"And, of course, you can take them with you when you move out."</p><p>Heavier partitions like bookshelves or wardrobes may block some sound. "A better option is to size down and free up floor space."</p><p>Welling suggested opting for a platform bed with a headboard and without a footboard to <a href="https://www.insider.com/best-ways-to-make-a-bedroom-look-better">maximize your bedroom space</a>. You can also choose a bed frame with built-in storage drawers. </p><h2><strong>If you paint your space, stick to light colors</strong></h2><p>Some leases allow tenants to paint their walls as long as they are returned to their original condition before they move out.</p><p>Save yourself a headache and keep any new paint colors relatively light. Likewise, thick velvet drapes and wooden four-poster beds in guest rooms evoke an elegant sense of sophistication. Henrietta's is a well-loved local restaurant, not least due to its award-winning bar program. They have better water views, plus original fixtures and exposed brickwork. Its 19th-century buildings underwent a top-to-bottom refurbishment making it one of the best-value stays in town, in my opinion. The location doesn't hurt either, as it's set close to the 200-year old Charleston City Market.</p><p>If you're feeling extravagant, I recommend the St. Philip Suite with its cathedral view, exposed brickwork, and a stand-alone bathtub. At the top of a winding road, it's a hilly climb down to the beach and a somehow even more hilly climb back up. But it's a convenient location for sure, with only a short walk required to get in on the festival's action.</p><div type="image" title="Hotel Bellevue front" height="1200" width="1600" msid="84663787" hostid="261"></div><p>However, Hotel Bellevue does not scream "most glamorous movie festival in the world."</p><p>The front is a shabby-looking building in need of some TLC with cars parked outside, a stark contrast to the splendid front of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/reviews/out?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.booking.com%2Fhotel%2Ffr%2Fmajestic-barriere.en-gb.html%3F" rel="nofollow sponsored">Le Majestic</a> - a chic, classy, all-white venue that glistens in the sun and has chauffeurs driving expensive cars from vintage Cadillacs to brand new Ferraris into the hotel's driveway.</p><h2>The lobbies: Made for luxury vs. made for convenience</h2><div type="image" title="Le Majestic lobby" height="1200" width="1600" msid="84663788" hostid="261"></div><p>Le Majestic's lobby is full of extravagance, with hanging lights, expensive jewelery on display, and even full-size stone statues. It's an open, airy, light lobby that guests are able to relax in almost 24/7.</p><p>Meanwhile, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/reviews/out?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.booking.com%2Fhotel%2Ffr%2Fbellevue-cannes.en-gb.html" rel="nofollow sponsored">Hotel Bellevue</a> was dark inside, and the only person you ever saw was the housekeeper who tidied the place up. </p><div type="image" title="Hotel Bellevue lobby" height="1200" width="1600" msid="84663789" hostid="261"></div><h2>The service level: Attentive staff working 24/7 vs. an impersonal phone check-in</h2><p>Indeed, while <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/reviews/out?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.booking.com%2Fhotel%2Ffr%2Fmajestic-barriere.en-gb.html%3F" rel="nofollow sponsored">Le Majestic</a> had an excess of staff on hand to help guests with whatever they might need, there was literally no staff in Hotel Bellevue. Instead, you had to ring a number outside the hotel room and be sent a code to get into the lobby, then another code to get into your room.</p><div type="image" title="Hotel Bellevue lobby" height="1200" width="1600" msid="84663790" hostid="261"></div><p>While I never felt unsafe, it was a little unnerving to seemingly not have any member of staff on site during my stay. If my phone had died and I couldn't remember the codes to get in, I felt that I might be stuck with no one to help me.</p><p>Le Majestic's staff, on the other hand, worked tirelessly to take care of each and every detail for their guests.</p><div type="image" title="Le Majestic pool" height="1200" width="1600" msid="84663791" hostid="261"></div><p>One member of the ritzy hotel's staff told me that a guest had asked her to talk to the police so she could be more easily let into the hotel during the busy red-carpet events that clogged the main road. Unfortunately, not even Le Majestic's staff had that power.</p><h2>The rooms: My hotel room could fit in Le Majestic's suite about three times over</h2><p>My own hotel room was exactly what I needed: cheap, convenient, and with a comfortable bed. I didn't need much else as I was out for the majority of the day and only really slept and showered in the room. So the small size of it wasn't an issue for me at all. </p><div type="image" title="Hotel Bellevue bathroom" height="1200" width="1600" msid="84663792" hostid="261"></div><p>Compared to Le Majestic's category one suite, however, which cost €8,129 (or about $9,600) a night, my room was minute. I slept well every night, and that's all I really cared about.</p><div type="image" title="Hotel Bellevue bed and room" height="1200" width="1600" msid="84663796" hostid="261"></div><h2><div type="image" title="Hotel Bellevue desk and chairs" height="1600" width="1600" msid="84663797" hostid="261"></div>The amenities and features: No expense spared vs. the bare minimum</h2><p>It's clear that Le Majestic, part of the <a href="https://www.hotelsbarriere.com/en/our-hotels.html">Hotel Barrière group</a>, is a luxury brand.</p><p>It doesn't miss a detail and offered as much as it could for the price of the room. The price included a lot of extra amenities, plus the incredibly attentive service mentioned above.