Last week, Netskope announced that it had raised a Series G funding round of $340 million led by legendary Silicon Valley venture firm Sequoia Capital.The new funding values the security company at $3 billion - more than double its last private valuation of $1.39 billion when it last raised in late 2018. New investors Canada Pension Plan Investment Board and PSP Investments also participated in the round, along with existing investors like Lightspeed Venture Partners and Accel.Netskope helps companies monitor and secure how their employees are using cloud software such as Google Drive, Dropbox, and Slack. Netskope's software analyzes employee activity and notes when there's something suspicious going on, helping the IT department respond to incidents.Sanjay Beri, Netskope CEO and founder, said <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/top-13-saas-security-companies-according-to-it-professionals-2019-5#netskope-2">the company was already growing rapidly</a> and not necessarily looking to raise a new funding round, but had <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/impressive-startup-pitches-vcs-goldman-sachs-sapphire-ventures-kleiner-perkins-2020-2#netskope-funding-at-first-sight-6">so much interest from investors</a> that it decided that the time was right.In fact, Beri said, Sequoia Capital was the one who first approached him about the funding. He said the chance to partner with Sequoia - famed for its early investments in legends like Electronic Arts, Cisco, and even Instagram - was too good an opportunity to pass up. "They've backed some of the transformational security companies of the past decade," Beri told Business Insider, adding that the firm has also invested in many of the top publicly-traded companies. Sequoia has previously <a href="https://www.sequoiacap.com/companies/">invested in security companies</a> like Okta, Symantec, and Carbon Black (which was <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/vmware-carbon-black-acquisition-sanjay-poonen-cybersecurity-2019-10">recently acquired by VMware for $2.1 billion</a>).<h2>Continuing the rapid growth</h2>Beri said the funds will be used to continue the company's rapid growth and invest in research and development. The reason the company is growing so rapidly Beri said, is because most older, legacy security companies aren't looking to solve these new security issues companies have. Beri says that Netskope wants to invest further in its capabilities around using AI to help companies detect and respond to cyber threats.Another area Beri wants Netskope to focus on is sales expansion in order to get more customers, particularly overseas. Over the last year the company has expanded in many countries overseas, including Australia, Singapore, Chile, Brazil, and Germany. When Beri started Netskope in 2012, he wanted to build new, modern security tools to help companies as they undertook a digital transformation and moved to the cloud. Part of that was understanding the the role data plays in that transition. And the goal remains the same today, he says."As people digitally transform, they will transform how they think about their security, it isn't boxes in your office, it will be a cloud edge...so we've stayed true to that vision," Beri said. As the company continues to grow, Beri wants to keep building tools that will be helpful for companies in the process of moving to the cloud. Netskope declined to give specific customer figures but said its customer base now includes 25 percent of the Fortune 100, including companies like Apria Healthcare, Stroock, and Sainsbury's.Got a tip? According to reports, SEO phishing attempts are constantly increasing and hackers are targeting the employees through popular search engines such as Google and Bing. Cybersecurity researchers uncover a new trick that lets hackers plant malicious PDFs on search engines using SEO

The flaw allows hackers to intercept and read website information supposed to be encrypted, like passwords and credit card info. This problem was found in the really popular security software known as OpenSSL used by many huge websites and devices. That means Heartbleed was found in some of most popular cloud services on the Internet, like Gmail, Yahoo, Flicker, OkCupid, Tumbler and <a href="http://www.digitaltrends.com/computing/heres-a-list-of-websites-allegedly-affected-by-the-heartbleed-bug/#!DwSEx">others. </a>
The good news is that those sites have been fixed, <a href="http://mashable.com/2014/04/09/heartbleed-bug-websites-affected/">Mashable reports.</a>
More good news: hundreds of other websites are racing to get rid of the bug as we write this. 24 hours after the bug was reported, security vendor <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/chrome-add-on-protects-from-heartbleed-2014-4">SkyHigh Networks had found 368 cloud providers</a> that still had the bug.
Yet, a couple of hours ago, <a href="http://www.netskope.com/blog/heartbleed-remediation-status-for-enterprise-cloud-apps/">security vendor Netskope</a>, searching only cloud services that serve businesses, found 100 of those sites to have the Heartbleed bug. So the numbers of dangerous websites are diminishing.
Here's the <a href="https://netskope.box.com/shared/static/8zqjdc9580fl4rk5v3vo.pdf">downloadable document</a> that lists them all. Netskope will update this list daily, <a href="http://www.netskope.com/blog/heartbleed-remediation-status-for-enterprise-cloud-apps/">it says. </a>

