The funding in Indian startups nosedived a massive 80 per cent (year-on-year) in the third quarter (July-September period) this year, with the late-stage funding seeing the biggest fall, a report showed on Tuesday. Indian startups raised $3 billion in Q3, which was also 57 per cent lower as compared to the previous quarter (Q2) this year. The average ticket size also witnessed a drop across all funding stages, with the late stage seeing the biggest fall of over 70 per cent, from $142 million in Q3 2021 to $42 million in Q3 2022. This indicated that investors are not willing to make large <keyword id="6362476" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="investments" source="Orion">investments</keyword> until economic conditions stabilise, reports market intelligence platform Tracxn. "<keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> is currently experiencing a funding slowdown which is expected to continue for the next 12-18 months and the effects of the funding slowdown are expected to intensify going forward," said <keyword id="520013" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="neha-singh" source="Orion">Neha Singh</keyword>, Co-Founder of Tracxn. Executives across the world anticipate a recession in the near future and are making preparations to cut costs. "To add to their woes, the recent energy crisis in the UK and Europe and also the sliding GBP and EUR have increased the likelihood of a global recession," Singh added. Genomics sector in India saw maximum investor interest in Q3, receiving over $231 million in funding, which is higher than the total funding received in the year 2021. The five companies that raised funding rounds of more than $100 million in the quarter were EarlySalary, 5ire, InsuranceDekho, OneCard, and BookMyShow, with the most active investors being Better Capital, Venture Catalysts and <keyword id="6426108" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="surge" source="Orion">Surge</keyword>. Some of the other key highlights were 109 startups closing their first funding round, three startups turning unicorns, 39 startups getting acquired, and two filing for their IPOs. Molbio Diagnostics, 5ire and OneCard turned unicorns and Zopper, LifeCell, Jar, DotPe, Vegrow Bigspoon, InsuranceDekho, CUSMAT, Airtribe and Serentica Global joined the Soonicorn club. India received $752 million in funding in the month of September, down by 15 per cent as compared to August and down by 83 per cent as compared to the same period last year. "We are seeing large PE and VC funds treading cautiously led by significant changes in the investment environment in recent quarters. <ul><li>Two startups – <keyword id="12437554" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="zepto" source="Orion">Zepto</keyword> and <keyword id="18141109" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="zyber-365" source="Orion">Zyber 365</keyword> – turned unicorns during the quarter.</li><li><keyword id="2924060" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="startup-funding" source="Orion">Startup funding</keyword> declined QoQ, but showed an impressive MoM growth in September.</li><li>Fintechs raised as much as $436 million, marking a 68% QoQ growth. </li></ul>Indian startup funding hit a five-year low in the third quarter of the calendar year, says a report by <keyword id="2779670" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="tracxn" source="Orion">Tracxn</keyword>. Startups raised $1.5 billion in Q3 – shrunk by almost a third on a when compared to the previous quarter, and halved year-on-year. Early-stage and seed-stage funding plummeted by 74% and 75% respectively, on a YoY basis. Late-stage rounds, in comparison, witnessed a 33% reduction. “Despite the decline in funding, India remains among the top-performing tech ecosystems globally. A promising sign in the report is the month-on-month funding growth, with an impressive 91% increase from $376 million in August 2023 to $720 million in September 2023,” said Abhishek Goyal, co-founder of Tracxn. Fintechs received $436 million in funding, marking a 68% QoQ growth – making it the best performing sub-sector. “The investment growth in fintech is propelled due to the rapid growth seen in the adoption of UPI both in the domestic market and international markets like Bhutan, France, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and Singapore,” Tracxn said. Enterprise applications funding rose by 51%, while transportation and logistics tech raised $375 million, showing a drop of 72%. Only 2 unicorns added to the list <keyword id="1579449" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Perfios" source="Orion">Perfios</keyword>, Zepto, Ola Electric, Ather Energy, and Zyber 365 raised over $100 million each. Of these, Zepto and Zyber 365 turned unicorns. They are also the only two unicorns added in the quarter. Perfios, which provides data analysis tools, raised $229 million in a Series D round. There were 33 acquisitions during the quarter – which was a 13% decrease from Q3 2022. Some of the notable acquisitions included Route Mobile's acquisition by Proximus Group for $718 million and Marico’s acquisition of Plix for $45.1 million. Drone Destination, Aha Solar, IdeaForge, and Veefin went public during the quarter, showcasing the growing maturity of the Indian tech ecosystem, says Tracxn. “India ranks as the fifth highest funded country in Q3 2023 and maintains its fourth-place position in terms of total funding for the year to date (YTD). It underscores the resilience of India's tech startups and their ability to adapt to changing market conditions,” said Neha Singh, co-founder, Tracxn. Accel, Blume, and Peak XV Partners were the top investors of the quarter. IPV, 100X.VC and Titan Capital led the seed investments, while Elevation, Tiger Global Management, and Accel were prominent in early-stage investments. Glade Brook Capital took the lead in the late-stage category.