</p><div type="image" title="Le Majestic extras" height="1200" width="1600" msid="84663798" hostid="261"></div><p>Hotel Bellevue, meanwhile, didn't offer much.</p><div type="image" title="Hotel Bellevue desk" height="1200" width="1600" msid="84663799" hostid="261"></div><p>When I checked in, there wasn't even so much as a kettle or tea bag to make a cup of tea - just a couple of biscuits.</p><p>Every part of Le Majestic's suite was also in top condition and full working order, completely spotless. My room was a little more... rustic. The paint job could use a touch up, while parts of the room either needed a deep clean or a renovation.</p><div type="image" title="Hotel Bellevue skirting boards." height="1200" width="1600" msid="84663800" hostid="261"></div><div type="image" title="Hotel Bellevue broken stool" height="1200" width="1600" msid="84663801" hostid="261"></div><p>My air conditioning was also broken and unable to be turned off - luckily, it was stuck on a comfortable enough setting and it was so hot in Cannes that I needed the cold air.</p><p>A couple of the electrical sockets were also out of order, while there was curiously no overhead light in the bedroom, which meant I had to light the room with two little lamps placed on either side of the room. That was a mild inconvenience.</p><div type="image" title="Hotel Bellevue air con" height="1200" width="1600" msid="84663802" hostid="261"></div><h2>The balconies: Sea-view suite vs. a parking-lot view</h2><p>Le Majestic's sea-view suite was incredible. The sound and breeze of the sea, the view of the pool down below and the beach directly ahead - it was all very lavish.</p><div type="image" title="Le Majestic view below" height="1200" width="1600" msid="84663803" hostid="261"></div><div type="image" title="Le Majestic room view" height="1200" width="1600" msid="84663804" hostid="261"></div><p>I was happy to even get a balcony in my own room, but it cannot be compared to Le Majestic's. And down below? The room did the job I needed it to do since it was a work trip, and I was barely staying in it.</p><p>But if I were to return to Cannes as a tourist, I would certainly splash out on a bit more luxury - just not to the tune of $9,600 per night.</p>

Keener</strong> is a registered interior designer and associate at Gensler.</li><li>Many people may have set up their home offices not expecting to be there for the long haul, but it's becoming increasingly clear we may be home for several more months.</li><li>Now you may be scrambling to create a better <keyword id="107407" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Home-Office">home office</keyword>.</li><li>But before you do so, pay attention to these possible pitfalls, especially when ordering furniture online.</li></ul><p>Like many others, I initially thought we would be working from home just a couple of weeks.</p><p>I set up a bar height bistro table in the corner of the living room as my desk space. But, as the weeks passed, I moved my desk to the other side of the room to face out the window to take in nature, and occasionally, I'll see a hummingbird quickly dashing around the yard.  </p><div type="image" title="Amie Keener" height="508" width="508" msid="77854061" hostid="261"></div><p>If you're looking — or needing — to improve your home office with some new furniture and accessories, it may be quick, easy, and inexpensive to order something online. Yes, there are many great resources out there. But a word of caution: look out for the following common pitfalls.    </p><h2><strong>Cost</strong></h2><p>Do you have a budget? Establish one up front. Include items like desks, chair, task light, ergonomic tools. Likely items are bookcase, file cabinet, and maybe rug or flooring material. Also consider accessories such as artwork and plants as they can enhance overall well-being in the space.   </p><h2><strong>Size </strong></h2><p>Grab a tape measure and test out what new furniture will look like in the space.  Consider taping it out on the floor with masking tape or cutting out newspaper or a cardboard box the size you are considering.  </p><h2><strong>Ergonomic factors</strong></h2><p>We are all spending more time in our home offices. Comfort is important, and good ergonomic solutions are even more essential. Do you need a desk and task chair? Or would you benefit from soft seating, like a lounge chair or sofa for some of your work?</p><p>Do you like to stand up and work? Maybe a bar height table and stools make more sense for you. </p><h2><strong>Location</strong> </h2><p>Does your home office space have enough light? Will you be on video calls? Natural light can always improve how we look over video. Seek out light sources from a variety of angles. Avoid all down lighting. You want to make sure to provide the best representation of yourself on video.</p><p>Consider the animals in your home: Do they find your workspace cozy too? I'm allergic to cats, but I get a kick out of seeing my co-worker's furry friends jump into the view of the camera. Having an animal join our calls has been a nice treat on occasion.</p><p>Take intp account the noise near your home office workspace; if you are on a morning conference call, will the sound of your toddler in the background alarm your coworkers?</p><p>Consider the temperature of your office space: Is it hot, will you need to add a fan or something to circulate the air? Will the noise of the fan get picked up on conference calls and sound like a jet?  </p><h2><strong>Connectivity</strong></h2><p>Do you need power/data cords? I miss my motorized sit-to-stand desk at the office. Consider cord lengths and distance from wall outlets. Will you need to connect to printer, screen, speakers, camera, etc.? You don't want to create deathly tripping hazards or risks of overloading electrical outlets/circuits.