In 2017, Google launched Android Go — a trimmed down version of Google’s near-stock offering Android One, targeted at low-end ultra-budget phones — accompanied by lighter apps in the Play Store. The Android Go operating system is optimised to run with just 512 MB or 1GB RAM. The company claims that Android Go can open apps 15% faster than regular Android and comes with a data saver feature to help users consume less mobile data. Just as with Android Go, a partnership with Jio will allow Google to increase the number of users of its apps and services. KaiOS, the operating system on the Jio Phone, had beat Apple’s operating system to come in second when it was launched in 2018 — mostly due to the popularity of the Jio Phone and its budget pricing. The <keyword id="4792220" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="JioPhone">JioPhone</keyword>, Ambani's no-frills device for first-time smartphone users now has more than 100 million users. It will be a 4G phone to start with “The new version of Jio Phone, if and when it happens, we are anticipating it's unlikely to be 5G — it will likely it will be a 4G segment,” senior analyst Tarun Pathak told Business Insider. The bigger issue, however, is if these two partnerships are enough. The collaboration with Google could also put in mobile future partnerships aimed as making phone specially for the Jio network akin to the network-linked smartphones in the US. What Qualcomm may bring to the Jio smartphone The company’s JioPhone came with a Qualcomm chipset and that is likely to continue with this renewed partnership. “It remains to be seen how Jio will take on this segment, whether they’re going all out with a 4G smartphone or with Make-in-India,” senior analyst at Counterpoint Tarun Pathak told Business Insider India. How cheap will it be? To call it a “made in India” phone, Ambani has to ensure that the new Jio smartphone is not just assembled in India like in the case of Xiaomi, Apple, Samsung or OnePlus. Pathak estimates that 88% of the components needed to build a smartphone come from outside India, mostly from China. “Value-addition in India is just 12%,” said Pathak. “If you are not dependent on the Chinese you won’t be able to hit the price point which JioPhone has hit in its first iteration — like $20 or so,” said Pathak. JioPhone is Google and Ambani's second go at launching a smartphone — this time with help from Qualcomm

Much like the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Reliance-Jio-vs-Telecom-Industry-Jios-Battle-of-Supremacy-so-Far/articleshow/53875879.cms">launch of Reliance Jio’s</a> telecom and internet services, <keyword id="2003276" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jio">Jio</keyword>’s newly announced ‘smartish’ feature phone too is finding its way to the middle of a controversy. This time around the debate is whether the <keyword id="4289270" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="jio-phone">Jio phone</keyword> violates the principles of Net Neutrality. At this point it’s important to mention that not all details of the new Jio Phone are out yet. However, sources in the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (<keyword id="6356988" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="TRAI">TRAI</keyword>) say that, looking at the available details so far, the Jio phone does not violate the principles of Net Neutrality. The Net Neutrality debate saw its peek in India with Facebook's Free Basics and <keyword id="15491" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Airtel">Airtel</keyword>'s Zero rating offerings both were shut down by TRAI stating they went against the principles of Net neutrality but Jio phone, as of now, seems to be in the clear. 
 The issue got triggered when India’s third largest telecom operator, Idea, recently commented on how the new Jio phone raise concerns about net neutrality, “It will not allow most of the apps which a customer prefers and the choice of apps may not work because it is forcing consumers to use an individual operator’s apps,” <keyword id="510299" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Himanshu-Kapania">Himanshu Kapania</keyword>, the managing director of Idea Cellular had said. Kapania also talked about working with handset makers to launch a new phone to counter Jio, targeting the 2G consumers in India. The company says even if the phone cannot compete with Jio’s pricing it will offer customers the freedom of choice. 
 
Telecom Analyst (doesn’t wish to be named) believes that the consumer has a choice and that nothing can be fully neutral. Consumer has other means/devices for accessing the internet. There are plenty of alternative devices available in the market which he can fall back to (India being predominantly an open market for devices, alternatives will be many). If an operator steers the consumer to its own content by offering a device, it does not seem to violate the principles of "Net Neutrality" as laid out by the TRAI.” 
 TRAI seems to agree with this. Jio has talked about how the Jio phone will come packed with entire set of Jio apps but it’s still unclear if non-Jio apps will find a place in the Jio phone. TRAI believes that if <keyword id="10926" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Reliance">Reliance</keyword> is providing its services in its intranet then by providing their apps to the consumers, Jio is not doing anything wrong. Source also indicates that consumers will be aware about the product and they can choose not to buy it. TRAI says if Jio is not blocking any particular site then merely providing additional apps with its product do not violate the principles of Net Neutrality. TRAI will be looking into Jio Phone in detail once the company submits its tariff for the new plan/phone to TRAI. 
 
