<ul><li>A CARE Ratings report says that <keyword id="1415541" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="new-investments">new investments</keyword> in India fell to a 15-year low in the first half of FY20. </li><li>The total new investment in H1 FY20 stood at ₹1.9 lakh crore.</li><li><keyword id="6362476" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="investments">Investments</keyword> in manufacturing, construction, real estate and irrigation have increased but those in mining, electricity have taken a hit.</li></ul>The Indian <keyword id="34412" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="economy">economy</keyword> is in a dismal state and now a CARE ratings report shows that new investments in India fell to a 15-year low in the first half of FY20. <br /><br />The total new investment in H1 FY20 stood at ₹1.9 lakh crore. During the same period in the previous year, as much as ₹6.1 lakh crore were pumped into the economy. <br /><br />According to the report, investments in manufacturing, construction, real estate and irrigation have increased but those into mining and electricity have taken a hit.<br /><br />“The investment rate has declined consistently over the years and remained range bound between 28%-29% of GDP in the past 4 years. This has been a detrimental factor for the overall economic growth of the country,” said the report.<br /><br />Odisha had the highest share of new investments, and has overtaken Maharashtra.<br /><br />Investments are also slowing down because of the rising number of stalled projects. In FY19, 53% of government owned projects were stalled. However, in FY20, half of the stalled projects are privately owned. Most of the stalled projects were seen in the services sector, followed by electricity and manufacturing.<br /><br />The report stated that the reason for stalled projects has been lack of non- environmental clearances and lack of funds.<br />

Gold is selling at prices that are all time high. Hence it is advisable that both these investments are not linked to each other. To make a prudent decision, it is good to consider which is cheaper and which is expensive before investing. New Delhi, Jan 27 () Invest19.com on Monday said it plans to invest Rs 200 crore in a new stock investment platform which will target untapped market of country's small towns.
<p> The company said it is in discussion with top brokers, including Choice broking for the new stock investment platform which will be launched soon in the country, Invest19.com said in a statement.
</p><p> "We are trying to build up the platform to target the untapped market of Tier 3 and 4 cities in India, so that a layman can invest confidently in the stock market. We are redefining the way people think about stock Investment; we are making it easy as online shopping and safe as online banking, "Invest19.com Founder and CEO Kaushlendra Singh Sengar said.

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>It looks like we now know what the smaller of Bill Ackman's two new investments is.</p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><a href="http://www.forbes.com/sites/antoinegara/2015/06/02/bill-ackmans-next-ma-bet-pershing-square-invests-350-million-in-nomad-holdings/">Forbes reports</a> that Ackman's $20 billion fund Pershing Square Capital disclosed a stake in Nomad Holdings, a special-purpose acquisition company (SPAC) that trades on the London Stock Exchange (ticker: <span>NOMHF)</span>.</span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Ackman snapped up a <a href="http://www.londonstockexchange.com/exchange/news/market-news/market-news-detail/12373518.html">21.7% stake</a> in Nomad that's worth about <span>$350 million, the report said.</span></span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Nomad was cofounded <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/ackman-sohn-presentation-2015-5#-7">in early 2014</a> by billionaire fund manager Noam Gottesman and Ackman's friend Martin Franklin, the chairman of Jarden. It now trades as Restaurant Brands International. </span></span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Last month, during a conference call with Pershing Square Holdings investors, </span><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/ackman-has-two-new-positions-2015-5">Ackman said</a><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> that his fund had two new investments, one small and one large.</span></p><p>It appears Nomad is definitely the smaller of the two investments. </p><p>Ackman said the large one was "approaching 15% of capital." (That would be about $3 billion, according to our calculations.) He also said during that call that it could be<span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> "a couple of months before we are required to make a disclosure." <p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Courtesy Venrock</span></p></div><p></p></div></div><a href="http://www.venrock.com/teammember/bryan-roberts/">Bryan Roberts</a>, partner at venture-capital firm Venrock, has been behind some of the biotech industry's biggest successes.