The <keyword id="19905108" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ministry-of-defence" source="keywords">Ministry of Defence</keyword> has sanctioned over Rs 300 crore through its <keyword id="20416767" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="technology-development-fund" source="keywords">Technology Development Fund</keyword> (TDF) to create an ecosystem aimed at enhancing capabilities in cutting-edge technology and promoting '<keyword id="20460685" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="aatmanirbharta" source="keywords">Aatmanirbharta</keyword>' in defence, an official statement said on Thursday. The Technology Development Fund (TDF) scheme is a flagship programme of the Ministry of Defence, executed by <keyword id="19948662" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="drdo" source="keywords">DRDO</keyword> under the '<keyword id="20018809" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="make-in-india" source="keywords">Make in India</keyword>' initiative. Under this initiative, the government provides grants-in-aid to Indian industries, including <keyword id="19910977" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="msmes" source="keywords">MSMEs</keyword> and <keyword id="19945815" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="startups" source="keywords">startups</keyword>, as well as academic and scientific institutions, for the development of defence and dual-use technologies that are currently not available in the Indian defence industry. With these initiatives, the Ministry aims to engage private industries, especially MSMEs and startups, to foster a culture of design and development in military technology and support them with grants-in-aid. The TDF seeks to enhance the capacity and capability of Indian industries for the design and development of defence technologies in the country. It aims to create an R&amp;D ecosystem where industry and academia work together to meet the current and future requirements of the Armed Forces and the defence sector. The government aims to achieve 'Aatmanirbharta' in defence technology by building a robust defence manufacturing ecosystem in the country. The <keyword id="19910956" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="defence-ministry" source="keywords">Defence Ministry</keyword> on Wednesday highlighted several successful startups benefiting from the scheme. Pune-based startup <keyword id="22281521" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Combat-Robotics" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Combat Robotics" meta.hostid="153" meta.entityid="Combat Robotics">Combat Robotics</keyword>, with the help of the scheme, has successfully developed an innovative simulator for <keyword id="20146841" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="unmanned-vehicles" source="keywords">unmanned vehicles</keyword>. This multi-domain simulator supports unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs), unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs), unmanned surface vehicles (USVs), and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), serving as an excellent development tool for agencies working on autonomous systems. Another Pune-based defence equipment startup, ChiStats Labs Private Limited, is developing virtual sensors for aero gas turbine engine health monitoring, which helps to increase the operational reliability and longevity of the engines. The system is built on modern artificial intelligence/machine learning (AI/ML) technologies. Bengaluru-based NewSpace Research and Technologies Pvt. Ltd., under the project titled 'Autonomous Drone as First Responder for Search and Report Operations in Enclosed/Indoor Environments', has created a cutting-edge UAV capable of exploring indoor environments under various conditions, including zero light. The success of this project will open up various applications, including search and rescue operations, surveillance, industrial inspections, environmental monitoring, and hazardous environment exploration, contributing significantly to technological advancements in unmanned aerial systems, the Ministry added. The technology has been developed under the technical guidance and mentorship of CAIR, Bengaluru.

 This NSIL's second launch within less than a month. On 26 November, ISRO and NSIL launched 14 satellites — Cartosat-3 and 13 nano-satellites from the US. 
 And, Sivan gives all the credit to the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV), which just completed its 50th successful launch — making it the most experienced launch vehicle in India's arsenal. "The PSLV had five variants. It initially had the payload capability of 850 kilograms, it is now enhanced to 1.9 tonnes. The PSLV is versatile, which has various mission options," explained Sivan. PSLV has placed 52.7 tonnes of payloads — cargo carried by the rocket — into orbit over the past 26 years since its inception, and 17% of that mass was customer satellites. That's only set to grow with ISRO and NSIL's <a href="https://www.thehindu.com/news/national/isros-commercial-arm-launched-239-satellites-in-last-3-years-earned-6289-crore-govt/article28698093.ece">12 missions</a> lined up before March. "We have very many successes, and at the same time, we have a large number of missions to do," said Sivan. ISRO's newly formed commercial arm completes second successful launch in less than a month

