As per a PTI report, the total malaria cases last year were 426. Most malaria cases are reported from the West Delhi zone. As for Chikungunya, 43 cases have been reported so far. This is nearly double than last year when the figure stood at 23. A total of 65 cases of the virus were reported last year. The most number of chikungunya cases have been reported from the South Delhi zone this year. Last week, the city witnessed a spike of nearly 250 cases of dengue in seven days. As per Municipal Corporation of Delhi's (MCD) data from January till September 21, a total of 1,229 dengue cases have been reported in the city with the death of a 54-year old registered in Lok Nayak Hospital, a senior official at the hospital had confirmed. Delhi reported 651 cases of dengue this month. Last month, a total of 256 dengue cases were reported in the city. The number of cases has become three-digit since August, it said. Last year, Delhi reported 3,013 dengue cases till the corresponding month, a manifold increase from 525 in 2022. A total of 9,266 cases were reported in the entire year while 19 dengue deaths were registered in the city last year. In September alone, the figure stood at 2,141 cases in 2023. The most number of cases this year are reported from the Najafgarg zone at 180. In a week, 45 cases have been reported in the area, the highest of all the zones besides the south zone where an equal number of cases were reported this week. The non-MCD areas governed by other agencies like NDMC, Delhi Cantt, and Railways, reported 312 dengue cases to the total tally, as per the data. To enforce mosquito control laws, the MCD has issued over 1.14 lakh legal notices and 39,338 challans to those who allowed mosquito breeding on their properties. Repeat offenders have been fined Rs 24.82 lakh, and police complaints have been filed against 9,241 people who didn't follow the rules, as per the data. The civic body also plans to increase fogging operations at major upcoming public events like Dussehra and Durga Puja and step up inspections and anti-larval measures in areas with high mosquito populations to curb the infectivity of the virus. Delhi reports over 300 dengue cases in a week; malaria and chikungunya cases on the rise

