<ul class="summary-list"><li>Quant giant D.E. Shaw has hired people from non-traditional finance backgrounds for decades.</li><li>The firm's head of recruiting told BI he looks for certain traits when hiring, including "learning agility."</li></ul>It was 2011, and Tim Willenken had just spent the past 12 years — four as an undergrad and eight in a doctoral program — preparing to be a philosophy professor.There was just one problem: He didn't want to be in academia anymore.He "had no idea where to start" looking for a job, knowing just about the professions he had been exposed to in graduate school — doctors, lawyers, and professors, he told Business Insider.To learn about what else was out there, he went through his Facebook friends list and called people working at companies in roles he hadn't heard of before. He eventually spoke to an old college friend he knew through debate club who had previously worked at D.E. Shaw."That was the first time I'd heard of the firm," said Willenken, a senior vice president in the D.E. Shaw's corporate development unit. "I think I'd had one conversation about what a hedge fund was when I applied." D.E. Shaw, started in 1988 by now-billionaire computer scientist David Shaw in New York, is remarkably secretive even for the guarded world of hedge funds, but what little has leaked paints the manager as being on the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/first-half-quant-returns-from-de-shaw-two-sigma-renaissance-2024-7">cutting edge</a> of quant finance.While working at the $60 billion fund is now the goal for many finance-focused students at <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/de-shaws-summer-internship-recruitment-interview-tips-2023-4">top universities</a> and a destination for quants, the manager has also maintained its long history of hiring non-traditional talent. Early hires included crime fiction writer Charles Ardai and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, and the manager now boasts on its website that employees come "by way of academia, Silicon Valley, or an NGO."Other hedge funds are also hoping to convince academics, technologists, and others to join their ranks instead of staying in their field or working in Big Tech as they grow and compete to have best-in-class talent rosters. These offers are not just down to compensation, which is handsome at hedge funds.The firm's head of recruiting, Jeremy Reff, a former English major at Harvard who has worked at the fund for nearly two decades, is in charge of continuing and improving on this tradition of non-traditional hires. While some who join D.E. Shaw may require additional training or a longer runway to get up to speed, he said, the return on these hires outstrips the costs."There are benefits to having a beginner's mindset," he said, and the firm's expansion into different investment strategy types, such as <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/the-d-e-shaw-group-raises-combined-1-1-billion-for-two-new-funds-focused-on-private-market-opportunities-301746589.html">private investing</a> and discretionary global macro, can be attributed to the curious nature of these hires.  The reality, though, is that a lot of roles don't have exact equivalents to other parts of the industry, so people from outside finance are not on that much different footing as those with more traditional finance backgrounds, he said. "We are looking for traits and attributes more than one particular skill," he said.<h2 id="1ec22262-b503-4604-bafe-92fe9e0ecb78">Mentorship, prerequisites, and 'learning agility'</h2>While the firm is happy to invest ample time in training talented recruits, certain roles still require certain skills. For example, knowing how to program is a must if you're applying to be a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/wall-street-top-technology-projects-goldman-blackstone-morgan-stanley-2024-8#d-e-shaw-s-generative-ai-approach-encourages-programmers-to-build-their-own-tools-4">software engineer</a>, Reff said.The firm's learning and development team is structured to get people up to speed on financial markets and where the firm sits within them. The rotational associates program lets new hires work for different teams in different roles so new employees can get a sense of where they fit best.The real learning happens on the job though."The only real way to learn is to get your hands dirty," Willenken said.Reff's job is to find people who can keep up. The interview process is designed to test potential at the firm, including creativity and "learning agility.""There are thousands of indicators for success that we use," he said. "No one is hired solely based on their résumé."   The firm used to consider <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2019/09/david-e-shaw-college-donations.html">standardized test scores</a> as part of its hiring process but has phased them out over the last few years. "They aren't predictive of success," Reff said.The résumés are generally reviewed blindly, meaning names are not attached to the qualifications and experience.   The process has changed significantly since Reff was hired in 2006, two years after graduating from undergrad; he recalled speaking to his interviewer for a while about the Spanish novel "Don Quixote." Now, it's a more structured process, incorporating industry best practices with the firm's internal metrics and "secret sauce."  "We don't get it 100% correct, of course, and are always tinkering with it," he said.<h2 id="067dcf50-7ee4-431a-b455-7435b3922f71">Academics, doctors, and veterans</h2>The end result is that driven people find their place in the firm, one way or another. Ana Díaz Rivero, a quantitative researcher, "never had an interest in finance," but wanted to leave academia after getting her doctorate in physics.Her role allowed her to "continue pursuing academic research without being in academia," she said."A lot of the skills and tools we use are very similar. The principles behind how we do research are very similar," she said.For those who have joined the firm after working in a non-finance field, incorporating past abilities and skills into their current roles was a big selling point.For some, the biggest carryover from their former careers is habits they learned, like Lindsay Temes's military-trained punctuality and organizational skills. For others, like Dr. Omar Ali, a healthcare specialist on the fundamental equities team, there's more overlap.<div type="image" title="Lindsey Temes sits at a table, writing on a notepad" height="2667" width="4000" msid="114980202" hostid="261" sizebytes="1074078"></div>Temes, a vice president in the COO Group, spent more than a decade in the Air Force before leaving in 2018 to attend graduate programs at Harvard and MIT.As a Pat Tillman Foundation scholar, a program named for the late former football player-turned-soldier that covers veterans' education expenses, she was introduced to D.E. Shaw and found it was a place where she "would be valued and heard."  She overcame some initial hesitancy about financial services thanks to employees from non-traditional backgrounds who stressed that her role wasn't going to be "static."  A former doctor for the UK's National Health Service, Ali said that "the day-to-day is certainly different than working in medicine," but the jump to finance wasn't as daunting as it can seem from the outside.<div type="image" title="Dr. Omar Ali smiles while sitting in a conference room" height="1525" width="2000" msid="114980199" hostid="261" sizebytes="230880"></div>He said firms that focus on their employees' talents and not on fitting people into specific boxes make the transition easy."My real value is not my ability to navigate a balance sheet, it's my practical expertise in the field and my background," he said.<h2 id="900d026f-556a-4784-8b67-9629236daaba">Don't want to 'win' on compensation</h2>Hedge funds are known for paying their employees well, especially compared to fields like academia or government work.Job postings show positions such as a software developer making $200,000 a year, and a summer internship on the fundamental research team for college students is offering $18,000 a month in salary, plus overtime, along with a $10,000 signing bonus, a $10,000 housing allowance, and thousands of dollars in stipends for "self-study" materials and technology equipment.But Reff said, "I never want to win on solely compensation," and those who have joined from outside finance say they were drawn to the firm for a number of reasons beyond pay.Díaz Rivero and Ali knew of D.E. Shaw Research, a computational drug discovery company led by Shaw, which put the hedge fund on their radar. Willenken, the doctor of philosophy, appreciated that his role included the parts of academia he enjoyed most without the siloed approach academic research roles typically require.Timelines are tighter and there's more collaboration on the corporate development team, he said, and "the questions are a little more concrete than in philosophy." But he is using the same muscles to search for answers to questions that don't have easy answers.   "There's not a lot of low-hanging fruit. If there was an obvious answer, someone would have thought of it by now," he said.Reff has a shorthand he uses with potential recruits to describe the firm: "These are a bunch of people who really want to get things right."  "I think that's very attractive to people in a lot of different fields," he said.