The static test of first stage solid motor (SS1) of <keyword id="6358064" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="isro">ISRO</keyword>'s <keyword id="6117656" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Small-Satellite-Launch-Vehicle">Small Satellite Launch Vehicle</keyword> (<keyword id="6864059" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="SSLV">SSLV</keyword>) -- a new-generation compact rocket -- was not successful, according to sources in ISRO. "Oscillation was noticed after 60 seconds into the test and nozzle was blown out near the bucket flange where it's attached with the motor at around 95 seconds", sources in the Bengaluru-headquartered <keyword id="498463" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Space-Agency">space agency</keyword> said. It was supposed to be tested for a total duration of about 110 seconds, officials said. The <keyword id="116095" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Space-Research-Organisation">Indian Space Research Organisation</keyword> had targeted to launch the first development flight of SSLV (D1) in April and may now in all probability have to revise this schedule. "SSLV First stage is a new solid motor...new design. New motor has to be static tested on the ground to prove its performance. If it is successful, one more of the same configuration is tested again for acceptance. If both are successful, no more ground test is required and third motor of the same configuration will be accepted for flight", an ISRO official said. SS2 and SS3 motors, igniters and SS2 flex nozzle assembly, liquid propulsion-based VTM (Velocity Trimming Module) thrusters, propellant tanks and propulsion components had already been realised by ISRO and made ready for the maiden orbital test flight. "We have to identify the root cause of the failure and modify the design", the official said on the unsuccessful testing at Sriharikota spaceport in Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh, about 100 kms north of Chennai, last week. Asked how long it may take for ISRO to complete the two static tests, the official said: "Maybe six months". SSLV is two metres in diameter and 34 meters in length with a lift-off weight of about 120 tons. ISRO has over the years realised five generations of launch vehicles -- SLV-3, ASLV, <keyword id="6395832" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="PSLV">PSLV</keyword>, GSLV and GSLV-MkIII. The space agency had earlier said the SSLV is going to be a new member of the launch vehicle family. It is intended to cater to emerging global small satellite launch service market. "We are flying an earth observation satellite (EOS-02) on board the the first development flight of SSLV", ISRO Chairman and Secretary in the <keyword id="245720" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Department-of-Space">Department of Space</keyword>, K Sivan said last month. SSLV has been designed to meet "launch on demand" requirements in a cost-effective manner for small satellites in a dedicated and ride share mode. It is a three-stage all solid vehicle with a capability to launch up to 500 kg satellite mass into 500 km low earth orbit (LEO) and 300 kg to Sun Synchronous Orbit (SSO). By comparison, PSLV -- the workhorse of ISRO -- can take up to 1,750 kg payload into SSO of 600 km altitude. With lower per kg launch cost, the mini launcher will have multiple satellite mounting options for nano, micro and small satellites. Sivan had earlier termed the SSLV an innovative vehicle, which can be assembled in just 72 hours. "Instead of 60 days (for building a PSLV), it (SSLV) will be assembled in three days; instead of 600 people (needed to build a PSLV), it (SSLV) will be done by six people", he had said. Chairman and Managing Director of ISRO's commercial arm, NewSpace India Limited (NSIL), G Narayanan, recently said: "the world over there is a big boom for small launch vehicles and that's why we are focusing on that". The US-based satellite ride share and mission management provider, <keyword id="696288" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="spaceflight">Spaceflight</keyword> Inc., has already purchased the first commercial launch of the SSLV (SSLV-D2) from NSIL for launch from the <keyword id="6356967" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="satish-dhawan-space-centre">Satish Dhawan Space Centre</keyword> in Sriharikota. Spaceflight had said at the time that it has already sold out the entire manifest (launch) for this secured SSLV-D2 launch, with spacecraft from an undisclosed U.S.-based satellite constellation customer. This undisclosed customer is reportedly Seattle-based BlackSky Global, which will launch four earth observation satellites on board SSLV-D2 in the ride share mission arranged Spaceflight. "The SSLV is the much-needed solution to fill the gap in the portfolio of small launch vehicles," Curt Blake, CEO and President of Spaceflight, had said. The company said that it plans to launch ‘world’s highest resolution hyperspectral satellite constellation’. “We started looking at space as a sector for us to be able to work in, and we realized that what we wanted to do was to be able to enable people to take resources from space to use in space. That included asteroid mining, for example, and when we investigated that, we found hyperspectral imaging was the imaging tech that would enable us to map these asteroids as to whether they contain these metals or these minerals. So that knowledge sort of transferred to this more short-term problem that we were looking at solving,” co-founder Awais Ahmed told <a href="https://techcrunch.com/2021/03/17/pixxel-closes-7-3m-seed-round-and-unveils-commercial-hyperspectral-imaging-product/">TechCrunch</a> in an interview. Indian spacetech startup Pixxel gets $7.3 million in funding as it announces a new product even before the launch of its first satellite