<br /><br />Like Illumina, the maker of gene-sequencing technology that's now worth $25 billion, and Receptos which went public in 2013 only to be sold to Celgene for $7.2 billion two years later. <br /><br />Roberts, who has a PhD in chemistry and chemical biology, is chairman of three public companies, and on the board of a handful of others. </p><p>Some of his current investments include <a href="http://www.venrock.com/investment/zeltiq/">Zeltiq</a>, a medical device company that uses cool sculpting to remove fat cells from the body, and <a href="http://www.venrock.com/investment/10x-genomics/">10X Genomics</a>, which wants to learn even more about the human genome. </p><p>At the JPMorgan Healthcare conference in San Francisco, Business Insider spoke with Roberts about how he identifies new investments. He has three criteria:</p><h3 style="padding-left: 30px;">1. A Big problem that aren't being addressed</h3><p style="padding-left: 30px;">"It's actually pretty simple," he said. "I feel like lots of investors define themselves by stage or specific area, like we only do orphan disease drugs, or we only do medical devices, or we only do companies with more than $5 million in revenue or we only do early-stage companies. We don't do any of that from a definition perspective."</p><h3 style="padding-left: 30px;">2. An "Orthogonal," or non-consensus approach </h3><p style="padding-left: 30px;">"If everybody in the world is working on something, it's less interesting to us." Because it takes years to take a treatment all the way from a concept to a marketed drug, it's harder to know early on if your drug is going to be the one to beat. "We like to know that stuff early," he said. </p><h3 style="padding-left: 30px;">3. Good people</h3><p style="padding-left: 30px;"> "It's that triumvirate of things that interests us and that can exist in really any segment." This is due to better earnings clarity overseas, which improves the environment for stock pickers. <p>But what's somewhat surprising was his tirade against the sport.</p>
<p>This is interesting because we know that PIMCO CEO Mohamed El-Erian is a big Mets fan.</p>
<p>From Gross's note:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">Having mentioned Jack and the game of baseball, let me give you some opinions that come close to being hard cold <span style="text-decoration: underline;">facts</span>, not wishes. First of all, baseball is the most boring game in the world next to cricket. I don't know how to play cricket, which is the only reason I rank it second. CNN Sports did an actual survey of how much time during an average two hour and 39 minute game that baseball players are actually <span style="text-decoration: underline;">moving</span> - you know, swinging a bat or running to first base. Five minutes and 13 seconds! The rest of the time the boys of summer are actually just standing around, scratching you know where, and spitting tobacco juice onto the nice green grass. Most disgusting, I'd say. And why, I wonder, does a baseball "season" consist of 162 individually boring games? In football you only need 16 or so to declare a champion, in boxing sometimes three minutes or less.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">Now for some controversy: steroids, HGH and juicin'? I say, why not. They can't be cheating if they're all cheating together. And as a matter of fact, management and owners "cheat" all the time. If they have a lineup heavy with left-handed hitters, they will shorten the right field fence. The Yankees and now the Dodgers just "buy" championships with money from the game's most gargantuan TV rights (who's watching?). That's playing by the rules? If your counterpoint on drugs is that it's unnatural and harmful to the body, I wonder what's so healthy about the way they conduct spring training or do their pregame warm-ups. Two or three half-hearted sprints in the outfield and they're done. If baseball was concerned about health or addiction, they'd be testing for lip cancer or diabetes. Modern day relief pitchers, who now "exercise" for two innings or less on the mound, have pot bellies that would make a sumo wrestler proud. Why, the Babe was so fat he could hardly waddle back around to home plate 60 times in one season.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">Last point, because I know you're dying to hear my opinion on Pete Rose and the Hall of Fame. I say anyone as ugly as Pete deserves a free pass to <a href="http://baseballhall.org/museum/experience/museum" class="confirmleave">Cooperstown</a> or any town for that matter, maybe the same free pass that you'd have to give <span style="text-decoration: underline;">me</span> to go to a baseball game again. Take me anywhere, but don't take me out to the ball game and make me stretch during the seventh inning while I'm eating my Cracker Jack<span style="text-decoration: underline;">s</span>. Reality can smack you in the face sometimes, like it did Pete Rose, but if I'm gonna be smacked it'll have to be on the gridiron or the hardwood, not Yankee Stadium.</p>
<p>Of course, no one could accuse El-Erian's Mets of "buying" championships.</p>
<p>Anyways, it's not too hard to imagine what kind of parallels Gross draws to the economy and financial system.</p>
<p>Fast-forward to his recommendations (emphasis added):</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">So what to do here, folks? For those of you who are still fans of the old American pastime - in this case capitalism and the making of money as opposed to baseball - how do you play on this rather unstable field of our own making? Which pitch do you swing at? <strong>Well, commonsensically, in an unstable global economy that is increasingly difficult to stabilize, an investor should seek out the most stable of assets. At the extreme, that would be cash in the world's most stable currency.