Subramanian who is using the NGO as a corporate façade to file frivolous litigation. </li></ul>Indian billionaire and founder of IT giant <keyword id="10862" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Wipro">Wipro</keyword>, <keyword id="6419840" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Azim-Premji">Azim Premji</keyword>, and his wife are facing allegations of financial fraud alongside two others. But, the Supreme Court has put a stay on the criminal proceedings against him and declared that Premji won’t have to physically appear in court on December 19. This comes after the Karnataka High Court dismissed petitions against the summons issued to Premji and four others for alleged criminal breach of trust and illegal transfer of funds. The case was registered after the Chennai-based non-governmental organisation (NGO) India Awake for Transparency accused them of illegally transferring funds from 3 different companies to a new company. “The issue is limited to amalgamation, your lords,” senior advocate AM Singhvi representing Azim Premji told the bench headed by SK Kaul. According to him, the allegations made in the complaints, even if they are taken at their face value and accepted in their entirety, do not prima facie constitute any offences or make out a case. Allegations of financial fraud against Azim Premji Premji, the IT czar of India, is generally lauded for being the man <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/azim-premji-gives-more-the-charity-than-his-net-worth/articleshow/71306177.cms">who gave away half of his net worth to charity. </a> However, India Awake for Transparency accused Premji of siphoning away ₹13,602 crores from three shadow banks — Napean Trading &amp; Investment Company, Vidya Investment &amp; Trading Company, and Regal Investments &amp; Trading Company — in the form of gifts between 2010 and 2012. The three companies were eventually merged into a fourth privately-owned trust called Hasham Investment and Trading Company. This gave the accused control over the remaining assets of the company worth ₹31,342 crore and it’s been losing money ever since. According to the plea, filed by a businessman in Bangalore, these actions violate several sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Prevention of Corruption Act. Alleged violations under the Prevention of Corruption Act: <ul><li>Sections 34, 120B: criminal conspiracy</li><li>Section 34: acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention </li><li>Section 409: criminal breach of trust </li></ul>A summons was subsequently issued by an Additional City Civil and Sessions Court in January. Premji, his wife, Yaseem Premji and Pagalthivarthi Srinivasan initially approached the Karnataka High Court with petitions questioning the summons. However, they were shortly dismissed. According to Premji, the complaints against him are motivated by a personal vendetta. He believes that India Awake for Transparency is being used by a man called R. Casablanca (Morocco), Apr 12 (AFP) A small van zips through the streets of Casablanca to deliver food to single mothers, as economic paralysis caused by the coronavirus crisis puts pressure on Morocco's poor."We have to be quick," says Bouchra, a coordinator from NGO INSAF who is supervising the day's rounds.The lockdown to curb the spread of the COVID-19 disease, and a lack of work and money, are creating tensions in the working-class neighbourhoods of the country's economic capital.Each year, INSAF helps over 500 young women who have fallen pregnant out of wedlock -- viewed as a "sin" by a society marked by religious conservatism.The organisation usually supports the mothers with medical and psychological assistance, tries to mediate between them and their families and helps find jobs for the pregnant women.But that all changed when the coronavirus pandemic struck, with the first distress calls arriving some 15 days after the government declared a health emergency around mid-March."The epidemic touches everyone, but single mothers are the most vulnerable", INSAF head Meriem Othmani says."Their families reject them and they have to manage alone with their baby, without any support." The organisation phones a few minutes before the van's arrival to arrange a pick-up point on the street near the women's homes. These authorities would distribute them to the personnel working in the frontline to help control the outspread, it added. "The company hopes that its contribution of masks and hygiene products including soaps, hand-washes, sanitizers, and rubs would help all volunteers and workers stay safe during these tough times," the statement noted. The death toll in India due to the pandemic rose to 308 on Monday after 35 new fatalities were reported, while the number of cases climbed to 9,152, according to the Union Health Ministry. Google's chief Sundar Pichai donates ₹5 crore to Indian NGO for fighting Coronavirus