</p><p>I found my internet speed improved by connecting an ethernet cable directly into the router. If you can place your workspace as close to the router you may minimize future technology headaches.   </p><h2><strong>Product</strong></h2><p>Where is the product coming from? What is involved with shipping and handling? Most <keyword id="2191904" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="office-furniture">office furniture</keyword> today is blended with parts from around the globe. Does the company have customer support here in the US? </p><h2><strong>Freight</strong> </h2><p>Is the product insured as it goes from the factory to your home? What if there's freight damage? It's rare, but something to consider, with unknown shipping sources.</p><p>Stick to a reliable company that provides insurance, like the US Postal Service, UPS, FedEx, etc. How much time will it take you to chase down the right part?  </p><h2><strong>Assembly</strong></h2><p>Does it require you putting it together? Do you have the right skill set, tools and patience to assemble the new furniture?  If not, it's critical to find someone who can help in an affordable and efficient manner.</p><h2><strong>Warranty</strong></h2><p>What happens if your new furniture is all set up and a few weeks pass, and something breaks? Read the fine print; what is the warranty on the product you are purchasing?   </p><h2><strong>Care and maintenance</strong></h2><p>You want your furniture to last and be germ free as much as possible. Wood is always a nice feature for desks, but are you willing to take care and responsibility for it?</p><p>Are you like me, who often eats lunch at my desk? Maybe plastic laminate or metal surfaces are more logical for your space.   </p><p>I suspect we will be working from home in some form or fashion in the coming months, so it's important to have a well thought out home office furniture solution. We love our families and roommates, but it's beneficial to have a quiet place to break away in your home.</p><p>Also, you may find yourself using your home office workspace for other uses (paying bills, making out grocery lists, meal planning, writing letters, etc.). 10 ways to optimize your home office and the biggest mistakes to avoid, according to an interior designer

<p><keyword id="14272605" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="tan-france" source="Orion">Tan France</keyword> is holding his smartphone out at eye level, scrolling and tapping through it to retrieve a photo. </p><p>"He's shockingly gorgeous," France says. "Look how handsome he is." </p><p>France is referring to his son, Ismail, who was born last July. Ismail's face is a rare sight, as France and his husband, Rob, choose to cover it on social media. But now, the <a href="https://www.insider.com/cast-of-queer-eye-then-and-now-2018-10">"Queer Eye"</a> and <a href="https://www.insider.com/tan-france-wanted-to-quit-queer-eye-interview-profile-2019-7">"Next in Fashion"</a> star leans toward me on a gray velvet sofa in the corner of the Bar Room at The Beekman, a hotel ensconced in a 19th-century building in Manhattan's Financial District, eager to show him off. </p><p>"He's beautiful," I murmur, taking in the baby's warm beige skin and tufts of chestnut-colored hair.</p><p>"He's a fucking joy," France says, adding that fatherhood has put him more in touch with his feelings. "I've got a few siblings, and I send them pictures and videos every day." </p><p>France's decision to protect his son's identity felt natural. But the need to do so in the first place took him by surprise. "I thought that '<keyword id="12973719" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="queer-eye" source="Orion">Queer Eye</keyword>' wasn't going to be successful and that it would be a flop — we'd do one season, then it'd be over," he tells me. "We never planned on having the child of known people, recognizable people, and how that could affect them." </p><p>"I see so many <keyword id="6355064" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="celebrity" source="Orion">celebrity</keyword> kids, and they feel so much pressure," France adds. Starring in Netflix shows like "Queer Eye" has made the 39-year-old fashion guru, <a href="https://www.insider.com/tan-france-queer-eye-fashion-trends-this-year-2021-1">known for his style tips and gravity-defying coif</a>, a cultural fixture. These days he's more settled in that identity — and he's beginning to transcend it. As he expands beyond "Queer Eye" with "Next in Fashion" and <a href="https://www.thmbl.com/collections/was-him">Was Him</a>, his genderless clothing line, France has also expanded his sense of self, having his first child and grappling with what it means to raise a family in this beautiful, horrible, complicated world. </p><p>As a fan of France's since the<a href="https://www.insider.com/netflix-queer-eye-for-the-straight-guy-reboot-2017-1"> February 2018 debut of "Queer Eye,"</a> I've watched with pleasure as the Fab Five's most fashion-forward member enters this brave new world, balancing assertiveness with empathy. It's a philosophy he applies to all of his work; he has no problem, for instance, telling "Queer Eye" producers how he prefers to be seen onscreen. During his photo shoot with Insider in late May, he instructed photographer <a href="https://www.martinschoeller.com/">Martin Schoeller</a> to make sure the lighting would complement his brown skin.</p><p>"If anybody ever asked if I would play a terrorist, a taxicab driver, or a grocery store owner, the answer is, 'Go fuck yourself,'" France says. "I would like to believe I'm very, <em>very</em> kind, but if you insult me, I will be the first one to tell you: 'Go fuck yourself.'"