Facing growing demand for his resignation, Nepal's embattled Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli has said that the ruling communist party is facing a grave crisis, indicating that it may split soon, according to a media report on Sunday. Oli, at an emergency meeting of the Cabinet at his official residence, told the Cabinet ministers that "some of our party members are also trying to remove President Bidya Devi Bhandari from the power," My Republica newspaper quoted a senior leader as saying. "Now, conspiracies are being hatched to remove me from the post of prime minister and party chairman," the prime minister said on Saturday, adding that he will not let it happen. The ruling party is facing a grave crisis, Oli said. After Oli's remarks about the conspiracy to impeach the president, three former prime ministers -- Pushpa Kamal Dahal '<keyword id="12695" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Prachanda">Prachanda</keyword>', Madhav Nepal and Jhanalanth Khanal -- met Bhandari and clarified that the rumour about <keyword id="9401461" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="the-nepal-communist-party">the Nepal Communist Party</keyword> (NCP) leaders trying to remove her from office were untrue, The Kathmandu Post reported. On Saturday, a crucial meeting of the NCP's 45-member powerful Standing Committee to decide the political future of Oli was postponed until Monday to allow more time for the top leadership to iron out their differences over his style of functioning and anti-India statements. During the Cabinet meeting, a defiant Oli said that he will not be forced to accept the party's Standing Committee decision. He also urged the ministers to make their position clear whether they support him or not. "I had to make a quick decision to prorogue the budget session of Parliament last week after coming to know that some of our party members were hatching conspiracy to register an impeachment motion against the President at Parliament," Oli told the ministers. Surya Thapa, the prime minister's press aide, said that the prime minister invited the ministers to share the latest political developments in the country. Prior to the meeting, Oli held a one-on-one meeting with President Bhandari at her office in Maharajgunj. Oli's statement comes at a time when the intra-party rift in the NCP is at its peak after majority of the party's Standing Committee members and Central Secretariat members demanded his immediate resignation from the post of Prime Minister and party chairman, accusing the government of failing to live up to the people's expectations. He has accused NCP executive chairman Prachanda of non-cooperation in running the government while Prachanda is accusing Oli of imposing hegemony in the party. Prime Minister Oli, 68, last week claimed that there have been various kinds of activities in the "embassies and hotels" to remove him from power. He said some Nepalese leaders were also involved in the plot after his government redrew the country's political map by incorporating three strategically key Indian territories -- Lipulekh, Kalapani and Limpiyadhura. Raising baseless accusations against India and leaders of his own party by the Prime Minister was not appropriate, a senior leader of the party quoted Prachanda as saying during the Standing Committee meeting last week. Prachanda has time and again spoken about the lack of coordination between the government and the party and he was pressing for a one-man one position system to be followed by the NCP. The differences between the two factions of the NCP -- one led by Oli and the other led by Prachanda -- intensified after the prime minister unilaterally decided to prorogue the budget session of Parliament last week. In May 2018, when Oli and Dahal announced formation of the Nepal Communist Party, they had reached a gentleman's agreement to lead the government in turn, two-and-a-half years each. But according to the November 2019 agreement, Oli would lead the government for the full five-year term and Dahal would run the party as "executive chairman". Dahal has maintained that Oli failed to uphold the spirit of the November 2019 agreement, hence he should abide by the May 2018 gentleman's agreement, making way for him to lead the government. Oli smells a conspiracy against the communist party ahead of being sworn in as the Prime Minister of Nepal again