By Seema Hakhu Kachru Houston, Apr 26 () An Indian-American nonprofit organisation has distributed 30,000 masks and other medical supplies to first responders, hospitals and county officials in Houston to combat the spread of the coronavirus pandemic as the city prepares for a 30-day mandate to wear a face cover in public.Sewa International's Houston chapter on Saturday distributed 30,000 masks, gloves, and 20,000 ounces of hand sanitiser in an "invitation only" drive-through event.In an executive order signed on Sunday, Harris county Judge Lina Hidalgo has directed all residents to wear some kind of face covering in public for 30 days, starting from Monday. It will apply for any person over the age of 10. There is a USD 1,000 fine for violating of the order."The event of distributing PPEs to about 100 agencies on Saturday was very gratifying and we will continue this drive on weekly basis," Gitesh Desai, President of the Sewa Houston chapter said."Sewa has set up eight regional non-medical helplines for a coordinated national response, to offer information and resources about travel, health, visas and visa status," he said.The helplines will also provide information about delivery of masks to first responders and those at the frontlines, delivering food, groceries, and medicines to those who need them, helping seniors in the community with medical advice and assisting stranded students with accommodation needs and food, he said.The event was attended by Houston Consul General of India Aseem Mahajan, Congresswomen Houston City Council Member Martha Castex-Tatum and Councilman Edward Pollard for Houston City Council District J."We are proud of these activities and efforts of the Indo-American organisations and individuals to support their cities and communities to combat this pandemic. By Lalit K Jha Washington, Apr 24 () An Indian-American NGO has raised USD 1 million to fight hunger in India and the United States amid the the coronavirus pandemic.This translates to 4,700,000 meals for people in the United States and ration kits for 106,000 migrant workers in India that will last them seven to 10 days, said M R Rangaswami, founder and chairman of the board of NGO Indiaspora. It was a volunteer group in San Jose, California that made the last donation of USD 5,000 after which the campaign fund crossed USD 1 million. "It is so heartening to see that this is just a group of regular Indian Americans, who are a volunteer group, and are gifting to different non-profits and charities. They on their own decided that this was the best cause," Rangaswami, an investor, entrepreneur and philanthropist, told .The money raised by Indiaspora through its 'ChaloGive for COVID-19' online campaign will be used to provide relief directly to vulnerable population in both the countries. Contributions given are sent to two beneficiary organisations, Feeding America in the US and Goonj in India. Feeding America is using the contributions to bolster its nationwide network of 200 food banks. Goonj is using the funds to provide food, dry ration and hygiene kits to displaced migrants in parts of eighteen states in India. In this hour of coronavirus pandemic that has hit both the United States and India, the Indian-American community has resoundingly shown up across the country, said Rangaswami. "It's not just donations to Indiaspora. The Sikhs feeding people through langar, young children making masks for healthcare workers, SEWA International making plasma donation matching. It has been an outpouring from across the country, which I have never seen before," said the California-based venture capitalist, who has closely following communities' philanthropic activities for long time. Such an outpouring of support was last time seen during the Gujarat earthquake in 2001, but that time the call was given by the then US President Bill Clinton and Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, he said. One of the donations that helped Indiaspora cross the USD 1 million threshold came from Bay-area based volunteer group Aram Sei, whose vision is to support grassroots charities worldwide in the areas of education and healthcare. Indian-American NGO raises USD 1 million for coronavirus relief work in US, India

