With over a billion people in the country, it's always been difficult to gauge the public's mood in <keyword id="3658" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword>, as far as elections are concerned. Take the 2014 elections for instance. While everyone had an inkling that the BJP would take the cake, no one expected the sweeping victory the party pulled off.<br /><br />But what if you could marry voting with one of the fastest growing sectors in the country? Would that help gauge the public's reactions better?<br /><br />An app called Neta aims to do just that. Created by Pratham Mittal, a Wharton alumnus, the app lets you "review" politicians, just like you do Uber drivers. The idea is to create a ‘Zomato of politicians’. Mittal argues that ratings on apps like Zomato and Yelp are major drivers for service quality in a restaurant, just like Uber drivers care about the rating you give to them. So, why shouldn't politicians?<br /><br />Mittal and his team have created a database of constituencies in the country, including the politicians who are competing from these places.<br /><br />After signing up, users can find their constituency using the pin code and cast a vote for a <em>neta</em> (Hindi for politician). While this is not an official vote, it helps gauge what users in a particular area think of their leaders. The votes can be changed at will, which means if a politician isn't performing after an election, the public can change their vote.<br /><br />

The votes are displayed in the form of a leaderboard, that ranks politicians based on the votes they receive. <br /><br />There's also a separate area for discussions and polls. The app allows users to run polls and add issues in their area. That gets even more feedback from users, providing better insight into what's happening on the ground.<br /><br />In the 2014 elections, 540 million Indians voted in the central elections. That was 66.4% of the electorate, up 8.4% from the 58% turnout in the 2009 elections. Yet, India doesn't have an easy method to gauge the public's mood.<br /><br />Once the app is launched across the country, Mittal says he can take the data to political parties and sell it to them. His app has 100,000 downloads on the Play Store right now, most of which were acquired during the recent Karnataka elections. It can also be accessed through the web, while Mittal's team also sends mass WhatsApp messages to people and makes IVR-driven calls to get votes from users. In fact, Mittal claims that through the data in his app, he was able to predict the eventually hung assembly beforehand. He says he has received over 2.5 million votes on the platform so far, despite only being in Ajmer, Alwar and Karnataka.<br /><br /><strong>Fake votes<br /></strong><br />While that's an impressive number, there seems to be a very real chance of fake votes being cast. To battle that, the app takes the user's phone number when signing up. It uses this to tap into telecom operators' databases and get your name. It then tallies this to voter databases and decides which constituency you belong to.<br /><br />There's also Aadhaar. Since most numbers today are being attached to Aadhaar cards, the app taps into the UIDAI's APIs to verify users using their Aadhaar numbers. It doesn't actually see your Aadhaar number here but uses the mobile number and name to verify what constituency you belong to. <br /><br />Mittal says that his app will still have a 4% margin for error, but argues that this margin won't matter when it's reaching millions of users.<br /><br /><strong>What's the end game?<br /></strong><br />While Mittal's goal is to make his app a watchdog, he has business opportunities in the analytics he can sell to political parties. But more importantly, he wants to sell this data to media outlets, making him a direct competitor to election research firms like Cvoter, Today's Chanakya and more.<br /><br />Further, Mittal says that he can also access user data if he wants to, but he's wary of doing so in the wake of the Cambridge Analytica scandal. He says he can extrapolate caste and religion from a person's name, while data about birth and some other information can be obtained from the election commission.<br /><br />Having started less than six months ago, this is a long-term plan. The app is yet to launch in all cities, though databases are being built for all of them. The hook here is in transparency, the fact that the votes come from real users. Mittal’s users aren’t obtained from Facebook ads alone, he says he sends real people down to villages etc. to put the app directly on people’s phones.<br />

