Facebook announces new corporate human rights policy covering all social network

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Today, Reddit CEO Steve Huffman announced a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/reddit-new-content-policy-2015-7">proposed change to its content policy</a> that would lock away the worst of the worst (porn, hate speech, anything that "violates common decency") behind a&#xa0;wall, making it only visible to those who log in to the site and actively seek it out.&#xa0;<p>Judging from the immediate reaction, there are three&#xa0;major camps. The first, and probably the majority, are curious but wary whether this will actually change anything on the site.</p><p>The second camp are&#xa0;people who think Huffman's promises about keeping free speech contradicts&#xa0;his desire to impose rules on the community, as exemplified&#xa0;by this popular comment:</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>And then the third those who think that Reddit's new policies are just taking the same old toxic behavior and sweeping it under the rug without actually kicking people out:&#xa0;</p><p><div></div></p><p><div></div></p><p>But only one group seems to be actively celebrating: /r/coontown (we won't link it), the racist "subreddit" community that seems to have expected to be deleted from the site - only to have Huffman single it out as a community that will be placed behind the content filter, but otherwise left untouched.</p><p>Under this new policy, so long as /r/coontown follows the rules around making sure that any bad behavior stays behind the opt-in wall, Reddit will leave them be.</p><p>This is currently the banner image on /r/coontown:&#xa0;</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>&#xa0;And then there's this comment thread on the announcement:</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p class="embed-spacer">The "false flag attack" referred to in the second comment is a term for someone else masquerading as a member of the community and purposely breaking the rules to incite a crackdown. Racists celebrate Reddit's proposed new policy

New Delhi, Aug 24 (IANS) The users of Facebook Oculus have expressed outrage over the new policy where they need a Facebook account to log into their VR headsets.<br /><br />Facebook said that starting from October, everyone using an Oculus device for the first time will need to log in with a Facebook account.<br /><br />"If you're an existing user and already have an Oculus account, you'll have the option to log in with Facebook and merge your Oculus and Facebook accounts," the company said.<br /><br />If you're an existing user and choose not to merge your accounts, you can continue using your Oculus account for two years.<br /><br />"After January 1, 2023, we will end support for Oculus accounts. If you choose not to merge your accounts at that time, you can continue using your device, but full functionality will require a Facebook account," the social network announced last week.<br /><br />The move did not go well with the users and privacy advocacy groups who took to Reddit and Twitter to express their anger.<br /><br />"Facebook requires Oculus Rift users to log into Facebook, breaking yet another privacy promise," the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) tweeted. <br /><br />An Oculus user posted on Reddit: "I'm mostly surprised that they haven't done this with Whatsapp or Instagram thus far, but they are doing it for Oculus accounts".<br /><br />Oculus Founder Palmer Luckey replied: "I am already getting heat from users and media outlets who say this policy change proves I was lying when I consistently said this wouldn't happen, or at least that it was a guarantee I wasn't in a position to make". <br /><br />"I want to make clear that those promises were approved by Facebook in that moment and on an ongoing basis, and I really believed it would continue to be the case for a variety of reasons," he added.<br /><br />Facebook bought Oculus for $2 billion in 2014.<br /><br />Luckey said that "I guarantee that you won't need to log into your Facebook account every time you wanna use the Oculus Rift".<br /><br />"You will not need a Facebook account to use or develop for the Rift. Oculus users slam Facebook for new account login policy

Google-owned YouTube has announced that it will update its approach to eating disorder-related content to create space for community, recovery and resources while protecting viewers in the coming weeks.<br /><br />"We've long had policies to remove content that glorifies or promotes eating disorders. YouTube announces new policies on eating disorder content

But that evaluation, by necessity, given the circumstances, is taking place at this time," Kerry told reporters during a visit to Beijing.</p>

India approves a new education policy after more than two decades

New Delhi, Dec 17 () The textiles ministry has sought suggestions for formulating the much-awaited new National Textile Policy for the next 10 years, which will envisage positioning India as a fully integrated, globally-competitive manufacturing and exporting hub.
<p> The policy will entail the strategy and action plan for the country's textile and apparel sector.
</p><p> Last month, Textiles Minister Smriti Irani said in the Rajya Sabha that the Centre is considering formulation of the National Textiles Policy after consultations with states.
</p><p> The formulation of the new policy has been under consideration for some time now. In 2016, then textiles minister Santosh Gangwar had said the new policy will envisage creation of additional 35 million jobs.
</p><p> The existing National Textile Policy 2000 was framed about 13 years ago. Since then, the industry has undergone various changes on the domestic and international front. The domestic textile industry has seen large-scale modernisation and technological up-gradation in the last decade and faces new challenges.
</p> "The Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, is in the process of formulating a New Textile Policy for the next decade. This will include vision to position India as a fully integrated, globally competitive manufacturing and exporting hub, strategy and action plan for Indian textile and apparel sector," according to the ministry's website. Centre seeks suggestions for new National Textile Policy