Startup funding hits a 5-year low in July-September quarter

<keyword id="11760148" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="striker-vandana-katariya">Striker Vandana Katariya</keyword> scored a historic <keyword id="6530026" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="hat-trick">hat-trick</keyword> to keep alive the <keyword id="67705" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-womens-hockey">Indian women's hockey</keyword> team's quarterfinals hopes in the Olympics with a fighting 4-3 victory over lower-ranked South Africa in its must-win final group match here on Saturday. Vandana (4th, 17th, 49th minutes) achieved a rare feat by becoming the first Indian woman hockey player to score a hat-trick in the history of the Olympics. Young Neha Goyal (32nd) was the other goal getter as the Rani Rampal-led side registered its second consecutive win at the Games. South Africa's goals came from the sticks of Tarryn Glasby (15th), skipper Erin Hunter (30th) and Marizen Marais (39th). With two wins from their final two pool matches, India have finished the group stages with six points from five games. By virtue of this win, India have jumped to the fourth position in Pool A, but Ireland still have a chance to leapfrog the Indians. India's fate now depends on the outcome of the last Pool A match between Great Britain and Ireland. The Indians will have to wait till the evening to know their fate. A Ireland loss or a draw will be enough for India to seal their place in the quarterfinals. The top four teams from each pool will qualify for the knockout round. Needing a win to stay alive in the competition, the Indians meant business and pressed hard on the South African defence from the start. In doing so, India secured two penalty corners in the first two minutes of the match but dragflicker Gurjit Kaur's poor execution continued in the tournament. Still it didn't take India long to open their account and in the fourth minute, Vandana gave her side the lead, tapping in from close range after being set up by Navneet Kaur's great run from the right flank. India kept up the pressure and penetrated the South African circle many times without much success. But seconds from the end of first quarter, a lapse in concentration from the defence cost India dearly as South Africa drew level through Tarryn Glasby, who deflected in a long shot from Taryn Mallett. India had enough time to regain their lead through a penalty corner but wasted the opportunity. Two minutes into the second quarter, Vandana restored India's lead when he deflected in Deep Grace Ekka's flick from their fourth penalty corner. The Indians had three more chances to extend their lead in the second quarter but they couldn't do so. The Rani Rampal-led side got two more penalty corners which they wasted, and then, Neha Goyal's effort from open play was saved by the South Africa goalkeeper. Just like in the first quarter, India gave away their lead seconds away from half time when Hunter found the net from her team's first penalty corner. Two minutes after the change of ends, Neha restored the lead again, deflecting in a Rani hit from a penalty corner as the Indians executed a fine variation. The fragile Indian defence wilted under pressure once again, when South Africa drew level for the third time in the match, through a Marais strike. South Africa enjoyed a good run of play in the initial minutes of final quarter and, in the process, secured three penalty corners quickly, but this time the Indian defence did enough to thwart the dangers. In the 49th minute, a brilliant Vandana saved the day for India when she deflected in Gurjit Kaur's flick from another penalty corner. Thereafter, the Indians fell back and looked contend to keep the possession as South Africa pressed hard. Tokyo Olympics: Vandana's hat-trick keeps India's quarter final hopes alive in women's hockey

