A bench comprising Chief Justice of India (CJI) D Y Chandrachud and Justices J B Pardiwala and Manoj Misra on Thursday took note of the submissions of lawyer Anas Tanwir on the issue. The bench said the matter will be listed on Friday. The plea said many candidates have been allocated cities which are highly inconvenient for them to reach. It said the test cities were allotted on July 31 and the specific centres will be declared on August 8. While the allocation of the centres was done to curb malpractices, the plea said due to the paucity of time, it is difficult for the candidates to make arrangements for travel to specific cities. Supreme Court to hear plea seeking postponement of NEET-PG on Friday

Earlier, the high court on August 31 took cognisance of a letter written to it by Nitesh Bawankar, a resident of Maharashtra's Bhandara district, raising concern over how students will reach the exam centres to appear for the JEE amid the flood situation. Bawankar sought postponement of the exam for students residing in the flood-hit parts of Nagpur, Amravati, Akola, Chandrapur, Bhandara, Gondia and Gadchiroli districts. Due to floods, students from these areas will find it difficult to appear for the JEE-Main examination, he said. On September 1, Gadchiroli collector told HC that due to heavy rains and flood, inter-district transport is affected and the situation may remain unchanged for a few more days. In such a condition, the NTA would be the appropriate authority to decide the issue of postponing the exam for students affected by flood, the collector said. The Nagpur collector told the court that 1,284 students were to attend the exam in six centres of the district and that there is no flood-like situation there. Akola collector also told the court that as there is no flood-like situation in the district, there would be no hurdle in conducting the exam there. A similar submission was made by Amravati collector. Chandrapur collector told the court that 21 villages were affected by flood in the district and rescue teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) enquired at local levels if there were any students who needed to appear for the JEE-Main exam, but no response was received. He also said there are four examination centres at the Chandrapur district headquarters, which are not affected by flood and hence, are accessible by road. Collectors of Bhandara and Gondia told the court that while their districts are worst hit due to heavy rains and release of water from the Sanjay Sarovar dam in Madhya Pradesh, there are no centres for JEE-Main examination in both these districts. They submitted that candidates appearing for the examination shall have road accessibility to Nagpur and will not face any problem in appearing for the exam. The court on Monday directed the Centre, Maharashtra government, NTA and collectors of these districts to consider postponing the JEE-Main exam for students who are residing in the flood-affected areas and are unable to reach the centres to appear for the exam. JEE 2020 Main aspirants from flood-affected areas in Maharashtra will get a chance to appear again, says Bombay HC

School and college students will lose their summer break as a part of Coronavirus lockdown

In its verdict on August 17, SC said, ‘'Life should move on even in COVID-19 times. Can we just stop the exams? We should move on. If exams are not held, won't it be a loss to the country? In March, the ministry had directed all the educational institutions — including the <keyword id="69419" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Central-Board-of-Secondary-Education">Central Board of Secondary Education</keyword> (CBSE) <keyword id="32862" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="board-exams">board exams</keyword>, university exams and entrances — to be rescheduled for later. Exams scheduled between March 19 to 31 were deferred for both Classes. “All ongoing examinations of the board for Classes-10th and 12th, being held in examination centres in India and abroad, and scheduled between 19.03.2020 to 31.3.20 (both dates inclusive), shall be rescheduled after 31st March, 2020,” CBSE <a href="https://www.ndtv.com/education/cbse-board-exam-2020-major-update-due-to-coronavirus-covid-19-2197031">said</a> earlier. The board had also called off the Class X and Class XII exams in the violence-hit Northeast Delhi — that were supposed to take place in the last week of February. Even these re-examinations were rescheduled. On May 5, the Ministry announced the new dates for the competitive exams — JEE (Joint Entrance Examination) Mains and NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test). The JEE Mains exam is now scheduled between July 19 and July 23, while NEET entrance will be held on July 26, 2020. Meanwhile, the evaluation work was also put on hold during this time. On similar lines, the Uttar Pradesh Madhyamik Shiksha Parishad also halted the marksheet evaluation process of class 10th and 12th board exams in the wake of coronavirus — after several teachers refused to show up at the evaluation centres. The government also directed CBSE to promote all the students — from class 1 to 11 — without examinations, except students of 10th grade. This will impact over a million students who were agonising over the postponement of exams and the lack of clarity on dates. "In view of the current situation due to Coronavirus, I have advised CBSE to promote all students studying in classes 1-8 to the next grade," Ramesh Pokhriyal, the HRD Minister tweeted on April 1, 2020.