India has always held competition with China to be the world's top consumer of bullion. <p>There's the fact that in many service jobs, tips make up <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/what-you-should-tip-in-every-situation-2014-4" target="_blank">a large part of the worker's pay</a> but aren't mandatory; that every country seems to have <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/hate-tipping-here-are-12-countries-where-you-dont-have-to-2014-4" target="_blank">different accepted rules</a>; that the tip you earn as a server might come down to something as simple as <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/tricks-for-higher-tips-when-waiting-tables-2014-4" target="_blank">scrawling a happy face on the check</a>.</p>
<p>The confusion around tipping, and its effect on servers, is why some restaurants are <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/a-growing-number-of-us-restaurants-are-forgoing-tips-and-paying-servers-more-2014-5" target="_blank">abolishing tips altogether</a>. </p>
<p>The latest to adopt an alternative policy is Packhouse Meats in Newport, Kentucky. According to <a href="http://www.cincinnati.com/story/news/2014/06/08/newport-restaurant-tipping-policy/10192539/" target="_blank">Cincinnati.com</a>, the establishment's management has forbidden tips in favor of standardizing its servers' take-home pay: At the end of the shift, they get either $10 an hour or 20% of their food sales, whichever is more. </p>
<p>The new process was established to protect the restaurant's servers, owner Bob Conway told Cincinnati. "How much a server makes has nothing to do with how hard they work," he said. "Servers had quit because they couldn't make ends meet … We wanted our servers to participate in our productivity by giving them reasonable compensation based on sales. It takes the whim of the customers out of it."</p>
<p>While Packhouse has to inflate his menu prices a little to cover the staff's tips, impact on the diner isn't all that severe - she only pays what she would were she to leave a 20% tip.</p>
<p>Conway says that, in contrast to the federal base rate of $2.13 for servers, his serving staff is earning an average of $15 an hour.</p>

Another Restaurant Abolishes Tipping In Favor Of New Policy

Under the new policy, Spotify is seeking permission to access your sensors, photos, contacts, and GPS, among other things. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Users have taken to&#xa0;social media platforms like&#xa0;Twitter to threaten to cancel their subscriptions if the new policy is not pared back, with some declaring that they've already pulled the trigger. People are quitting Spotify over its new privacy policy

Bernie Sanders. He's calling on the <keyword id="6354851" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="retail">retail</keyword> giant to revamp its minimum wage, in addition to its rules around leave.</p><p>"Walmart, which is owned by the wealthiest family in America, is not a poor company," Sanders said in a <a href="https://www.sanders.senate.gov/newsroom/press-releases/sanders-statement-on-walmart-paid-leave" target="_blank" rel="noopener">statement</a>. "If Walmart can afford $20 billion for stock buybacks to enrich wealthy shareholders, it can afford to raise the pay of all its workers to a living wage. Walmart can and must pay all of its workers at least $15 an hour with good benefits."</p><p>Walmart did not immediately respond to Business Insider's request for comment.</p><p>"We're excited to introduce a new hourly attendance policy that rewards our people when they're here and provides support when they can't be," a Walmart spokesperson said in a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bernie-sanders-walmart-minimum-wage-2018-11" target="_blank" rel="noopener">previous</a> statement to Business Insider. "These changes are based directly on feedback from our associates who wanted more flexibility to miss work when life happens, while also increasing rewards for consistently coming to work and serving our customers. In 2018, the senator teamed up with California Rep. Ro Khanna on a bill called the Stop WALMART Act. Using stock <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/stock-market-buybacks-keep-bull-market-afloat-8-companies-2018-9-1027561698" target="_blank" rel="noopener">buybacks</a> as leverage, the bill would force corporations to raise hourly wages to a minimum of $15, provide seven days of sick leave, and limit CEO compensation.</p><p>Sanders previously clashed with Amazon over its minimum wage. In October, the online retailer boosted its <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-raises-minimum-wage-to-15-dollars-2018-10" target="_blank" rel="noopener">minimum wage</a> to $15 an hour.</p><p>And Sanders isn't the only one criticizing Walmart in the wake of its time-off policy announcement.</p><p>"We've been calling on Walmart to publicly commit to a healthy sick time policy that allows us to take care of ourselves and our families," North Carolina-based Walmart employee and OUR Walmart leader Shashauna Phillips said in a statement. "Walmart is responding to our call for change with a new policy. But what they are giving with one hand, they are taking with the other - the corporation still doesn't accept doctor's notes and is even encouraging associates to come to work when they're sick with a new bonus plan."</p><p><span>Under the new system, Walmart employees will get six days of "protected PTO" for emergencies and illnesses every year. Every six months, employees will also accrue a pool of five days to use for unexpected absences. The company's vacation policy will remain unchanged.</span></p><p><span>The revamped system will give employees with good attendance the opportunity to earn some extra cash. </span>Taking the six days of "protected PTO" won't cut employees out of the running for the quarterly bonus. Bernie Sanders blasts Walmart's new employee leave policy

