At first look, you may get an iPhone-like look, with people even mistaking it for an iPhone during my usage, but this clears up immediately after looking at the pill-shaped camera module.<br /><br />The aluminium frame comes with a glossy finish and is slightly slippery. The aluminium frame also attracts dust fingerprint smudges easily. For these reasons, it might be a good idea to use the device with a case.<br /><br /><div type="image" title="Camera" msid="115487108" hostid="261" sizebytes="28950" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;The pill-shaped camera module&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div><br />It comes with a large pill-shaped camera module that houses the triple camera setup, a temperature sensor and the LED flash. The display is excellent, with the high refresh rate offering a good experience while gaming and watching content.<br /><br /><h2>Software and performance</h2>The Pixel 9 Pro XL runs on Android 14 out of the box and is promised to get seven years of Android updates and security patches. The software is the highlight of the Pixel lineup and the Pixel 9 Pro XL is no different. The device offers an Android experience as imagined by Google, the operating system maker.<br /><br />As expected, the device comes loaded with AI features in the form of Gemini. To enable users to make the most out of the AI features, Google is offering a one-year premium subscription to Pixel 9 Pro XL users, giving them access to Gemini Advanced, 2TB of Google Drive storage and more.<br /><br />The device comes pre-installed with Pixel Studio, a new GenAI image generation app from Google, allowing users to generate images easily on the go.<br /><br />You also get access to Gemini Live, a live-chat version of Gemini, which allows for voice-enabled interactions.<br /><br />In what might excite most photography enthusiasts like myself, the device also comes with a more powerful Magic Editor, giving access to a ton of new tools.<br /><br />Talking about AI and photography, the new Add Me feature is excellent, especially for those who often end up being the ones to take group pictures and regret not being in them. The new Add Me feature allows you to take a group picture and then hand your phone to your friend and then join the group for another picture, then using AI to blend them into one image to make the perfect group picture.<br /><br />I used this feature during one of my trips and found it to be quite useful. Once you get the hang of it and remember to stand in the correct place, it works quite well.<br /><br />The Pixel 9 Pro XL is powered by the Google Tensor G4 chipset built on Samsung’s 4nm process. It comes with 16GB of RAM and offers up to 512GB of internal storage.<br /><br />If you are hoping for a drastic performance improvement compared to the predecessor, you might be disappointed. It offers an incremental improvement in performance but can easily handle everything that you throw at it.<br /><br />One area the chipset and the device has improved a lot over the Pixel 8 Pro is thermal management and proper connectivity. These were some of my biggest issues with the last-gen devices and Google has made a significant improvement in this aspect.<br /><br />The Pixel 9 Pro XL is powered by a 5,060mAh battery with 37W wired and 23W wireless charging support. The images turned out to be sharp and clear, with adequate details and minimal noise.<br /><br />On the front, the Pixel 9 Pro XL features a 42MP selfie camera. The front camera can easily capture good selfies in normal lighting and low light conditions.<br /><br /><h2>Verdict</h2>The Pixel 9 Pro XL is the best device in the current Pixel lineup and one of the best Android smartphones out there. The device offers an excellent user experience, a premium design and good cameras. It offers good performance and ample storage, ticking off a lot of the boxes.<br /><br />At the same time, the Pixel 9 Pro XL commands a premium price and while enthusiasts may like the stock Android experience, the lack of customisation may not be everyone’s cup of tea. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Discord is launching Video Quests, its second ad format, as it looks to grow its ads business.</li><li>Video Quests reward viewers with in-game items or profile enhancements for watching ads.</li></ul><p>The gaming-focused chat app Discord is readying the launch of its second ad format, part of a plan to steadily grow its ads business ahead of a potential initial public offering.</p><p>Video Quests will reward viewers for watching a video ad, such as with an in-game item, a skin for a character in that game, or a way to augment how their profile appears on Discord.</p><p>The ads will initially appear in the lower-left area of the app on desktop, via mobile banners, and in the Quests home page.</p><p>Discord first rolled out ads earlier this year when it introduced Quests — now known as Game Quests — which let games developers and publishers offer users in-game rewards if they streamed their gameplay from a specific game with friends.