeted Nick Kristof, the New York Times columnist.</span></p><p><span>"I can't believe this is real, a tax break for <strong>private jet</strong> owners," Roberto Ferdman, a correspondent at Vice, said in a tweet with more than 15,000 retweets as of Saturday morning.</span></p><p><span>The <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/tax-reform-trump-republican-plan-gives-break-to-private-jet-planes-2017-11">change is actually technical one</a>. The language of the bill would exempt "aircraft owners" from taxes on the "maintenance and support of the aircraft owner's aircraft or flights on the aircraft owner's aircraft."</span></p><p><span>But its purpose is to prevent private air charter companies from getting hit with what's known as the "ticket tax" on flights. The tax was originally designed to apply to commercial flights, while a separate gas tax applied to "general aviation" flights like private charters.</span></p><p><span>Due to some language confusion in the tax code, however, the IRS began imposing the "ticket tax" on private flights, which has <a href="https://www.nbaa.org/admin/taxes/federal/fet/20160923-nbaa-legal-brief-asserts-need-for-irs-consistency-clarity-on-federal-excise-tax.php">caused a long-running battle</a> between operators of the charter companies and the government.</span></p><p><span>The TCJA language is meant to clarify the discrepancy and ensure that the ticket tax is not applied to private flights. According to a letter in 2016 from the Joint Committee on Taxation, the change would lose less than $500,000 in federal revenue over 10 years.</span></p><p><span>In fact, the language is similar to a bill introduced by Democrat Sen. Sherrod Brown of Ohio and co-sponsored by Republican Sen. Rob Portman, also from Ohio. People are furious that the GOP tax bill has a break for private jet owners - but it's not what it seems

They found seven shot gun shells, and according to federal <keyword id="6355470" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Law">law</keyword>, he must now spend 15 years behind bars, Nick Kristof of <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2013/08/11/opinion/sunday/kristof-help-thy-neighbor-and-go-straight-to-prison.html?hp&amp;_r=2&amp;&amp;gwh=65AB16FF3F69A739C0F733D8D770C002">The New York Times</a> writes.</p>
<p>Under the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Armed_Career_Criminal_Act">Armed Career Criminal Act</a>, ex-felons can't posses guns or ammunition. Even though Young didn't own a shotgun (or any other weapon) to match the shells, U.S. attorney William Killian prosecuted him anyway. The judge called the case "Dickensian," but federal law tied his hands. He gave Young 15 years in federal <keyword id="6362397" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Prison">prison</keyword>.</p>
<p>"This sentence is not so much a punishment for the present <keyword id="39494" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Crime">crime</keyword> as it is a punishment for your history of crimes," Judge Curtis Collier said, according to <a href="http://www.timesfreepress.com/news/2013/jul/21/a-few-shotgun-shells-landed-a-man-15/">The Chattanooga Times Free Press</a>.</p>
<p>State authorities eventually dismissed the burglary charges that allowed police to search Young's home.</p>
<p>Young found the shotgun shells while helping his elderly neighbor sell her dead husband's belongings.</p>
<p>He then set them aside so his kid's wouldn't find them.</p>
<p>Young, now 43, committed his past crimes — none of which involved a gun — as a young man. After his release in 1996, he married, worked 6 days a week, and raised four children in Texas.</p>
<p>"It wasn't my intent ... I don't think I deserve to grow up without my family, and I don't think my family deserves to grow up with me," Young said, reported the The Times Free Press.</p>
<p>Regardless, according to Kristof's calculations, the <keyword id="106013" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="federal-government">federal government</keyword> will spend about $415,000 keeping him in prison for the next 15 years.</p>