Employees going to porn sites may be a symptom of larger human resources issues that lead to serious cybersecurity and legal problems."You can't avoid having an awkward conversation," says Steve Albrecht, an expert in the intersection of cybersecurity and human resources who consults with government agencies and companies. "Having that talk is critical. Your policies are your culture, and they have to be clear."Companies must have a clear policy about work computer usage – updated for remote work if needed – and that policy should be cited in email reminders and conversations, Albrecht says that remote work may be causing two kinds of employees to access porn on work devices: Absent-minded workers who have gotten a bit too comfortable at home and potential porn addicts. Both are HR issues. "Some employees may be doing the equivalent of making 1,000 copies for personal needs on the office copier. It's not malicious, but it is against the rules for a reason," Albrecht said. "On the other hand, if someone is addicted to porn, their use of it may go unchecked until they hit real consequences. That's why a policy that's clear and understood is really important." Legally, companies can be liable for creating a toxic environment if, say, an employee harasses a coworker by sharing porn on a workplace computer. At the other end of the spectrum, if a company fires someone for looking at porn on a work computer without having a clear and accessible policy, that employee can win a termination lawsuit. <a href="http://www6.austlii.edu.au/cgi-bin/viewdoc/au/cases/cth/FWC/2016/4954.html">In a 2015 Australian case</a>, an employee who was fired for looking at porn on a work computer after being warned about previous incidents won a $25,000 lawsuit for lost wages when a court found the company had not correctly followed procedures. <div type="image" title="Jared + Jennifer Pope of Work Shield" height="813" width="1084" msid="77416513" hostid="261"></div>Jared Pope, the CEO of Work Shield — a company that provides software for employees to report inappropriate workplace behavior — concedes that porn is "not exactly typically a workplace conversation." But as remote work affects employee habits, difficult discussions may need to become more common. "Addressing an issue or accusing an employee of viewing pornography is not an easy or enjoyable task for any employer," Pope said. "But, it's a legal and moral necessity."It's a problem regardless of whether it's happening in the office or on a work device at home: "Culture starts at the top," Pope added. The company, along with Kaspersky and others, sell software products that can send a warning to employees if they try to access this kind of content, and loop in other parts of the company, based on customer settings. Porn sites can be a significant source of malware, and past breaches of porn sites have been used to blackmail people, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/more-people-watching-porn-on-work-computers-coronavirus-remote-work-2020-5">Kaspersky found</a>."The increase in adult content and other risky behaviors is very closely correlated with the increase in people working from home," says Ray Canzenese, a threat research director for Netskope. "As the lines between people's work and personal lives blurred, they increasingly used company devices for personal reasons." That blurring of the lines is where the danger lies, says Pope of Work Shield. Companies' computer policies need to be specific during remote work: If shopping online at lunchtime is OK, and looking at porn on company devices is never OK, make that clear, he says.According to Pope, if a policy "doesn't already include explicit language that addresses the use of porn on company time, devices and network: include it."

'You can't avoid having an awkward conversation': Why it's such a thorny issue when remote employees access porn on work computers

The reason this bug is so scary is because it's a flaw in a very popular bit of software that is supposed to protect sensitive information, like passwords and credit cards.
The flaw is in software called OpenSSL. OpenSSL encrypts data as it flows across the Internet. You type your password into your computer, OpenSSL translates those typed letters into a secret code. The website has the key to unscramble, or decrypt, the code so the website can read it.
OpenSSL lets hackers grab that encrypted information and read it in so-called plain text, as if it were never encrypted in the first place.
The Heartbleed bug grabs that info from a computer's memory and tricks the server into sending the info to hackers. (Here is <a href="http://www.troyhunt.com/2014/04/everything-you-need-to-know-about.html">a more technical explanation of the bug</a>.)
Here's a picture of the Heartbeat bug circulating on the Internet, tweeted out by security researcher <a href="https://twitter.com/markloman">Mark Loman</a> on Tuesday when he found that Yahoo.com had the bug. Yahoo has since fixed its web servers.

Here's what the picture means, Krishna Narayanaswamy, chief scientist as security company Netskope told Business Insider:
"On the left side you are seeing the data as it is transmitted on the network. The data are represented as ASCII code. On the right side you are seeing that data transformed to human readable alphanumeric characters."
In other words, the stuff on the right is what the hacker can see and sometimes it's a full password, a credit card number, or other private information.