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has attributed the significant <keyword id="20029550" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rise" source="keywords">rise</keyword> in <keyword id="20233512" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="dengue-cases" source="keywords">dengue cases</keyword> in the city this year to an increase in the number of <keyword id="22375552" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="testing-centres" source="keywords">testing centres</keyword>, which has grown from 36 to 900 compared to last year, according to an official report. As of July 6, Delhi recorded over 256 dengue cases, which is nearly double of the 136 cases recorded in the corresponding period in 2023 and the highest since 2020, according to the report's data. In previous years, the number of dengue cases stood at 153 in 2022, 38 in 2021, and 22 in 2020. The highest number of dengue cases were recorded in the Najafgarh Zone, the report said. No deaths due to the vector-borne disease have been reported so far this year. Last year, 19 deaths occurred due to dengue, the second-highest since 2020. "The rise in the number of cases this year is because more testing centres have started collecting samples and reporting the dengue cases to the civic body. Until last year, there were about 36 testing centres. Now, this number has increased to 900 because of which the numbers appear to be inflated," a senior civic body official said. The peak season for dengue is yet to arrive in Delhi and the situation will call for urgent attention when the monsoon advances, providing a suitable atmosphere for <keyword id="21283114" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mosquito-breeding" source="keywords">mosquito breeding</keyword> to increase significantly, the official said. More than 12,000 people in <keyword id="6357713" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Uttar-Pradesh" source="Orion">Uttar Pradesh</keyword>'s <keyword id="576481" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Firozabad-district" source="Orion">Firozabad district</keyword> are suffering from <keyword id="6398743" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="viral-fever" source="Orion">viral fever</keyword>, according to the state health department officials. Four more deaths have been reported from the district in the past 24 hours, taking the toll to 114 that includes 88 children. The deaths have continued despite widespread fogging and door-to-door surveys to drain out stagnant water and to check the spread of vector-borne diseases. <keyword id="12080003" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="veer-pal" source="Orion">Veer Pal</keyword>, a daily wager, who lost his five-year-old son due to lack of treatment on Sunday, told reporters, that a private hospital in the city had demanded Rs 30,000 in advance to start treatment. "I requested them to start treatment and give me time to arrange money, but they refused. Later, I took my child to the <keyword id="3849448" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="firozabad-medical-college" source="Orion">Firozabad Medical College</keyword>, where staff refused to admit my child as beds were not available. I arranged for a private taxi to take him to Agra, but my son died on the way," he said. Chief Medical Superintendent (CMS) of Firozabad Medical College, Hansraj Singh, said that no official complaint was made in the matter. Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Dinesh Kumar Premi said there are 64 active camps in the district and 4,800 people, including those with fever, are undergoing treatment there. According to the health department officials, 578 cases of dengue have been confirmed in Firozabad so far. A few cases of malaria, scrub typhus - a bacterial illness spread by larval mites, leptospirosis, another bacterial disease spread through the urine of infected animals, have also been reported. Diarrhoea has also emerged as a threat for children. Additional Director of the health department, A.K. Singh, said that over 100 teams of health staff are conducting door-to-door surveys to identify patients and provide them with medicines and required assistance. "There is no shortage of platelets or required medicines at the government centres. Additional ambulances have been arranged to take patients to hospital," he asserted. "Civic body teams are carrying out special cleanliness drives in the affected areas and all the recent deaths are being investigated," Singh added. <ul><li>According to a recent study posted by PLOS, <keyword id="3658" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword> ranks number one globally for the most cases of these 11 <keyword id="916291" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="neglected-tropical-diseases">neglected tropical diseases</keyword>. </li><li>In spite of that, India has made a significant progress in the recent years towards NTD control and elimination. </li><li>Today, as the International Tropic’s Day is being celebrated globally, India has the chance to bring global focus on the solutions of the issue. </li></ul>According to a recent <a href="http://journals.plos.org/plosntds/article?id=10.1371/journal.pntd.0006038">study</a> posted by the Public Library of Science (<a href="http://journals.plos.org/plosntds/article?id=10.1371/journal.pntd.0005424">PLOS</a>), India ranks number one globally for the most number of cases when it comes to 11 neglected <keyword id="918542" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="tropical-diseases">tropical diseases</keyword> (NTD). The NTDs include Ascariasis, Hookworm disease, Trichuriasis, <keyword id="6360092" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="dengue">Dengue</keyword>, Lymphatic filariasis (LF), Trachoma, Cysticercosis, <keyword id="54776" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Leprosy">Leprosy</keyword>, Cystic echinococcosis, <keyword id="958654" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Visceral-leishmaniasis">Visceral leishmaniasis</keyword> and <keyword id="6429043" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="rabies">Rabies</keyword>. NTD’s are a diverse group of communicable diseases that prevail in tropical and subtropical conditions across 149 countries, which also includes India, according to <a href="http://www.who.int/neglected_diseases/diseases/en/">WHO</a>. A study by <a href="http://www.who.int/neglected_diseases/diseases/en/">WHO</a> affirms this in a report that suggests that India has the most number of total cases of all major NTDs excluding those that are spatially bound because of transmission through unique insects or snails (e.g., schistosomiasis, onchocerciasis, human African trypanosomiasis and Chagas disease). Looking at the figures, it is <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5863936/">possible </a>that India’s high ranking extends beyond the diseases currently considered as NTDs by WHO. Since India is the world’s second most populous nation and accounts for about 18% of the world’s population, it is expected to harbour a significant NTD burden. However, the fact these diseases are also associated with economic backwardness means that India can essentially have no excuse for topping the list. The tropical country, in spite of being the seventh largest GDP in the world spends as little as <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/india-spends-just-1-2-of-its-gdp-on-healthcare-but-a-policy-can-change-that/articleshow/64665303.cms">1.2% of its GDP</a> on healthcare. The result of this neglection is that more than 50% cases of dengue, leprosy and trachoma occur in India. While the cases trichuriasis and cystic echinococcosis in India account for about 16% and 12% of the cases across the world respectively, other NTDs - ascariasis, hookworm disease, lymphatic filariasis, cysticercosis, visceral leishmaniasis and rabies - are about 18% to 45%. Moreover, the cases of NTDs in India are <a href="http://outbreaknewstoday.com/india-ranks-1-globally-11-neglected-tropical-diseases-55417/">not evenly distributed</a>, but instead are focused in sections of poverty in both, urban and rural areas. If left unchecked the diseases are expected reduce India’s economy by impairing worker productivity and intellectual growth in children.  Internally, India has made a significant progress over the recent years towards NTD control and elimination. India is achieving a mass treatment coverage for almost <a href="http://www.who.int/neglected_diseases/preventive_chemotherapy/lf/en/">400</a> million people who are at risk of lymphatic filariasis. It has also has been committed to a multidrug therapy for leprosy for years now, however, it needs to continue or expand in order to reach 100% of the population. The optimal potential of safe and clean water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) for battling NTDs also needs to be realised. India, furthermore, hosts a sophisticated and extensive network of biotechnology organisations and private companies capable of developing vaccines, drugs, and diagnostics needed to battle the diseases. However, that hasn't been done yet due to the fact that new NTD technologies are not considered profitable. On 14 December 2017, a <a href="https://www.thehindu.com/sci-tech/health/neglected-but-treatable/article22717612.ece">collective </a>of partners working together to defeat 10 neglected tropical diseases, released its fifth report that indicated the potential of an NTD-control programme which is community-based. The report also focused on reaching marginalised populations through well-trusted health workers and free medication to the population. As per WHO‘s 2020 roadmap to eliminate at least 10 of the NTDs, India is committed to provide the necessary resources to remove the primary risk factors for NTDs which includes poverty. WHO realises that India’s contribution is necessary for its future targets. As <a href="http://www.un.org/en/events/tropicsday/">International Tropic’s Day</a> gets celebrated globally today (28 June), India could use the opportunity to bring greater focus on the solutions of these health issues.