</p><blockquote><blockquote class="pullquote-wrapper"><q class="pullquote-quotation">If anybody ever asked if I would play a terrorist, a taxicab driver, or a grocery store owner, the answer is, 'Go fuck yourself,</q> <cite class="pullquote-source">Tan France</cite></blockquote></blockquote><p>Raised by Pakistani Muslim immigrants in South Yorkshire, England, France has always had a taste for fashion. As a child, France mixed and matched outfits and wore multiple looks throughout the day, inspired by his grandfather, who owned a factory that produced denim products for Disney. After working at Zara and several other clothing retailers, he founded <a href="https://kingdomandstate.com/">Kingdom &amp; State</a>, a women's swimwear line, which he sold when he was 33, as well as a women's fashion brand he created with blogger Rachel Parcell.</p><p>France was vacationing with Rob in Las Vegas when a talent manager called him about the audition for <a href="https://www.insider.com/cast-of-queer-eye-then-and-now-2018-10">Netflix's "Queer Eye" reboot</a>. The fashion designer thought the odds of being cast were remote, but after several rounds of auditions, he wowed producers with his snappy attitude and sartorial sense.</p><p>The original "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy" was a trailblazer when it premiered on Bravo in 2003, helping to <a href="https://www.insider.com/we-us-ours-lgbtq-communities-and-queer-spaces">normalize the LGBTQ community </a>in the eyes of America at a time when meaningful queer representation on TV was scarce. The reboot debuted in 2018 at a more progressive, if more turbulent, time for the country. </p><p>The show took off thanks to its joyful, compassionate tone and its willingness to address intersectional issues head-on. The reboot's Fab Five — France, Jonathan Van Ness, Karamo Brown, Bobby Berk, and Antoni Porowski — have drawn on their expertise in fashion, beauty, self-care, design, and food, respectively, to transform the lives of willing participants who run the gamut from a shy manga illustrator in Naka-ku, Yokohama, to a transgender powerlifter from San Antonio, Texas. By the end of its first season, the show had nabbed three Emmys, including one for outstanding structured reality program. Over the years, it has racked up six more. </p><p>When "Queer Eye" first premiered, it felt like a safe haven for those of us wringing our hands over what the country might become. As I wondered what the Trump administration's colossal incompetence would yield next, I retreated to my couch and a show whose every episode brimmed with charm, exuberance, and messages of inclusivity. For roughly 45 minutes at a time, the world felt less angry and polarizing. </p><div type="image" title="Tan France holding a yellow hairdryer." height="2667" width="2000" msid="92416050" hostid="261" sizebytes="248338"></div><p>For France, the show was an unimaginable gift. "We get to be our queer selves, unabashedly," he says. "I've never felt like I've had a space like that before where I can be 100% comfortable to say: This is who I am. Like it or lump it."</p><p>He became particularly close with one of his cohosts, food expert Porowski, after the first week of filming "Queer Eye." Porowski describes their relationship as intimate in a playful yet deeply significant way. "We hold hands, we sit in each other's laps, and we're two grown-ass men," Porowski says of France, adding that he didn't have many queer friends growing up. "I think part of me is reliving the childhood that I never really had where I was able to be free like that, where I had a friend who was like him. It's the joy of the chosen family."</p><p>France's family expanded again with the addition of Ismail, <a href="https://www.insider.com/celebrity-parents-who-used-surrogates-2020-5">who was carried by a surrogate</a> — a process that he says was shockingly expensive and stressful. (A surrogacy can cost between $90,000 and $130,000.) Ismail arrived seven weeks early and spent the first three weeks of his life in the newborn intensive care unit. Still, France says that he's ready to do the whole thing over again — he and his husband Rob plan on trying for another child within the next two years — though he'll make a few adjustments.</p><p>"With the job that I have, and my husband's a full-time artist, we needed help," France says. "We should have done that sooner." He and Rob didn't have additional help with childcare for four months after they brought Ismail home; France describes that period as one of the most beautiful but "most difficult" times of his life. They eventually hired a night nurse for nearly two months to sleep train Ismail; now they employ a part-time nanny whom France calls a "life saver" and considers part of the family.   </p><p>The couple is currently building a new home, with a schoolroom, in Salt Lake City. They plan to host a community school with their friends' children and homeschool Ismail, motivated by incidents like the <a href="https://www.insider.com/timeline-of-school-shooting-at-robb-elementary-in-uvalde-texas-2022-5">recent mass shooting in Uvalde, Texas,</a> that left 19 children and two adults dead. </p><p>France says he's horrified by the violent trend. "I don't know if it's happened in my lifetime, a school shooting in England, so for me, it's completely shocking," he says. "Yes, I've lived here for almost 15 years, but I'm still shocked that this has been allowed to keep happening. So those were the main conversations I would have with Rob: How do we keep our children safe?"</p><div type="image" title="Tan France smiles in a white shirt as a baby's hand rests on his cheek." height="2667" width="2000" msid="92416052" hostid="261" sizebytes="107946"></div><p>He is also concerned about the <a href="https://www.insider.com/insider-database-2020-deadliest-year-on-record-for-trans-people-2021-4">looming anti-trans</a> and so-called <a href="https://www.insider.com/florida-sudents-fight-back-after-dont-say-gay-yearbook-censorship-2022-5">"Don't Say Gay" bills </a>that threaten to further infringe upon the rights of LGBTQ people — and children — in over a dozen states. "I don't understand how we got here," he tells me. "It does worry me seeing just how hard people are fighting to take rights away from people when they're just minding their own business. They're just trying to live their lives. They're not doing anything to anyone. It is wildly frustrating."