Unlike a lot of other people, he's still got it: O'Neill runs <a target="_blank" href="https://www.thenifty.com/">The Nifty</a>, which is partially an NFT-related content company, and partially a company that mints and trades NFTs.Up until last week, you had probably never heard of O'Neill or his company. But then he stumbled into a bit of viral fame: A <a target="_blank" href="https://twitter.com/allnick/status/1765816673649488013?s=10&amp;t=xhuXMba3HM4poWm9CQq-PA">joke post he made boasting about his crypto prowess</a> took off, fueled in part by people who didn't realize he was joking.So O'Neill made another post <a target="_blank" href="https://twitter.com/allnick/status/1765839612612874710?s=46&amp;t=xhuXMba3HM4poWm9CQq-PA">responding to the people responding to the first one</a>, and then the people who make "Community Notes" on Twitter started <a target="_blank" href="https://twitter.com/allnick/status/1767566317400228257?s=46&amp;t=xhuXMba3HM4poWm9CQq-PA">fact-checking his not-very-serious claims</a>, and he responded to those.Now the whole thing has been going for several days. "Choose rich" is O'Neill's catchphrase, which is mostly a joke, but also very similar to things people used to say on crypto Twitter, for real.My hunch is that O'Neill's window is probably closing soon. Crypto culture starts out pretty close to a caricature. There's not a lot of room to extend it.But even if that's the case, O'Neill won't complain. He says the publicity he's generated has translated into more than $100,000 in new sponsorship deals and NFT sales in the last couple days. (That claim, he says, is for real. But I haven't verified it myself.)I first met O'Neill way back in 2007, when he had founded <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nickoneill.com/allfacebookcom-launches/">AllFacebook</a>, a blog dedicated to the startup trying to dislodge MySpace as the top social network. If you're involved in crypto, you've had your money stolen at some point.I can't speak for each person, why they're so emotionally triggered by it. There's the people who think they can see through it and realize that I'm just a sham. NFTs had a breakthrough year in 2021, but weekly sales have declined by more than 80% from a January peak of nearly $1 billion, according to <a href="https://nonfungible.com/market/history">data from NonFungible.com</a>. Still, <keyword id="14252813" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="nft-nyc" source="Orion">NFT.NYC</keyword> has tripled in size over the last year, Rich said. Across seven official venues in Times Square and countless more so-called satellite venues scattered around New York City, over 1,500 speakers and 15,000 attendees will converge over four days to cover all things non-fungible tokens. Virtual artwork made by NFT artists will even be featured during the week on the massive billboards in Times Square. "NFTs are liberating because they can disrupt the chain between the artist and the buyer of art, but it also allows for such a dynamic space, intelligence, metadata — across many different platforms."<h2>Looking ahead for the blockchain</h2>Even amid the current crypto bear market, as well as the downturn in NFT sales across marketplaces such as OpenSea, Rich said he ultimately remains optimistic. The success or decline of cryptocurrencies, for starters, isn't necessary to the success of NFTs, and the blockchain technology underpinning NFTs is what shows the most promise to Rich. He explained that tradeable NFTs, like those on OpenSea, represent less than one-third of the total NFT market, and are entirely separate from the rest of the technology at hand. "There's so much other opportunity in ticketing, branding, fashion," Rich maintained. "[Tradeable NFTs] are a very, very small part of our overall event and ecosystem."As the fourth year of the event begins, Rich said he's seeing more and more brands turn to the technology of NFTs. Major corporations, he explained, are now hiring teams of people to develop blockchain technology and focus on the space as it becomes more mainstream. Rich pointed out that entertainment giant LiveNation has mentioned NFTs in two recent company earnings calls."NFTs are really going to disrupt most industries," he said. But for all the hype around the digital assets, 18-year-old Ricky da Luz discovered how to tap into the space with physical items. A passionate toy designer, he began messaging Bored Ape NFT holders on Twitter, offering to make them toy replicas of their Apes for free. Before launching <a href="https://ismtoys.ca/">IsmToys</a>, he saved about $10,000 mowing lawns and used that capital to make the initial free toys to give to people in the Bored Ape community, da Luz told Insider at the NFT.NYC conference Thursday. His first Bored Ape toy was commissioned in January for about $400. Fast forward today, and he is the founder of IsmToys, which he runs with his dad, Tony da Luz, and a team of six staff."We're tripling down on helping Web2 companies enter the Web3 space, while also converting their audience into Web3 people," the younger da Luz said. "We link the toys to actual NFTs and the digital assets act as authenticators for the toys."He said his company so far has cleared over $700,000 in toy revenue, which comes from a combination of commissioned, one-of-a-kind creations that sell for an average of $700 (though some can be as much as $2,400) and various other toys that can range from $50 to $200. Da Luz said 99% of IsmToys' transactions are done in ethereum. Transaction receipts were reviewed by Insider on Etherscan. Since January, IsmToys has received commissions for more than 300 one-of-a-kind toys, but the NFT.NYC conference has bolstered prospects. For the next month alone, they have over 200 orders on deck. IsmToys also mints NFTs that then act as an authenticator for people to receive the coinciding physical toy. But in Web3, more users are likely to take a chance on something, he said. Within the Bored Ape community in particular, da Luz added, members have an extremely strong bond with the brand, so that's why he reached out to them first. Chastain was a former product manager at OpenSea and was responsible for selecting the NFTs to be featured on the website's homepage. OpenSea's practice is to keep its NFT features confidential until they are posted on the homepage.With advanced knowledge of which NFTs would be featured on the website, Chastain allegedly purchased dozens of NFTs based on the confidential information from June 2021 through September 2021. After the NFTs were featured, Chastain sold them at profits of two to three times his initial purchase price.In an attempt to cover his tracks, Chastain purchased the NFTs using anonymous cryptocurrency wallets and anonymous accounts on OpenSea. But Twitter sleuths <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/currencies/opensea-mark-cuban-backed-nft-crypto-platform-insider-trading-2021-9">were able to identify Chastain as the rightful owner</a> of the anonymous accounts in September, and OpenSea said in a statement that it was aware of the insider trading. "We have some hypotheses as to the nature of the breach, but nothing is yet firm. We feel the community's pain, and we were not immune.