Vivax, is not considered the deadliest strain of malaria. </li></ul>In the Southern states of Florida and Texas, cases of locally-spread malaria have been detected for the first time in around 20 years.Locally transmitted malaria — meaning that the people contracting the disease did not leave the country — has become a rarity in the US as a result of <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7808401/#:~:text=Improved%20sanitation%20and%20medical%20care,still%20exist%20in%20the%20USA." target="_blank" rel="noopener">public health measures</a> and the previous <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/malaria/about/history/elimination_us.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">widespread use of DDT.</a>But in Texas, the <a href="https://www.dshs.texas.gov/news-alerts/health-advisory-locally-acquired-malaria-case" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Department of State Health Services</a> confirmed Friday that a person working outdoors in Cameron County, Texas, contracted malaria locally. For this to occur, an anopheles mosquito — which represents multiple <a href="https://www.epa.gov/mosquitocontrol/general-information-about-mosquitoes" target="_blank" rel="noopener">species of mosquito in the US,</a> of which there are nearly 200 — would have to bite an infected traveler and then bite another person.According to the DSHS, although Texas sees about 120 malaria cases a year from international travelers, the last locally acquired case in Texas was detected in 1994. So far, no other cases in the state have been identified.About 1,400 miles away in Sarasota County, Florida, however, two more cases of locally transmitted malaria infections have been identified this year — one in May and one in June. The malaria identified is associated with the P. vivax parasite, according to a <a href="https://www.sarasotafl.gov/Home/Components/News/News/3269/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">press release from the city</a>. P. vivax malaria is considered <a href="https://www.cell.com/trends/parasitology/fulltext/S1471-4922(20)30074-X#secst0025" target="_blank" rel="noopener">more benign than its</a> counterparts but can sometimes <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK538333/#:~:text=While%20Plasmodium%20falciparum%20is%20responsible,significant%20global%20morbidity%20and%20mortality." target="_blank" rel="noopener">lead to severe or fatal infections.</a> Experts who <a href="https://www.vox.com/science/2023/6/23/23771154/malaria-transmission-florida-texas-mosquitoes-risk-prevention-anopheles" target="_blank" rel="noopener">spoke to Vox</a> said that while the cases were eyebrow-raising, there was no indication yet that this would be a widespread event.Dr. Photini Sinnis, the deputy director of the Johns Hopkins Malaria Research Institute, told Insider that although locally-transmitted cases aren't often detected — and there may have been malaria cases that public health officials were unable to record in the past — there have been <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/rr5513a1.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">156 locally transmitted cases</a> in the US since 1957 after the US mostly eradicated malaria.Sinnis explained that because the anopheles mosquito has never left the US, the risk of locally-transmitted malaria has never been zero. The real question is whether or not "this just a random event, like the other 63 outbreaks prior or is this going to now happen more and more often?" she said."I think we don't know, but as far as malaria is concerned, the mosquitoes are here," Sinnis said.The reason scientists are thinking about whether or not the US will see more cases like this is because, for years, health organizations have been warning that mosquito-borne and mosquito-transmitted diseases may begin to thrive in places they haven't before as tropical and subtropical climates move further from the equator. In April, the WHO warned that cases of diseases like dengue fever — an illness spread by two types of Aedes mosquitos — have already <a href="https://www.voanews.com/a/who-warns-climate-change-causing-surge-in-mosquito-borne-diseases/7043700.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">increased by millions over the last two decades</a>.States like <a href="https://wusfnews.wusf.usf.edu/environment/2021-05-14/florida-is-getting-hotter-and-wetter-according-to-new-climate-normals" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Florida</a> and <a href="https://www.axios.com/2023/06/26/heat-wave-weather-nws-warnings-texas" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Texas</a> are already feeling the heat of climate change, and Sinnis said that humid weather and areas that experience it are where mosquitos thrive. These emerging trends can't tell us exactly how mosquito-related illness could spread, she said. More research is needed for that."But I do think that scientists sort of raise the possibility that this could play out as such that there might be more transmission within the United States," Sinnis said.<h2>'We should be funding more public health responses'</h2>Because mosquitos inhabit humid areas near water, Sinnis said people who live in areas with these conditions should always be aware of the mosquitos near them and take precautions like wearing long-sleeved clothing or using mosquito repellents like DEET or lemon eucalyptus spray.They should also be <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/malaria/about/disease.html#uncomplicated" target="_blank" rel="noopener">aware of fever-like symptoms</a> — especially if they are immunocompromised — and let their doctor know if they are experiencing them. Although there are treatments for malaria, it needs to be caught and addressed early, she said."We have drugs and we're trying to make new ones but this is an underfunded area, right? Because it's a disease of mostly poor people," Sinnis said. "And we don't really fund the research much in the United States, but we have drugs that work and if it's caught early, people do not die."Beyond personal measures, local agencies and health departments that have seen cases have begun to target and kill mosquitos in the area, according to <a href="https://www.mysuncoast.com/2023/06/23/what-you-need-know-about-local-aerial-mosquito-spray-missions/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">local station WWSB</a>. In Sarasota County, Florida, officials are <a href="https://floridaphoenix.com/2023/06/21/malaria-in-sarasota-manatee-area-triggers-broad-insecticide-response/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">spraying insecticides</a> — a measure that could have effects on <a href="https://www.epa.gov/pesticide-science-and-assessing-pesticide-risks/human-health-issues-related-pesticides" target="_blank" rel="noopener">people's health</a> and <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2984095/#:~:text=Impact%20on%20environment&amp;text=In%20addition%20to%20killing%20insects,risks%20to%20non%2Dtarget%20organisms." target="_blank" rel="noopener">the environment.</a>Sinnis told Insider that more research and better funding will be needed to help public health institutions to invest in less harmful <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/malaria/malaria_worldwide/reduction/vector_control.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">solutions to getting rid of mosquitos</a> in the future. And at a time when scientists are questioning what mosquito-spread illnesses will look like in the future, this should be a priority."I do not think that our responses are necessarily what they should be," Sinnis said. "And I think we should be funding more public health responses."