</strong> But whether dollars, euros, or pounds be your first choice (ours being dollars), cash or overnight deposits in any of them yield next to nothing. So say you want something but don't want to lose your money either; a modern day Will Rogers. More concerned about the return <span style="text-decoration: underline;">of</span> your money than <span style="text-decoration: underline;">on</span> your money but still a little greedy (or perhaps just needy) too. Well, some say stocks - the only game in town. But I don't know. When the Fed stops the QE game, it seems that stocks might be at risk. After all, haven't they more than doubled in price since 2009 in part because of it? Without Big Government deficits and Big Bank check writing and with the advancing risks posed by Big Regulation and the technical whimsy of Big Investor, the safest pitch to swing at may not be stocks but the asset that will soon be the nearly sole focus of central banks. Instead of QE, central bankers are shifting to "<a href="http://www.federalreserve.gov/faqs/money_19277.htm" class="confirmleave">forward guidance</a>" which, if reliable, allows financial markets and real economies to plan several years forward in terms of financing rates and investment returns. <strong>If unemployment and inflation rates can be at least closely guesstimated, then front-end yields become the most reliable bet in the ballpark, Pete Rose notwithstanding</strong>. While low, they can at least form the basis for curve rolldown and volatility strategies that have higher return/risk ratios than alternative carry options such as duration, credit or currency. With Big Investor unsure or perhaps unable to catch stock, long bond or currency fly balls in today's afternoon sun, it's perhaps best to field boring slow-rolling grounders based on policy rate stability for "an extended period of time." <strong>Recall as well that the result of Minsky's "Big Government" and "Big Bank" policies has always been accelerating inflation at some future time. We recommend longer-dated TIPS as insurance against just such an outcome</strong>.</p>

Bill Gross BLASTS Baseball In His New Investment Outlook

<ul><li>Indian hotel aggregator <keyword id="2870818" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="FabHotels">FabHotels</keyword> is raising ₹540 million from <keyword id="6361649" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Goldman-Sachs">Goldman Sachs</keyword>, according to the filings sourced by paper.vc. </li><li>FabHotels was launched by Adarsh Manpuria in 2014, just a year after OYO. </li><li>The hotel chain falls in budget hotel range.</li></ul>FabHotels, the Indian hospitality chain, is reportedly raising funds worth ₹540 million in a round led by Goldman Sachs, according to the filings sourced by paper.vc. <br /><br />The hospitality chain which mainly works on a franchisee model, has its presence in over 40 Indian cities with more than 500 <keyword id="6368036" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="hotels">hotels</keyword>. The service which falls under budget hotels, competes with the likes of Indian hospitality unicorn <keyword id="2550719" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="OYO-Rooms">OYO Rooms</keyword>, and Treebo Hotels. <br /><br />"There appears to be a renewed interest in this sector and we believe that's a good thing. Oyo is over-capitalized for India and appears to be, for all practical purposes, focussed on China,” said paper.vc founder Vivek Durai.<br /><br />FabHotels was launched by Adarsh Manpuria in 2014, just a year after OYO had come into being. <br /><br />The funding comes at the right time as according to <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/services/hotels-/-restaurants/fabhotels-plans-to-double-inventory-by-2019/articleshow/67063277.cms">reports</a>, FabHotels was looking to expand its reach and double its inventory to 20,000 rooms, by 2019. <br /><br />The hotel chain last raised a funding of $25 million in Series B round led by Goldman Sachs, and also saw participation from its existing investors Accel Partners. FabHotels could take on OYO with a new investment

<ul class="summary-list"><li>UBS in its "Future of New York" report published Wednesday outlined ideas for <keyword id="11896289" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="investing" source="Orion">investing</keyword> in the Big Apple. </li><li>The Swiss investment bank focused on <keyword id="11921345" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="new-york-city" source="Orion">New York City</keyword> as it recovers as the epicenter of the COVID outbreak. </li></ul><p>The COVID-19 pandemic cast doubt about New York City's standing as the center of finance, culture and the arts in the US, when it became the epicenter of the outbreak in 2020, said UBS in a report published Wednesday. But the Swiss investment bank offered some ideas for how to invest in the Big Apple as it climbs back from the health crisis.</p><p>Cases and hospitalizations in the city stemming from the Omicron variant of the coronavirus have been moving downward, according to local health officials. UBS in its <a href="https://www.ubs.com/us/en/wealth-management/insights/investment-research/2022/future-of-new-york.html">"Future of New York"</a> report said while Omicron hurt the city's nascent recovery, as the pandemic subsides it sees a resumption of capital investments in physical infrastructure, among other types of investments. </p><p>Federal stimulus helped ease the strain on the city's budget, and credit spreads on the city's municipal bonds have compressed in the past year.