He said New Jersey-based <keyword id="23993132" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Alltech-Consulting-Services" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Alltech Consulting Services" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Alltech Consulting Services">Alltech Consulting Services</keyword> never responded to his notices. Because the door was essentially left unlocked, someone trying to steal identities wouldn't have needed to hack into Alltech's database — or even search that hard — to find the information, Fowler said. Alltech says on its website that "more than 1,000 companies" rely on its services to connect them with tech professionals. Business Insider hasn't been able to verify this independently. BI also contacted the company by calling its main phone number, sending direct LinkedIn messages to its executives, and emailing its main email address. When contacted through its public email and phone number, Alltech didn't respond to requests for comment from BI. Two Alltech executives, listed as the company's owner and vice president on LinkedIn, told Business Insider in direct messages they weren't aware of anyunsecured data or a breach. Fowler said the data exposed included email addresses, passport numbers, the last four digits of SSNs, and information on work visas. "The records also contained internal notes about their experience, qualifications, and type of job they are looking for," Fowler said. Business Insider has reviewed the message Fowler sent to three Alltech email addresses on September 10 disclosing the unprotected data. Fowler has previously flagged <keyword id="19906883" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="cybersecurity" source="keywords">cybersecurity</keyword> issues with a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-51682280">Wi-Fi provider</a> at UK rail stations, a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.wired.com/story/us-school-shooter-emergency-plans-leak/">software</a> company used by more than 5,000 US school districts, and a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.wired.com/story/confidant-health-therapy-records-database-exposure/">virtual medical</a> provider, among others. Justin Miller, an ex-Secret Service agent and associate professor of practice of cyber studies at the University of Tulsa, told Business Insider that leaving a database unprotected by a password or any encryption means "anybody could potentially access the database." It's unclear, though, if any other unauthorized parties accessed the Alltech data. Miller and Fowler said that the type of information left exposed by the database, including the last four digits of a Social Security number, could allow a cybercriminal to impersonate a person. "You're looking toward identify theft," Miller said. "Details like names, work history, your visa status, passport numbers, even parts of your Social Security number, allow for bad actors to piece together enough information to steal identities and create fraudulent profiles." Fowler added that incidents like Alltech's — and others he investigates — highlight how important it is for companies to protect their data. "It also serves as a wake-up call to the industry to review their data security practices and identify vulnerabilities to protect their internal systems and the personal information of the individuals they serve," Fowler said. Alltech's website says it was founded in 1998. It's unclear why Alltech collected job seekers' Social Security or passport information. The job analytics database of GlobalData, a data and analytics company, showed a notable shift in the pharmaceutical industry as companies are increasingly prioritising the adoption of emerging technologies and stringent compliance measures to safeguard against cyber threats and data breaches. An analysis of Company Filing Analytics Database revealed that cybersecurity dominated pharma industry discussions during Q2 2023 as well amid the push for digital transformation. "The growing digital engagement, coupled with the rising occurrence of data breaches, has prompted pharma companies to place a heightened emphasis on roles geared towards minimising enterprise risks. These roles aim to advocate privacy measures and develop cybersecurity strategies that enhance the comprehension of privacy-related risks linked to emerging technologies," said Misa Singh, Business Fundamentals Analyst at GlobalData, in a statement. In August, the global pharmaceutical industry experienced a 19 per cent rise in new job postings related to cybersecurity in Q2 2023 compared with the previous quarter, the report said. "In an era where data is the lifeblood of the pharmaceutical industry, the shift towards embracing technology and fortifying cybersecurity measures is not just a strategic move but a critical imperative. CERT-In unveiled cybersecurity guidelines back in April stating that VPN providers, cloud service providers, and virtual asset service providers have to store customers' name, IP addresses, and email addresses. But never has it been more critical for survival than during the last two years - as the pandemic forced teams into remote working. IBM’s Cost of a Data Breach Report 2021 reports a 6-fold increase in the number of cyber crimes during the pandemic. Over the two years of the pandemic, the cost of a data breach increased from $3.89 million to $4.96 million. With at least half the employees working remotely, it took an additional 58 days to identify and contain a cyber-security breach. The costs of keeping a company secure are increasing dramatically as well – $433 billion is the projected collective global cybersecurity spending by 