It reported revenue of $9.8 billion, a 15% increase year over year, and profit growth of 41% year over year.The <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/netflix-password-sharing-crackdown-worked-how-to-increase-subscription-streaming-2024-1#:~:text=It%20could%20have%20more%20tricks%20to%20lure%20subscribers.&amp;text=Netflix%20added%20almost%2030%20million,in%20the%20end%20Netflix%20prevailed.">crackdown on passwords</a> and growth in advertising-based subscriptions contributed to Netflix's success this quarter. Company executives and industry experts say growth in Asia had a role to play as well."You've got Japan. You've got Korea. You've got Thailand. You've got India," Gregory Peters, the co-CEO of Netflix, said in the earnings call. "This represents, again, that decade-plus investment in those creative communities, working with local storytellers there and making sure that they have the capability to tell their stories in a compelling way."In a shareholder letter on Thursday, Netflix wrote that Asia Pacific had the largest revenue growth rate of all regions, at 19%, compared to the same period last year. Revenue growth in North America and Europe, Middle East, and Africa was tied at 16% each.<h2 id="2fa86f36-dc86-4e43-b871-a1699220d7a2">'Persistence in Asia'</h2>Some industry experts who reacted to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/netflix-questions-from-wall-street-growth-ads-future-earnings-2024-10">Netflix's earnings</a> also pointed to its local content creation strategy."One of the main things about Netflix is just what they have done internationally," Ben Silverman, the chairman and co-CEO of Propagate Content, said in a CNBC interview on Thursday.Instead of just re-expressing content from the US, Netflix has also commissioned content in local languages for local markets, Silverman said.Netflix's greatest success story in the region has been the South Korean production "Squid Game." The first season of the game show-style drama, which was released in 2021 and follows a group of debt-riddled contestants competing in deadly games for cash, has been watched 265 million times globally to date. It's also amassed 2.2 billion hours of watch time, making it the streamer's most-watched show of all time, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.netflix.com/tudum/top10/most-popular/tv-non-english">according to Netflix data</a>.In addition to "Squid Game," the Korean drama "All of Us Are Dead" is also on the list of Netflix's 10 most-watched non-English language shows. The rest of the shows on the list are European and Mexican productions, three of which are different seasons of the Spanish hit "Money Heist."Last week, the Japanese manga series "Dan Da Dan" charted among the 10 most-watched shows in the US, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.netflix.com/tudum/top10/united-states/tv">Netflix data shows</a>.The variety of original content available of Netflix, and early investments in Japan and Korea, are playing a role in its growth, Dhivya T, the lead analyst of content and platform insights at Media Partners Asia, told Business Insider."Netflix's edge may be in its consistency and persistence in Asia," the analyst said.Netflix appears committed to experimenting with different approaches to local content to meet local market needs, whether it's high-budget originals, licensing free TV dramas, or post-theatrical movies, the analyst said."Beyond content, lower pricing and a concerted crackdown on password sharing has also helped boost Netflix's sub growth in Asia's emerging markets over the past year," she added.Netflix rose 5% in after-hours trading on Thursday. Will Season 2 address these issues and deliver a more satisfying story? Being an absolute fool for historical fiction that I am, the announcement of a period drama with a prominent female cast set in pre-Independence India had me dancing a little jig. The fact that this was the Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s labour of love was the icing on the cake, with the amazing cast being the cherry on the top. However, when Heeramandi hit our screens, it quickly became apparent that no amount of grandeur, powerful acting or even Aditi Rao Hydari’s mesmerising gaja gamini walk was going to be able to save the show. Heeramandi draws inspiration from the lives of tawaifs in Lahore's famed red-light district, with its first season unfolding against the backdrop of India's struggle for independence. The ensemble cast featured talents such as Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha, Aditi Rao Hydari, Richa Chadda, among others. Season 1 takes off on a high note, and does a fantastic job of capturing viewers in its web of opulence and beauty. It gets the set, costumes and choreographies right, but all these trappings that Bhansali employs to bring what he’d imagined to our screens turn out to be just, well, trappings. Instead of being glued to my seat as I’d expected, I found myself just reluctantly sitting through the show, looking for any excuse to abandon my seat. To put it plainly — and it hurts my tonsils to even say this after eagerly waiting for the show for months — Heeramandi was kinda boring. A few episodes in, it becomes increasingly obvious that Bhansali was more invested in the set design than a well-rounded screenplay. As nice as the performances delivered by the cast was, there was way too much