A classic rags-to-riches tale, Ma's life story resonates well with the masses.Ma, whose birth name was <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/alibaba-jack-ma-packaged-food-ready-meals-china-tech-crackdown-2023-11">Ma Yun</a>, was born to a poor family in Hangzhou, China.He didn't excel in school. He failed his college entrance exams twice before passing on his third try and entering Hangzhou Teachers Institute.After graduating from college in 1988, he famously applied to dozens of jobs — with an equal number of rejections, including from KFC — before he was finally hired as an English teacher.Ma has said he <a target="_blank" href="https://www.scmp.com/tech/leaders-founders/article/1819573/alibabas-jack-ma-happier-making-us12-month-living-billionaire">loved his job</a> — but it paid only $12 a month. "When I look back, every problem I met when I was a kid benefited me."He started his own business in translation services in 1994, and after a business trip to the US in 1995, he launched a digital business in the early days of the internet.His first business — China Pages — failed, but he gathered a band of 17 friends in 1999 to set up Alibaba. The site they launched allowed exporters to list their products directly on the platform, ushering China into the e-commerce era.Even though Ma is arguably the most successful internet entrepreneur of this generation, he started Alibaba with no knowledge of marketing or computers.But his start as a teacher taught him how to rally the troops, identify and cultivate talent, delegate work, and chart the direction for Alibaba, he said at <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cnbc.com/2018/09/20/working-as-a-teacher-taught-alibabas-jack-ma-this-business-skill.html">Davos in 2018</a>."He was more of a teacher than a manager," Brian Wong, the 52nd employee of Alibaba, told Business Insider of Ma's management style. Wong spent nearly two decades at Alibaba over the course of three separate employment stints — from 1999 to 2020. Most recently, he was the company's group vice president and remains an advisor to an Alibaba unit focused on education and training."Jack does have an aspect of him that speaks his mind," Wong said. "For the most part, it's a positive asset in terms of how he has built the business."<h2>Jack Ma 2.0: An outgoing Big Tech exec — until he wasn't</h2>As an internet entrepreneur, Ma was pivotal in steering the company, and his charisma corralled the support he needed."He's a master at communicating a shared aspiration that so many people can relate to," said Wong.Ma cofounded Alibaba.com in June 1999. In October, the company managed to raise $5 million from the Wall Street behemoth Goldman Sachs and another $20 million from the Japanese tech investor SoftBank.The work culture at Alibaba was intense, but Ma was known for maintaining a sense of fun. In the early 2000s, when setting up the Taobao shopping platform, he made his team do headstands during breaks to boost their energy.Alibaba boomed through the 2000s in China. By the mid-2010s, Ma started dreaming beyond China.In 2014, Alibaba started trading on the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/alibaba-ipo-september-19-2014-9">New York Stock Exchange</a>, making Ma the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2014-12-11/jack-ma-becomes-asia-s-richest-person-on-alibaba-surge">richest person in Asia</a> by the end of that year with an estimated $25 billion fortune. "What I'm thinking about is how we can make Alibaba a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/why-alibabas-jack-ma-isnt-scared-of-chinas-slowdown/">platform for global small business</a>," Ma told the journalist Charlie Rose at the World Economic Forum in Davos in 2015.Ma himself cavorted with the biggest names in business, tech, and government globally — including <a target="_blank" href="https://twitter.com/BillGates/status/956346059839627264">Bill Gates</a>, SoftBank CEO <a target="_blank" href="https://edition.cnn.com/2021/02/08/tech/softbank-masayoshi-son-jack-ma-intl-hnk/index.html">Masayoshi Son</a>, and then-president-elect <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/alibaba-ceo-jack-ma-meets-with-trump-pledges-1-million-us-jobs-2017-1">Donald Trump</a>.But there was a problem: Outspoken Ma was starting to outshine his political masters in Beijing, as the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.ft.com/content/1fe0559f-de6d-490e-b312-abba0181da1f">Financial Times</a> reported in April 2021.Some of what he was saying could also be potentially embarrassing for Beijing, a person close to the Hangzhou government told the media outlet.After Ma openly <a target="_blank" href="https://www.reuters.com/article/idUSKBN27L2GW/">hit out at Chinese regulators</a> in October 2020 for stifling innovation, Beijing ran out of patience. What came next was an extended period in which he was, to the public eye, invisible.