Kathmandu [Nepal], June 27 (ANI): Chinese billionaire <keyword id="424838" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Jack-Ma" source="Orion">Jack Ma</keyword> arrived in Nepal's capital Kathmandu on Tuesday afternoon, confirmed officials. The co-founder of the Chinese online trade platform, Alibaba, landed at Tribhuwan International Airport at around 2 pm (local time) today in his private Boeing 747 Max aircraft. "He landed in Kathmandu today in his private plane. He said that he flew from China to Nepal in the immigration form," Chief of Nepal's Immigration Department Jhalakram Adhikari told over phone. The Chinese billionaire who arrived with a seven-member team is staying at a hotel in Kathmandu. According to Adhikari, the Director General of the Department of Immigration, Jack Ma has been granted 15 days tourist visa and is scheduled to call on Nepal Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal. No official announcement has been made about the Chinese entrepreneur's arrival in Kathmandu and he hasn't demanded any security during his stay in the country. The reasons for his visit to Nepal also haven't been made public. Earlier this March, the Chinese magnate returned to mainland China after spending roughly a year overseas, according to people familiar with the matter as cited in The Wall Street Journal. Jack Ma, who spent the majority of the previous year in Japan, made a trip back to China, according to the sources quoted by WSJ. He had also visited Singapore and Australia and spent the most recent Lunar New Year in Hong Kong. According to a report in the Voice of America (VOA), after returning to China, Jack Ma visited the Yungu School, a private academy in Hangzhou funded by his Alibaba Group, which includes one of the world's biggest online commerce companies. At the school, he talked about "the future of education with the campus directors" and "the challenges and opportunities" that "new technological change brings to education," according to the school's WeChat account, the VOA report said. Jack Ma has maintained a low profile after Ant Group Co. cancelled initial public offerings in Hong Kong and Shanghai that were expected to raise more than USD 34 billion in November 2020, according to Wall Street Journal. The cancellations took place as authorities were angered over Jack Ma's remarks at a financial forum. Authorities then opened an investigation against Alibaba for allegedly engaging in anticompetitive activities on its e-commerce platform, and the company was ultimately slammed with a record-breaking USD 2.8 billion fine, the WSJ reported. Soon after, China began a broad regulatory crackdown on other private companies, increasing regulations on everything from video games and education to real estate. Jack Ma relinquished leadership of Ant Group in January this year after the company's shareholders approved a restructuring of business. The crackdown on the fintech operations of more than a dozen internet companies was "basically" over, according to the party chief at China's central bank, who made the statement on the same day, the WSJ report said. Senior diplomats of India and Nepal on Monday held a virtual meeting to review the progress made on various India-aided developmental projects being implemented in the Himalayan nation. The meeting came days after Nepal Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli telephoned his Indian counterpart <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> to greet him on India's 74th Independence Day, in the first high-level contact after bilateral ties came under severe strain following issuance of a new political map by Nepal in May. Nepalese Foreign Secretary <keyword id="2609598" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Shanker-Das-Bairagi">Shanker Das Bairagi</keyword> and Indian Ambassador to Nepal Vinay Mohan Kwatra are leading the delegations representing their respective countries during the oversight mechanism meeting, according to Nepal Foreign Ministry sources here. The meeting, being held virtually due to the coronavirus outbreak, will assess the progress made on various India aided development projects being implemented in Nepal, the sources said. No further details of the meeting were available. The ties between India and Nepal came under strain after Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated an 80-km-long strategically crucial road connecting the Lipulekh pass with Dharchula in Uttarakhand on May 8. Nepal protested the inauguration of the road claiming that it passed through its territory. Days later, Nepal came out with the new map showing Lipulekh, Kalapani and Limpiyadhura as its territories. In June, Nepal's Parliament approved the new political map of the country featuring areas which India maintains belong to it. In its reaction, after Nepal's lower house of parliament approved the bill, India termed as untenable the "artificial enlargement" of territorial claims by the neighbouring country. India said Nepal's action violates an understanding reached between the two countries to resolve the boundary issues through talks. Prime Minister Oli has been asserting that Lipulekh, Kalapani and Limpiyadhura belong to Nepal and vowed to "reclaim" them from India. Nepal and India meet to discuss development projects amid border tensions

