The film is based on the life of Gunjan Saxena, then a flying officer, who became the first woman combat aviator to fly into a war zone during the 1999 Kargil War. Johar took to Twitter to post a one minute-long clip, chronicling the life of Saxena. "Her inspirational journey made history. This is her story.  Zoya Akhtar’s story stands out The story of a haunted nurse that was directed by 2019’s most successful Zoya Akhtar however received a thumbs up. Not only did she direct the critically and commercially acclaimed Gully Boy but her web series ‘Made in Heaven’ on Amazon Prime was a hit with the audience. She also brought star power into her story. Janhvi Kapoor plays a nurse Sameera, who is haunted while providing care to an elderly ailing lady (Surekha Sikri). The nurse who has plans to entertain her boyfriend, is haunted by unusual noises. The segments by Dibakar Banerje and Karan Johar received average reviews. Johar however fell into his old habits as he inducted a wedding scene in a horror film. All in all, the only ones haunted by the series are Netflix executives who bankrolled it. This time, however, on the right platform, Kardarshian-like shows are taking off with the Indian audience. The Indian shows – Bollywood Wives and Moving in with Malaika are so similar to the American versions that one of the stars mouthed similar dialogues too. Starring the designer herself, along with her mother, actor Neena Gupta, the show has emerged as a ‘comfort watch’ for people, raking in praises, and a fair share of nominations - even if no awards. Netflix also experimented in this genre (dramatized stories of real celebrities) with the film AK vs AK, starring Anurag Kashyap and Anil Kapoor. While it didn’t garner the popularity of OTT hits like Mirzapur or Delhi Crime, it did leave a mark on critics and cinephiles alike. These shows are another dimension of reality shows which have always been popular with Indians – on TV and OTT alike. Of course, there are also shows like Lock Upp and Bigg Boss which force different celebrities into close encounters and supposedly uncomfortable situations.  Keeping the present rate in mind, an Amazon Prime Video subscription works out to under Rs 50 per month, and even at full price would be a little under Rs 100 per month. This is a steal compared to <keyword id="128682" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Netflix">Netflix</keyword>, where the monthly subscription is Rs 650 and even, Hotstar, the homegrown alternative, which comes to Rs 199 per month. 
 
If you're wondering whether the cheaper price has any effect on the catalogue, then you're mistaken. Unlike Netflix, which launched its services in the country in January this year without much of Indian content, Amazon is paying close attention to the local market. Apart from being in talks with several Indian studios, the company has already tied up with <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=karan+johar&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Karan Johar's</a> Dharma Productions, T-Series and <keyword id="15354" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="mukesh-bhatt">Mukesh Bhatt</keyword>'s <keyword id="359695" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Vishesh-Films">Vishesh Films</keyword>, among others. Besides, one glance at the app will confirm that the company is focusing equally on Hindi movies and its own originals. The top scroll shows films like Sultan, Kabali, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=kapoor+and+sons&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Kapoor and Sons</a> and Raaz alongside Supernatural, and the Man in the High Castle. It wouldn't be wrong to assume that Amazon's combination of localised content and affordable pricing could well make it a disruptivce streaming service in India, dethroning Netflix.

For a country of billion people addicted to video and cheap internet plans — it is not an impressive number. According to CLSA data, not only have its daily active user number dropped by 35% since last January, it’s only a 10% of traffic that the top OTT player in India gets at over 16 million — that is Hotstar, owned by the <keyword id="149163" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Walt-Disney-Company">Walt Disney Company</keyword>. In fact, Netflix is only ahead of SunNXT, a platform that offers regional content. However, it’s not like Netflix isn’t trying. Last year, the streaming platform said it will invest ₹3,000 crore and produce 30 original shows. Some of them — like Sacred Games — have become international hits. Yet, it is lagging even behind platforms like Jio TV and Airtel TV. This is despite the fact that Indian platforms might not be as intuitive as Netflix’s algorithm, which works hard to suggest the ‘right kind of content’. Most of Indian platforms are also crude and rough to navigate. Yet, they are winning over Netflix because of their legacy content. For example, ZEE live streams all of its 45 channels on the platform and so does Hotstar. All the popular superhit shows like daily soaps in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu — that were only available through cable — are now available for streaming throughout the day. These platforms have found the sweet spot to capture the bulk of TV consumers that lie above and beyond the millennials. With content already in place, these TV channels simply shifted to digital at low costs. They are able to pass on these cost benefits to their customers as well. “With 70% of India’s mobile data consumption on video, OTTs are likely to lead the digital wave and provide broadcasters with an alternate medium to monetise