<h2>Jack Ma 3.0: a high-tech farming titan</h2>Ma had already been retired from Alibaba for about a year by the time he vanished.Even though he was lying low, Ma kept busy. Over the past two years, he has been spotted at various institutes around the world that specialize in high-tech farming.In October 2021, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.scmp.com/business/companies/article/3152901/jack-ma-study-tour-agriculture-europe-alibabas-founder-travels">Ma was in Spain</a> learning about agriculture and technology related to environmental issues. He has also traveled to the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener nofollow" href="https://www.wur.nl/en/newsarticle/jack-ma-visits-wur-to-learn-more-about-sustainable-food-production.htm">Netherlands</a>, <a target="_blank" rel="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/alibaba-jack-ma-tokyo-japan-china-beijing-tech-crackdown-2022-11">Japan</a>, and <a target="_blank" rel="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jack-ma-appears-resurface-thailand-gives-up-control-ant-group-2023-1">Thailand</a> to study agrotech.In May, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.tc.u-tokyo.ac.jp/en/9351/">Tokyo College</a> announced that Ma would be taking up a teaching position while researching sustainable agriculture and food production.In January, he was in <a target="_blank" rel="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jack-ma-appears-resurface-thailand-gives-up-control-ant-group-2023-1">Thailand</a>, where he dined with Supakit Chearavanont, the chairman of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.feedstrategy.com/business-markets/feed-production-by-region/article/15443042/top-feed-companies-144-global-producers-rank-in-2022">Charoen Pokphand Group</a>, a major animal-feed producer.His entrepreneurial streak also appears to be back — or perhaps it never disappeared.In November, Ma incorporated a company named "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.yicaiglobal.com/news/alibaba-founder-jack-ma-enters-ready-meals-sector">Hangzhou Ma's Kitchen Food</a>," reports said. South China Morning Post reported that the company was involved in the sales of pre-packaged food and the processing and retail of agricultural products.Ma hasn't publicly talked about why he's moving into farming. He didn't respond to a request for comment from BI sent via his personal foundation.Wong told BI Ma had always been moved by how the digital economy helped connect rural communities to growth opportunities. His <a target="_blank" href="https://www.alizila.com/jack-ma-foundation-awards-2-85m-to-chinas-rural-educators/">foundation</a> supports educators in such communities as well.Agriculture, Wong said, was thus an extension of Ma's recognition that there are issues such as the climate crisis, scarcity, and inequality that need to be addressed, with technology as a driver.Ma seems to have articulated the same thoughts in a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.scmp.com/tech/big-tech/article/3231711/jack-ma-continues-focus-agriculture-education-alibaba-undergoes-sweeping-changes">video speech</a> he delivered to rural teachers in August, as SCMP reported. His words show that while he may be pivoting his attention to a new sector, the same entrepreneurial bent he's displayed all along is still there."I found that a place that does well in agriculture is not necessarily a place with good resources, but a place with unique thinking and people with imagination," he said."The rural areas do need technology, while I think unique thinking and creativity are important as well," he added.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>An effort to legalize marijuana in Mexico has stalled after several years of debate by lawmakers.</li><li>But Mexican cartels and independent growers are still preparing to cater to a new domestic market.</li></ul>Badiraguato, Sinaloa — Every day at 5 a.m. Margarita, a 51-year-old farmer, jumps out of bed and lights a candle to St. Judas, a saint believed to listen to lost or almost impossible causes.Only after that, Margarita steps out to her front yard and looks over her marijuana plants, which are covered with a camouflage-shaded cloth."Every morning I pray to San Judas that the government don't destroy my plantation. It's been such an effort to put it back up after it got destroyed the last time," she told Insider. Mexican military personnel destroyed Margarita's weed crops during an operation in 2019.Margarita doesn't work for any of Mexico's cartels or criminal organizations. She is doing what she has learned from generations of ancestors: Marijuana harvesting has been her family's legacy for more than 100 years."I really don't involve myself too much in the rest of the process from the plant. I harvest, pick and trim my plants, and then if someone wants it, fine. If not," she says, "I store it until it sells."