After India, China is now embroiled in a fresh boundary dispute with Nepal in its remote Humla district that is close to the Nepal-Tibet border. The dispute emerged after the Chinese side unilaterally constructed 11 cemented buildings in the Nepali territory and people in the Lapcha area where the buildings were constructed, brought it to the notice of the Humla administration. The area that Nepal is claiming, is remote from the district headquarters, difficult to reach, barren, unused and a treacherous one but the Chinese side can easily cross the border due to the close proximity and road access. After the Lapcha people brought the matter to the administration's notice that nine building have already been erected by the Chinese, who have also asked Nepalese to refrain from visiting across the bordering area, the Home Ministry of Nepal sent senior officials to the disputed site this week to ascertain the volume of the land encroached upon by the Chinese. Though the officials have yet to submit their report to the Home Ministry but Bishnu Bahadur Lama, Chairman of the Namkha Rural Municipality who was the first to bring the matter to the administration's notice, said that they inspected the disputed area, interacted with locals and held brief communication with Chinese security officials. "They (Chinese) told us that due to Covid pandemic, it was not possible to sit in a face to face talks urging that those 11 buildings were constructed inside Chinese territory and asked us to leave the place. Then we left. It is happening largely due to one missing pillar," Lama said. According to Lama and other Nepali officials, during the road construction in that area some eight years ago, a boundary pillar no 11 was damaged and had not been erected since. After we failed to ascertain the pillar no 11, the Chinese built the buildings whose purpose is not known, Lama said, now Chinese have barred Nepalese of that area from visiting the Lapcha area. But as per locals, that particular territory belongs to us which has been used by the Nepalese for several purposes in the past, Lama said, it was basically used for grazing by both sides. The Ministries of Home Affairs and Foreign Affairs of Nepal in Kathmandu are waiting the ground report from Humla before taking up the matter with the Chinese side. After the Nepal media started reporting about the alleged Chinese encroachment, <keyword id="9986157" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="the-chinese-embassy-in-kathmandu">the Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu</keyword> on Tuesday issued a statement and clarified its position. China and Nepal are friendly neighbours, the statement said, China has always respected Nepal's sovereignty and territorial integrity. "The buildings mentioned by the media have been verified to be on the Chinese side of the China-Nepal border. The Nepali side may make verification again. China and Nepal have no territorial disputes. The two sides have always maintained close communication on border affairs," the statement further reads. There are news coming from Humla that China has encroached the Nepali territory and erected some buildings, former Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Kamal Thapa said: "I request the government to release the facts and truths regarding the land encroachment. Thapa has also requested with Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli to send back the Chinese from the Nepali territory immediately." Nepal and China do not have major boundary dispute except for their differences over the height of Mt. Everest. Since China came up with rock height of Mt Everest as 8,844 metre in 2005 and recognised it, Nepal declined to accept it. The accepted height of Mt Everest is 8,848 metre. Both Nepal and China are separately measuring the height of Mt Everest and the findings are yet to be announced. After India, China is now breaching the borders of Nepal

Amidst reports of widespread devastation across <keyword id="12266" type="COUNTRY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Nepal">Nepal</keyword> and the upper Himalayan region of India closest to the epicentre of the massive 7.9 magnitude <keyword id="6362774" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="earthquake">earthquake</keyword>, troubling reports of a climbing death toll are emerging. These are the top 10 developments from the massive natural catastrophe. 
 1)Television footage showed that large numbers of offices and homes had collapsed in <keyword id="18568" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="kathmandu">Kathmandu</keyword>, while roads had been split in two by the force of the impact. 
 2)Tremors were felt in Delhi, nearly 1,100 kms away, and states including Rajasthan, Bengal and Bihar. Some people were seen rushing out of their homes and offices in cities like <keyword id="6354925" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Kolkata">Kolkata</keyword>, Guwahati and Jaipur among others. 
 3)<keyword id="71" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Prime-Minister">Prime Minister</keyword> <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> has called an emergency meeting at 3 pm to discuss the impact of the earthquake. He tweeted, "We are in the process of finding more information and are working to reach out to those affected, both at home and in Nepal," Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in a tweet. 
 4)"The damage potential of any earthquake above seven magnitude is high. The duration of the earthquake tremors was different at different places. It was around 50-55 seconds long in Delhi," said Laxman Singh Rathore, Director-General of the <keyword id="55209" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Indian-Meteorological-Department">Indian Meteorological Department</keyword>.

9)The earthquake was also felt across large areas of Bangladesh, triggering panic in the capital Dhaka as people rushed out onto the streets.

It will send a report to New Delhi so that all help could be provided to the Himalayan nation on priority.

India has scaled up relief and rescue operations in quake-hit Nepal, deploying over two dozen aircraft and choppers along with nearly 1000 trained personnel and said the situation in the Himalayan nation was "very, very serious". 
 
 
A slew of steps have been taken for speedy evacuation of stranded tourists including goodwill visas to foreigners and mobilising of buses and ambulances to bring them by road. 
 India has so far deployed 13 military aircraft, three civilian aircraft of <keyword id="2573" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Air-India">Air India</keyword> and Jet Airways, six Mi-17 helicopters, two Advanced Light Helicopters while two more Mi-17 choppers are kept in standby.

