As in previous years, spending on iOS games was significantly higher than the Google Play total and was indeed higher than all Android-based stores put together last year.<br />
<br /> The rise of China and <keyword id="6355311" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Japan">Japan</keyword> as global mobile gaming powerhouses was evident in 2016.<br /> The top grossing iOS game globally last year was Fantasy Westward <keyword id="6374782" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="journey">Journey</keyword>, published by China's <keyword id="685839" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="NetEase">NetEase</keyword>. Two the most notable takeaways from this survey are that:<br />

• Approximately 24 million Americans played an AR game in September 2016, and 56% of this gamer base was under 25 years of age (primarily reflecting Pokémon GO's popularity among children and young adults)<br />

• About 4.5 million Americans played a VR title on their smartphone last September, and these gamer were fairly hardcore (46% played mobile games for &gt;15 hours a week, 56% were male, and the group's average consumer spend on mobile games was 42% above the total mobile/handheld gamer average spend in 3Q 2016)<br />
<br />
The demographics of mobile VR gamers nonetheless point to rapid revenue growth moving forward, and the fact that a large share of mobile VR gamers also enjoy eSports content implies that competitive multiplayer gaming will emerge as an important mobile VR market driver – and help put some distance between the leading suppliers and the competition.

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="11962372" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="epic-games" source="Orion">Epic Games</keyword> will shut down its <keyword id="11892748" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="china" source="Orion">China</keyword> version of <keyword id="11962371" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="fortnite" source="Orion">Fortnite</keyword> on November 15.</li><li>Fortnite in China was only ever in the beta-testing stage and has been available since 2018.</li></ul><p>Game developer <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-is-epic-games">Epic Games</a> is shutting down the Chinese version of its wildly popular <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fortnite-most-influential-video-game-decade-2019-12">Fortnite</a>.</p><p>The company announced the decision in a post on its <a href="https://fn.qq.com/webplat/info/news_version3/10021/34544/34546/m22150/202110/903484.shtml">website</a> on Sunday. A spokesperson for Epic Games shared a translation of the post with Insider, which said Epic ended new user registrations in China on November 1 and will fully shut down its servers there on November 15.</p><p>The Chinese version of Fortnite, called Fortress Night, was never technically a full version of the game and the company referred to it as a "beta test" in its shutdown announcement.</p><p>Epic Games' spokesperson told Insider the beta test has existed in China since 2018. <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2021/11/02/fortnite-to-shut-down-in-china-amid-video-game-crackdown.html">CNBC</a> reported the beta version lacked features such as in-app purchases.</p><p>The company did not give a reason for why it was shutting down the game, and a spokesperson declined to comment when asked by Insider. </p><p>Epic Games' decision to withdraw Fortnite from China comes after the Chinese government began to bring in strict new laws around <keyword id="6357332" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="gaming" source="Orion">gaming</keyword>. Beijing introduced a law in August mandating that <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-cuts-video-game-time-for-kids-3-hours-weekly-2021-8">children under 18 can only have three hours of gaming per week</a>.</p><p>Shares in major Chinese gaming companies <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tencent-netease-stock-price-chinese-video-games-restrictions-approvals-china-2021-9">Tencent and NetEase</a> fell in September following a report from the <a href="https://www.scmp.com/tech/big-tech/article/3148128/china-said-suspend-approval-new-online-games-heating-beijings">South China Morning Post</a> that government officials were slowing approvals of new online video games.</p><p>Tencent <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-government-epic-games-inquiry-tencent-china-2020-9">acquired a 40% stake in Epic Games</a> in <a href="https://techcrunch.com/2012/06/19/tencent-epic/">2012</a>.</p>

<ul><li>India has banned 118 Chinese apps as border tension with China continue to flare up.</li><li>The third iteration of India's ban on Chinese mobile apps includes the Tencent's PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds (PUBG).