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Hamas, the group that controls Gaza, took dozens of Israelis hostage, Israeli officials said.</li><li>It's unclear precisely how many hostages were taken and what their condition may be.</li></ul><p>When Hamas militants crossed into Israel on Saturday morning in the opening series of attacks that a unleashed war that has claimed hundreds of lives in both Israel and Gaza, they targeted Israeli citizens as hostages. More than 100 were taken back to Gaza as captives, the <a href="https://www.ajc.org/news/what-is-known-about-israeli-hostages-taken-by-hamas" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Israeli government</a> has said. </p><p>"These are numbers that were up until now unimaginable," Lt. Col. Jonathan Conricus, a spokesperson for the Israel Defense Forces, <a href="https://news.yahoo.com/women-children-seniors-believed-among-125502809.html">said</a>. "This will shape the future of this war."</p><p>In the days since Hamas' attack, Israeli families have turned to the international community — telling stories about their missing loved ones in press conferences, television interviews, and on social media — in a bid to garner support.</p><p>One family in Nir Oz, a kibbutz in southern Israel not far from the Gaza border, saw five members captured by Hamas, Abbey Onn, a cousin of those now assumed to be hostages, told Insider via a phone call.</p><p>Onn, an American who lives in Herzliya, near Tel Aviv, told Insider that five of her family members, ranging from age 12 to 80, were believed to have been kidnapped. But since Saturday, the family has received no up-to-date information on their well-being, she said.</p><p>Among those kidnapped were three children between the ages of 12 and 14; a 50-year-old father; and an 80-year-old grandmother, she said. Onn said it was possible that Hamas may have set their home on fire to lure them outside.</p><p>"I feel devastated because I understand that Israel is going to do what it needs to protect the majority of its citizens," Onn said. "I don't know what the solution to this will be. I don't know what the outcome is."</p><p>Spokespersons for the US State Department, Israeli government, and Israel Defence Forces did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Tuesday. <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/hamas-threatens-israel-gaza-kill-civilians-hostages-siege-rcna119532" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Hamas has threatened</a> to kill civilian hostages should Israel target civilian sites in Gaza "without warning," a representative for the group said. That's likely to create difficult conflicts for Israel in the days ahead, as its government balances concerns for the hostages' safety with the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/netanyahu-israel-response-hamas-attack-devastating-for-gaza-2023-10">swift and punishing response</a> it's promised to deliver.</p><p>"As the Israeli military responds to what's happened, obviously ensuring that it does so while also safeguarding the Israelis who have been taken captive becomes imperative," Ted Deutch, the CEO of the American Jewish Committee and former Democratic member of the House of Representatives from Florida, told Insider on Monday. </p><p>He added that the American Jewish Committee's offices in Jerusalem and the US were actively "responding when we receive calls from family members" about missing loved ones. "We try to get them in touch with the appropriate people in Israel who can be helpful."</p><h2><strong>The captors close in</strong></h2><p>Onn said her loved ones were terrified when Hamas came to their home.</p><p>"We started getting WhatsApp messages from family members that Hamas was in the kibbutz," Onn said. "They could hear Hamas in the house. They could hear gunfire, and we understood that they were afraid for their lives. They didn't know if they would get out."</p><p>Some members of Onn's family, including Hadas, the children's mother, escaped Hamas militants. But, as for those who were taken, Onn said the family has to hold on to hope during an excruciating time.</p><p>"You try to stay one notch above the emotions and try to push through and do anything you can to make sure that the world sees this and understands," she said. And she said that there is a distinction between the Palestinian people and Hamas, which she called a "terror organization" that's distinct from civilians in Gaza.</p><p>Hamas' goal in taking hostages back to Gaza remains unclear, but <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2023/10/09/world/middleeast/israel-hostages-hamas-explained.html#:~:text=What%20happens%20next%3F,Israel%20strikes%20back%20in%20Gaza." target="_blank" rel="noopener">some have speculated</a> that they could be used to bargain in an eventual negotiation or prisoner swap with Israel. <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/shes-strong-lady-family-abducted-elderly-israeli-plead-her-release-2023-10-09/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Reuters reported</a> Monday, citing a source briefed on the talks, that Qatari mediators had "held urgent calls" to try to secure the release of kidnapped Israeli women and children in exchange for 36 Palestinian women and children held in Israeli jails.