</p><p>Until then, Discord had <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/a-social-network-without-ads-discord-defies-convention-11615199401">eschewed advertising</a> over concerns it would be too intrusive and that users wouldn't want to share their data with marketers.</p><p>That's why the company is taking a deliberately slow-and-steady approach to advertising. Both Quests formats are only currently available to games developers and publishers, though Peter Sellis, Discord's SVP of product, said the company would be open to having conversations with gaming-adjacent brands over time.</p><p>Activision Blizzard's World of Warcraft, Epic Games' Fortnite, and HoYoverse's Genshin Impact have run Quests on Discord this year.</p><p>"Discord is a place where you play games with your friends, so game-related ads feel really good," Sellis told Business Insider in an interview. "We have to be really careful with how we use that kind of superpower."</p><p>For now, Quests can only be bought directly from the Discord sales team — there's no self-service facility or integrations with third-party ad-buying platforms.</p><div type="image" title="A Discord Game Quest ad." height="967" width="1440" msid="113915662" hostid="261" sizebytes="58544"></div><p>Advertisers can target their campaigns by age, geography, and a user's gameplay history. Sellis said the cost of an overall campaign tends to be large but that they are "competitively priced" versus other platforms such as Netflix that launched their ad businesses with sky-high CPMs — the cost-per-mille, or the cost to reach 1,000 impressions — only to later bring them down.</p><p>"Those other platforms gave gone to market with very premium CPMs, sometimes $50-plus in some cases; at Discord we're looking at something that's half of that or even less," Sellis said. (<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/snap-snapchat-layoffs-peter-sellis-discord-2022-9">Sellis previously worked</a> on business products at Snap, which also came out of the gate with <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/snapchat-discover-ad-rates-2015-3">large CPMs</a> when it first offered ads on Snapchat.)</p><p>He added that the design of Quests lends itself to users sharing content with their friends, which boosts the overall impressions a campaign is likely to generate.</p><h2 id="9001a00a-7836-4fd0-acb8-334ba4e774a6">Discord ad revenue could one day become 'on par' with its subscription business</h2><p>Growing Discord's advertising revenue will be crucial as the nearly 10-year-old company looks to turn a profit and plot a path towards a potential IPO.</p><p>Discord's chief executive, Jason Citron, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-03-07/discord-to-offer-rewards-for-gamers-as-app-seeks-profit-in-2024">told Bloomberg</a> in March that "at some point, we'd probably go public." The company has raised around $1 billion in investment to date, according to PitchBook.</p><p>Right now, the company generates the vast majority of its revenue from its Nitro subscription service, where users pay either $2.99 or $9.99 a month to unlock benefits like high-definition streaming, custom emojis, and the ability to upload larger files. Otherwise, Discord is free to use. It also makes money by taking a 10% commission from developers who sell their games on Discord and when users pay to boost their communities — known as servers — to a bigger audience.</p><div type="image" title="Peter Sellis, Discord svp of product, headshot" height="3285" width="4380" msid="113915657" hostid="261" sizebytes="330508"></div><p>The company is expected to generate around $600 million in annual revenue this year, Bloomberg reported in March.</p><p>"I do foresee that advertising could be a very significant contributor to our business, on par with our subscription business, long-term," Sellis said.</p><p>Discord is currently growing its in-house advertising ranks. It recently hired Adam Bauer, formerly of FaZe Clan, as its <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://digiday.com/marketing/why-discord-is-making-key-hires-to-build-out-its-advertising-business/">VP of sales,</a> and it lists seven open ad sales roles on its careers site.</p><p>But Discord is a late entrant in a crowded market. While Discord has grown to around 200 million monthly active users, competitors like Meta and Google have billions — as well as precision-targeting, measurement, and brand safety features that Discord doesn't yet offer. A laser focus on the gaming category could also limit its potential pool of advertisers.</p><p>Hon-Ming Gianotti, strategic industries lead for games at the marketing agency Monks, said that "intimacy" is one of the platform's unique selling points that Discord should attempt to pitch to the advertising community.</p><p>"When you're communicating directly to a group of friends about specific labeled topics or a bunch of people with similar interests to you, you're in a very different type of mindset — you're seeking to actually socialize and communicating with people about real things rather than viewing a thing and reacting in the comments," Gianotti said.</p><p>For advertisers, he added, "The benefit of being a filter or layer or entity that contributes to that intimate experience is exciting."