</p><p>"However, investors can still find reasonable values in the city's taxable and tax-exempt bonds, many of which are focused on sustainable investments." </p><p>"We reject the idea that New York's best days are behind it and instead make a concerted argument that its unique attributes still offer investors an opportunity to benefit from its recovery," wrote Tom McLoughlin, head of fixed income Americas, and Solita Marcelli, chief investment officer Americas, at UBS Global Wealth Management. </p><p>Here are some investment sectors to consider, according to UBS: </p><p><strong>Commercial Real Estate </strong></p><p>Recovery in what's been one of the most active CRE investment <keyword id="11893875" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="markets" source="Orion">markets</keyword> in the US has been sluggish compared with the "remarkable" rebound for residential housing. Many corporate employees are still working full-time or part-time from home to cut the risk of COVID exposure. UBS said the New York office market will be somewhat bifurcated for the foreseeable future, with newer projects and renovated buildings that offer improved ventilation, flexible workspaces, and touchless controls holding an advantage over older buildings without such features. </p><p>But the increasing number of vaccinations and willingness of federal and local governments to stave off mass shutdowns should help improve conditions in the CRE market. UBS said these factors are beginning to show up in office transaction volumes, particularly in the last three quarters of 2021. </p><p>It said in equities, real estate investment trusts, or REITs, with a degree of concentration in the New York metropolitan area are a way for investors to focus on a revival in the commercial real estate market. </p><p>"The international buyer has been noticeably absent during the pandemic, but we expect to see a broadening of the investment landscape in CRE as New York remains one of the most important business, investor, and tourist destinations in the world."</p><p><strong>Higher Education </strong></p><p>More than 500,000 people attend colleges and universities in the city, with Columbia University and City University of New York among larger institutions. The sector is slowly recovering from the pandemic that forced the suspension of in-person classes. High vaccination rates and declining hospitalizations will aid the recovery but sluggish trends in enrollment and cost pressures will persist in the short term. </p><p>"The near-term credit outlook for higher education is somewhat mixed given still-weak enrollment trends, although we expect their recovery to pick up by the fall of 2022," said UBS. "That said, after a solid rally in the municipal market since March 2020, bond yields in the higher education sector are now tighter than pre-pandemic levels, so careful credit selection is essential especially given the widening credit quality gap between financially strong colleges and those facing substantial fiscal and market challenges." </p><p>It said it prefers higher education institutions that have a "substantial" student body and endowments or solid financial support from state and local governments and hold solid academic reputations. </p><p><strong>Transportation</strong></p><p>Among the effects of the pandemic, the spread of the virus forced the Metropolitan Transportation Authority to suspend subway services for the first time in 115 years and activity slowed to a near standstill at major airports in the area. </p><p>The "services provided by New York's transportation agencies are critical components to the urban landscape, and their resilience is often underestimated. Exogenous shocks, such as COVID-19, tend to widen credit spreads and provide buying opportunities. Assuming customer usage continues to recover from pandemic lows, recent volatility aside, CIO believes some issuer spreads have room to compress further."</p>

Here's how investors can position themselves as New York City retakes the crown as the world's financial hub, UBS says

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Two <keyword id="11892836" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="new-york" source="Orion">New York</keyword> residents were arrested in connection to an investment scam defrauding more than 150 investors.</li><li>Sherry Xue Li and Lianbo Wang were charged with wire fraud conspiracy and money laundering conspiracy.</li></ul><p>Two New York residents were arrested in connection to a $27 million investment scam, which included charging 12 investors $93,000 each to attend a Trump fundraiser in 2017, according to a <a href="https://www.justice.gov/usao-edny/press-release/file/1520166/download">federal criminal complaint</a>.</p><p>Sherry Xue Li, 50, and Lianbo Wang, 45, both of Oyster Bay, New York, were charged with wire fraud conspiracy, money laundering conspiracy, and conspiracy to defraud the United States by obstructing the Federal Election Commission's (FEC) administration of campaign finance laws, according to a <a href="https://www.justice.gov/usao-edny/pr/oyster-bay-residents-charged-27-million-investment-fraud-scheme-and-selling-foreign">press release from the Justice Department</a>.</p><p>Federal investigators said Li and Wang's nearly decade-long "massive, multi-layered fraud scheme" duped investors, many of whom were foreign nationals living outside the US, into investing in a fictitious project to build a private educational institution in Sullivan County, New York, called the "Thompson Education Center."</p><p>Michael Driscoll, FBI assistant director-in-charge, accused Li and Wang of also promising investors "green cards, access to political figures, and dividends on their money" from the education center, producing "tens of millions of dollars" coming from investors and straw donors.</p><p>But out of all their promises, Driscoll said "only one promise came to fruition, the access to political power."</p><p>The scam drew more than 150 investors as of July 2022, feds say.