</p><p>Hamas may also be hoping that the presence of Israelis will deter Jerusalem from pressing a full-scale attack inside Gaza, though recent reports suggested that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government is readying a large-scale <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/israel-gearing-up-ground-invasion-war-with-hamas-risks-expanding-2023-10">ground invasion</a>.</p><p>The abductions also stand to deal a painful, long-term psychological blow to Israel, Kenneth Quinn, an American high school English teacher who's lived in the country for more than three decades, told Insider.</p><p>"Israelis are extremely, extremely sensitive to hostages being taken," Quinn said, adding that the country had engaged in prisoner swaps over the years, leading to the release of numerous operatives to groups known to engage in terrorist activity.</p><h2><strong>A plea from loved ones</strong></h2><p>Information about missing loved ones has been hard to come by, people in Israel told Insider on Sunday and Monday. Some families are speaking with international media outlets to share their stories.</p><p>"We know that the government and the military are working their channels, but we don't know much more," Onn said.</p><p>"We're optimistic that, if we can raise the level of urgency on this in the international community, that there'll be enough pressure that these people will be released," she added, noting that her family was also trying to liaise with the consulates of the French and American governments because some of her loved ones hold more than one passport.</p><p>Meanwhile, numerous other families have taken to public forums to plead for the hostages to be released. </p><p>Families of kidnapped Americans gathered for a press conference in Tel Aviv on Tuesday afternoon, where they appealed to Washington for help. Nahar Neta, an American citizen born in Israel whose mother Adrienne Neta was captured by Hamas and taken to Gaza, said that families had received "zero communication from the Israeli government."</p><p>"All we ask from the Biden administration and the Secretary of State Blinken is to act to the immediate release of all hostages, and remember that the US government has direct responsibility to the lives of the US citizens that are held hostage by these terrorists," Neta said during the televised conference. "So whatever any government needs to do in order to make that happen, please make that happen."</p><p>Rubi Chen, whose son Itay is missing following the attack, added during the media event that his family had been in contact with the State Department and US embassy in Israel. He said the Israeli government had given his family an "indication" that Itay was considered "missing in action," he said.</p><p>Chen said there had been "no formal or concentrated attempt to talk to us as a group and updating us about what they are doing in this matter" when asked at the press conference by NBC News anchor Lester Holt about whether the families had been contacted by government authorities. He said he thought it would be a "legit request" for State Department representatives to advise families on "what they are planning to do."</p><p>John Kirby, a spokesperson for the National Security Council at the White House, told reporters in a Monday night briefing that the US government was in "direct communication with Israeli officials" about the hostage crisis, and had also "been hearing from many family members."</p><p>"The President has directed his team to work with their Israeli counterparts on every aspect of the hostage crisis, including sharing intelligence and deploying experts from across the United States government to consult with and advise Israeli counterparts on hostage recovery efforts," Kirby said, <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/press-briefings/2023/10/10/virtual-on-the-record-gaggle-by-nsc-coordinator-for-strategic-communications-john-kirby-on-hamas-terrorist-attacks-in-israel/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to a transcript</a>.</p><h2><strong>'I just want my baby, my son back'</strong></h2><p>In a televised interview Monday night with CNN, Shelly Shem Tov, an Israeli mother whose 21-year-old son Omer was taken hostage, said she just wants her family to be whole again.</p><p>Speaking to CNN's Jake Tapper, Shem Tov recounted the call she received from Omer before he was kidnapped. </p><p>"He was in panic. He told us that they are shooting guns," she told Tapper. The family tracked Omer's location on his cell phone, she added, and said they watched as his signal showed him crossing the border into Gaza. They haven't spoken since, she said.</p><p>Shem Tov said that the family didn't have information on Omer's condition, but, hours after he was abducted, they received a Telegram video showing a young man lying down on the bed of a pickup truck, handcuffed, who they believe is Omer. He appeared unhurt, Shem Tov said, but added that she'd received no new information in the following days.</p><p>"I just want my baby, my son back," Shem Tov said. Families of Israelis kidnapped by Hamas are pleading for their release and say they have no idea how their relatives are doing