Nellore: Indian Space Research Organisation (<keyword id="19915124" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="isro" source="keywords">ISRO</keyword>) chief S <keyword id="19915954" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="somanath" source="keywords">Somanath</keyword> said that the Earth Observation Satellite-8 (EOS-8) was on Friday launched successfully on Friday was a success with the satellite placed in the precise orbit. The <keyword id="19985204" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="ISRO-chief" source="keywords">ISRO chief</keyword> expressed happiness on the successful launch from the <keyword id="20021373" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Satish-Dhawan-Space-Centre" source="keywords">Satish Dhawan Space Centre</keyword> in Sriharikota and said that the next program is to manufacture and launch it for commercial purposes. Addressing a joint press conference in Sriharikota, the ISRO chief said, "It was a very successful mission. As of today, with the data available, the mission is almost a 100 per cent success with the satellite being placed in the correct orbit and all separation process happening nominally. We are very happy about completion of the development programme of SSLV with this third development flight." Recalling earlier missions, Somanath said that during the first launch which was a "near miss," the orbit was a slightly shorter one leading to the re-entry of the satellite back into earth at a later some time though it was placed in the orbit. "We made corrections and the second flight went very well and after that we have done this third development flight," he said. SSLV-D3 was the third and final developmental flight of SSLV. The first flight of the SSLV on August 7, 2022 ended in failure but its second flight on February 10, 2023 was a success. Somanath said that now the focus will be to manufacture and launch this rocket for commercial purposes and for this the two routes are realizing and launching. Explaining the process further, the ISRO chief said, "There are satellites which will be launch-weighting, which will be realized by NSIL in the interim period, where they will fund and realize the rockets. Whichever is required for commercial purpose, they will fund this route to realize and supervise from industries and launch. "After that, there is a technology transfer process which in space has started and the technology transfer process will find out which industry consortium will take it up and they will work with ISRO for next two years to understand the technology and realize two weightings as a process of technology transfer," he said. Somanath said that they will be launched commercially by NSIL and after that launch, industry will be free to produce any number of hours they desire in their own facilities. "That's the plan and whatever they cannot do, ISRO will do, otherwise everything is supposed to be done by ISRO," he added. NewSpace India Limited is a Public Sector Undertaking of the Government of India and under Department of Space. He said that it is the first time a technology transfer of a satellite roger vehicle will happen in India. "We have designed it in a simple manner which is industry friendly for production and at low cost and very short assembly time, integration time, testing time, and has an architecture which is more failure proof and they use commercial operational components," he said. The ISRO chief further highlighted that there are many features that has been built into the rocket to make it very industry friendly. "We are hoping that there is a huge amount of interest and they will come out with a good proposal finally and the whole activity of industry, technology transfer activities being initiated through in space after they finalize the industry consortium is where we work with the industry for," he added. As per ISRO, the six-and-a-half-hour countdown leading to the launch commenced at 2.47 am and was launched at 9.17 am on Friday. This was the third and final developmental flight of the SSLV-D3/EOS-08 mission. The spacecraft is designed for a mission duration of one year. The primary objectives of the EOS-08 mission include designing and developing a microsatellite, creating payload instruments compatible with the microsatellite bus, and incorporating new technologies required for future operational satellites, an ISRO release said.