</p><p>But there are some aspects of the US that he prefers to the UK. For instance, he believes his home country is "massively behind" when it comes to representation of brown people. France points to shows like <a href="https://www.insider.com/never-have-i-ever-season-3-netflix-details-information-2022-5">"Never Have I Ever"</a> and <a href="https://www.insider.com/the-sex-lives-of-college-girls-showrunner-nico-kimberly-interview-2021-12">"The Sex Lives of College Girls"</a> with brown actors in their casts, and entertainers like Mindy Kaling, Kumail Nanjiani, Hasan Minhaj, and fellow British-Pakistani actor Riz Ahmed — <a href="https://www.insider.com/youtube-asian-representation-wongfu-nigahia-michellephan">high-profile South Asians in Hollywood</a> who have become mainstream pop-culture fixtures in the past five years. </p><p>In the UK, meanwhile, France says his community remains largely invisible on big and small screens. "I think that the people in power don't believe our value," France adds. "They don't understand our value. I don't know what more we can do to show that we can be entertainers. I'm on a big show for Netflix. We have won countless Emmys — if we win one more, we've broken the record for the most Emmys of any unscripted show in history. Yet I'm still not seen as bookable in the UK for a prime-time show. That's an issue."</p><p>Stateside, France's career is thriving. He hosted the <a href="https://www.insider.com/selling-sunset-season-4-netflix-details-information-2020-8">"Selling Sunset" reunion</a>, which aired on Netflix in early May — an opportunity that came knocking just two weeks before the taping of the episode. France doesn't watch reality TV but believes he was tapped to host because he "can be a little more aggressive" than some of his "Queer Eye" counterparts. To prepare, he watched all five seasons of "Selling Sunset" over the course of two days on flights to and from London. </p><div type="image" title="Tan France flies in the air, holding a tuxedo jacket." height="1500" width="2000" msid="92416054" hostid="261" sizebytes="116488"></div>"I don't understand a filter, or I don't <em>care</em> about a filter," France explains. "I don't care about the weather. I want to know, 'Why did you get a divorce? Tell me about your relationship.' I don't do small talk. But I like to balance it out by truly caring about people and truly wanting to discover who they are and why they behave the way they behave."<p>France also recently wrapped season two of Netflix's reality show, "Next in Fashion." Filmed in Brooklyn over the course of five weeks — a shoot that Rob and Ismail visited from time to time — France doesn't know exactly when it will air. (Netflix, he tells me, can take months to edit and review a season's episodes, leaving even a show's stars in the dark about a release date.)</p><p>He is, however, willing to drop tantalizing hints about what exactly the season will entail. "For season one, it was all based on themes, like universal clothing that you would find pretty much in every closet around the world," he says. "This time that's not the case. I think it's more difficult. I think we pushed the designers to be even more creative."</p><iframe src="“https://cdn.jwplayer.com/players/jcJyDSeV-3pQvepeD.html”" width="“100%”" height="“100%”" frameborder="“0&quot;" scrolling="“auto”" title="“Final" style="“position:absolute;”"></iframe><p>Another change to the program: France is cohosting this season with <a href="https://www.insider.com/gigi-hadid-facts-things-you-didnt-know-2018-11">supermodel Gigi Hadid</a> instead of British designer Alexa Chung. The swap seems like a logical one, given France and Hadid have been close friends since they met more than four years ago through a FaceTime call facilitated by <a href="https://www.insider.com/email-hack-eva-chen-automatic-responses-2018-12">Instagram's director of fashion partnerships, Eva Chen</a>. When France and Rob initially learned their surrogate was pregnant, Hadid was the first friend he told. Hadid, in turn, has given France parenting tips on baby supplies, sleep training, and schooling. </p><p>"You've got to know how to work with somebody where you match your energy," France says. "So when you're on, you are down to play, you are a child, and that's what I am." When the cameras are off, he says, he and Hadid take mutual advantage of the downtime; they usually sit side by side watching TikTok videos or calling their respective babies. "There's a level of respect for how we work together like I've never understood before," he says. </p><p>Hadid says she learned a lot from France while shooting "Next in Fashion," from handling technical aspects of a show to softer skills like keeping conversations going with contestants while the cameras are rolling. There's a synergy between the cohosts, she says. "You never really know, you can be friends with someone, respect someone, and then be put in a work environment with them — and it's why a lot of boy bands don't work out," she says. "It was such a blessing that my and Tan's work styles are very similar. We have a similar need for companionship. It also aims to target Rs 450 crore in revenue for FY 2021.<br /><br /> Moreover, the company also plans to hire close to 200 people in the next couple of months. <br /><br /> The year 2020 has been difficult for organizations across the world. However, it is companies that have been able to adapt, stay agile and listen to its consumers and work on its offerings accordingly that have been able to weather the storm effectively.