happening, making it hard to keep track of what was going on in spite of the pacing being sluggish. Plenty of subplots were created but barely any efforts were made to see them to the end — the same applying to character design as well. For instance, despite trying her best to make up for it with her acting, the character arc of <keyword id="22012158" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sanjeeda-sheik" source="keywords">Sanjeeda Sheik</keyword>, who was playing Waheeda, was incomplete at best. What was especially jarring was the fact that the tawaifs, who were each rather self-absorbed by their own tumultuous personal lives for most of the show, abruptly decided to bury all their hatchets in the final episode of the season for the sake of azadi. The first season ended with the death of beloved characters like Bibbojaan and Nawab Tajdar. Heeramadi’s future hung in uncertainty as the Nawabs abandoned their patronage. Now, as viewers await the aftermath of these events, Sanjay Leela Bhansali hints that the new chapter will unfold with the tawaifs venturing into the worlds of Kolkata and Mumbai's film industries, trading their talents for new audiences. And I can’t help but be just the slightest bit apprehensive about the upcoming season. If the writing and pacing felt haphazard after Sanjay Leela Bhansali dreamt of making Heeramandi for 20 years and spent another three years making it, I shudder to think how the next season — which seems like an afterthought — would turn out. With a fresh plot on the horizon, audiences anticipate the introduction of new faces to enrich the narrative. The official teasers and trailers are yet to be released and the fate of surviving characters remains undisclosed, but it will be interesting to see if key actors will come back for Season 2. Viewers might be particularly curious to see if Mr Bhansali’s niece, <keyword id="20411932" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sharmin-segal" source="keywords">Sharmin Segal</keyword>, would return as Alamzeb after all the criticism thrown her way. Will Mr Bhansali pull up his socks after all the criticism thrown his way or will Heeramandi Season 2 also rely on seasoned actors shouldering a choppy script? Only time will tell. New Delhi: The merger of media assets of Reliance Industries and the India business of global media house the Walt Disney is expected to be complete by the end of the third quarter of this fiscal, according to a regulatory filing by billionaire Mukesh Ambani-led group. The fair trade regulator CCI has already approved the merger of Viacom 18 and <keyword id="19976122" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Star-India" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Star India" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Star India">Star India</keyword> and NCLT (National Company Law Tribunal) has sanctioned the scheme regarding it. "The companies are in the process of obtaining other requisite approvals for the completion of the transaction and transaction closer is expected in 3Q FY 25," informed Reliance Industries on Monday in its quarter earning statement. The merger of Reliance group-controlled media assets - TV18 Broadcast and E18 - with Network18 Media &amp; Investments has already been sanctioned by the NCLT and was made effective on October 3, it said. Earlier on September 27, the government approved the transfer of licenses relating to Non News &amp; Current Affairs TV channels held by media entities of Reliance Industries to Star India. "The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India, vide its order dated September 27, has granted its approval for transfer of Licenses relating to Non News &amp; Current Affairs TV channels held by <keyword id="19976121" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Viacom18" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Viacom18" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Viacom18">Viacom18</keyword> Media Private Limited in favour of Star India," it had said. Viacom18 is the holding company that owns the media and entertainment business of billionaire Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries and Bodhi Tree Systems. Both sides are in the final stages of the merger, making some adjustments in the business as per the Competition Commission of India (CCI) directions. On August 30, the NCLT had approved the scheme of merger of Viacom18 Media and Digital 18 Media, holding media and entertainment assets of Reliance Industries with Star India. The scheme had proposed the transfer and vesting of Media Operations Undertaking from Viacom 18 and Jio Cinema into Digital18, which is a subsidiary of Viacom 18. This would be followed by "demerger, transfer and vesting of V18 Undertaking from Digital 18 into Star India". The merger of the media assets of Reliance Industries and The Walt Disney Co.'s India business will create the country's largest media empire worth over Rs 70,000 crore. Earlier, the CCI had said it has cleared the "proposed combination involving Reliance Industries Ltd, Viacom18 Media Pvt Ltd, Digital18 Media Ltd, Star India Pvt Ltd and Star Television Productions Ltd, subject to the compliance of voluntary modifications". Viacom18 is part of the RIL group, and Star India is wholly owned by The <keyword id="19986269" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Walt-Disney-Company" source="keywords">Walt