</li><li>It also banned other games by the Chinese developer including Ludo World, Arena of Valor and Chess Rush. </li></ul>As border tensions between India and China escalate, India’s Ministry of Information and Technology (MeitY) has issued a another list banning 118 Chinese mobile apps from the Indian market. This time it cover the Chinese game developing mammoth Tencent’s PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG), Ludo World, Arena of Valor and Chess Rush. <br /><br />This is the third time that the Indian government has issued a list that targets mobile apps made by Chinese companies. The first list came out on June 29 after the Galwan Valley skirmish, which left 20 Indian soldier dead and an undisclosed number of casualties on the Chinese side. Shares of rival online retailer <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/jd-stock">JD.com</a> soared 8% to $66.94, its highest since March 4, and <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/bidu-stock">Baidu</a> rose 1.5%. </p><p>The gains helped push the S&amp;P/BNY Mellon China ADR Index toward a third straight advance. </p><p>China's National Press and Publication Administration, or NPAA, on Tuesday gave the green light to 60 online games, the largest approval of titles for the country's $45 billion market for online entertainment since July 2021, <a href="https://www.scmp.com/tech/big-tech/article/3180779/chinas-regulators-exclude-tencent-netease-they-approve-60-online-game">according to the South China Morning Post</a>. </p><p>The approval suggested Beijing is continuing to loosen its regulatory grip on the broader tech sector, a crackdown that's wiped out billions of dollars in market valuation and has weighed on the world's second-largest economy. </p><p>The SCMP reported the NPAA didn't approve any titles from <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/ntes-stock">NetEase.</a> The company's Nasdaq-listed stock, however, advanced on Wednesday, rising 3% during the session. </p><p>"The noise around Chinese tech continues to grow. There are increasing hopes that the regulatory onslaught is ending and instead the focus will shift to technology as an engine for economic growth," Huw Roberts, head of analytics at Quant Insight, in a note Tuesday about whether investors are seeing a turning point following the slide in technology stocks.  </p><p>The Wall Street Journal on Monday reported that Chinese authorities were <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/didi-stock-price-soars-china-end-cybersecurity-probe-regulators-crackdown-2022-6">ending a cybersecurity investigation of the ride-hailing app Didi</a>. Didi shares climbed 12% on Wednesday. </p><p><a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/alibaba-stock-price-chinese-tech-stocks-regulation-economy-growth-stimulus-2022-4">In April</a>, the Chinese government reportedly said it would introduce measures to support the tech sector and pledged further economic stimulus measures as the country faces the slowest growth in three decades, at 5.5%.</p><p>"Given how brutal the sell-off has been since November 2020 when Beijing first suspended <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-happened-ant-group-ipo-jack-ma-alipay-2020-11">Ant's IPO</a>, bottom-up analysis suggests valuations are cheap and there's increased chat about a catch-up trade," Roberts wrote.</p>

<p>The fragmented app ecosystem in China poses a major challenge for Western gaming developers, but the revenue opportunity is becoming simply too big to ignore. Gaming developers face an uphill battle in China, the #1 mobile gaming market globally

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The stabbing of a Japanese mother and her son went viral in China after a local woman died protecting them.</li><li>Her death ignited a clash between praise for the 55-year-old and a resurgence in anti-Japan posts.</li></ul><p>It's no secret that people on Chinese social media dislike Japan.</p><p>The list of perceived grievances keeps growing, from the Rape of Nanking in World War II to fears of seafood in the Pacific Ocean being tainted by <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/japan-release-fukushima-nuclear-disaster-radioactive-wastewater-treated-safe-2023-8">radioactive water from the Fukushima disaster.</a></p><p>That rhetoric was stoked again on June 24 when a knife-wielding man in Suzhou attacked a Japanese woman and her son at a school bus stop, injuring the pair.</p><p>But it was the third victim who seized the country's attention. School bus attendant Hu Youping, a 55-year-old Chinese woman, rushed to protect the two foreigners, suffering stab wounds herself.</p><p>She died later while receiving medical care, <a target="_blank" href="https://gonganju.suzhou.gov.cn/gaj/gggs/202406/b10b5b52abf944bbbe5da0f48f49ab2b.shtml">police said</a>. They identified the suspect as an unemployed 52-year-old man with the surname Zhou, saying he'd only recently arrived in the city.</p><p>A whirlwind of emotion and debate ensued on social media. Hu was lauded as a hero — with some clamoring for the bus stop to be named after her — while anti-Japan hate speech swelled in posts and comments implying the attack was warranted.</p><p>As the two narratives intertwined, Chinese social media companies intervened in lockstep. It was clear the extremism had gone too far.</p><p>Tech giant Tencent <a target="_blank" href="https://new.qq.com/rain/a/20240629A07Y1D00">published a statement</a> on Saturday condemning the hate speech and said it would crack down on posts related to the Suzhou stabbing that "provoke extreme nationalism." Tencent runs WeChat, a super app that performs functions similar to WhatsApp and Facebook.</p><p>NetEase, a major gaming company, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.163.com/dy/article/J5SC406S051487S2.html">published a similar announcement</a>, saying it observed posts calling for "resisting Japan and exterminating traitors" and accusing Hu of being a Japanese spy.</p><p><a target="_blank" href="https://www.toutiao.com/w/1803214247310336/">Douyin</a> and <a target="_blank" href="https://weibo.com/1934183965/OkPR1lEPA">Weibo</a>, China's versions of TikTok and Twitter, publicly slammed accounts that they said "promote extreme xenophobia" and "cheered for criminal behavior in the name of patriotism."</p><p>The platforms said they took down thousands of posts and removed several dozen accounts.