content besides TV,” the CLSA report said. ZEE5, SunNXT, Hotstar and Amazon Prime are ramping up faster on content at a speed that Netflix is unable to keep up with. “These OTTs have about four times Netflix’s movie titles,” said the report. ZEE5 has a library of 3,147 movies and 1,153 shows out of which 70 are original web series. On top of that, it costs less than a third of Netflix’s cheapest plan at ₹199. SunNxt, a popular OTT platform in South India, also has 390 shows and 4,087 movies and cost 75% lesser than its cheapest plan at ₹199. As a result, investors have stopped considering Netflix a threat. “Consequently, even as Netflix service evolves in India, with unlikely widespread adoption we do not see it as a threat and retain BUY ratings on Zee and Sun TV,” says the report. Hotstar and ZEE5 are also going fast and hard creating original shows and employing new age film-makers to capture the target audience of Netflix — the urban consumer. However, the CSLA report excluded the number of shows they have in English and other foreign languages like The Witcher, Money Heist or Narcos - which are very successful. “Netflix is also not choosing to chase the mass market,” said <keyword id="824043" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Business-Insider">Business Insider</keyword> sources on the condition of anonymity. In spite of that, Netflix is still lagging behind in local content. It’s newly released Ghost Stories and Karan Johar’s What the Love failed to impress the audience. The Prime theory Netflix probably will never be able to replicate the diversity and depth of homegrown OTT platforms. However, it is also failing to compete with a global entrant like itself — Amazon Prime Video. While Amazon realised that it might never build a library worth thousands, it can generate interest by showing the latest movie releases within a few weeks. For example, Pati, Patni and Woh, a superhit movie that was released in December 2019 and can now be streamed on Amazon Prime Video. The Jeff Bezos-owned platform is also quick to stream new South Indian movie releases capturing real movie buffs and providing a ‘premium’ like feeling to audiences. This, combined with a wide variety of originals that are both Indian and international, along with Hollywood movies and series has caught the fancy of viewers. It also helps that Prime Video is much cheaper than Netflix. Even though it did double its annual price to ₹999 last year, its introductory price was ₹599. In 2019, Netflix earned twenty times more money per user than the top player Hotstar or any other OTT services. It reported a monthly average order value of ₹640 per user whereas AOU for Hotstar remained at ₹376 per customer,<a href="https://qz.com/india/1656626/indian-users-spend-more-on-netflix-than-hotstar-says-kalagato/"> reported Quartz. </a> Netflix reported an increase of <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/tech/internet/netflix-revenue-soars-700-on-desi-content-marketing/articleshow/71999990.cms?from=mdr">700% growth in its India revenue in 2019 </a>to ₹466.7 crore. It reported a profit of ₹5.1 crore. Whereas, Hotstar’s<a href="https://www.financialexpress.com/industry/hotstars-loss-rises-in-fy19-netflix-reports-small-profit/1761771/"> losses widened by 42.5% to ₹554.38 crore</a>. The Game of Thrones However, almost all streaming majors are coming after Netflix’s urban consumer fast and wide. Hotstar, which rules the Indian OTT market in India — like Amazon — diversified its content ranging from news to live cricket matches and also streams the popular HBO original Game of Thrones. The emergence of these new platforms in a crowded market have spoiled Indian consumers for choice. That is what probably caused Netflix <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/entertainment/news/netflix-has-focused-on-india-as-a-key-area-for-growth-exclusive-data-tells-the-story-of-its-progress-/articleshow/71467026.cms">to lose 0.2 million users in 2019</a>, especially since it charges a premium for international shows. Meanwhile, Netflix’s command over English content might also reduce as international competition increases in India. “Other global OTT platforms such as Apple TV+, which launched in September 2019, have ramped up in India, with differentiated content (mainly Hollywood movies); while the service is free for Apple users for a year; for others, plans start at ₹99 per month,” the CLSA report said. Globally, Netflix is popular for making its viewers ‘addicted’ and has also faced the flak because of it. But, Indians have been addicted to TV and its homegrown TV shows which are not necessarily brainy nor thought-provoking. Netflix is trying to bring in as much desi content by deepening relationships with leading production houses such as Dharmatic Entertainment and Red Chillies. In this space, it is still on the way to achieve what many TV backed streaming platforms already did. With multiple languages; a wide variety of tastes and a cornucopia of content — India is a tough market. Not to mention that its consumers are value conscious. Netflix is losing to homegrown OTT players in India — as the country remains addicted to soaps and movies