Disney Company</keyword>. Star Television Productions, a company incorporated in the British Virgin Islands, is owned indirectly by Walt Disney. The CCI, however, did not disclose voluntary modifications in the original deal made by the two parties. As per the deal, Mukesh Ambani-led RIL and its affiliates will hold 63.16 per cent of the combined entity that will house two streaming services and 120 television channels. Walt Disney will hold the remaining 36.84 per cent stake in the combined entity, which will also be India's largest media house. Reliance Industries has also agreed to invest close to Rs 11,500 crore into the joint venture to give it the muscle to fight rivals like Japan's Sony and Netflix. Nita Ambani, wife of billionaire and RIL Chairman <keyword id="19916798" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mukesh-Ambani" source="keywords">Mukesh Ambani</keyword>, will head the joint venture, while Uday Shankar will be the vice-chairperson.

During the earnings call, Netflix co-founder and chairman Reed Hastings spoke about the company’s India investment and why the country remains a tremendous opportunity. However, Hastings didn’t hold back to say that the investment in India remains speculative. “India, we're still figuring things out. And so that investment takes some guts and belief forward-looking. But the other investments you should think of, just like rich European countries, content exports really well, and we're just getting a little better every month on it,” he said. Hastings compared India’s growth chapter to the success the company has seen in Korea, Japan, where the country has doubled down on original content. “(About India) I would say we're still mostly focused on getting a content fit and getting broader content. So that's why I'd say that one is a more speculative investment than, say, Korea or Japan, which, again, 5 years ago was very speculative when we did those, okay? But we've got off – we're over the hump on that,” he said. The streaming giant’s top executives remained bullish about India and it being a ‘tremendous opportunity’. Earlier, Netflix had <a href="https://techcrunch.com/2021/03/03/netflix-to-release-41-original-indian-shows-and-movies-this-year/">announced</a> its plans to release 41 new original productions this year, in India alone. Theodore A. Sarandos, Netflix’s co-CEO, chief content officer and director said that in India, the wait is worth it. “It's just, like all great opportunities, it's a long journey, and it's a challenge. And we think it's worth it. And that's why we're investing early and trying to stay ahead of it. And I think we'll be able to see those kinds of results that we've seen in other places in the world as we continue to learn more and more and more,” he said. So, even though Indian remains a low ARPU (average revenue per user) market, it has only pushed the company for more pricing experiments. Gregory Peters, Netflix’s chief operating officer and chief product officer, said that the company is still trying to figure out the right pricing model for India. Netflix has gone from desktop only plans starting at ₹699 per month, to introducing mobile only plans in India for as low as ₹199. They have also built partnerships with the likes of Jio, Asia’s richest man Mukesh Ambani’s telecom and digital platform. Peters spoke about a successful strategy for them has been leveraging go-to-market partners who have existing relationships with consumers and use them to push Netflix service and then have them make it ‘easy to pay’. “The ultimate and easy to pay is it just included the sort of bundled offerings that we've been doing more and more of, and Jio is a great example of a partner we've been working with there to really bring the service to a new demographic at a very, very low price associated with low-cost mobile plans that they're offering as well as home-based IPTV plans. And those have been successful for us as well,” said Peters. With 65 plus yearly title launches and a stated aim of gaining 10-15 million Indian subscribers, Lionsgate Play is competing against <keyword id="3194526" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="netflix-india" source="Orion">Netflix India</keyword>, <keyword id="3380874" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="amazon-prime-india" source="Orion">Amazon Prime India</keyword>, <keyword id="163880" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="apple-tv" source="Orion">Apple TV</keyword> Originals and Disney+Hotstar for eyeballs. We have seen that the trend of content is pretty consistent over a period of time. There are two or three pieces of content that work – one, good stories always find audiences. Second, their genre also plays a role. We did Hiccups and Hookups which is a very urban story but it found great audiences across the country. Jungle Cry was about a bunch of boys who participated in a rugby championship. Typically we have seen that action, thriller genres slightly outperformed the other genres. Their engagement levels are higher. When it comes to gender diversity in shows and movies, what has been Lionsgate's approach in India? We are the torchbearers for gender diversity. Our lineup of shows have female protagonists. Even when we launched our first edition in India, we had female leads in Hiccups and Hookups. We are consistently working around two accounts- gender diversity and inclusion. Lionsgate