Months later, Meidav found out the same individual had similarly harassed one of her peers.</span></p><p>The whole episode came back to her consciousness starting in 2017, when sexual misconduct <span style="font-weight: 400;"><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/harvey-weinstein-bragged-about-sleeping-with-jennifer-lawrence-2018-12">allegations against Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein</a></span> began trickling out, sparking the #MeToo movement. </p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">"Everything changed with the #MeToo campaign as it appeared on the TV screens and in the newspapers," Meidav said. "We realized that there's a deeper problem that is going on. It will affect the workplace probably forever. And I started researching, and we came up with this idea that reporting can be fixed from the inside."</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Many HR departments rely on hotlines to report misconduct, but the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/obama-discrimination-sexual-harassment-will-kill-companies-2019-3">process can take months or years</a>. The same night that the allegations against Weinstein were first reported, Meidav got to work on what she sees as a better way - one that might make employees feel better about the process, while potentially speeding up any investigation.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Her solution: Vault Platform, an app that lets users save and time-stamp potential evidence, like inappropriate texts, e-mails, or messages, directly on their devices. In the case of an investigation, a time-stamped workplace diary can be invaluable evidence, and Vault Platform aims to simplify the process. </span><span style="font-weight: 400;"></span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Importantly, too, Vault Platform includes a feature called GoTogether, which allows users to pool their evidence and jointly file a claim - a feature that Meidav saw as vital to helping give victims more power, and the ability to support one another. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">For several months, Meidav juggled her project with her responsibilities as a senior energy and climate advisor in the British government. But by March 2018, Vault Platform was born and she was pitching investors full time. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In April, Meidav, now 34 years old, successfully raised $4.2 million in seed funding from Kindred Capital, Angular Ventures, Jane VC, and System.One. Meidav plans to grow her eight-person team, even as she says that Vault Platform is starting to find some traction with users in Silicon Valley - though it's not ready to discuss specific customers just yet.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">"There was an idea that was stronger than me, and my plans, and my career path, and everything I thought I got figured out about my life," Meidav told Business Insider. Now, Tile's VP of People thinks she's cracked the secret of building company culture even in the hard times.</span></em></a></p><h2><strong>Go together</strong><span style="font-weight: 400;"> </span></h2><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Meidav knew from her own experience that employees, and </span><span style="font-weight: 400;"><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sheryl-sandberg-60-of-male-managers-unreasonably-avoid-women-2019-5">particularly female employees,</a></span><span style="font-weight: 400;"> would be more likely to report misconduct if they knew they weren't the first or only one making such accusations, leading to the GoTogether feature.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">"For the employee, it gives the ability to strength in numbers which is so important when it comes to reporting. With companies, it allows them to see those harmful patterns before they become tomorrow's news," Meidav said.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Meidav said the GoTogether feature was non-negotiable while she was building Vault Platform. She believes the feature could have saved a lot of pain if she had access to a similar tool all those years ago when she and her peer had the same bad experience with the same hiring manager. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;"> "If I would've known, it would've changed everything for me because from a credibility perspective. "The Delhi election is completely fought and voted on education and the work done on the ground. We are contesting this election on the work done by our government but the BJP wants to divert attention," Kejriwal told <a href="https://www.indiatoday.in/elections/delhi-assembly-polls-2020/story/arvind-kejriwal-interview-delhi-polls-caa-nrc-amit-shah-bjp-shaheen-bagh-1641344-2020-01-29">India Today.