"Our experience has shown that at this stage the best way we can help is by pressing vehicles and tractors into relief operations to help in search and rescue and in transporting both the injured to medical facilities and in carrying relief supplies to affected areas. In both Nepal and India, we intend to undertake these activities right away and our branches and dealers in Nepal and in Bihar and other affected Indian districts will make both vehicles and tractors available to authorities and relief agencies. 
 
"In the second phase, when longer term rehabilitation becomes the focus, we will evaluate the quantum and modality of monetary contributions," Mahindra told TOI. 
 <keyword id="2825599" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Indiabulls-Foundation">Indiabulls Foundation</keyword> will be deploying both manpower and financial resources over the next few days to provide healthcare, essential commodities, food and clothes. "We are working out the logistics and will ensure presence in affected areas of Nepal over the next 2-3 days. We had taken a similar lead during the Jammu floods a few months back," said Gagan Banga, VC and MD, Indiabulls Group. 
 India Inc since independence has played a major role in helping people during calamities, said <keyword id="75979" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Videocon-Industries">Videocon Industries</keyword> chairman <keyword id="7025" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Venugopal-Dhoot">Venugopal Dhoot</keyword>. "That's our culture. So we at Videocon will provide financial help for rehabilitation in Nepal Dhoot told TOI. He also praised the <keyword id="71" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Prime-Minister">Prime Minister</keyword>'s prompt action to help Nepal. Industry bodies <keyword id="6358345" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="CII">CII</keyword> and <keyword id="6355001" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="FICCI">FICCI</keyword> have also swung into action. "CII has already started working towards mobilizing support from the industry towards immediate relief operations in Nepal. We are in touch with the ministry of external affairs, the Indian embassy in Kathmandu and also Nepalese consulate in Kolkata. We are arranging relief material — ready-to-eat food, water, biscuits, medicine, blankets — which would be transported through the neighbouring states of Bihar and Bengal," said CII director general <keyword id="6560611" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Chandrajit-Banerjee">Chandrajit Banerjee</keyword>. 
 FICCI too has joined hands with the Indian government for relief and rehabilitation work in Nepal, said Didar Singh, secretary general, FICCI. Industry body's president, <keyword id="2659015" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Jyotsana-Suri">Jyotsana Suri</keyword>, has committed to provide water and about 5,000 bottles are being arranged to be dispatched. "More than 2,000 tents, blankets, baby food, and OTC drugs are also being supplied by our members, which will be dispatched to the disaster site in coordination with the ," Singh said. 
 <keyword id="101435" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Bajaj-Group">Bajaj Group</keyword> chairman <keyword id="33278" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Rahul-Bajaj">Rahul Bajaj</keyword> also praised the government's quake relief operations. "We have been at the forefront when it comes to helping during natural calamities like this. I have been very much impressed with the Indian government's instant response to undertake relief measures. This time also we will help as we did in the past. Being a corporate house, we can support financially. Our heart goes out to those affected," Bajaj told TOI.

Nepal Earthquake: Super impressed with rescue ops, India Inc praises Modi and pledges full support

Over 400 are so far known to have died in a massive <keyword id="6362774" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="earthquake">earthquake</keyword> of 7.9 magnitude which hit large parts of <keyword id="12266" type="COUNTRY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Nepal">Nepal</keyword> on Saturday, the government said. Five people are reported dead so far in Bihar; tremors were felt across large swathes of Northern India including Delhi. 
 "In <keyword id="18568" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="kathmandu">Kathmandu</keyword> 71 have been reported dead so far," Home Ministry spokesman Laxmi Prasad Dhakal told news agency AFP. Another 43 had been reported dead in the nearby Bhaktapur district, he added. 
 
This was the worst earthquake to hit Nepal in 80 years. The capital of Kathmandu has been left devastated by a huge earthquake of 7.9 magnitude which pushed buildings into collapse, turned iconic landmarks into rubble, and left many injured. 
 
At the main hospital in Kathmandu, people with broken limbs and arms were being rushed in for treatment. It was unclear how many people were injured. 
 
The historic Dharara Tower built in the 19th century in Kathmandu collapsed, trapping at least 50 people, Nepal media reported. The tower had been open to visitors for the last 10 years and had a viewing balcony on its eighth floor. Witnesses spoke of dead bodies being removed from the site. 
 