Well with the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Jio-phone-to-be-a-single-sim-feature-phone-and-existing-customers-can-shift-to-it/articleshow/59776367.cms">launch of the Jio Phone</a>, the company has managed to pique our interest but not without setting off yet another controversy. However, TRAI's Feb 8th order of 2016 prevents an operator to offer differentiated rates for accessing different content (by the operator tying up with a content player), but it has not prevented an operator from offering its own content in its intranet at a differentiated rate or even free. While we are still waiting for details that could either douse the ‘controversy’ fire or add fuel to it, it would be fair to say that the proposed phone by Jio will appeal to the predominantly voice usage customers BUT it will be extremely important to see how exactly Jio is planning to cater to consumers wanting to browse the Internet.

The new feature phone from Reliance Jio is expected to once again shake the industry to its core but this time around the massive disruption will be felt not just by the telecom sector but other industries too. Here’s a look at Jio Phone’s impact on some key industries. 
 
Telecom Industry Reliance Jio has just about started to test its new feature phone; incumbent operators in the telecom industry are still adjusting to the major ripples created by Jio services, and it should get ready for yet another storm. With the Jio phone, the telecom industry can expect another set of major tariff cuts considering Jio phone will come bundled with Jio sim. Customers will have to recharge with a <keyword id="4405573" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="jio-dhan-dhana-dhan">Jio Dhan Dhana Dhan</keyword> monthly pack of Rs. 153, which will give them free voice, texts, unlimited data (high-speed data capped at 500MB per day), free access to Jio apps for 28 days along with a device that’s “effectively free”. Jio has already made operators rethink their strategies by launching the new device, we are likely to see more operators bring out feature phones, Idea has already talked about launching their own device to compete with Jio phone. And lastly with the new “smartish” feature phone that works only on 4G VoLTE network, Jio could finally bring an end to the ‘2G/3G’ era. 
 
Smartphone Industry 
We all saw what happened to the telecom sector after Jio’s entry and we can certainly expect a similar kind of disruption in the low-end smartphone market as well. While India is the fastest growing smartphone market in the world, almost 50% of the mobile phone users in India still use feature phones. That’s a huge number and a market to ignore. Mukesh Ambani made it clear in his AGM speech that he is looking to capture the feature phone market of India with his new phone, reason why the new phone is specifically designed for the ‘feature phone’ market of India. The device comes with 2.4-inch display with QVGA display, microSD card slot, torchlight, FM radio, supports voice commands in 22 Indian languages, has a panic button and comes with advanced NFC support for digital payments. With Jio aiming to deliver 5 million units every week to consumers across the country, low-end smartphone companies like Intex, Micromax, Lava will have to match up to the new Jio phone that will be sold for Rs. 1500 which will be refunded at the end of three years. The Low-end manufacturers are certain to feel the Jio heat and it may not be limited to the low end device manufacturers but also companies selling smartphones under Rs. 5000. Jio’s new phone is packaged in a way that makes it the perfect device to introduce both smartphone and 4G network to the feature phone market of the country. 
 
DTH Market The DTH industry in India is already trying to keep up with internet video services like <keyword id="128682" type="TOPIC" weightage="20" keywordseo="Netflix">Netflix</keyword>, Hotstar, Voot and many others, now the sector needs to watch out for the disruption from Jio Phone. Jio phone will come pre-loaded with all Jio apps including Jio TV, Jio Cinema, Jio Music etc making the phone an all in one entertainment device, meaning Jio Phone can very easily turn into a DTH device in itself by simply topping up for Rs. 309 per month. It’s also important to note that Mukesh Ambani specially talked about one key accessory with the phone during the Jio Phone announcement, he said that Jio phone will come with "<keyword id="4964079" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="jio-phone-tv-cable">Jio Phone TV-Cable</keyword>" that will allow users to connect their phones to TV, even the ‘non-smart’ TVs. This attachment with the phone is a clear hint that Jio wants the new phone to be an overall entertainment device and not just a phone. And streaming entertainment from phone and blasting it on to TV could potentially be a better deal as it will free the users from setting up expensive hardware and paying costly monthly charges. 
 
As we get closer to the launch date, all these industries will have to get back to their drawing boards and create products that can give a tough fight to the latest from Reliance Jio, the Jio phone. Within a year, Jio has managed to add 125 million subscribers to its network and according to analysts, Reliance Jio with get its next 100 million users from its new feature phone.
