"We recognize that relator [Kristof] has longstanding ties to Oregon, that he owns substantial property and operates a farm here, and that the secretary did not question his current Oregon residency," the court wrote in its opinion. "But that is not the issue here."Kristof, a Pulitzer-prize-winning journalist, left the Times last October as he began to seriously explore a gubernatorial run in his home state. Born in Yamhil, Oregon, Kristof painted his run as a way for Oregonians to reach outside the Democratic political establishment. But his run was dogged by questions over his residency."Today's Supreme Court ruling excluding me from the ballot is, of course, very disappointing," <a href="https://twitter.com/NickKristof/status/1494347110786818050?s=20&amp;t=HY8EK68h9V2V8fm9na4SQA">Kristof wrote on Twitter</a>. "But while I won't be on the ballot, I'm not giving up on our State."At issue was whether Kristof met the three-year residency requirement to qualify for the ballot. Kristof pointed to his ownership of a farm in Yamhil, but Oregon Secretary of State Shemia Fagan determined that he had lived in New York since at least 2000 and didn't reestablish Oregon residency by November 2019. Fagan's office argued the fact Kristof voted in New York as recently as 2020 was yet another sign that he failed to meet the requirement.Kristof took his fight to Oregon's high court, agreeing with Fagan that only its justices could issue the final word on what constitutes legal residency. His disqualification deprives the race of a big-name candidate who easily dwarfed other challengers in fundraising.The Oregonian reports former House Speaker Tina Kotek and state Treasurer Tobias Read <a href="https://www.oregonlive.com/politics/2022/02/nick-kristof-cant-run-for-oregon-governor-supreme-court-rules.html">are now the frontrunners for the May primary</a>. That same poll found that college graduates were far more likely to consume alcohol than those with a high school education or less.One study <a href="https://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2015/03/17/393554628/income-affects-how-genes-play-a-role-in-drinking-problems/">reported by NPR in 2015</a> found that lower-income people have much higher variance in alcohol consumption than other income brackets, with some drinking heavily and others notes at all. By contrast, higher-income people were more likely to drink, but more likely to moderate their consumption.And at least <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4258771/">one recent meta-analysis</a> found that deaths attributable to alcohol consumption occurred at a much higher rate among those on the lower end of the socioeconomic spectrum.Kristof also told the interviewer that he once ran into a village in Darfur asking if anyone had been shot, only to quickly rebuff an elderly man who'd been shot in the leg."I knew immediately that I could do better, that I could find a case more compelling," he told the magazine. Expansion of health insurance to everyone has been a primary liberal goal for decades.
And with <keyword id="6579869" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="ObamaCare">Obamacare</keyword> on the verge of implementation (things really got going last year) that outcome is closer than ever.
So in that context here are two interesting tweets from liberal NYT columnist Nick Kristoff:

The "Oregon Study" he's referring to is a landmark study that came out just this week (published in the New England Journal of Medicine) which found that expanded Medicaid may help the financial well being of those who get coverage, <a href="http://oregonhealthstudy.org/results/">but that there aren't very big physical health results</a>.
This isn't a big surprise to people who have followed the debate closely for a long time.
<a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2013/05/05/opinion/sunday/douthat-what-health-insurance-doesnt-do.html?smid=tw-share&amp;_r=0">As Ross Douthat points out in the NYT</a>, there have been studies showing this exact phenomenon before:
IN one of the most famous studies of health insurance, conducted across the 1970s, thousands of participants were divided into five groups, with each receiving a different amount of insurance coverage. The study, run by the RAND Corporation, tracked the medical care each group sought out, and not surprisingly found that people with more comprehensive coverage tended to make use of it, visiting the doctor and checking into the hospital more often than people with less generous insurance.
But the study also tracked the health outcomes of each group, and there the results were more surprising: With a few modest exceptions, the level of insurance had no significant effect on the participants’ actual wellness.