Although CryptoMove was one of those cybersecurity startups that got funded last year, Mike Burshteyn, its CEO, doesn't consider his firm to just be part of the pack. CryptoMove's technology is superior to that of other cybersecurity companies and could change the way cybersecurity is done forever, he said."It's certainly a crowded space," Burshteyn said. "I don't think there's any question that security is overfunded. But we have no control over the timing of our invention."While CryptoMove's name might make it sound like it's yet another cryptocurrency startup, the company's technology has nothing to do with bitcoins or blockchains. Instead its system is designed to secure companies' data.CyptoMove's system breaks up data into small pieces and puts it into containers that are like rows of virtual vaults, Burshteyn said. Each vault contains a different piece of the data puzzle, and the system keeps the vaults moving at all times, rather than letting the data just sit in one place. Together, the techniques help keep data secure by making it difficult for the bad guys to figure out how to break in and steal the information. The company's software can run both on servers in corporate data centers and also on public cloud services.<h2>'It's a father-son team, which traditionally, VCs get pretty scared of'</h2>Founded in 2015, CryptoMove emerged from stealth mode and launched its product last year. Now, just a few months later, it's announcing that it's closed a $6 million series A funding round at the end of last year that was led by Social Capital, the venture capital firm <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/chamath-palihapitiya-raises-600-million-ipo-social-capital-hedosophia-holdings">started by Chamath Palihapitiya</a>, an early Facebook executive. Burshteyn plans to use the money to help grow CryptoMove from a scrappy 11-employee startup into a thriving software company. But CyptoMove has already gone a long way from its beginnings. The company got its start when Boris Burshteyn, Mike's dad, recruited him to launch a business based on a security idea he'd been developing for a few years.At the time, Burshteyn was working as an attorney, counseling large tech clients including Amazon and Google on how to handle cybercrime and data breaches. His dad, meanwhile, had had a long career as an engineer, including stints at Oracle and Cisco. Boris' experience helped inspire his idea for securing data; he brought it to Mike once it became clear to him that the idea had market potential. "My dad needed a business partner - it's pretty much that simple," said Mike Burshteyn.It was this partnership that made Arjun Sethi, a partner at Social Capital, look more closely at the company."It's a father-son team, which traditionally, VCs get pretty scared of," Sethi said. "But we saw that they could work together for so long and build this type of product, so we decided we should take a deeper look."<h2>CryptoMove already has some big, notable clients </h2>Today, CryptoMove is a growing business with clients including the US Department of Homeland Security, and French bank BnP Paribas. Though many of CryptoMove's clients are hesitant to say publicly that they're using its technology - as Burshteyn puts it, "you wouldn't necessarily want to advertise the type of lock on your house" - client testimonials were a big part of CryptoMove's fundraising strategy. For Sethi, really seeing how the product worked made a big impact in his decision to invest in the company."It's pretty elegant in theory, but it's really hard to execute," Sethi said of CryptoMove's approach to security. "It's not a typical cybersecurity solution like everyone else, with a marketing engine behind the same product. It's a product that has a very specific value proposition that a lot of people haven't seen before." <h2>CryptoMove was excited to have Social Capital on board as an investor</h2>Though CryptoMove raised $6 million, the funding round was oversubscribed, meaning investors collectively wanted to purchase a larger stake in the company than it wanted to sell. So the company had some control over which investors it decided to take on board. Burshteyn said he was encouraged by Social Capital's work with Netskope, a cloud security company. Social Capital led the company's $5 million Series A round in 2013. "We were looking for a top-tier firm to come in, lead the round, and help us take our business to the next level," Burshteyn said. "Social Capital was very deep on the space. They got deeper on the business side and technically than other firms."In addition to Netskope, Social Capital has backed other <keyword id="6356323" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="Enterprise">enterprise</keyword> companies including Box, Slack, and SurveyMonkey. The firm made waves in recent months by using algorithms rather than in-person meetings to help it decide which companies to back in early funding rounds. The firm believes the algorithm-based technique will help move funding to founders who might otherwise be discriminated against.But Social Capital didn't need its algorithms to convince it to invest in CryptoMove. Instead, the firm's team met with the company on multiple occasions, at different stages of its growth.Burshteyn said he wouldn't have it any other way. Social Capital's hands-on and "team-based" approach was a big factor for him in deciding to work with the firm. "They were helpful before the round even closed so we saw a lot of value," he said. The term is a euphemism in China for explicit videos.But Yang submitted company records that showed his colleagues often downloaded movies or shows on their work computers outside business hours. He said that this may have caused his computer to become infected by Trojan malware, per the court.He also showed the court a photo of his office, which was an open space with no speakers, and said such a working environment was not conducive for consuming pornographic material, the report said. He tried to ask for $47,000 in damages in November 2022 but was only given $1,500 for leftover PTO that he didn't take that year, per the court.In the US, the rise of remote work saw a striking increase in the number of employees using company devices to access adult websites. The FBI <a href="https://www.ic3.gov/media/2020/200320.aspx">is warning</a> against scam emails seeking to exploit recession fears by requesting personal information in order to supposedly provide economic stimulus checks for Americans via new US legislation. "Government agencies are not sending unsolicited emails seeking your private information in order to send you money," the bureau says. Business-related phishing scams, which disguise malicious links that steal usernames, passwords, and money within corporate emails, stole some <a href="https://www.fbi.gov/news/stories/2019-internet-crime-report-released-021120">$1.7 billion</a> from businesses and employees last year, the FBI says. These scams are now targeting employees who are out of office as remote work in the US has doubled, year-over-year, <a href="https://www.netskope.com/fr/blog/remote-work-increasing-exponentially-due-to-covid-19">according to the cloud-computing security company Netskope</a>. Some of the email attacks have been vast in scale. Latest COVID-19 email scams target remote workers by citing economic stimulus checks, out-of-office bosses, and health insurance, experts warn