<br /><br /> So how has Wakefit, a 4-year-old startup been able to not only grow in these adverse times without cutting any jobs but is now also looking at hiring and investing on expansion?<br /><br /> Ankit Garg, CEO and Co-founder, Wakefit.co said, “We recently announced an investment of Rs 15 crore towards setting up of new facilities, expanding product lines and strengthening our focus on research and innovation. We believe that investing in Capex to improve quality, reduce manufacturing costs and thereby pass on the benefit to customers is the ideal way to grow a business, and we will continue to adopt that strategy while fuelling the next level of growth. Currently, we have six world-class manufacturing facilities – spread across Bengaluru, Jodhpur and Delhi – to cater to the growing consumer demand,” he added.<br /><br /> <b>The lockdown experience</b><br /><br /> The first two months when operations came to a sudden halt, there was a lot of uncertainty and confusions about the future. Supply chain had been completely disrupted. However, that halt also led to a lot of pent up demand. Moreover, with people staying more at home, they started paying more attention to wellness and sleep. <br /><br /> “As the lockdown eased, we registered an increase in customer queries about our products. There has been a perceptible shift in customer preferences, possibly, due to prolonged stay at home as well as crucial conversations about health and well-being,” shared Garg. <br /><br /> As working from home became the norm, Wakefit.com also witnessed an upsurge in the demand for better home solutions. “We understand that customers are creating their own efficient and ergonomic work spaces within their homes, while also filling the gaps in their home furniture needs now that they are spending more hours indoors. This has contributed to steady growth in demand over the last two months. We surpassed pre-Covid demand in June and are on track to do the same in July as well,” he added.<br /><br /> <b>Wakefit.co’s marketing plans for FY2021</b><br /><br /> Wakefit.co has had an interesting marketing journey so far. Last year, a campaign it did, inviting entries for its sleep internship went viral, for all the right reasons. It was a smart campaign, and appealed to a huge consumer base that was intrigued at the prospect of getting paid to sleep.<br /><br /> More recently, another campaign the startup did featuring actors Sumit Vyas and Rasika Dugal was also widely shared, for voicing what a lot ofus had been experiencing during the first few weeks of the lockdown.<br /><br /> So what comes next in their marketing journey? “Our goal is to build brand awareness and the best way to do it, in our opinion, is to take the stance of educating customers and to focus on innovative ideas and content that will resonate with our target audience. For instance, intelligent campaigns – such as our sleep internship campaign or the open letter campaign which went live during the lockdown period – give us opportunities to engage with our customers in meaningful ways,” said Ramalingegowda.<br /><br /> Recently, the brand also launched the ‘Wakefit Rewards’ initiative to provide value-added benefits to its customers. It also partnered with brands like Gaana, Cleartrip, Bombay Shaving Company, Ajio, 1MG and Parentlane among others to offer value-added offers on the purchase of Wakefit.co products. The collaboration was purely on goodwill, without any commercial considerations. This allowed the partner brands to attract traffic from Wakefit.co’s users without incurring any marketing costs while Wakefit.co’s customers derived value too. <br /><br /> On what kind of marketing budgets they are looking at allocating this year, Ramalingegowda said, “Our marketing budget allocations have always been made keeping consumer sentiment and situational awareness in mind. We do not believe in spending large marketing budgets for the sake of it or because other brands are doing it. We always think about the benefit it will add to the customer’s life and then create initiatives accordingly.”<br /><br /> <b>Going deeper into Bharat</b><br /><br /> While the brand is expanding its offering by diversifying, its next phase of growth will also come from going deeper into the country. Already close to 30% of its demand comes from Tier II and Tier III markets. <br /><br /> “When it comes to going deeper into the country, strategic collaborations will be the key. We work with multiple logistic partners, who have unique strengths in diverse geographies, to ensure that Wakefit.co has a robust distribution and delivery system in every corner of India. We have capabilities to deliver across 19,000+ pincodes in the country and around 30% of our demand comes from Tier 2 and 3 markets. As we grow steadily, we aim to target Tier 2 and 3 cities aggressively and target 50% demand from these markets,” shared Garg.<br /><br /> <b>Wakefit.co of the future</b><br /><br /> Both Garg and Ramalingegowda are confident that the startup is on the right path. <ul class="summary-list"><li>As companies opt to have employees <keyword id="123591" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Work-from-home">work from home</keyword> through at least the end of 2020, some workers are starting to indulge "workation" packages at hotels.</li><li>They can stay just for the day — or overnight — and enjoy new surroundings, like poolside cabanas with outlets.</li><li>Freelance writer Molly O'Brien visited three hotels in Los Angeles to check out their "workation" packages.