The <keyword id="79024" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="New-Delhi-Municipal-Council">New Delhi Municipal Council</keyword> (NDMC) has issued 80 notices this month to the <keyword id="47718" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Rashtrapati-Bhavan">Rashtrapati Bhavan</keyword> after <keyword id="6360092" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="DENGUE">dengue</keyword> mosquitoes were found breeding at various places especially near residential quarters of the Rashtrapati Bhavan staff. 

	"During this month, we have issued around 80 notices to various departments to check mosquito breeding on their premises," a senior NDMC official told PTI.
 

	The civic body has also constituted a four-member team after a meeting with the Director of the President's Estate to brainstorm ways and means to control mosquito breeding at Rashtrapati Bhavan at the earliest.
 

	"The team consists of one member each from sanitation and horticulture units at Rashtrapati Bhavan, Central Public Works Department (CPWD) and Malaria unit of NDMC Health Department.
 

	"This team will review the mosquitogenic conditions at various places in the President Estate and will help in precautionary as well as controlling measures," the official added.
 

	The council had last week issued challans to four hospitals including AIIMS and Safdarjung, various government offices and a school here after dengue mosquitoes were found breeding on their premises.
 "We had issued challans to four hospitals including AIIMS, Safdarjung Hospital, RML Hospital and <keyword id="209925" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Lady-Hardinge-Hospital">Lady Hardinge Hospital</keyword> after their premises were found to be breeding ground for mosquitoes," the official said. 

	The Ministries of Finance and Home Affairs, Bihar Bhawan, Sikkim Bhawan and Uttarakhand Bhawan were issued notices by the NDMC for mosquitogenic conditions on their premises. 
 

	The council staff had also detected heavy mosquito-breeding conditions in five embassies including that of Ghana, Ethiopia, Singapore, Malaysia, Bhutan, Ethiopia and the Czech Republic, but no challans have been issued to them as the civic-body doesn't have an authority to do so. 
 

	The action comes in wake of the rising figures of the total number of cases from the vector-borne disease which shoot to an alarming 530, with over 440 of them being reported in August only. Two deaths have been reported due to this disease this year. 
 

	The dengue cases in the city is up this year by 251 cases compared to what was recorded last year by this time. 
 

	"We have issued a total of 137 challans this season for mosquito breeding inside institutions and households and served 3215 notices. 
 

	"During the inspection, if the premises are tested positive for mosquito breeding, they are issued notices. But if no improvement is found in the hygiene conditions during the next inspection, the defaulters are issued challans," the official said. 
 

	Earlier this month, the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) had also issued 80 challans to government and educational institutions in the city, including JNU, DDA, DTC and PWD, for breeding of mosquitoes in their premises. 
 

	Dengue a vector-borne disease, is transmitted by several species of mosquito within the genus Aedes. Symptoms include fever, headache, muscle and joint pains, and a characteristic skin rash that is similar to measles. 
 

	Doctors say treatment is symptomatic with no specific cure, so if patients use pain medicines indiscriminately there is a risk of becoming resistant to these.