</p><h2 id="be0339db-22c4-48a0-82ae-a6e8a2800701">China's uneasy balance with Japan</h2><p>It's a rare rebuke of nationalism on these platforms, a hotbed for inflammatory posts like the 2022 calls to shoot down then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's plane when she visited Taiwan.</p><p>Though China's social media is heavily moderated, anti-Japanese rhetoric has been one of several popular nationalistic sentiments allowed to flourish in recent years.</p><p>As of Wednesday, the main hashtag for posts about the Japanese victims of the June knife attack was censored. However, discussion of Hu's death and her <a target="_blank" href="https://gonganju.suzhou.gov.cn/gaj/gggs/202406/b10b5b52abf944bbbe5da0f48f49ab2b.shtml">posthumous recognition for bravery</a> are still allowed.</p><p>In recognition of Hu's actions, Japan's embassy in China <a target="_blank" href="https://weibo.com/1938487875/Ol3qFrTBd">flew its national flag at half-mast.</a></p><p>It's unclear if China's central government was directly involved in the crackdown. But social media firms in the country react sensitively to what the state deems acceptable, often simultaneously issuing announcements about undesirable posts.</p><p>China's Cyberspace Administration tasks social media platforms with self-regulating content and, on June 14, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cac.gov.cn/2024-06/14/c_1720043894161555.htm">published a set of rules </a>detailing how internet providers should censor violent content.</p><p>The anti-Japanese rhetoric also comes at an inconvenient time for Chinese officials hoping to bring in more business from Tokyo as the local economy struggles.</p><p>Suzhou, in eastern China's Jiangsu province, is one of the country's largest hubs for Japanese investment, with <a target="_blank" href="https://regional.chinadaily.com.cn/SuzhouNewDistrict/2022-07/27/c_792868.htm">thousands of Japanese firms</a> in the city.</p><p>On Tuesday, <a target="_blank" href="https://news.ifeng.com/c/8asx18ggwqv">Chinese state media</a> reported that Vice Premier He Lifeng had met with a trade delegation from Japan, saying his country welcomed Japanese companies and hoped they would expand.</p><p>Hu's death hung over the meeting, with officials on both sides pausing for a moment to honor her passing, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.scmp.com/economy/china-economy/article/3268873/chinese-official-calls-japanese-investment-reaffirming-vow-widen-market-access">The South China Morning Post reported.</a></p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Tech leaders are increasingly using the vague term "<keyword id="11121339" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="metaverse" source="Orion">metaverse</keyword>" in earnings calls with investors. </li><li>Many are following the lead of Meta, who announced it would be focusing on building the metaverse.</li></ul><p>The "metaverse" has become a hot topic for executives, analysts, and investors alike, being mentioned in the earnings calls of more than 15 companies in the past few months alone. </p><p>As the tech world grapples with what the metaverse will actually look like, several executives have started weaving mentions of it into discussion with investors. However, their remarks indicate they are still fairly unsure of what specifically the metaverse is and how it functions. </p><p>While <keyword id="11892960" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="facebook" source="Orion">Facebook</keyword>'s recent rebranding to Meta helped increase awareness of the metaverse and propelled it to a topic of global conversation, even CEO Mark Zuckerberg only has a vague notion of the definition of the metaverse. </p><p>"The best way to understand the metaverse is to experience it yourself, but it's a little tough because it doesn't fully exist yet," Zuckerberg said at a conference last month. </p><p>Some companies are divided on whether it represents a real virtual space or if it's just a concept, while others are unsure if a metaverse will ever actually exist and are weary of the nebulous technology. </p><p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/morgan-stanley-is-worried-about-facebook-pivot-to-the-metaverse-2021-11">Analysts at Morgan Stanley</a> said the metaverse could represent an $8 trillion opportunity, but it would be a challenge to get people interested in using it. Augmented reality and artificial intelligence experts also told Insider that a metaverse could <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/facebook-meta-metaverse-splinter-reality-more-2021-11">drastically amplify society's political polarization</a>.</p><p>Still, companies are willing to make large investments in the metaverse, even if they don't fully understand it yet. The space is expected to be worth $82 billion by 2025, <a href="https://www.theinformation.com/articles/what-will-metaverse-be-worth-in-2025-our-guess-is-82-billion#:~:text=Our%20conclusion%20is%20that%20by,and%20Roblox%2C%20which%20already%20offer">according to The Information</a>, and companies plan to expand their goods and services into the experimental virtual space.</p><p>Here's what some company executives are saying about the metaverse, and what they intend to do with it.</p><h3>Agora Inc.</h3><p>The real-time video platform just announced a network product that would "accelerate any kind of data, not just video or audio, and for any application, whether it's gaming, e-commerce, collaboration, or metaverse," according to CEO Tony Zhao.</p><p>"Recently, we have seen an accelerating trend of real-time engagement in extended reality environment, creating the infrastructure of metaverse," Zhao said in a November call with investors. "Our plan is to further enhance our capabilities in these areas and become an instrumental infrastructure provider for metaverse."