has also gone and represented African-American, Hispanic and Latin American communities on a global stage. The industry itself is changing as it is moving away from a male-centric view. It is now talent as opposed to gender. How is Lionsgate Play investing in regional cinema and content? We are trying to represent India as a whole but as of now we are slightly more focused on Hindi along with our Hollywood content. As we evolve in southeast Asia, we are going to look at regional Indian content. As of now, that is not a priority. Jungle Cry is a great example of how it does not need to be a local dialect but a local story also works wonders. We are currently releasing 65 plus titles in a year. Globally, our budget is around $2 billion. Which movies are creating the most amount of buzz? Feels Like Home is coming up with its second season. We are premiering Serpent Queen, Jerusalem, Unscripted Graham Norton and we just did Emmys. We want to present the type of content that customers have something to look forward to every Friday. How many minutes does an average user spend using Lionsgate Play? Our completion rate for series and movies is very high. Feels like Home alone had a 50% completion rate, which is significant. If we quantify our series, at least two to five episodes are being consumed. An average time spent per user on Lionsgate India is at least 80 minutes, sometimes going upwards (to) 100 minutes. How has the partnership with prime channels helped Lionsgate in India? We are also one of the largest partners globally when it comes to partnership with prime channels. In India, we have had a fantastic partnership with our launch of prime channels in the past 12 months. The subscribers in India on Lionsgate are paying annual subscriptions directly as opposed to monthly subscriptions. Apart from Hindi, what language shows are Indians interested in? What OTT has done is reduced the language barrier considerably and made the audience slightly language agnostic. Earlier, the only way you could watch a dubbed movie was in a theatre or on television but it did not create any considerable monetary opportunity and OTT has tapped into that market – whether it is Korean content popular in India, or Malayalam, Tamil and Telugu content being watched in Hindi speaking markets. We did a great experiment with a dubbed Arabic movie called The Ambush and because of great content, it performed excellently in India. Can OTTs hold their own space with theatre releases by Bollywood? Brahmāstra was recently released in theatres and even though it will be released on OTT soon, I went to watch it in a theatre. The experience in a theatre is different. That experience cannot be replicated on a small screen. What OTT does is it lets you watch at the time and place of your choosing. Each has a different need they are serving. Lionsgate also looks forward to onboarding upcoming Bollywood movies. As a result, accounts are being shared between households – impacting our ability to invest in great new TV and films for our members.” So, Netflix will now start charging extra for users outside their households as a way to prevent password sharing in these markets, to begin with, and later evaluate whether to bring it to other markets. It is adding two features to curb sharing – ‘Add Extra Member’ and ‘Transfer Profile to New Account.’ While Netflix hasn’t given any indication as to whether it plans to expand this new feature beyond initial test markets, if it does, it could have a negative impact on its rather <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/news/netflix-added-8-3-million-paid-subscribers-in-last-quarter-its-slowest-growth-since-2015/articleshow/89033252.cms">slow growth</a> trajectory in India. As per data and analytics platform <a href="https://www.data.ai/en/insights/market-data/state-of-mobile-2022-bouyant-economy/">App Annie</a>, Netflix currently has the largest global footprint among video streaming services and is set to surpass 1 million downloads in over 60 countries in 2022. However, the story is different in India. The California-based global streaming platform Netflix is losing its users to homegrown platforms. As per App Annie’s State of Mobile 2022 report -- sorted by total downloads as of 2021, Disney+Hotstar is the most downloaded app, followed by MX Player and ZEE5. <keyword id="3194526" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="netflix-india" source="Orion">Netflix India</keyword> didn’t make it to its top 10 list. While Netflix doesn’t reveal its user base for the Indian market, <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/tech/technology/netflixs-lack-of-success-in-india-frustrating-cofounder-reed-hastings-says/articleshow/89044470.cms">media </a>reports indicate that it is between 4.3 million-4.5 million, which is a small fraction of its competitor Disney+Hotstar (close to 36 million) and Amazon Prime Video (over 17 million). Even Netflix’s co-chief executive (CEO) and cofounder Reed Hastings admitted that the team has been stumped by the lack of success in India. In the company’s post-results webcast for the October-December quarter of 2021, Hastings said, “The thing that frustrates us is why haven’t we been as successful in India. But we are definitely leaning in there.” Business Insider India has reached out to Netflix India for comments on the story, but the company has not responded till the time