</li></ul><p>Across the United States, timelines for remote work continue to extend and many <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/companies-asking-employees-to-work-from-home-due-to-coronavirus-2020">companies are encouraging permanent work from home </a>through at least the end of 2020. </p><p>In response, some employees have begun to seek alternative workspaces to get out of the house, looking to get some temporary separation from housemates or to experience a change of scenery. </p><p>In Los Angeles, many corporate offices still haven't opened due to safe gathering restrictions. A number of Los Angeles hotels are starting to offer up their rooms for "daytime" rental or extending their occupancy hours beyond traditional check-in times. </p><p>I wanted to check out some of the "workation" opportunities in Los Angeles, to compare and contrast their offerings based on their location in the city and the known reputation of the hotel's atmosphere. </p><p>I visited Viceroy Santa Monica on the coast, The Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood, and the InterContinental in downtown Los Angeles to experience how they're welcoming back guests — even if it's just for a workday. </p><h2>Viceroy Santa Monica</h2><div type="image" title="vsm_merryvale_2" height="1874" width="2500" msid="78128817" hostid="261"></div><p>First, I visited <a href="https://www.viceroyhotelsandresorts.com/santa-monica">Viceroy Santa Monica</a>, which took advantage of its recent pandemic closure to renovate the lobby space and spruce up its interior and exterior design. </p><p>As I pulled up to this 169 room property and admired the newly painted mural on the side of the building, I noted it was only accommodating self-parking at the moment — no valet.</p><p>Upon walking in, I noted the lobby is chic and modern, with a very Angeleno feeling vibe; the artwork on the wall across from the check-in desk is made up of skateboard wheels, paying homage to Los Angeles skate culture. </p><p>The "work from hotel" offer at Viceroy Santa Monica is an add-on to the purchase of a regular overnight stay in a Viceroy Grande Ocean View room. Guests can check in at 12pm, and have an entire day to enjoy the space, work and relax for $600. If visitors don't want to stay overnight, they can instead check out at 5 pm and the rate will be reduced by 20% for a $480 daytime visit. The offer includes a king-sized bed and a pullout sleeper sofa, as well as a spacious sitting lounge area with a coffee maker.  </p><p>The offer also comes with complimentary parking, a spacious business desk with a large desktop monitor — which many workers miss from having at the office now that they've been relying on laptops for six months — as well as a video game console with games (for when you need a work break), a printer, complimentary high-speed Wi-Fi, and an included bike rental (for when you need to work a bit of movement into the day).</p><div type="image" title="workcation room" height="3024" width="4032" msid="78128821" hostid="261"></div><p>I took a tour of the hotel with Kevin Anawati, area director of sales and marketing, who told me that this property is a popular destination for media and entertainment industry hangouts. Its four meeting rooms are even named after media that has been filmed onsite.</p><p>Through large open doors behind the lobby, I spotted the pool, where people were lounging in socially distanced chairs and chicly decorated cabanas. Use of the pool is included in the property's "work from hotel" offer. In fact, the poolside cabanas are even lined with power outlets so you can work on your laptop.</p><div type="image" title="vsm_pool_deck_day" height="1523" width="2031" msid="78128826" hostid="261"></div> There's also the opportunity to book a timeslot at the hotel's fitness center, which you can have all to yourself and remain distanced from others.<p>Out of this entire experience, my very favorite detail of Viceroy's "work from hotel" offer is the property's location just steps from the Santa Monica sand. Guests will have everything they need onsite to be productive for a day of hard work — all followed by an evening of seaside relaxation.</p><h2>The Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, Hollywood</h2><div type="image" title="hollywood roosevelt lobby" height="2268" width="3023" msid="78128830" hostid="261"></div><p>Next, I visited the <a href="https://www.thehollywoodroosevelt.com/">Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel </a>in Hollywood. This property is located just off of Hollywood boulevard, directly on The Walk of Fame, and across the street from the iconic Chinese Theatre. It's full of both classic and modern Hollywood history, and appropriately outfitted with 250 palm trees onsite. </p><p>Originally established in 1927, during the "Golden Era" of Los Angeles entertainment and architecture, this Hollywood classic hangout has stood the test of time, and remains a popular spot for local celebrities and visitors alike. </p><p>The hotel's workation package comes with complimentary day parking for one vehicle, complimentary high speed WiFi, tea and coffee, as well as an additional guest pass access for Tropicana Pool and access to the hotel gym (available on an appointment basis). Remote workers can check into the hotel at 9 am and stay until 8 pm, Monday — Thursday with the opportunity to add an overnight stay for an additional $50. </p><p>Rates for this offer start at $159, and visitors can experience luxury accommodations and escape away from the home office for the day in a pool view Cabana Garden or Cabana Balcony room. </p><div type="image" title="hollywood roosevelt room" height="1875" width="2500" msid="78128836" hostid="261"></div><p>As I pulled into the valet parking off Hollywood Boulevard and the Walk of Fame to visit the property, the experience felt like something out of a glamorous old-Hollywood movie. Before I was allowed to enter the lobby, my temperature was taken at the door. </p><p>The lobby featured a charming "walk of fame" themed social distancing