<div type="image" title="El Chapo Guzman home town" height="3168" width="4903" msid="98164647" hostid="261" sizebytes="423240"></div>Margarita's product caters to the Mexican market, reaching buyers through independent distributors but also through criminal organizations like the Sinaloa Cartel — the cartel's jailed kingpin, Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzmán, was <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/r-mexican-president-visits-el-chapos-home-turf-after-guilty-verdict-2019-2" target="_blank" rel="noopener">born in Badiraguato</a> and the region is still the group's home turf.But all Margarita cares about is that her product is not selling as much as it did five years ago. "The full sacks of weed sometimes stay there in the warehouse for a month or two, and what do I do? How do I sustain myself if I'm not selling?" she said in an interview.Margarita helps herself with a government assistance program called "<a href="https://lopezobrador.org.mx/temas/sembrando-vida/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Sembrando Vida</a>," which hands out roughly $220 a month to small farmers in states like Sinaloa and neighboring Chihuahua and Durango — a region known as <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rising-violence-in-ciudad-juarez-reminder-of-cartel-fighting-2016-10" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the golden triangle</a> for the intensive cultivation of marijuana and opium poppy there — to encourage local development and discourage drug production."I tried to harvest tomato, but it sells even worse than marijuana. The big companies take all the sales, and there is very little what I can offer" in quantity, she said.At the current price for weed, Margarita gets roughly $25 a kilo. She was expecting to get at least $500 this season for her harvest, but more than half of it hasn't sold."It's not a good time for weed. People are asking for a different weed, the one that comes from the gabacho, but we don't have those seeds," Margarita said, using a term referring to the US.<div type="image" title="Mexico Chamber of Deputies lawmakers marijuana" height="1333" width="2000" msid="98164648" hostid="261" sizebytes="142362"></div>Like other independent growers, Margarita remains barred from formal sales in Mexico, where efforts to legalize marijuana have stalled. <a href="https://comisiones.senado.gob.mx/ambiente/reu/docs/presentacion1_e131120.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Negotiations</a> over such a measure began in 2019, when the Congress approved a law to legalize the use, possession, and planting of marijuana. Four years later, it is still stuck in Mexico's Senate.In 2021, the Senate <a href="http://comunicacion.senado.gob.mx/index.php/informacion/boletines/49730-aprueba-el-senado-en-lo-general-dictamen-para-la-regulacion-del-cannabis.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">passed a bill legalizing recreational use of marijuana</a>, but lawmakers in the lower house held up the measure while they tried to raise the amount that consumers could carry in public higher than the proposed limit of 28 grams.While weed remains generally illegal in Mexico, farmers and criminal groups are not waiting to position themselves in what could soon be a legal market."We are not waiting for a law. The Mexican government took too long already and meanwhile other countries keep making profits and our sowers keep struggling," said Andrés Saavedra, a lawyer and the founder of an NGO called Plan de Tetecala, which supports independent weed growers and the decriminalization of cannabis."We are now focused on becoming independent and keep growing marihuana for a Mexican market that wants to use the plant in different ways," he said.<h2>Old product, new market</h2><div type="image" title="Sinaloa marijuana joint assembly" height="1500" width="2000" msid="98164650" hostid="261" sizebytes="263846"></div>Mexico's move toward marijuana legalization comes after several US states legalized the drug, which appears to have put a dent in cartels' profits.Prior to the <a href="https://money.cnn.com/2012/11/07/news/economy/marijuana-legalization-washington-colorado/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">legalization</a> of marijuana for recreational use in Colorado and Washington state in 2012, the Mexican Institute of Competitiveness <a href="https://insightcrime.org/news/analysis/study-legalization-cut-cartel-profits-by-30/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">calculated</a> that such measures could cost Mexican cartels nearly $2.8 billion.More states legalized the drug in the years that followed, and the amount of weed smuggled into the US from Mexico appears to have declined over that period. In 2013, US authorities seized roughly 1.3 million kilograms of weed at the border, according to the DEA. By 2019, that had fallen to nearly 249,000 kilograms.Over the past five years, marijuana prices in Mexico have decreased by more than half, prompting criminal groups to produce more dangerous drugs, like fentanyl, to maintain profits and pushing independent farmers to harvest plants like opium to sustain themselves.The prospect of a legal domestic market has drawn the interest of criminal groups that used to focus on smuggling marijuana