2030. Interestingly, there seems to be no real water-tight solution for ensuring zero cyber-security risk, but security leaders keep developing smarter and sharper tools to minimise the attacks and risk. The risk is the biggest issue – in terms of data loss, as well as privacy breaches – both for customers and the company. Risks moving forward Ironically, it is the greater adoption of technology that will be causing an increase in cyber attacks. And interestingly, these new technologies are expected to find the roadmap for higher security as well. The next decade – with ubiquitous connectivity, artificial intelligence (AI), quantum computing and next-generation approaches to security management, could continue to pose challenges for security. <ul><li>AI is the case in point here since it allows the complete democratisation of cybercrime. On the other hand, it also helps to detect and do predictive identification of cyber attacks as well. Similarly, Internet of Things (IoT) environments provide very susceptible spaces for sabotage and extortion attacks on the supply chain, logistics, transportation, manufacturing and healthcare sectors, to name just a few. Frost &amp; Sullivan reports that over the next 8 years, the earth will have a complex network of 200 billion devices, averaging over 20 connected devices per human. As the IoT connected devices become more sophisticated in their capabilities, their vulnerability to breaches will rise too. </li><li>On the networking front, as 5G becomes commonplace and 6G starts to take root, data privacy will become a huge concern, since an increased amount of data transfer would certainly lay bare the nodes to greater and more expensive attacks. This ubiquitous connectivity is creating a shared infrastructure of services, cloud, ISPs, software, databases and supply chain. In a bid to increase accessibility, resilience and agility, organisations are inadvertently putting a much larger portion of their infrastructure at risk from cyber attacks, which in turn would lead to much higher costs and much more severe impacts. </li><li>As digital identity becomes commonplace, it raises the risk of exposure to all sorts of data. This is a calculated risk that enterprises need to take. </li><li>As software-as-a-service (SaaS) and everything-as-a-service become more commonplace, cloud providers risk becoming sitting ducks for cyber attacks and this will only become more vicious over the next few years or so. </li><li>Increasing hostilities and power play between developed nations is also driving huge <keyword id="6390833" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="dark" source="Orion">Dark</keyword> web activities – data attacks, stolen data and sold at ransom figures going into billions are being regularly sponsored by states. </li><li>The <keyword id="11121339" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="metaverse" source="Orion">Metaverse</keyword> is now poised to be our second world, blurring the lines between reality and virtuality. The users and interface need to feed much more information on the platform, attracting greater interest from attackers than ever. Security there will need to be very astute – it will have to keep data secure without compromising on its functionality or convenience. </li></ul>Bridging the gaps Traditional ways of cyber security do not stand a chance against the new age cyber attacks. Mitigation and response need to transform, but the enterprise environment has not yet realised this. Quelling future problems with solutions of the past has never worked, but organisational inertia could steep companies in these challenges for some time to come. So what’s the way forward? Skills are running in short supply, so the first step would be to equip security professionals with modern tools to fight modern threats. Leadership and stakeholders need to understand the imperative of budgeting for higher spending on cyber security – mere software solutions will not be enough. Investments will need to be made in research and knowledge support, and there is a need for stronger government policy and regulation. Threat actors will continue with their game of sniffing out opportunities and vulnerabilities over the next few years as well. As newer tools are adopted, newer vulnerabilities will be identified, newer attacks will happen. Dell Technologies recently teamed up with the Institute for the Future (IFTF) and 20 experts from around the world to work on REALIZING 2030 - a project to understand the future and forecast how today’s newer technologies will impact human life in the next ten years. It finds interesting points we need to be careful about. Using technology pragmatically will be one important point. Enterprises will also need to dramatically increase their adoption of cyber-security culture to minimise insider threats and zero-day attacks. Cyber security will need to be built into products and services, passwords will need to go since they pose a big threat of access loss. Biometric identification could be the best way forward. AI will play a huge role in identifying as well as mitigating risks. Hopefully, over the next few years, enterprises will be able to leverage computer security algorithms to help create security fighter bots that will pre-empt, predict and identify vulnerabilities. With the increasing number of devices, data security is only going to be at greater risk and the growing digital identity culture will certainly create more active ID threats. The balance between technological advancement and risks has to be carefully weighed in the coming years. Otherwise, the enterprise will have entered a digital ecosystem that will be an emerging behemoth with an even greater risk landscape. It will be up to security leadership to identify new roadmaps and ensure cyber risks do not grow in tandem with technological advancements. