<ul><li>The global streaming giant Netflix has just launched its Hindi-language interface in India. </li><li>Netflix localisation card may be coming in a little late with its primary competitor, <keyword id="2976376" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amazon-Prime-Video">Amazon Prime Video</keyword>, who launched Hindi user-interface nearly two years ago. </li><li>Netflix continues to lag behind Hotstar, JioTV, and Amazon Prime Video when it comes to capturing the market share in India. </li></ul>Netflix may have a fine collection of original Hindi content, like the record-breaking Sacred Games, but you still needed to know English to make your way around the platform. In a move to expand its footprint and reach a bigger audience, the video streaming behemoth is now eliminating the language barrier by launching a Hindi user interface. But it has come about two years too late.One of Netflix’s primary competitor’s in the India market, Amazon Prime Video, introduced its Hindi user interface way back in 2018, as did JioTV when launched in 2019. Surprisingly, homegrown Hotstar, which has the most amount of Hindi content, does not offer a Hindi-language interface. But that hasn’t stood in the way of its success. Hotstar has captured nearly one-third of the market share in India, followed by JioTV. Pricing continues to be a pain point Other than language, the other main barrier for Netflix in India has been its subscription price point, which is relatively higher than its competitors. It already tried to address the issue by launching a ₹199 per month mobile-only subscription. Their video consumption went up to 3.4 billion hours per month from 1.6 billion hours in 2018. “Doubling of these metrics at such scale is truly unparalleled. Our customers are actively engaged with us for more than 290 minutes per day on an average,” Ambani said at 2018 AGM. It is only natural that he brings this content viewership also home, into his own apps to create more value. But that dream is a bit far off. <keyword id="128682" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Netflix">Netflix</keyword>, Amazon &amp; Hotstar Jio has made few strides in the OTT space, after it acquired music app Saavn in 2018, and also saying that it would invest $100 million in it. The merged entity now has since been rebranded as JioSaavn, which claims to have 50 million songs in its kitty. Jio also has its own content platform, Jio Cinema which has movies along with TV series and clips. In spite of showcasing old TV series, movies and even new-age web series produced by AltBalaji, it is miles away in popularity from the reigning trio—Netflix, Amazon Prime and Hotstar. In addition, international content providers or OTT platforms are also going the extra mile to produce original India content, making it tougher for a newer Indian player to hold attention. These international players are putting money and star power behind their original content. While Netflix launched Leila starring Huma Quereshi in addition to ultra popular Saif Ali Khan-starrer Sacred Games and movies like Chopsticks which starred Abhay Deol, Amazon Prime too has spent millions on its new-age web show called Made in Heaven, Mirzapur after Four More Shots Please. With this kind of money flowing into original content, delayed plans may affect Jio’s plans to have a lion’s share of digital offerings in the market.

JioCinema Premium Subscription: Features, plans, platform support, and more

Content streaming giant Netflix has reported slow growth in its third quarter (July-September period) despite the social distancing times, admitting that it has much work to do in countries like India which are lagging behind in terms of growth for the company. Netflix said growth has slowed with 2.2 million paid subscribers in Q3 while the company added 6.8 million paid net adds in the same quarter last year. While the APAC region was the largest contributor to its paid membership growth (accounting for 46 per cent of all global paid net adds) as APAC revenue rose 66 per cent (year over year) especially in South Korea and Japan, Netflix has a lot of ground to cover in India. "We're working with local partners like Reliance Jio, India's largest mobile operator, where in Q3 we launched a bundle with their mobile and fiber broadband plans. As part of this broad partnership, we'll integrate Netflix with two of Jio's set top boxes," the company said in a letter to its shareholders on Tuesday. "We've also partnered with financial institutions in India to make payment processing easier and more seamless for our members, which we expect will have retention benefits," it added. Netflix said that its non-fiction series 'Indian Matchmaking' was watched by a quarter of its members in India and millions of members outside of India in its first four weeks. "We invest heavily into improving our product, partnerships and overall consumer experience. For example, in India in Q3, we localized our service to support Hindi in our user interface," the streaming platform said. "We strive to be a global entertainment service that can satisfy the needs of members all over the world. Commissioning and producing local language content is an important part of that". The company generated over 1.3 billion in net cash in Q3 2020. Free cash flow was positive for a third consecutive quarter at $1.1 billion. Admitting that the state of the pandemic and its impact continues to make projections very uncertain, Netflix said it expects growth to revert back to levels similar to pre-Covid in 2021. "With $8.4 billion in cash on our balance sheet at the end of the quarter plus our $750m credit facility (which is undrawn), our need for external financing is diminishing. As indicated last quarter, we don't have plans to access the capital markets this year," Netflix told shareholders.