Coimbatore, Feb 13 (): The Central government wouldaddress all issues in its new National Textile Policy which islikely to be announced in a couple of months, Union TextileSecretary Ravi Capoor has said.<p>This was announced on Wednesday during an interactivesession with captains of the textile industry in theregion.</p><p>Capoor said the policy would ensure basic rawmaterials availability at international price and encouragescale-up of operation by developing 10 mega textile parks withover 1,000 acres of land closer to the ports, amongothers.</p><p> The new policy would address power cost, credit costand its availability and expedite conclusion of the free tradeagreements with EU, the UK and other countries to boostexports, a press release from the Confederation of IndianTextile Industry (CITI), which organised the session, quotedCapoor as saying.</p><p> He exhorted the textile industry, especially in TamilNadu, to diversify into polyester segment to boost exports.</p><p>The global textiles market of cotton and man-madefibre is in the ratio of 30:70 while it was the reverse inIndia.</p><p>Of the total textile exports, cotton textilesaccounted 80 per cent due to the price advantage of the home-grown cotton, while it is only 20 per cent in the man-madefibre segments due to the expensive raw material.</p><p>Capoor asked Tirupur Knitwear Cluster to brand itsgarments and products under sustainable programme that mightfetch a larger margin globally and the government would extendnecessary support to promote the brand.</p> CITI chairman T Rajkumar said the government hasidentified the textile industry as the thrust area and in realterms Make in India facilities without any imports rightfrom fibre to finished goods, ensures inclusive growth byproviding jobs. New textile policy will address all issues: Govt official

NEW DELHI: The government on Sunday left it to RBI to decide on <keyword id="6371181" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="interest-rates">interest rates</keyword> even as the two have begun discussions on putting in place a new monetary policy framework, which is a fresh mechanism to fix rates.<br />

While the government wants Parliament to set the inflation target under the proposed plan, RBI has already gone ahead and begun work towards a glide path, which targets 8% retail inflation by next January and 6% by January 2016.<br />
<br /> On Sunday, <keyword id="6355261" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Finance-minister">finance minister</keyword> <keyword id="42575" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Arun-Jaitley">Arun Jaitley</keyword>, who spoke at the RBI board meeting, did not comment directly on RBI's plan but made it clear that it was the central bank, which will decide on rates. "On last two occasions RBI has announced its policy on interest rates, I had, on the same evening, issued clear statement. I think that is very clear. This is the issue which the Reserve Bank decides and I am sure they will factor in various circumstances," he told reporters after meeting.<br />

Although some viewed it as a "prod" from the government to cut rates, since taking charge Jaitley has maintained that RBI is the final authority on deciding when the time is ripe to tweak rates.<br />
<br /> "<keyword id="130" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Governor">Governor</keyword>, RBI has already stated that RBI will not hold interest rates high any longer than is necessary and if disinflation proceeds as warranted, there will eventually be room to cut rates. Going forward, the RBI should examine the liquidity situation, inflation and growth in setting policy rates," the <keyword id="25455" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="finance">finance</keyword> minister had said on Tuesday, when RBI had left policy rates unchanged, while signaling more liquidity infusion into the system.<br />

<br /> After the board meeting, RBI governor <keyword id="6358908" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Raghuram-Rajan">Raghuram Rajan</keyword> was more emphatic in saying that time was not ripe. "At this point, uncertainty is two way... Then, of course, if news come on either side we can change what the policy is. But, as of now we think the policy is on target. This is contingent on data coming in," he said.<br />
<br /> In recent weeks, inflation, industrial production and trade data have been positive but RBI's main worry stems from <keyword id="67286" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Food-inflation">food inflation</keyword> due to weak monsoon rains in several parts of the country.<br />

On the monetary policy framework, Rajan said that so far preliminary discussions have been held and indicated that a final outcome will take time.