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Companies are leveraging 5G, which requires new cybersecurity approaches.</li><li>Professionals at the RSA Conference shared insights on securing 5G devices and networks.</li></ul>Increasingly, companies are leveraging 5G connectivity, whether through 5G mobile devices or Internet of Things technology. This means they need to evolve the way they think about cybersecurity.Business Insider spoke with several cybersecurity professionals at the annual <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rsa-ceo-rohit-ghai-navigating-5g-cybersecurity-2024-5">RSA Conference</a>, which took place from May 6 to 9 in San Francisco. They shared advice on how companies could improve cybersecurity as they moved into the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rsa-conference-us-national-security-5g-infrastructure-ai-anne-neuberger-2024-5">age of 5G</a>."For the office, factories, sites, campuses, 5G should be seen as an active replacement for WiFi," Nathan Howe, the group vice president of innovation at Zscaler, said. "This requires some serious rethinking, but the advantages are massive — once you get past that initial shock in terms of difference. Private 5G networks will change the way in which everything connects."Overall, professionals said that companies should think about cybersecurity from the beginning."It's much cheaper thinking about cybersecurity when building something rather than thinking about cybersecurity when it's already built," Andrea Carcano, a cofounder and the chief product officer of Nozomi Networks, said.Here are cybersecurity professionals' best practices for securing 5G devices and networks.<h2 id="ed7bb694-e61b-4d3b-80c8-2f68b867f288">Inspect and secure 5G devices</h2>Many customers are still trying to understand how to fully use 5G. Increasingly, organizations purchase and manage their own private 5G infrastructure.If they do this, they must conduct thorough security assessments, inspect the quality of the IoT products they use, and follow manufacturer guidelines on how to secure them, Boaz Gelbord, Akamai's chief security officer, said.Additionally, professionals said companies should understand what's connected to the 5G networks they're using and hold their vendors accountable for security, ensuring they make updates to software and hardware and mend any vulnerabilities.<h2 id="e153a997-51c7-4627-9efe-848f89c9be93">Use a zero-trust approach</h2>Several professionals pointed to using a zero-trust approach, which means systems should never trust anything entering the network and should verify all devices, requests, and users. This includes security controls over which users can access the network and which systems on the network can communicate with each other."Zero trust really goes hand in hand with 5G," Donna Johnson, Cradlepoint's chief marketing officer, said. "Even as your attack surface widens, you've narrowed the potential impact of any attack that can get through."As part of this approach, companies should have visibility into the traffic of their 5G networks and continuously validate and monitor end-point devices on those networks. That's because as more devices get connected to 5G networks, the bigger the attack surface becomes."From an attacker's perspective, the more things connected to it, the more gold mines there are for them to attack," Christine Gadsby, the vice president of product security at BlackBerry, said.It's also important to have a powerful enforcement layer, including enforcement policies and controls over which devices are permitted to access the network, Darren Guccione, the CEO and a cofounder of Keeper Security, said."We make sure the right person, on the right device, at the right time, at the right location has access to very specific systems based on their role," Guccione said.With more IoT devices, there are even more ways to communicate across 5G networks. Companies should use tools to check whether rogue devices are on their 5G networks."Because 5G includes IoT, it's going to open up a whole world of issues with monitoring communication," Megha Kalsi, a partner at AlixPartners, said. "As an industry, we also need to figure out how to monitor some of that communication using 5G."<h2 id="0447b89e-3e95-4ebd-a408-bbf2d2b64bae">Analyze risks</h2>Finally, companies should analyze their risks, the services they use, and how much of their data is exposed. They should consider possible entry points for hackers and how they can mitigate issues as they transition to 5G.This is crucial, given the significant gap between the speed at which bad actors can exploit vulnerabilities and the speed at which an organization can patch its vulnerabilities.Companies need to "go above and beyond best practices," Jimmy Mesta, the chief technology officer and a cofounder of RAD Security, said. They need to monitor for anomalies, verify workloads, and properly configure the products they use. As generative artificial intelligence is increasingly <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-secure-5g-networks-combat-cyber-threats-2024-5">used in cybersecurity</a>, some tasks can be automated.Increased use of 5G calls for updated security practices. "A lot of the standard practices today will not work," Carcano said. "That's the main risk. Someone will use 5G technology and try to apply old-school methodology to perform cybersecurity, but 5G will change and expand boundaries and work more in a zero-trust network when potentially everything is at risk."