</p><h3>Bilibili</h3><p>"Metaverse is a concept, it's not a product," Bilibili CEO Rui Chen said in a call with investors on Wednesday, suggesting elements of the metaverse have existed for a long time, but companies are only now jumping onboard.</p><p>"I think that if someone hears the concept of metaverse and decided to get into this business, probably would be a little bit too late," Chen said. "When we talk about metaverse, we think this is not something that can be done by a singular company. Zuckerberg previously said <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-is-metaverse-facebook-mark-zuckerberg-roblox-animal-crossing-2021-8">Meta's first venture into the metaverse</a> would be focused on building a virtual reality workspace, where employees could interact in virtual meetings.</p><p> "You can think about the metaverse as an embodied internet, where instead of just viewing content — you are in it," Zuckerberg <a href="https://www.theverge.com/22588022/mark-zuckerberg-facebook-ceo-metaverse-interview">told The Verge.</a></p><h3>Match Group</h3><p>Match Group CEO Sharmistha Dubey said in an earnings call in November she imagines using metaverse features for the company's dating apps, like "a piano bar where people's digital selves are gathering around, but they're actually playing their pianos at home and jamming with others."</p><p>"It is metaverse experiences coming to life in a way that is transformative to how people meet and get to know each other on a dating or social discovery platform and is much more akin to how people interact in the real world," Dubey said. </p><h3><div type="image" title="Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, seated with open hands." height="3892" width="5190" msid="87837509" hostid="261"></div></h3><h3>Microsoft</h3><p>Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella touted the company's new Azure service in its earnings call in July to help decentralize computing, with companies like Campbell Soup, L'Oréal, and SAP migrating to its service.</p><p>"As the digital and physical worlds converge, we are leading in a new layer of the infrastructure stack, the 'enterprise metaverse," Nadella said.</p><h3>NetEase</h3><p>The Chinese tech entertainment company said the company is "technologically ready" for a move into the metaverse space.</p><p>"The metaverse is indeed the new buzzword everywhere today. But then, on the other hand, I think nobody has actually had firsthand experience in what it is," Margaret Shi, NetEase head of investor relations, said on a November earnings call.</p><h3><div type="image" title="Roblox CEO David Baszucki" height="1185" width="1580" msid="87837510" hostid="261"></div></h3><h3>Roblox</h3><p>Roblox has been frequently cited as an example of a potential metaverse model. Roblox CEO David Baszucki said in an earnings call in June that the company is driven to "really participating in inventing and shepherding in the metaverse in an innovative way."</p><p>"When we think about the metaverse and what Roblox is, we do think of it as a utility," Baszucki said.</p><p>The company aims to connect more than 1 billion people in the metaverse, according to Chief Product Officer Manuel Bronstein. The metaverse will also house experiences from ad agencies, according to Chief Business Officer Craig Donato.</p><h3>Unity Software</h3><p>The video game software company recently acquired Weta Digital, which it said will help with entry into the metaverse space, especially with a creator-focused approach. In an effort to populate the metaverse, the company has started building thousands of digital assets, such as virtual collectibles.</p><p>"That's going to really help us extract and help build the metaverse around the notion the world's a better place with more creators in it," CEO John Riccitiello said on an earnings call in November. "This really puts under our platform something that is, at least from an artist perspective, truly magic and they're the largest tappable audience we have in our universe."</p><h3>Vonage Holdings</h3><p>The cloud communications provider said it's focusing on cloud-based technology to increase user engagement in preparation for something bigger, hinting at use in a metaverse context. </p><p>Vonage Holdings CEO Rory Read said on an earnings call in November that the company expects to see a more fleshed out version of the metaverse in the next five to ten years.</p><p>"We believe this is only going to accelerate as this 360-degree kind of engagement in the metaverse expands and explodes," Read said.</p><h3><div type="image" title="Bob Chapek" height="2348" width="3130" msid="87837511" hostid="261"></div></h3><h3>The Walt Disney Company</h3><p>CEO Bob Chapek said he is confident in Disney's ability to capitalize on the metaverse with its broad properties, citing the company's history with adopting technologies, like synchronized audio and computer animation.</p><p>"Suffice it to say, our efforts to date are merely a prologue to a time when we'll be able to connect the physical and digital worlds even more closely, allowing for storytelling without boundaries in our own Disney metaverse," Chapek said in a November call, suggesting the company creates its own metaverse.</p><h3>Warner Music Group</h3><p>Warner Music Group discussed the potential for content creation and distribution for their music on large-scale metaverse platforms, like Roblox and Fortnite, in its earnings call in November.</p><p>"When you begin to look at the global reach, the number of people that spend meaningful amounts of time in these new worlds, I think it provides a universe of opportunity," CEO Stephen Cooper said.</p>