</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="19897536" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="netflix" source="keywords">Netflix</keyword>'s stock recently hit an all-time high, but can the growth keep going?</li><li>The US and Canada drive 70% of Netflix's revenue growth and are crucial for its future ad expansion.</li></ul>By now, it's become a common refrain in Hollywood: Netflix has <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/netflix-earnings-winning-streaming-wars-not-even-close-2024-1">won the streaming wars</a>. It has a giant subscriber base and a towering lead over its rivals (most of which are still struggling to figure out a profitable streaming model), and its stock price recently hit an <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/netflix-stock-historic-high-chart-streaming-2024-9">all-time high</a>.<br /><br />Still, that gargantuan comeback — it hit $725 a share earlier this month after falling below $180 in summer 2022 following a rare subscriber loss — has some investors asking if the company is worth its high price tag. After all, Netflix still <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/youtube-not-netflix-is-big-threat-to-hollywood-analysis-2024-2">trails YouTube in terms of TV watch time</a>, and its share of the total TV viewing, per Nielsen, hasn't materially changed over the past year. <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-beating-netflix-upfront-battle-for-tv-sports-dollars-2024-7">Amazon threw a wrench into Netflix's advertising ambitions</a> by <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-prime-video-preview-shake-up-tv-ad-marketplace-2024-1">steamrolling into the market</a> earlier this year.<br /><br />Netflix has already made clear to investors that weaker subscriber growth may be ahead as its password-sharing crackdown benefits taper off, writing in its <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://s22.q4cdn.com/959853165/files/doc_financials/2024/q2/FINAL-Q2-24-Shareholder-Letter.pdf">Q2 shareholder letter</a>: "We expect paid net additions to be lower than Q3'23, which had the first full quarter impact from paid sharing."<br /><br />While some analysts think Netflix could grow revenue by as much as 15% in 2025, others are more tepid. Barclays even gave the stock a rare downgrade on October 7, writing that it would be harder for Netflix to grow revenue over time and that every growth lever comes with trade-offs.<br /><br />Ahead of Netflix's Q3 earnings report on October 17, here are the top questions on Wall Street's mind about how Netflix can keep its growth going and live up to its sky-high valuation.<br /><br /><h2><strong>Where will future revenue come from?</strong></h2>For all of Netflix's expansion overseas, the US and Canada remain by far its biggest growth engine, accounting for 70% of revenue growth from 2019 to 2023, Barclays analysts wrote this month.<br /><br />How much growth is left?<br /><br />The benefits of Netflix's password-sharing crackdown will fade over time, which could weigh down subscriber growth.<br /><br />Netflix is also counting on the US and Canada to drive advertising growth, but Barclays argued that this could come with trade-offs in either lower revenue (if more people <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ads-are-coming-to-netflix-heres-everything-you-need-to-know">choose its ad tier</a>) or lower subscriber growth (if Netflix raises prices to compensate for that).<br /><br /><h2><strong>How is advertising going?</strong></h2>With subscriber growth potential limited in the US because Netflix is already quite saturated in the market, Netflix needs to ramp up ad revenue. This is a point that analysts have been <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/netflix-earnings-preview-questions-streaming-wars-enter-new-phase-2024-1">making for a while</a>, and Netflix has made progress, announcing a 150% increase in ad commitments at <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/star-of-this-years-tv-upfronts-retailers-2024-4">this year's TV upfronts</a> (off a small base). It's also opening up advertising sales through tech partnerships, and deals to broadcast live events like the Tyson-Paul fight, two NFL Christmas Day games, and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-netflix-pro-wrestling-wwe-deal-makes-sense-2024-1">WWE fights</a> — all things that are catnip to advertisers.<br /><br />Netflix execs have said that they expect advertising to eventually account for at least <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/netflix-could-add-free-streaming-service-fast-build-ads-business-2023-1">10% of the company's revenue</a>. But the ad tier base is still relatively small (15 million in the US and Canada, LightShed Partners estimated). It needs a lot more to become a meaningful contributor to revenue, though <em>how</em> much is unclear.<br /><br />While Netflix's ad tier growth is steadily adding inventory, those tech deals will take a couple of years to ramp up. The <keyword id="19899797" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="wwe" source="keywords">WWE</keyword> partnership won't start until 2025. And as part of its effort to attract advertisers, Netflix is spending to acquire more ad-friendly content like live sports (as well as to build a video gaming library), which could increase its content costs and cut into its margins.