Mission 100 pc success, rocket placed satellite in precise orbit: ISRO chief Somanath

In a written reply to a question, Minister of State in the PMO Jitendra Singh said the Indian <keyword id="6495330" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="space-research" source="Orion">Space Research</keyword> Organisation (ISRO) will also launch a technology demonstration <keyword id="6358065" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="satellite" source="Orion">satellite</keyword> on the third development flight of its newest launch vehicle SSLV. The space agency also has plans to undertake two unmanned missions under the Gaganyaan programme to validate the human-rated launch vehicle and the orbital module in actual flight, he said. Additionally, multiple <keyword id="19744431" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sub-orbital" source="Orion">sub-orbital</keyword> missions using a <keyword id="19216220" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="test-vehicle" source="Orion">test vehicle</keyword> are also planned to validate the Gaganyaan Crew Escape System under various abort conditions, the minister said. The space agency has also lined up two autonomous runway landing experiments of winged body Reusable Launch Vehicle and put in orbit the GSAT 20 communication satellite through a procured launch under a commercial contract by NewSpace India Limited (NSIL). The six PSLV missions will launch a space science satellite, an Earth observation satellite, two technology demonstration missions and two commercial missions by NSIL. The three GSLV missions are to launch a meteorology satellite, a Navigation satellite and a joint NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar satellite, while the LVM3 launch is a commercial mission by the NSIL.

Friday's flight acceptance test comes within days of the launch of the first set of 36 OneWeb satellites by the NSIL from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC- SHAR) in <keyword id="6355143" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="sriharikota" source="Orion">Sriharikota</keyword> on October 23. According to OneWeb, its partnership with NSIL and ISRO demonstrated its commitment to provide connectivity across the length and breadth of India by 2023. From Ladakh to Kanyakumari and Gujarat to Arunachal Pradesh, OneWeb will bring secured solutions not only to enterprises but also to towns, villages, municipalities and schools, including the hardest-to-reach areas across the country, it said. "OneWeb's commitment to enhance connectivity in India is backed by Bharti Global, its largest investor", the company said. NSIL Chairman-cum-Managing Director Radhakrishnan D had said: "We look forward to strengthening our partnership with OneWeb and utilising the potential that LEO connectivity has to deliver broadband services across India." Last Sunday's launch marked the rocket's entry into the global commercial launch service market, according to the Bengaluru-headquartered national space agency. NSIL, a central public sector enterprise under the Department of Space, had earlier signed two launch service contracts with the Network Access Associated Limited (OneWeb) for launching a total of 72 OneWeb LEO (low earth orbit) satellites on-board ISRO's LVM3. LVM3, ISRO's heaviest rocket, is capable of launching a four ton class of satellite to Geosynchronous Transfer orbit. ISRO carries out key test of its heaviest rocket's engine

NewSpace India Limited (<keyword id="7835598" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nsil" source="Orion">NSIL</keyword>) launched GSAT-24 in its first "demand-driven" communication satellite mission post space sector reforms, leasing the entire capacity on board to Direct-to-Home (DTH) service provider <keyword id="13033014" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tata-play" source="Orion">Tata Play</keyword>. Built by Indian Space Research Organisation for NSIL, the satellite was successfully placed into geostationary orbit by the Ariane 5 rocket, operated by French company Arianespace, from Kourou in French Guiana (South America) on Thursday. GSAT-24 is a 24-Ku band communication satellite weighing 4180 kg with pan-India coverage for meeting DTH application needs. NSIL, incorporated in March 2019, is a Central Public Sector Enterprise (CPSE), under Department of Space (DOS) and is the commercial arm of ISRO. As part of "space reforms" announced by the Government in June 2020, NSIL was mandated to undertake operational satellite missions on a "demand driven" model, wherein it has the responsibility to build, launch, own &amp; operate satellites and provide services to its committed customer. The entire satellite capacity on-board GSAT-24 will be leased to its committed customer Tata Play, the DTH business of Tata Group, for meeting their DTH application needs. The Ariane 5 has successfully placed two satellites into geostationary orbit: MEASAT-3d for the Malaysian operator MEASAT, and GSAT-24, Arianespace said after launching them on-board Ariane-V VA257 flight from the Guiana Space Centre, Europe's spaceport in Kourou. GSAT-24 is configured on ISRO's proven I-3k Bus with a mission life of 15 years. "'Demand-driven' mode basically means when a satellite is launched, one will know who the end customers are going to be and what's the kind of utilisation and commitment so that you have very effective utilisation of this satellite capacity once it goes into orbit", an NSIL official explained. "Earlier, the mode was more supply driven, with capacity being leased after the launch with largely no firm commitment by customers before hand", the official noted. "The entire mission is fully funded by NSIL -- satellite, launch, launch campaign, insurance, transportation, in-orbit maintenance and support. Once the satellite is up in orbit, this will be fully owned and operated by NSIL," NSIL Chairman and Managing Director Radhakrishnan Durairaj told PTI. "So, we will be the satellite operator for this particular satellite," he said. Tata Play rents the entire capacity of the newly launched GSAT-24 satellite