Today, it announced a $4.9 million Series A funding round on Tuesday led by Lion Wells Capital, O'Reilly AlphaTech Ventures, SOSVentures, and Collaborative Fund. The company also accepted funds from a "consortium of strategic angel investors." This is in addition to the $567,968 it raised in last year's <a href="https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/sparkdevices/spark-core-wi-fi-for-everything-arduino-compatible/" target="_blank">highly successful Kickstarter campaign</a>. 
The company also announced a new cloud-based operating system for its connected products, called Spark OS.
CEO Zach Supalla said Spark OS is unique as a cloud platform because it's open source. While Apple has HomeKit, its own platform for internet connected devices, and Android has its own home development tools, Spark wants to be a one stop shop for developers that want to be on both platforms.
"There's technical and structural advantages [to using Spark] but the biggest and most important thing is that our system is open," Supalla told Business Insider. "Everyone wants to build their products but everyone's creating their own ecosystems - like <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/apple-smart-home-2014-6" target="_blank">Apple's HomeKit</a> and <a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/wink-instantly-connected/id719287124?mt=8" target="_blank">Wink</a>, where everyone wants you to play in their world - but you also want to make your product self-sufficient." 
"You don't want to be an Apple accessory, you want your things to be able to play on their own too. With an open source system, we're not tying you to our ecosystem, we're giving you your own ecosystem and you can build your products using Spark to work with iOS and Android and Nest and Wink - all those things - and never be reliant on any of them. You control your own destiny."
<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image">Spark</div></div></div>Last June, Spark introduced its Core development kit <a href="https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/sparkdevices/spark-core-wi-fi-for-everything-arduino-compatible/" target="_blank">on Kickstarter</a> to much fanfare, attracting more than 5,500 backers. The Spark Core is a tiny cloud-powered development platform built with a small ARM Cortex M3, a Wi-Fi nodule, and compatibility with the Arduino microcomputer so hackers and programmers can build cool wireless technologies like security cameras, motion detectors, and even remote-controlled cars that all run over Wi-Fi.
Now, a year later, Spark OS is poised to power a new wave of Wi-Fi-enabled products including its Core device, as well as other products currently in the works including <a href="http://getniwa.com/" target="_blank">Niwa</a> and <a href="http://getcleverpet.com/" target="_blank">CleverPet</a>. Spark is also working behind the scenes with a number of big enterprise companies, which could not be named as their products are still in development.
"Spark [Core] was all about development tools, helping people build connected products. But now we're also figuring out how to deploy connected products," Supalla told Business Insider. "When you're shipping 100,000 connected light bulbs or security systems, how does the system work to connect these products to manage them and learn from the data they're producing and get them to do smart and intelligent things?" 
<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image">Spark</div></div></div>Since last year's big Kickstarter launch, Spark's team has grown from four people to 12, and will grow to about 20-25 people within the next few months. Supalla had targeted makers and the growing hobbyist community centered on building things with technology, but said he was surprised to discover that customers wanted to use Spark to deploy across thousands of devices for work and enterprise purposes.
This is a big opportunity for a company like Spark. <a href="http://www.netskope.com/netskope-cloud-report/" target="_blank">According to a report from cloud analytics and policy company Netskope</a>, there's an average of 397 cloud apps per enterprise, but more than 3/4ths of those apps are not "enterprise-ready." So people are turning to the cloud to get stuff done, but the clouds aren't quite there yet. Spark hopes to change that. 
"There's a lot of excitement about the Internet of Things, but one of the challenges is that there were no tools upon which to build," Supalla told us. "A lot of people that come into the space are coming from the web world, where you're used to frameworks and programming languages so you're never starting from zero, you're building upon other layers. Whereas in the Internet of Things, everyone starts from zero, from the ground level, which makes these products really hard and risky. So basically, there's been a lot of excitement, and we're taking away a lot of that cost and risk. The time and energy it takes to build a product from scratch, we can potentially cut off 6-9 months off development time and millions of dollars from R&amp;D so you're not starting from zero."