Cybersecurity professionals share best practices for securing 5G networks

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Russian and Chinese hackers have been getting past Microsoft security.</li><li>In the latest attacks, Russians compromised the emails of multiple federal agencies, watchdog group says.</li></ul>China and Russia keep finding ways to get past Microsoft's security systems.In <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cisa.gov/news-events/directives/ed-24-02-mitigating-significant-risk-nation-state-compromise-microsoft-corporate-email-system">an emergency directive made public</a> on Thursday, the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) confirmed that Russian-backed hackers stole emails that had been sent between federal agencies and Microsoft — emails that may have contained users' login credentials.CISA's directive requires the affected agencies to take immediate action to determine the extent of the breach. Specifically, they must analyze the stolen emails for signs that sensitive data or login information was leaked. The agencies whose logins were exposed have until April 30 to reset their passwords and authentication tokens. CISA did not specify which agencies were included in the breach.The hackers, a group known as Midnight Blizzard that's sponsored by the Russian state, first gained access to the Microsoft accounts in November 2023 through a password-spraying attack, <a target="_blank" href="https://msrc.microsoft.com/blog/2024/01/microsoft-actions-following-attack-by-nation-state-actor-midnight-blizzard/">Microsoft announced in a January press release</a>. The group increased their attacks 10-fold in February, and by the following month, had accessed some of Microsoft's core software systems, the company <a target="_blank" href="https://msrc.microsoft.com/blog/2024/03/update-on-microsoft-actions-following-attack-by-nation-state-actor-midnight-blizzard/">said in a March press release</a>."Midnight Blizzard's successful compromise of Microsoft corporate email accounts and the exfiltration of correspondence between agencies and Microsoft presents a grave and unacceptable risk to agencies," CISA wrote in its emergency directive."For several years, the U.S. government has documented malicious cyber activity as a standard part of the Russian playbook; this latest compromise of Microsoft adds to their long list," CISA Director Jen Easterly said <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cisa.gov/news-events/news/cisa-directs-federal-agencies-immediately-mitigate-significant-risk-russian-state-sponsored-cyber">in a press release on Thursday</a>. "We will continue efforts in collaboration with our federal government and private sector partners to protect and defend our systems from such threat activity."Microsoft wrote in its January press release that the Midnight Blizzard attacks were "not the result of a vulnerability in Microsoft products or services."The company has been under fire recently for its security practices, which one government watchdog group says are "inadequate" and in need of an "overhaul."Last week, the US Department of Homeland Security <a target="_blank" rel="" href="https://www.cisa.gov/sites/default/files/2024-04/CSRB_Review_of_the_Summer_2023_MEO_Intrusion_Final_508c.pdf">released a report</a> from the Cyber Safety Review Board (CSRB) <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-security-issues-government-report-chinese-hacks-2024-4">detailing a "cascade" of "avoidable errors"</a> in the company's security systems. And those errors, which the CSRB attributed to Microsoft not adequately protecting its customers' sign-in keys, allowed a Chinese hacking group to access the emails of senior US officials last summer, the report said.In reference to the Chinese hacking incident, a spokesperson for Microsoft previously told Business Insider that "recent events have demonstrated a need to adopt a new culture of engineering security in our own networks."A Microsoft spokesperson told BI of the latest Russian attack: "As we discover secrets in our exfiltrated email, we are working with our customers to help them investigate and mitigate. This includes working with CISA on an emergency directive to provide guidance to government agencies."When asked if the Russian hacking incident was caused by the same security vulnerabilities that enabled the Chinese incident, the spokesperson only said that the two "are not related."

Pickleball courts can really be set up anywhere, with four courts fitting inside one tennis court. Padel courts' size and walls don't offer the same luxury.The scarcity of courts makes padel cost prohibitive. One spot near Kathleen's apartment runs about $38 per person for a 90-minute session.But padel's exclusivity could be both its biggest limitation and greatest asset. After all, a status symbol doesn't remain one if everyone has it.Sports can be restrictive. Paying for a country club is just as much about getting in as it is about keeping others out. Take golf, long a darling of the wealthy. The pandemic led to a surge in the sport, taking away some of its exclusive shine (and crowding courses).It's not a zero-sum game.