<br /><br />Meanwhile, <keyword id="19904608" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="amazon" source="keywords">Amazon</keyword> came on strong when it rolled out ads by default across Prime Video this year, putting downward pressure on Netflix's and other streamers' ad rates.<br /><br />Barclays wrote that forcing people to watch more ads could also have a downside for Netflix: "It's tough to see how this doesn't come with its own engagement trade-offs."<br /><br /><h2><strong>Are price increases coming?</strong></h2>One way Netflix can keep growing revenue if subscriber and advertiser growth are limited is to raise prices for consumers. There's broad consensus among Wall Street analysts that Netflix has room to do so, given its relative value in the market and price increases by its peers.<br /><br /><keyword id="19941660" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="citibank" source="keywords">Citibank</keyword> analysts think Netflix could raise US prices by 12%. But a US price increase would only do so much for Netflix, given its ability to raise prices overseas is limited, Citibank wrote.<br /><br />Netflix last raised prices in October 2023, on its premium and basic tiers, but not its ad-supported or standard plans.<br /><br />Netflix has the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/netflix-wins-streaming-wars-this-chart-shows-why-2024-1">lowest cancellation rate</a>, per research from the data firm Antenna, and the lowest-priced ad tier of the streamers, so it has a lot of credit with subscribers on this front.<br /><br />So, the question is more <em>when</em> prices will go up — not <em>if</em>.<br /><br />Or, as <keyword id="23618376" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="newstreet" source="keywords">NewStreet</keyword> analysts wrote, is it possible Netflix could go in the opposite direction, at least in some markets? The streamer could decrease prices in small markets to build penetration or launch a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/netflix-could-add-free-streaming-service-fast-build-ads-business-2023-1">free, fully ad-supported tier</a> in select markets.<br /><br /><h2><strong>What's happening with games?</strong></h2>Netflix has been building out a video game library since 2021 but has shared little data on its progress.<br /><br />Meanwhile, questions persist inside and outside the company about what the strategy around games is and if they're <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/netflix-games-mike-verdu-leaving-strategy-2024-6">worth the investment</a>.<br /><br />The company recently installed a new gaming leader from Epic Games, who has already <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/netflix-shakes-up-gaming-division-new-epic-hire-layoffs-2024-10">begun shaking things up</a>.<br /><br />With doubts about where Netflix's next growth act could come from, don't be surprised if questions grow louder about the games business, such as how efforts to promote games on the home screen have paid off and how Netflix might be looking to monetize them.<br /><br /><h2><strong>What's next?</strong></h2>For all the talk of Netflix's dominance, the overarching question looming for the company is how it moves from what's long been a single business model — selling subscriptions — to multiple business lines. Beyond advertising and games, the company also has been putting on events and selling merch tied to its popular shows like <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bridgerton-merch-brand-collaborations-netflix-marketing-regency-trends-2024-6">"Bridgerton"</a> — areas that they say are about building fandom and retaining subscribers.<br /><br />"But those are business lines at <keyword id="19899232" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="disney" source="keywords">Disney</keyword>," <keyword id="23618375" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="dan-salmon" source="keywords">Dan Salmon</keyword> of NewStreet said in an interview. "If you think about the next five, 10 years, that's the question: Do they build all the ancillary businesses like Disney has to leverage their IP?"<br /><br />It's worth noting that Netflix recently hired Lowell Singer, a longtime investor relations exec from none other than Disney.<br /><br />There's also an inconvenient truth looming for Netflix.<br /><br />Despite Netflix ticking up in Piper Sandler's latest teen survey, kids spend more time <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/disney-kid-problem-cable-tv-decline-disney-channel-watching-youtube-2024-7">watching short video clips</a> on mobile screens versus TV shows and movies that are Netflix's bread and butter.<br /><br />Netflix will have to evolve to meet that generation as they grow into adulthood and when — or if — they become subscribers on their own.<br /><br />But those are questions that won't be solved in the next quarter.<br /><br /><em>October 18, 2024 — This story was updated to clarify when Netflix most recently raised prices.