(Eds: With more details) New Delhi, Feb 1 () After a steep cut last year, the Department of Space has been allocated Rs 13,949 crore in this Budget, of which Rs 8,228 crore have been earmarked for capital expenditure. Rs 700 crore has been allocated for the New Space India Limited (NSIL), a newly formed public sector undertaking under the Department of Space. "The New Space India Limited, a PSU under the Department of Space, will execute the PSLV-CS51 launch, carrying the Amazonia Satellite from Brazil, along with a few smaller Indian satellites," Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said in her budget speech. NewSpace India Limited has been established to tap the benefits of the Research and Development carried out by the Department of Space and the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). The company will spearhead the commercialisation of various space products including productionisation of launch vehicles, technology transfer and marketing of space products. In Budget 2021-22, the Department of Space has been allocated Rs 13,949.09 crore, of which Rs 8,228.63 crore has been earmarked for capital expenditure. This is nearly Rs 900 crore more than what was allocated in 2019-20 and Rs 4,449 crore more than fiscal 2020-21. In the last budget, Rs 13,479.47 crore was earmarked for the DoS, but it was later revised to Rs 9,500 crore. In 2019-20, the DoS was allocated Rs 13,017.61 crore. Sitharaman said as part of Gaganyaan, India's manned space mission, four Indian astronauts are being trained on Generic Space Flight aspects, in Russia. Dept of Space allocated Rs 13,949 cr in budget, Rs 4,449 cr more than fiscal 2020-21

India has four fully built satellites ready for launch and shipment to the rocket port out of the 12 that were built during 2019-2020, said a senior official of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). India realised 12 satellites during 2019-2020 out of which eight have been launched and four are ready for launch and transfer to the rocket port at Sriharikota, said P. Kunhikrishnan, Director, U.R. Rao Satellite Centre (URSC) part of ISRO. He was speaking at a space sector conference 'Ushering the new era in Indian Space Sector' organised by Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in association with Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Antrix Corporation Limited and supported by NewSpace India Limited (NSIL). Kunhikrihnan said out of the four satellites, GISAT-1 is ready for launch at the rocket port in Sriharikota. The other three satellites - Microsat-2A, GSAT-12R and, RISAT-2BR2- are ready for shipment to the rocket port. The launch of GISAT-1 satellite slated for March 5, 2020 was postponed due to technical reasons a day before the launch. According to him, the challenge in making satellites is that all are different and not uniform. Further unlike a rocket which has to perform its task of putting a satellite into orbit in about 20 minutes, a satellite has to work in a harsh environment for about 20 years. Kunhikrishnan said the future plan for satellite manufacturing from 'build to print' to 'build to specs'. He said India has 52 satellites up in the sky. ISRO's GISAT-1, Microsat-2A, GSAT-12R and RISAT-2BR2 satellites are ready for launch

The Luxembourg-based <keyword id="9920040" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="kleos-space">Kleos Space</keyword>, a space-powered Radio Frequency Reconnaissance data-as-a-service (DaaS) company on Friday said its Kleos Scouting Mission satellites are expected to be launched during the first half of November 2020 by Indian rocket PSLV. "The Company has been informed (by NSIL via Spaceflight Inc.) that the launch of the four Kleos satellites planned on-board PSLV-C49 mission is being targeted during the 1st half of November 2020, based on the current status of planning of activities. This schedule is subject to change due to operational circumstances beyond NSIL control," Kleos Space said. "The rocket launch is done by ISRO (<keyword id="116095" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Space-Research-Organisation">Indian Space Research Organisation</keyword>). Kleos said it is launching the scouting satellites under a rideshare contract with Spaceflight Inc, with the launch managed by NSIL. The Kleos Scouting Mission's four satellites have been mission-ready since the middle of 2019, and were shipped to the launch site (Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh) during February, anticipating the launch during March. Delay to the launch from March has been due to the prevailing Covid-19 pandemic situation, Kleos said. "In due course, NSIL via Spaceflight Inc. will confirm the exact launch date once the activities at the launch base progress successfully," Kleos said.