That health care coverage does not necessarily equate to better health does not undermine the importance of health care. <a href="http://krugman.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/05/02/fire-insurance-is-worthless/">Paul Krugman snarked this week</a> that fire insurance must be worthless, since it doesn't prevent fires.
Still, the latest study has revived the notion that perhaps health care should be more focused around preventing catastrophic financial outcomes, rather than providing a means for people to see the doctor more on someone else's tab. Alas, with Obamacare about to be implemented, that debate might be irrelevant.

NICK KRISTOF: We Liberals May Have Overstated How Great Health Insurance Is

Influencers from "The Bachelor" contestant <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@itskendalllong/video/7132640844674272554?is_copy_url=1&amp;is_from_webapp=v1">Kendall Long</a> (196K TikTok followers) to actor and "Big Brother" alum <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@nickuhas/video/7133293044950043950?is_from_webapp=v1&amp;item_id=7133293044950043950&amp;mode=desktop&amp;refer=embed&amp;referer_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.insider.com%2F&amp;referer_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.insider.com%2Fpost%2Fpreview%3Fpost_id%3D6307b9c1dda1a5476a739b73&amp;referer_video_id=7133293044950043950">Nick Uhas</a> (7.3 million TikTok followers) and model and presenter <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/ChaqbdOMLoQ/?hl=en">Laura Wells</a> (83.4K Instagram followers) have posted videos to Instagram and TikTok promoting the company's research, using variations of the #partner hashtag this week. Colossal previously raised <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/science/2021/sep/13/firm-bring-back-woolly-mammoth-from-extinction" target="_blank" rel="noopener">$15 million to revive the woolly mammoth</a> with genetic engineering and reintroduce it to the Arctic tundra, 10,000 years after its last relative roamed the land. Earlier this year, the Texas-based biotech company raised an <a href="https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20220309005140/en/Colossal-Secures-60M-Series-A-Funding-To-Advance-Genetic-Engineering-and-De-extinction-Technologies">additional $60 million</a> to advance "de-extinction" technologies and announced its plans to revive the Tasmanian tiger, extinct since 1936, and return the animal to the forests and grasslands of Tasmania. Some in the scientific community are skeptical of Colossal's attempts to use influencers to sway public opinion around its projects."A research project is not meant to be a brand. You're not trying to sell something," Dr. Belinda Barnet, a senior lecturer in media at Swinburne University, <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2022/aug/25/us-firm-behind-tasmanian-tiger-de-extinction-plan-uses-influencers-to-promote-research" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told The Guardian</a>. "So, the fact that this has happened should tell us something about research culture, and about how competitive funding has become," she said.While the company's partnerships with social media influencers may be unusual, it's also not the first time the firm has enlisted influencers to drum up publicity. Long, who appeared on Season 22 of "The Bachelor" and describes herself as a science-lover and curiosity-enthusiast in her social media bios, made multiple promotional TikToks for Colossal in the fall of 2021. Long made #ads about the company's research, and discussed why Colossal's plans to "re-birth" the woolly mammoth wouldn't result in a real-life "Jurassic Park" in an <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@itskendalllong/video/7015752763162234118?is_from_webapp=1&amp;sender_device=pc&amp;web_id=7120698119249577518" target="_blank" rel="noopener">October 2021</a> video, calling the research instead a "solution." Colossal CEO Ben Lamm said in a statement that the company is working with influencers so it can "educate the public" and "reach younger generations." Lamm said that using social media is critical to reaching younger audiences. "It is not about getting support from influencers, but in actually getting the message out." Despite being publicized to millions of viewers, scientists remain divided on the merits of de-extinction projects. The field is <a href="https://theconversation.com/should-we-bring-back-the-thylacine-we-asked-5-experts-188894" target="_blank" rel="noopener">highly controversial</a>, raising concerns around