of filing this report. Before Hastings voiced his frustration publicly, Netflix India had <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/media/entertainment/netflix-india-cuts-prices-across-its-streaming-plans/articleshow/88267582.cms">slashed </a>its pricing for the mobile-only plan from ₹199/month to ₹149/month in December 2021 to expand its user base and cut through intense rivalry from Disney+Hotstar, Amazon Prime Video and other 60 over-the-top (OTT) platforms. With its choppy growth numbers and slow subscription rate, if Netflix were to restrict password sharing in a price-sensitive market like India, it could slide even further downhill. The streaming platform was launched in India in January 2016 and it is in the initial days of the launch, brand guru and founder of Harish Bijoor Consults Inc., Harish Bijoor, says that a brand or business must set the right practice, and changing it all of a sudden has aspects of ‘negative-peril biting into it.’ “Netflix is watched in India by more people who pay for it. And that is a reality that has its positives and negatives. Password-sharing is today the norm and accepted practice. Something Netflix did not curtail as a practice in its early days. India is a jugaad market. Password-sharing is today a practice that upset the apple cart of many a viewer and many a subscriber. It is going to have quite the effect that a Whatsapp could experience if it became a fee-paid service. Netflix's frustration is really of its own making,” explains Bijoor. As per consulting firm Ormax Media’s OTT sizing <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/advertising/media/article/india-has-353-million-ott-users-and-96-million-active-paid-subscriptions-which-translates-into-a-penetration-of-25-3-ormax-media-report/articleshow/85791184.cms">report </a>2021, India had a total of 353.2 million OTT users, out of which only 40.7 million i.e., 11.5 % were subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) users and a huge chunk of this market relies on password sharing. Gautam Jain, partner, Ormax Media says, “A large set of OTT users are SVOD Non-paying -- around 19.8 % (69.8 million), i.e., those who watch SVOD content but through password sharing or downloads. While the SVOD subscribers would have shown growth, this non-paying segment would have also grown given the price sensitivity amongst Indian audiences.” In Chile, Peru and Costa Rica, Netflix is charging an extra fee to users who share their accounts outside their household. Subscribers will be charged about $2.98 a month in Chile, $2.99 in Costa Rica and about $2.12 in Peru. As per research firm Trust Research Advisory’s (TRA) CEO, N Chandramouli, the Indian market is so price sensitive that fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) giants are scared to make even a 2 rupee change in their packets of biscuits, shampoo or noodles. Similarly, he says that Netflix’s price-slashing strategy from ₹199 to ₹149 has not attracted new customers. It has allowed its current subscribers to move to an even cheaper plan. And in India, Chandramouli says, pirates are always a step ahead than creators. So, if Netflix were to revise its pricing strategy for the third time in India, it could confuse users, leading to a rise in pirated content. To buy pirated content in Mumbai without having to download an app, all you have to do is walk down the Fort area and you would find 4-5 vendors chasing you — offering the latest releases on a CD or a pen drive, he adds. “There is a huge amount of piracy, which has now climbed onto the OTT bandwagon. Whether it is Telegram or Chinese torrent apps, pirated OTT content is shared there indiscriminately. From the very beginning, from softwares to movies, Indians don't find too much of [sic] qualms about piracy. On top of that, there are about 40 OTT platforms in India. So, the options in entertainment is proliferated [sic] and in this market, a slight price increase could have an impact. Netflix is attempting different strategies in order to attract new subscribers, but nothing has happened. People have downgraded their plans. So, Netflix will suffer a big backlash from existing users if at all it was to renew prices and stop password sharing,” he says. According to a <a href="https://www.thehindubusinessline.com/info-tech/as-digital-piracy-rises-amid-pandemic-original-content-creators-losing-money-ey/article34743362.ece">report </a>by Digital TV Research, the loss of revenue for OTT players on account of piracy in India is expected to hit $3.08 billion by 2022. OTT players are trying to woo consumers with exclusive Bollywood movies and regional content. Chandramouli pointed out that Netflix or Amazon Prime haven’t been able to get their acquisition strategy right in India yet. Citing a recent example, he said that both these streaming services rushed to get Amitabh Bachchan’s movie Sooryavanshi onto their platform for ₹100 crore, which is at least shown once a week on Set Max and other television channels. On television, a viewer can get a minimum of 900 channels in ₹300-350 per month bouquet. It is the only entertainment medium that drives close to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/advertising/media/article/how-india-is-cutting-the-cord-to-drive-an-ott-revolution/articleshow/90347924.cms">60%</a> of its revenue from a subscription-based model as compared to other forms of traditional media that