US Ambassador to India Richard Verma said Indian Government’s crackdown on Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) will have a chilling effect on freedom of speech and expression.
 

	He expressed his concerns over Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Government’s action of reducing operational space of NGOs-like Ford Foundation and Greenpeace-in the country.
 

	Verma said if the government did not like the reports and answers by the NGOs, it should debate and discuss it.
 

	He cited Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King and BR Ambedkar, saying discussions were a must for a democratic country like India.
 

	"Those that act peacefully to seek change are not anti-government. They are for better government, and by seeking to improve the government they strengthen national security, not weaken it," Verma said, while talking on India-US strategic relationship. 
 

	Recently, the US State Department had expressed concerns over Indian Government’s restrictions on activities of the NGOs.
 

	News agency Reuters reported Greenpeace was facing shutdown as India froze its funds in charity crackdown. Officials told Reuters that the charity was misreporting funds and using unaccounted foreign aid to stall development projects.
 

	The NGO has been campaigning against coal mining, genetically modified food and nuclear power projects. In its defence, Greenpeace said the Government wanted to silence its critics.
 

	Likewise, India has also put U.S.-based Ford Foundation on a security watch list and is investigating it for funding a local group run by a prominent activist and Modi critic.

Modi Government’s crackdown on NGOs isn’t pleasing the US envoy

New Delhi, Nov 19 () Bank of Baroda on Tuesday said the RBI has imposed Rs 2.50 crore fine for non-compliance of directions issued to it with regard to Bihar-based NGO Srijan Mahila Vikas Sahyog Samiti Ltd.
"The Reserve Bank of India in exercise of powers conferred under the Banking Regulation Act, 1949, has imposed a penalty aggregating to Rs 2.50 crore on the bank for non-compliance with the directions issued by the RBI in various accounts of Srijan Mahila Vikas Sahyog Samiti Ltd at Bhagalpur Branch," Bank of Baroda said in a regulatory filing.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is probing the matter in the Rs 1,000 crore scam allegedly involving Bihar-based NGO Srijan Mahila Vikas Sahyog Samiti and government officers.
Unidentified officers of Bank of Baroda, Indian Bank and the 'Samiti' have been named as accused in the FIRs registered for alleged criminal conspiracy, cheating, forgery among others.
Besides, FIRs have also been registered in Patna and Delhi.
It is alleged that there was illegal transfer and misuse of funds from government accounts in Bhagalpur district to accounts of the Samiti through a conspiracy hatched between government officials and office bearers of the NGO.
It is alleged that the NGO, which was working towards imparting training to women, had pilfered government funds in connivance with the bank officials and state government officials between 2003 and 2014.
As per initial probe by local police, the Samiti allegedly procured cheque books from banks and forged signature of the district magistrate to transfer government funds to its account. KPM BAL