cost, morality, and feasibility. Some argue reviving animals such as the woolly mammoth has <a href="https://e360.yale.edu/features/the_case_against_de-extinction_its_a_fascinating_but_dumb_idea" target="_blank" rel="noopener">conservation and biodiversity benefits</a>, while others insist the idea is "<a href="https://e360.yale.edu/features/the_case_against_de-extinction_its_a_fascinating_but_dumb_idea" target="_blank" rel="noopener">fascinating but dumb</a>" — negatively impacting endangered species by decreasing resources and diverting scientists from working on projects that meaningfully protect the planet.Professor Kristofer Helgen, chief scientist at the Australian Museum, <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2022/aug/25/us-firm-behind-tasmanian-tiger-de-extinction-plan-uses-influencers-to-promote-research" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told The Guardian</a> he was convinced, based on the animal's molecular biology, that the project was doomed to fail. "So we went back to Pornhub and said, 'Sorry, you've crossed the legal standard.'"Banga added: "Porn's not illegal. It is certain kinds of porn that are illegal. The language of the bill would exempt "aircraft owners" from taxes on the "maintenance and support of the aircraft owner's aircraft or flights on the aircraft owner's aircraft."But its purpose is to prevent private air charter companies from getting hit with what's known as the "ticket tax" on flights. The tax was originally designed to apply to commercial flights, while a separate gas tax applied to "general aviation" flights like private charters.Due to some language confusion in the tax code, however, the IRS began imposing the "ticket tax" on private flights, which has <a href="https://www.nbaa.org/admin/taxes/federal/fet/20160923-nbaa-legal-brief-asserts-need-for-irs-consistency-clarity-on-federal-excise-tax.php">caused a long-running battle</a> between operators of the charter companies and the government.The TCJA language is meant to clarify the discrepancy and ensure that the ticket tax is not applied to private flights. According to a letter in 2016 from the Joint Committee on Taxation, the change would lose less than $500,000 in federal revenue over 10 years.In fact, the language is similar to a bill introduced by Democrat Sen. Sherrod Brown of Ohio and co-sponsored by Republican Sen. Rob Portman, also from Ohio. They found seven shot gun shells, and according to federal <keyword id="6355470" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Law">law</keyword>, he must now spend 15 years behind bars, Nick Kristof of <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2013/08/11/opinion/sunday/kristof-help-thy-neighbor-and-go-straight-to-prison.html?hp&amp;_r=2&amp;&amp;gwh=65AB16FF3F69A739C0F733D8D770C002">The New York Times</a> writes.
Under the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Armed_Career_Criminal_Act">Armed Career Criminal Act</a>, ex-felons can't posses guns or ammunition. Even though Young didn't own a shotgun (or any other weapon) to match the shells, U.S. attorney William Killian prosecuted him anyway. The judge called the case "Dickensian," but federal law tied his hands. He gave Young 15 years in federal <keyword id="6362397" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Prison">prison</keyword>.
"This sentence is not so much a punishment for the present <keyword id="39494" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Crime">crime</keyword> as it is a punishment for your history of crimes," Judge Curtis Collier said, according to <a href="http://www.timesfreepress.com/news/2013/jul/21/a-few-shotgun-shells-landed-a-man-15/">The Chattanooga Times Free Press</a>.
State authorities eventually dismissed the burglary charges that allowed police to search Young's home.
Young found the shotgun shells while helping his elderly neighbor sell her dead husband's belongings.
He then set them aside so his kid's wouldn't find them.
Young, now 43, committed his past crimes — none of which involved a gun — as a young man. After his release in 1996, he married, worked 6 days a week, and raised four children in Texas.
"It wasn't my intent ... I don't think I deserve to grow up without my family, and I don't think my family deserves to grow up with me," Young said, reported the The Times Free Press.
Regardless, according to Kristof's calculations, the <keyword id="106013" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="federal-government">federal government</keyword> will spend about $415,000 keeping him in prison for the next 15 years.