Mumbai, Apr 24 () Filming of Madhuri Dixit-Nene's digital debut, a drama-thriller, for streaming giant Netflix, has been called off due to the lockdown.The nationwide lockdown was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 24 to contain the spread of the coronavirus in the country. The yet-untitled Netflix series, which was announced in December, will be produced by filmmaker Karan Johar's banner's digital arm Dharmatic Entertainment. "Work had already begun in terms of shoot on the series, which is tentatively titled 'The Actress'. We did shoot for a week to ten days in India with her (Madhuri). But because of the lockdown the shoot got cancelled," a source close to the production said. Reportedly, the series focuses on a global superstar, who vanishes without a trace and how her life is stripped away uncovering hidden truths and painful lies.According to the source, "There are three directors for this series. Shri Rao is the showrunner and director. Besides him there is Bejoy Nambiar and there is one more director attached with the series."Madhuri has collaborated with Netflix in the past to produce a Marathi drama film "15 August".Karan first collaborated with Netflix as a director on the 2018 anthology film "Lust Stories" and followed it up with "Ghost Stories" (2020). Before her stint with Prime Video’s hit series on IPL, Chadda was known to play the off-beat roles like Bholi Punjaban in Fukrey - a hit Bollywood franchise. Later, she became one of the first few Bollywood actors to experiment with web series. Good TV shows from the DD era For Chadda, web series will bring bcl quality content like Hum log or Duniya which were a part of Indian TV, before they became mass entertainers with soap operas. Like many of her generation, she could not relate to Hindi television series and shifted to American shows. "There was a huge gap between the content I wanted to watch on television to what was available for my parents. When Inside Edge was offered to me, there was no Amazon Prime in India. When I said I will be doing this new web series, people were like yeh kaun dekhega (who will watch this?. But now, they are forced to take part in it," says Chadda, at the 14th India Digital Summit of IAMAI. Bollywood wants to be in par with OTT platforms A lot of talented Bollywood actors are finding a second coming in the original web series -- like Shefali Shah from Delhi Crime or Pankaj Tripathi from Mirzapur. "Two years ago, people used to say digital is the future. Now, it is the present. Some are exploiting the lack of censorship, while some are finding a balance. The production houses that are known for television, they tend to create shows on digital that are similar to television,” said Chadda delivering a critique on the quality of web series. According to Celebrity Brand Valuation Study 2019 by Duff and Phelps, web series are now attracting the best of Bollywood - including actors and directors. Anurag Kashyap, Karan Johar, and Zoya Akhtar are creating content exclusively for GenOTT, the report released on February 4, said. “OTT has changed my life because suddenly my audience is everywhere. It empowers me to be more complex, denser and [to not have] to explain so much. The shrinking gap between theatrical releases and their debut on streaming platform has left cinema hall owners and exhibitors worried about their future."With everyone quarantined, digital platforms are "taking us by the throat and pushing down their content every week", Chauhan said. According to him, the comfort of OTT platforms poses a threat to the theatrical viewing experience because it's an "antithesis to appointment cinema". "Theatrical viewing is fixed at a particular time, a location, which isn't the case with OTT. You can watch unlimited content online using free data. This is a huge crisis we will face. It's not like the gates will open and people will throng our premises." "Imagine if I were Netflix or Amazon and made an offer to the makers of 'Sooryavanshi' to release it digitally, paying whatever amount they think they could've earned in theatrical, How long will Karan Johar, Rohit Shetty hold back?"There has been a substantial investment in the film and it's costing the makers interest on a daily basis as we speak," Chauhan said. "Sooryavanshi" is the third film in Rohit's cop universe after Ajay Devgn's "Singham" and Ranveer Singh-starrer "Simmba". The film was supposed to release on March 24 but has been postponed indefinitely due to the pandemic. Raj Bansal, senior distributor and exhibitor, said China, where the pandemic began, recently opened theatres but not many turned up. "That's such a clear indicator of where we stand today. No one is coming to cinema halls. At least that won't be on people's mind right now," said Bansal, director of Entertainment Paradise, a three-screen multiplex in Jaipur. Internationally, too, Disney, which recently launched its streaming service in India with Hotstar, has put some of its movies directly on Disney+. The titles include "Frozen 2" and "Onward" which arrived for home viewing faster than they would have had the cinemas been open.In an interview with Barron's, Disney's executive chairman Bob Iger said they were considering putting a few of their movies on the streaming platform."There are some we've decided to put on Disney+. We already announced one, Artemis Fowl, that would have been released in theaters. Others we've simply delayed. In some cases we've moved things onto Disney+ faster than we would have. 'Frozen 2' was one of them, but 'Onward' would be the biggest example. It was in theatres when this happened," Iger said when asked about films already in production. Similarly, Universal put "The Hunt" on streaming while Focus Features' made "Emma" available for early streaming. Dispelling the gloom, PVR Cinemas CEO Gautam Dutta said he is not worried about the future of theatres and considers the lockdown due to pandemic a challenging but short term problem. In an interview to recently, Dutta said, "Out of home entertainment is not just about watching movies. It is about eating out, about socializing, holding hands and creating memories.