north, especially the Sinaloa Cartel, members of which are <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sinaloa-cartel-weed-business-taking-ideas-from-california-dispensaries-2022-12">studying the success of dispensaries in the US</a>."What we did was to change the seed. "We lost a share of the business, but in no time we will take it back by producing the best weed in the world."After the arrest of "El Chapo" Guzmán's youngest son, <a href="https://www.vice.com/en/article/dy7qbv/mexico-el-chapo-ovidio-sinaloa-cartel" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Ovidio Guzmán</a>, in January, the Sinaloa Cartel's weed operations are overseen by two of his brothers: Iván Archivaldo and Jesús Alfredo Guzmán, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/el-chapo-sons-other-mexican-narcojuniors-rising-in-sinaloa-cartel-2021-12">members of a group known as "Los Chapitos."</a>The operative and others in the business say the cartel is "very interested" in marijuana legalization. Some believe it is because of Los Chapitos' love for the plant and its supposed benefits. Others think it is purely a business decision.Margarita, on the other hand, can't afford to grow "premium quality weed," since the seeds are at least 10 times more expensive and equipment like that used in cartel-run grow houses to maintain the plants is also a steep investment."I know that if I had that other weed from los gringos, I could be selling twice my price, but it is also very expensive. And I don't know how the señores are going to take it if I go into that business," Margarita said, referring to Americans and to Mexican drug lords, respectively. "I might get in trouble, don't you think?"

"Jeffrey Epstein is one of the worst people who's ever roamed the earth — but that was just never the case."<h2>More documents are coming</h2>The email from Giuffre was included in a set of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jeffrey-epstein-list-names-unsealed-doe-court-documents-2024-1">documents unsealed</a> Thursday evening from a 2015 lawsuit she filed against Epstein's associate Ghislaine Maxwell.The lawsuit was settled in 2017, but in the years since, a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/epstein-giuffre-v-maxwell-unsealed-thousands-documents-defamation-2019-8">judge has unsealed numerous documents</a>, ranging from depositions to routine legal arguments. In the latest round of unsealing, US District Judge Loretta Preska ruled that documents naming around 170 previously anonymous "Does" should be released. Some of the Does are Epstein's powerful friends, while others are his victims, household employees, and other individuals who were merely incidentally mentioned in court filings.The first batch of documents from Preska's most recent order — about 950 pages — were unsealed on Wednesday.Additional documents will be made public on Friday and Monday, a source familiar with the rollout told Business Insider.Epstein killed himself in a Manhattan jail cell in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex-trafficking charges. A person close to the former president told Business Insider that Carter should be blamed for not publishing the allegations against Epstein."It would have been great for Graydon Carter to have exhibited this level of sympathy for the victims back in 2003 when he had the opportunity to expose Epstein's heinous crimes," the person close to Clinton said. "Instead, as Vicky Ward has stated numerous times, he gutted her reporting."In <a target="_blank" href="https://vickyward.substack.com/p/the-latest-epstein-files">her Substack newsletter Thursday night</a>, Ward wrote that if Clinton ever came to Vanity Fair's office, she "did not know about it." Epstein himself, however, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.newyorker.com/news/annals-of-communications/why-didnt-vanity-fair-break-the-jeffrey-epstein-story">did reportedly meet with Carter at the office about the story</a>.Many emails unsealed Thursday show Giuffre communicating with Sharon Churcher, the journalist who first published her allegations about Epstein in The Daily Mail in 2011.In the emails, Giuffre explored opportunities for a book deal and other media projects about her experience.When Ed Klein, a journalist for Vanity Fair, wanted to interview Giuffre for a story about Prince Andrew, Churcher advised Giuffre not to talk with the magazine, saying she ought to save details for her book, which was never ultimately completed or published."My strong instinct is not to help him — not even to take his calls — as there is no upside in giving away one of THE selling points in the book," Churcher wrote to Giuffre.<a target="_blank" href="https://archive.vanityfair.com/article/share/ac60f552-4163-4d39-a36b-d2014fe20062">Vanity Fair published the story about Prince Andrew</a> a few months later.While it recounted what Giuffre told The Daily Mail, it ultimately didn't have a new interview with her.This story has been updated with a comment from a person close to former President Bill Clinton.