Photographs from Kathmandu posted online showed buildings left in rubble, large cracks along roads and residents sitting in the street holding babies. 
 Mountaineer Alex Gavan tweeted from Mount Pumori, about 8 km west of <keyword id="14834" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Mount-Everest">Mount Everest</keyword>, that the quake had caused an avalanche on Everest. 
 
"Everest base camp huge earthquake then huge avalanche from pumori. Running for life from my tent. Unhurt. Many many people up the mountain," tweeted Gavan.

Army chief Gen MM Naravane will arrive in Nepal on Wednesday on a three-day crucial visit, which Indian officials here say will deepen the long-standing bonds of friendship between the two armies and provide an opportunity for both sides to explore avenues to further strengthen bilateral defence partnership for mutual benefit. Naravane's visit is largely aimed at resetting relations with the Himalayan nation after the ties came under severe strain following a bitter border row. Gen Naravane is visiting Nepal at the official invitation of Nepal Army chief Gen Purnachandra Thapa. Indian Embassy spokesperson Naveen Kumar said that Gen Naravane's visit "will deepen the long-standing and customary bonds of friendship between the two armies." "His visit will provide an opportunity for both sides to discuss the bilateral defence partnership and explore avenues to further strengthen it for mutual benefit." Gen Naravane will pay homage at the martyrs' memorial at the Army Pavilion on Thursday morning and receive a guard of honour at the Nepal Army headquarters, according to Nepal Army sources. He will hold formal talks with his Nepalese counterpart at the Nepal Army headquarters on Thursday. Mutual interests between the two armies and bilateral relations will mainly feature during the talk, Nepal Army sources said. The <keyword id="78682" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-army-chief">Indian Army chief</keyword> will also gift an ambulance and medical equipment for a mobile field hospital to be operated by the Nepal Army. He will also hold interaction with senior officials at the Nepal Army headquarters. In the afternoon, the <keyword id="6354416" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Army">Indian Army</keyword> chief will be conferred with the honorary rank of General of Nepal Army by President Bidya Devi Bhandari amidst a special ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan. He will also pay a courtesy call on President Bhandari after the ceremony. Gen Naravane will attend a dinner reception hosted by Nepal Army chief at Nepal Army headquarters. Gen Naravane will address the student officers at the Army Command and Staff College at Shivapuri, in the outskirts of Kathmandu on Friday morning. In the afternoon, Gen Naravane will meet Prime Minister and Defence Minister K.P Sharma Oli at the Prime Minister's Official Residence at Baluwatar before wrapping up his visit. "I am delighted to be visiting Nepal on their kind invitation and to meet my counterpart Gen Purna Chandra Thapa, Chief of the Army Staff of the Nepali Army. I am sure this visit will go a long way in strengthening the bonds of friendship that the two armies cherish," Gen Naravane said in New Delhi ahead of the visit. The Chief of Army Staff said he was also grateful for the opportunity to call on Prime Minister Oli. India's decision to send the Army Chief to Nepal to reset the ties is seen as part of a larger exercise by New Delhi to rejuvenate relations with Myanmar, the Maldives, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Bhutan and Afghanistan in the wake of greater efforts by China to expand its influence in the region. The ties between the two countries came under strain after Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated an 80-km-long strategically crucial road connecting the Lipulekh pass with Dharchula in Uttarakhand on May 8. Nepal protested the inauguration of the road claiming that it passed through its territory. Days later, Nepal came out with the new map showing Lipulekh, Kalapani and Limpiyadhura as its territories. After Nepal released the map, India reacted sharply, calling it a "unilateral act" and cautioning Kathmandu that such "artificial enlargement" of territorial claims will not be acceptable to it. In June, Nepal's Parliament approved the new political map of the country featuring areas which India maintains belong to it. In its reaction after Nepal's lower house of parliament approved the bill, India termed as untenable the "artificial enlargement" of territorial claims by the neighbouring country. India said Nepal's action violates an understanding reached between the two countries to resolve the boundary issues through talks. Nepal Prime Minister Oli has been asserting that Lipulekh, Kalapani and Limpiyadhura belong to Nepal and vowed to "reclaim" them from India. The Lipulekh pass is a far western point near Kalapani, a disputed border area between Nepal and India. Both India and Nepal claim Kalapani as an integral part of their territory - India as part of Uttarakhand's Pithoragarh district and Nepal as part of Dharchula district.