The eight-year-old company has not disclosed the amount it plans to raise with this public issue. The IPO would only consist of secondary share sale to provide exits to existing shareholders and promoters. Investors such as Flipkart’s Sachin Bansal and Binny Bansal, Elevation Capital, Accel India and Sequoia Capital India would be selling their shareholdings. Founders Goyal and Singh hold 25.46% stake in the company. Tracxn was founded in 2013 and launched in 2015. The firm offers private company data for deal sourcing, identifying mergers and acquisition (M&amp;A) targets, deal diligence, analysis and tracking emerging themes across industries and markets. It claims to track over 1.4 million private companies and works with 855 subscription customers across 50 countries. Its customer base would include venture capital (VC) firms, private equity funds and large corporates. Tracxn reported a revenue of ₹55.7 crore in the financial year that ended March 2021. The company claims that 70% of its revenue comes from outside India, primarily Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) and North American markets. Private market intelligence firm Tracxn files for an IPO

<keyword id="6360722" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="ratan-tata">Ratan Tata</keyword>, Chairman Emeritus of <keyword id="46894" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Tata-Sons">Tata Sons</keyword>, has recently invested an undisclosed amount in <keyword id="2779670" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Tracxn">Tracxn</keyword>, the Bengaluru-based startup intelligence platform. 
 
With this development,Tracxn has joined the list of almost two dozen startups and tech companies that Tata has backed in the past two years, including Snapdeal, Ola Cabs, Paytm, Urbanladder, Xiaomi, UrbanClap and DogSpot. 
 
He is also involved with venture capital firms like Kalaari Capital, IDG Ventures India and Jungle Ventures in the capacity of an advisor. 
Talking of Tracxn, it has raised angel funding from Flipkart's co-founders Sachin and Binny Bansal, Delhivery's CEO Sahil Barua and $3.5 million in series-A funding from SAIF Partners. 
 
The company was founded in 2013 by former venture capital investors Neha Singh (ex-Sequoia Capital) and Abhishek Goyal (ex-Accel Partners), and tracks over 100 sectors including enterprise infrastructure, enterprise applications, technology, consumer, mobile, digital marketing, health, education. 
 <keyword id="2928014" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Tracxn-Labs">Tracxn Labs</keyword>, an angel invest fund, and <keyword id="3401467" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Tracxn-Syndicate">Tracxn Syndicate</keyword>, an angel investment group are also run by Tracxn, putting it in competition with Let's Venture, which is another fundraising platform that has been backed by Tata. 
 
In its clientele, Tracxn boasts of venture capital funds, private equity firms and corporate development teams who use the services provided by the company it to spot investment, merger and strategic partnership opportunities in different sectors. Some of these names include Andreessen Horowitz, Sequoia, SoftBank, Google Capital, VMWare, GE and LG. 
 
In the past one year, Tracxn has increased its number of analysts assigned to exclusively tracking startups from 25 to 125. The client base has also seen a 400% increase to over 300 customers across 20 countries in the past 12 months. 
 
"Ratan Tata is a trusted household name &amp; his way of building things has played a critical role in how our thoughts shaped up in early days of our lives," Goyal told ET. "As we rapidly expand across geographies, his unconventional ways of building large companies with high diversity will be very useful," he continued.

The 2017 edition of <keyword id="6373044" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Forbes">Forbes</keyword>’s list of super achievers under the age of 30 is out and nearly 30 Indian-origin innovators, entrepreneurs and leaders featured in the list as they seek to break the status quo and transform the world. 
 
The list has 30 game changers in 20 industries which include healthcare, manufacturing, sports and finance.

 Shaun Patel, 28, is the orthopedic surgery chief resident at <keyword id="20988" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Harvard-Medical-School">Harvard Medical School</keyword> and has dozens of scientific publications in surgery journals. 
 
His company, OrthoNinja, aims to streamline communication between doctors by creating a mobile app that allows doctors to consult with one another.