</a><br /><br />AAP did point out how the protests are creating traffic issues, something that would strike a chord with car owners in Delhi, but did not harp on it for too long. <br /><br /><strong>“Shoot the traitors,” cried BJP</strong><br />When BJP’s Member of Parliament Anurag Thakur prodded people in his rally to “<em>Goli maaro gaddaron ko</em>” (shoot the traitors) — while referring to the protestors at Shaheen Bagh— it may have seemed like a low-hanging fruit for the AAP to capitalise on. <br /><br />

<br />Kejriwal could have called for Thakur’s prosecution for trying to incite violence in an election rally. That would have meant taking a clear side in a completely polarised debate. Instead, the Delhi chief minister played safe. <br /><br />He watched the Election Commission ban Thakur from campaigning for 48 hours and even though he did criticise it, he quickly returned to his own strength⁠— the improvement of Delhi schools and the proliferation of free local clinics for the poor across the city. <br /><br /><strong>The ‘Hindu Muslim’video<br /></strong>The BJP complained to the Election Commission about a video that Kejriwal posted on Twitter, ahead of the election, on February 2. <br /><br />

The video showed other parties talking on religious issues but Kejriwal focusing on development and women safety.<br /><br />According to the BJP, it has the potential of “aggravating existing differences”. The poll watchdog also said that Kejriwal’s remarks violated the Model Code of Conduct.<br /><br /><strong>Kejriwal did his bit to appease ‘Hindu’ voters<br /></strong>While charging the BJP for ratcheting up the sentiments of Hindu fundamentalists, Kejriwal did his bit to woo the same voters. In a public event hosted by a TV channel, the Delhi Chief Minister started chanting <em>Hanuman Chalisa</em>, a prayer to the Hindu deity <em>Hanuman</em>, proving his religious affiliation and credentials to those who cared.<br /><br />If the average BJP supporter who is concerned about the “Hindu” cause— as sceptical as he may be of Kejriwal⁠— sat down to notice the chant, he had to hear the CM’s story of how the AAP government delivered on its promises in the last five years. In effect, he landed on a pitch meant for the BJP, albeit for a fleeting moment, but played to his own strengths to woo the BJP voter.<br /><br />

Election strategy: AAP may win in Delhi by not falling for BJP’s traps

Google demoed two phone calls on stage to give people a taste of what to expect.</p><p>For the most part, people focused on two aspects of Google Duplex:</p><ol><li><strong>How natural it sounded.</strong> Google Duplex uses Google's new natural-sounding AI, which adds its own little air-fillers between words in the same way humans do, like "um," and "uh."</li><li><strong>The fact the people on the phone didn't seem to know they were talking to computer software.</strong> Pichai did mention during the presentation that Google is working hard to "get the user experience and the expectations right for both businesses and users," but people think final product should include some kind of greeting so they're aware they're talking to Google Assistant and not an actual human being.</li></ol><p>And so, reactions to Google Duplex haved mainly played out in two ways: People are blown away by what Google has created, and how far their AI efforts have come. But people are scared, too, and they're concerned about what this could mean for artificial intelligence and the future of human interaction.</p><p>Some people believe Google Duplex presents a deeper moral issue.&#xa0;</p><p>For what it's worth, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/google-insiders-final-version-duplex-may-sound-different-2018-5">Google told Business Insider</a> it will likely tweak the final version of Google Duplex so people feel comfortable using it - and that would likely include communicating that it is, in fact, a machine talking on a person's behalf, but Google could also remove some of the "ahs" and "ums" that make some people feel uncomfortable.</p><p>Still, many are excited by the possibilities presented by Google Duplex:</p><p>Google Duplex is likely years away from a commercial rollout, and it will almost certainly look different by the time it's released to the public.</p><p>Still, regardless whether you think Google Duplex is good or bad, it's incredible to see how far Google's AI has come in the last decade.</p><p>Years ago, the main thrust of these personal assistants was simple stuff: getting the weather, or setting a timer without needing to open an app. Soon, though, Google Assistant could be calling businesses on your behalf and setting up appointments.