stickers on the ground, for guests to stand and properly space themselves out. The check-in desk was protected by a thick layer of clear plexiglass. Even the magazines in the lobby were still encased within protective plastic wrapping, and there was ample signage reminding guests to wear masks at all times. </p><p>I toured the hotel with Juan J. Pineda, director of entertainment sales at The Hollywood Roosevelt, Pineda told me the property remains a popular spot for Hollywood executives to meet, and has in the past been the site of many TV and film events (such as the Mad Men wrap party in 2015). </p><p>While in-person group gatherings have been temporarily halted in LA, the hotel is still hosting guests — and spacing them out between every other room on every other floor. Pineda showed me each of the amenities "workation" guests could access onsite, including spaced out lounge chairs at Tropicana Pool, and dining service with temporarily modified hours. </p><div type="image" title="hollywood roosevelt pool" height="1875" width="2500" msid="78128841" hostid="261"></div><p>The Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel's workation package also offers the option to extend any daytime stay overnight for $50 extra. An ideal evening to take advantage of this experience would be on a Tuesday, when the hotel is hosting guests-only poolside "<a href="https://www.thehollywoodroosevelt.com/events/los-angeles/summer-movie-nights-at-tropicana">summer movie nights at Tropicana</a>" series, and screening well-known classics like "Saturday Night Fever" and "Footloose." Pineda told me this package isn't going anywhere anytime soon — the property plans to offer its workation experience through at least April of 2021. </p><h2>The InterContinental, downtown Los Angeles</h2><div type="image" title="intercontinental lobby" height="1875" width="2500" msid="78128844" hostid="261"></div><p>Finally, I visited the <a href="https://dtla.intercontinental.com/">InterContinental in downtown Los Angeles,</a> which is offering an "Elevate Your Work Day" package — a play on words of its proud status, since it's the tallest building west of Chicago (it's 1,100 feet above street level). The property is offering weekday use of its high-rise rooms for those looking to get out of the house. It's a newly built hotel, just completed in June of 2017. </p><p>With rates starting at $219, the offer includes use of a room from 9 am – 5 pm, unlimited wireless internet access anywhere in the building, office supplies, in-room coffee, espresso, and tea. It also comes with complimentary chef's choice Grab 'N Go breakfast and lunch at the hotel's downstairs cafe, as well as $10 flat daily parking rate (which is actually a steal in DTLA) and complimentary use of the 11,000 square foot Attitude Fitness Center and rooftop swimming pool. For an additional $50, "elevate" guests can also extend their stay overnight (with the payment of the overnight parking fee). </p><div type="image" title="intercontinental room" height="2017" width="2689" msid="78128848" hostid="261"></div><p>Many of the floors in the InterContinental are used as corporate office spaces, but the rest are hotel rooms. Unlike many hotels across the nation, the InterContinental never fully closed down during COVID and continued hosting overnight guests due to its central location in Los Angeles, and its ongoing demand to host pilots and crew members for flights out of nearby airport, LAX. The property offers 900 hotel rooms — ample space for allowing safe social distancing. </p><p>After I pulled up to the valet, director of corporate sales Cindy Tang told me the hotel is currently offering both valet and self-parking for its guests. </p><p>She gave me a tour of the particularly unique aspects of the hotel, including the corner "junior suite" with windows that showed views of LA for miles all the way out to the Hollywood sign to the Pacific Ocean, beyond. Tang said this style of room is a popular choice for workers who book the "elevate" experience.</p><p>The InterContinental lobby sits sky high on the 70th floor, but visitors won't waste any time getting to the top of this skyscraper — the elevators take just 40 seconds to ride to the 70th floor lobby (don't be alarmed if your ears pop!). Since it's a new building in an urban area, this property was designed to host events (it has 100,000 square feet of meeting space), and is equipped with modern amenities, including enough power outlets to satisfy any worker's electronic needs.</p><p>The hotel's location in DTLA is prime — it's right on the edge of the restaurants and attractions of bustling 7th street. When workers are ready for a break from the computer screen, both the pool and the hot tub are open and guests can even rent a cabana and order poolside food and beverage service. </p><div type="image" title="intercontinental pool" height="1875" width="2500" msid="78128856" hostid="261"></div><h2>Working hard, or hardly working?</h2><p>These three Los Angeles hotels have taken advantage of the opportunity to host remote employees and offer workers who have been toiling away in the home office for months a chance to relax at an onsite pool and enjoy a cocktail at the hotel bar after a hard day. </p><p>It's a smart business bet, as onsite representatives for each hotel say the offers have been extremely popular among Angelenos needing a nearby escape — these properties don't plan on ending their "Work From Hotel" offers anytime soon. The hotels are filling rooms that might otherwise sit empty without the normally higher rate of tourists, and helping contribute to a recovering tourism economy.  </p><p>The differing locations offer unique experiences from Hollywood to Santa Monica and into Downtown Los Angeles to get out of the house — and into the sky, out to the beach, or into a scene straight out of a Hollywood film.</p>