</p><p>Investigators said Li and Wang took the money from investors and unlawfully donated it to US politicians and political committees under their names, including charging 12 investors $93,000 each to attend a Trump fundraiser on June 28, 2017, and take pictures with then-President Donald Trump.</p><p>"Li and Wang used the funds that they collected from the foreign nationals <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2017/07/18/mysterious-developer-china-disneyland-rural-new-york-emerges-major-trump-donor/487551001/">to unlawfully make $600,000 in political contributions in their own names</a> — $270,500 from Li and $329,500 from Wang — to the joint fundraising committee hosting the June 28, 2017 Fundraiser," according to the DOJ release.</p><p>Li, Wang, and their investor guests then took photos with Trump, using the photographs to solicit more investments in their fictitious Thompson Education Center project.</p><p>Representatives for Trump and Wang's attorney James Roth did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment. Li's attorney Nora Hirozawa declined to comment.</p><p>On top of the $600,000 donation to the <keyword id="14490560" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="trump-fundraising" source="Orion">Trump fundraising</keyword> committee, Li also donated more than $32,000 to the Republican National Committee in October 2016, as well as a $55,000 donation to then-New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo when he sought re-election in 2014, according to a 2017 profile of Li published by USA Today. It was not immediately clear if these donations were a part of the investment scam.</p><p>"It's alleged that Li and Wang defrauded their victim-investors out of millions, then used their ill-gotten gains to live luxuriously and 'rub elbows' with prominent politicians," Thomas Fattorusso, Special Agent in Charge of IRS:CI New York, said in a statement.</p><p>Fattorusso added: "It is through law enforcement partnerships and collaboration that we were able to break-down this multi-layered fraud scheme and ensure that the alleged culprits now face justice for their criminal behavior."</p>

The Bank of New York was the first stock listed on the NYSE.</p><p>In 1971, the NYSE officially became a not-for-profit corporation, and officially transitioned to a publicly traded company in 2006, which is what it remains today. It's taken a series of mergers for the NYSE to garner the size and global traction it claims today. Among the most notable was its 2013 purchase by the Intercontinental Exchange Inc. These clients can include banks, broker-dealers, hedge funds, mutual funds, day traders, and some high net-worth individuals.</p><p>On the other side of that relationship lies sellers, who submit an "ask" price that typically exceeds the bid price. Sellers are individuals or organizations that offer securities for purchase, like stocks, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-is-a-bond" target="_blank" rel="noopener">bonds</a>, or commodities. </p><p>Then there are dealers, who serve as an intermediary between brokers and sellers, pocketing the difference between the bid and ask price as compensation for their work.</p><p>When a broker executes a selling order, it isn't complete until a dealer finds another broker to purchase the order. Because of the complexity of the arrangement, not just anyone can trade on the floor of the stock market. Up until about the 1980s, the NYSE relied on the boisterous open outcry system to communicate trade orders through verbal and physical signals such as hand signals and shouts.</p><p>Today, electronic trading is the norm on the floor of the NYSE. The "dealer" is a computer that automatically connects buyers with interested sellers, who each get updated information electronically. However, floor traders are still around to facilitate high-volume trades and set pricing live when necessary.</p><h2>NYSE listing requirements</h2><p>Before a public company can be listed on the exchange, it must meet a few stringent requirements. In terms of structural standards, all listed companies are required to have a minimum of 400 shareholders and 1.1 million outstanding shares. </p><p>Financially, listed companies must have a share price of at least $4, with the market value of its publicly held shares reaching at least $40 million. On top of that, there are also profitability standards that must be met. </p><p>Listed companies are required to earn at least $10 million over the past three years and maintain a global market capitalization that meets or exceeds $200 million.</p><h2>NYSE hours</h2><p>The NYSE <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/stock-market-hours#:~:text=Regular%20market%20hours%3A%20Spans%20from%209%3A30%20a.m.%20to%204%20p.m." target="_blank" rel="noopener">operates daily</a> from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_American_Eastern_Time_Zone" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ET</a>, excluding weekends and public holidays, with extended trading hours trading available, too.</p><p>The NYSE is well-known for its <a href="https://www.nyse.com/bell/history" target="_blank" rel="noopener">opening and closing bells</a>, rung at 9:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. respectively, to mark the start and end of the trading day. </p><p>These used to be rung by floor managers, but the tradition has evolved into executives from companies listed on the exchange coming to ring the bells daily, often in accordance with relevant marketing events or new mergers or acquisitions.</p><h2>The financial takeaway</h2><p>The New York Stock Exchange is the world's largest and most well-known exchange, facilitating between two and six billion trades per day.