are heavily dependent on advertisements. So, if Netflix charges a 10-15% extra for sharing passwords within an Indian household, which is ₹25 to 30, research firm Elara Capital’s senior vice president Karan Taurani also believes that it could have a negative impact. “Indian consumers are very value-centric and they don’t pay for one platform but a bundle of platforms. Netflix has done well in India after reducing its prices and offering a quantity of content. This two-fold strategy has led to the scaling of their subscriber base. If they ask for substituent fee from separate family members, it could work in a negative way because we haven’t been used to it. We pay for one TV set-up box and there are three-four watchers in every household,” says Taurani. When Netflix came to India, it priced its maiden premium plan at ₹500, which Tarurani says was 7X-8X higher than TV bundle plans and other OTT platforms. It was competing with OTT platforms and a huge TV-watching audience in India back then. This challenge led to Netflix’s slow growth and the streaming company has changed pricing as well as introduced a mobile-only plan in the country since then, slashing its price by 60%. “Netflix India revenue has grown 65% YoY in FY21 and it has a market share of almost 35% in India’s SVOD market; we believe Netflix has the first-mover advantage in India, as it was one of the first pay based OTT offerings in the country; it has been able to create a strong brand recall within Indian audience for premium content offerings behind a paywall and this will help it gain more market share as it penetrates deeper in India,” says Taurani. After the October-December quarterly results, Taurani says that Netflix is headed in the right direction. If Netflix now revises its password-sharing policy and price point, it could send the company back to square one.

Boston Consulting Group predicts that the OTT content market is at an inflection point in India and is likely to reach a market size of $5 billion by 2023. From just two OTT platform providers in 2012 to about 40 players at present, the OTT revolution has come a long way in India. Estimates from Phando Corp suggest that monthly active users (MAUs) for India’s OTT video sector have grown at a blistering rate of 300% since 2019 to reach 680 million in 2021, with rural and tier 2 &amp; 3 cities consumption reaching an 80% share. West Versus India Several factors including the widespread availability of broadband infrastructure, the ubiquity of mobile phones and other connected portable devices, and quest for personalised experiences have spurred the adoption of OTT consumption in the Western world. At the same time, technology investments, the emergence of new apps, features, and independent platforms for OTT content have also been growth drivers. Tech companies such as Amazon, Facebook, Apple, YouTube, connected device providers such as Samsung, Xiaomi, LG, and studios such Disney, MGM, Paramount, Sony are among the major corporations who have entered the OTT space, giving a plethora of programming choices to the consumers in the West. The growth in OTT platforms combined with the subsequent content boom has seen vernacular content from different regions gaining international popularity. South Korean dystopian drama broke all records by becoming the most watched content on Netflix by netizens around the world. As a result, all eyes are now firmly set on opportunities in emerging economies, specifically in the Indian subcontinent, with major players from the west entering the foray with attractive subscription offers, and diverse content catalogues. Some have chosen to collaborate with or acquire local brands to establish a firmer foothold in the region. For example, with the launch of Disney Plus in the US back in 2019, the streaming service promptly expanded to many other countries, including India. However, instead of getting a dedicated app for Indian users, the company acquired the Hotstar streaming platform and soon rebranded to Disney+ Hotstar. The coming together of Disney and Star TV Network (20th Century Fox) attracted tens of millions of subscribers in India and provided them access to a premium catalogue of content from Disney and Star TV. One of the challenges in India is the ability to monetize online content. Research suggests that the Advertising-led Video on Demand (AVOD) model is far more popular than Subscription-led video on demand (SVOD) models given the reluctance of viewers in India to pay for online content. While about 60% of total video viewing in India happens on YouTube, Netflix has 40 Mn monthly active users. Disney Plus Hotstar too has reached the critical mass with its freemium model, well-supported by relevant collaborations, such as sports (read cricket), which drives volume. Also, a KPMG study reveals that, unlike the West, only 10% of viewers access OTT platforms for watching original content. Rather, OTT is used primarily for the convenience of anytime and personal viewing of movies, music, sports or to catch-up with TV content. Driving OTT Growth in India As a country with a population of 1.23 billion, India is the next big market for OTT platforms. Some of the growth drivers for OTT players in India, based on the precedent from the West include: ● Investments in Content Video streaming services are expected to spend around ₹1,920 crore to create original content for India in 2021, driven