He wears many hats of author, painter, cartoonist, and a screenplay writer. The additional feather is that of an environmentalist. With the launch of “Sufi” Surti has written over 80 books till date along with seven plays. He was given President’s Award for his book named “Teesri Aankh’ in 1993. Water Warrior He is the city’s ‘Water Warrior’ and introduced a water conservation model in 2007 through his 'one-man' NGO, Drop Dead Foundation. "Whenever I see a tap dripping, my heartbeats. I just get disturbed." And this choice came after he saw his mother’s struggles during his humble beginnings. "I was brought up at the pavement, and I have seen my mother standing in the queue for long hours to get just a bucket full of water. I have seen people fighting over water," Surti says. A mission to fix leaky faucets Surti’s Drop Dead Foundation in 2007 is now funded by the government, <keyword id="6419840" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Azim-Premji">Azim Premji</keyword>, <keyword id="6357912" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="amitabh-bachchan">Amitabh Bachchan</keyword> among others. "Since I am a cartoonist, I could imagine somebody drowning 1000 bottles of Bisleri into drain,” he says. Between 2007 and 2008, he visited 1,666 houses at Mira Road to fix over 500 leaky faucets and saved 4.14 million litres of water. "We have conserved 20 million litres in ten years,” he said. His aim to target residential areas with middle-class or lower-middle-class people. A Night at The Movies" during which it will screen a Hollywood blockbusters on four Fridays starting May 8.The movies to be screened are Jennifer Lawrence-starrer "The Hunger Games", Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson's "Twilight", heist movie "Now You See Me 2" and "Wonder", starring Julia Roberts, Owen Wilson and jacob Tremblay.Lionsgate has enlisted popular film stars Anil Kapoor, Ananya Panday and Sanya Malhotra to participate in this initiative. COVID-19: Lionsgate to livestream films to raise funds for GiveIndia

New Delhi, Apr 17 () The Indian women's hockey team on Friday launched a fun fitness challenge to raise funds for the migrant labourers whose families have been affected by the nationwide lockdown to combat the COVID-19 pandemic. The 18-day challenge aims to raise money through crowdfunding to feed at least 1000 families while also encouraging people to adapt to an active lifestyle during the nationwide lockdown that has been extended till May 3. "...every day we are reading in the newspapers and social media about so many people struggling for food, we decided to do something to help these people as a team," captain Rani Rampal said in a Hockey India press release. "...we thought an online fitness challenge would be the best way to do it and this way, we can also urge people to stay active during the nation-wide lockdown. Through this initiative, our goal is to raise enough funds to feed at least 1000 families," she said. The money from the crowd-funding effort will be donated to a Delhi-based NGO Uday Foundation and the proceeds will be used to provide basic necessities for patients at various locations, migrant workers and slum dwellers. Apart from providing food/dry ration, the fund will also be used to provide sanitary kits that will include soaps and hand sanitisers. The challenge will see members of the Indian women's hockey team come up with fitness tasks that range from burpees, lunges, squats to spider-man pushups, pogo hops and more. Each day, a player will give a new challenge and tag 10 people on her social media handles to take up the challenge and donate Rs. 100 for the cause. "Everyday, we will give a fun new challenge that can be done by anybody. Those who take up the challenge can donate Rs 100 or more to the fundraiser. We really hope people support us in this cause, vice-captain Savita said. "All of us in the Indian Women's Hockey Team come from poor economic backgrounds and we have seen days when we have struggled for food and other basics. Today we are in a position to help and we want to ensure poor people get basics like food and sanitary kits," she added. Agreeing with Savita's views, Rani said, "A few days back when I was talking to my father and he said 'if you did not play hockey and lift us out of poverty then maybe we also would have been in the same condition as so many poor people today who are struggling to get food'. "When he said this to me, it broke my heart. Everyone in the team has faced so many challenges due to poverty and we know the pain of not getting food. Indian women's hockey team to raise funds for poor affected by lockdown

New Delhi, May 5 () PepsiCo India on Tuesday said the first batch of test kits for coronavirus funded by it has started reaching testing sites across India. These kits are being procured and distributed by Foundation for Innovative New Diagnostics (FIND) with funding from PepsiCo India and have been approved by Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), the company said in a statement. PepsiCo India had volunteered to support the scale up of India's COVID-19 testing capacity through support provided to FIND. Besides, it has taken other initiatives including providing over 7 million meals to families impacted by COVID-19 outbreak in partnership with non-government organisation (NGO) partners. The test kits and reagents have been procured from manufacturers approved by the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) and are run using reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) technology, which is currently the gold standard for detecting patients with COVID-19, the company said. Commenting on the initiative, PepsiCo India President Ahmed ElSheikh said, "PepsiCo India stands committed to lending its full support to the GoI (Government of India) in its fight against the pandemic. Our partnership with FIND is all about scaling up access to diagnostics and testing kits across the country." During these challenging times, he further said, "We have been working very closely with FIND to distribute testing kits to public and private healthcare laboratories in India. We believe lending assistance through such initiatives is also one of the best ways to support our real heroes – the healthcare community who are battling on the front lines against COVID-19." FIND India Head Sanjay Sarin said the sheer size of India and the density of urban populations increases the challenges and complexity of scaling up testing capacity quickly and efficiently. "Testing is our first-line of defence against this pandemic – and it is actionable today," he said, adding private sector partnerships such as the one with PepsiCo India are critical to make COVID-19 tests available to everyone who needs it.