in part by the sharp rise in audiences during the 2020 lockdown. The platforms will further increase spends, including on sports, to ₹30,000 crore, during 2021-25, according to the latest FICCI-EY media and entertainment industry report. Around 500 original titles are likely to be released in 2021 across platforms, as opposed to 385 titles in 2019 and 220 in 2020. The investment in original content makes sense given that viewers are learning to pay for the content they consume, especially original content. In 2020, 29 million subscribers paid for 53 million OTT video subscriptions (not counting subscriptions bundled along with data plans), a figure that is estimated to increase to 39 million subscribers for 71 million subscriptions in 2021. Netflix has more than 40 originals scheduled for 2021 and is expanding its slate by nearly three times compared to 2020. Amazon Prime Video has 50 local originals in various stages of development and 30 in various stages of production. Demand for original content will likely double by 2023 compared to 2019 levels. ● Content – the New Battlefield for Viewers Increasing number of consumers from tier-2 and tier-3 cities have spurred the production of regional content. Alt Balaji has seen a change after the pandemic. Before the pandemic, the top 8 cities in India contributed to 70% of their total audience; post-April 2020, 60% of the traffic is from other tier-2 and tier-3 cities. Old favourite shows are being re-aired on OTT platforms, while investments in new content production continue. Recently Amazon announced the acquisition of MGM, for $8.45 billion, giving it access to MGM’s library of 4000 film titles and 17,000 TV shows. We have witnessed the emergence of a wide variety of content including Indian content since India has a diverse market with over a dozen languages that are widely spoken across the country. OTT players are shifting their focus towards localisation of their platforms, to be able to connect with the Indian users, be it in terms of regional languages, geography and user experience etc. India already has about 40 OTT players and 10 music streaming apps in existence catering to various entertainment and media demands. This has opened the doors for OTT platforms to promote regional and hyperlocal content. In fact, a leading OTT player recently released 11 shows during the lockdown- all locally curated shows. The share of regional language consumption on OTT platforms is expected to cross 50% of total time spent by 2025, easing past Hindi at 45%. ● Government Regulations The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) has, in the past year, stressed the need for some form of regulation of OTT Platforms to streamline the sector. In this regard, the MIB recently notified the Information Technology (Guidelines for Intermediaries and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules 2021. The new rules require OTT platforms to set up a robust three-tier grievance redressal mechanism. The first level will comprise regulation by the OTT Platform itself through a grievance officer. The second level will be an institutional self-regulatory body formed by publishers of content and their associations. This self-regulatory body will comprise industry experts headed by a retired Supreme Court/ High Court judge /eminent personality in the relevant field. At the third level is an inter-department committee constituted by the MIB that will provide oversight and hear appeals for decisions taken at level two or if a complaint is referred to the inter-department committee by MIB. Regulation might help improve the quality of content in the future. ● The Future of OTT - New Applications and Content Innovations There is no doubt that the future of <keyword id="6357922" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="television" source="Orion">television</keyword> is OTT, and the industry is at a nascent stage. Content is the force that defines the direction of evolution in the industry. New applications such as learning, education and fitness are being explored. Pricewaterhouse Coopers reported that in 2018, more than 40% of new internet users in the world were children. Edtech platforms like Byjus and Unacademy use the OTT streaming approach for education. Similarly, possible applications for learning management in corporations are being explored. While fitness was never considered an activity that could be done remotely, the pandemic saw this notion change. According to a Bobble.AI report, besides video conferencing apps and websites, fitness applications such as Lose Weight, Cure.fit, recorded a 104.53% rise in daily active users. Everybody watches at different times during the day, hence, it doesn’t create any problems,” the seller told Business Insider India, on the condition of anonymity. They had invested over ₹3,000, and earned a profit of ₹4,000 in March itself. “Our plan is to expand our business and customer base and tie up with more OTT platforms. For this, we require an investment of ₹20,000,” the team member added. The fact that these youngsters found willing consumers, shows that Indians prefer multiple OTT subscriptions across languages and genres. The publication went on to stated that in February, Reliance came out on top in a fiercely competitive race to dominate India's burgeoning streaming market by striking a USD 8.5 billion merger deal with Disney's India business.
