The apex body sought an explanation from the ministry on how PUBG is available to be used by minors. This letter comes after the news that a 16-year-old boy from Lucknow shot dead his mother allegedly for trying to prevent him from playing the online video game PUBG, according to police. In 2019, a 15-year-old boy from Bhiwandi in the Thane district of Maharashtra allegedly killed his elder brother for scolding him over playing PUBG Mobile on his phone. Back in 2020, the Union government banned 118 Chinese applications including PUBG Mobile and its other version PUBG Lite. The government said these apps were prejudicial to the sovereignty and integrity of India. The chief of the child rights body, Priyanka Kanoongo wrote a letter to the Union Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology in which she asked, "Why is the game available despite having been legally blocked in the country?" Further, she also added, “It is requested that the commission may be informed regarding action taken in such incidents and be provided with a list of such games which are being used by minors, along with their regulating bodies and regulating mechanism, within 10 days of receipt of this letter.” The NCPCR has also written a second letter to the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), asking them to explain the current status of PUBG. But the Tencent game is trying to hold its ground by promising a ‘healthy gaming experience’.

 Clamour for a wider ban In the one year that PUBG has been in the India, Indian users have spent over $19.65 million on in-game purchases, according to a KPMG report. But, its popularity hasn’t been without consequences. As recently as February, the IT Minister of Goa called the game ‘demonic’ asking for laws to restrict its use in the southern state. Even in Kashmir, the Doctors Association Kashmir (DAK) appealed to parents and teachers to keep kids away from PUBG after students didn’t perform well in their 10th and 12th board exams. The Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) in Tamil Nadu has already banned the game in the boy’s hostel because it was ‘spoiling’ the entire atmosphere. Students reacted on Twitter stating that the ban was creating ‘inhumane college conditions’.

But a nationwide is speculated to be imminent with the the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) issuing a notice to all states of India suggesting that they ban the game — how that ban will successfully be implemented is still unknown. Faced with ban threats, PUBG is trying to placate Indian parents and the government

Player Unknowns Battlegrounds, PUBG, is a popular videogame that has children addicted across the world. However, the violent character of the game has been a huge point of debate. Introduced in early 2018, <keyword id="6409600" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="PUBG-MOBILE">PUBG Mobile</keyword> has become a pop culture phenomenon. The game had hit <a href="https://www.timesnownews.com/technology-science/article/pubg-mobile-india-series-2019-how-to-register-last-date-for-registration-rs-1-crore-prize-money-and-more/352103" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">200 million downloads</a> mark in December last year. The concern has now been escalated to the highest level in India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi took a jibe at the online multiplayer battle game developed and published by PUBG Corporation, a subsidiary of South Korean video game company Bluehole, funded by Chinese technology investor, Tencent. Speaking to children and parents on a scheduled annual conversation-- called Parisksha pe charcha or discussion over exams-- preceding the exam season in India, PM Modi had words of caution. “We need to ask ourselves — is technology turning children into robots or making them more human?” Modi said. The prime minister’s rhetoric was in response to a question from the mother of a ninth grader. Madhumita Sen Gupta from Assam, who lives in Delhi, said, “Earlier he (son) was good in studies but now he is too distracted by online games.” The reference to PUBG was one that the prime minister initiated. “I hold technology in very high regard. But every thing has two sides,” the PM said, adding, “If technology is narrowing us and our thoughts, it will be a big setback. Technology should expand our horizons. To laugh and play in open grounds is very important.” He had advice for the parents too, “Parents and teachers must take interest in the evolution of technology and ask children. It will make children feel comfortable in seeking help.” PUBG was <a href="https://www.digit.in/gaming/china-approves-release-of-80-new-games-but-leaves-out-pubg-mobile-developer-tencent-report-45561.html" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">banned</a> in China in December 2018. And in India, education institutes have already started to take steps to stop children from playing the game. Vellore Institute of Technology, primary schools in Gujarat are some examples. "We are collecting samples (of Nestle's Cerelac baby cereals) from across the country. It will take 15-20 days to complete the process," Food Safety and Standards Authority (FSSAI) CEO G Kamala Vardhana Rao told PTI on the sidelines of an Assocham event on food fortification. FSSAI is a statutory body under the administration of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The move comes following concerns about alleged high sugar content in Nestle's baby food products expressed by both the consumer affairs ministry and the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) after taking note of a global report published by Swiss NGO Public Eye. The global report has claimed that Nestle sold baby products with higher sugar content in less developed South Asian countries including India, Africa and Latin American nations as compared to markets in Europe. However, Nestle India has maintained that it never compromises on compliance and it has reduced added sugar in baby food products in India by up to 30 per cent depending on variants over the past five years. Earlier, addressing the Assocham event, the FSSAI CEO highlighted the importance of food fortification for human health and called for fortification beyond rice to include millets and other alternative foods. FMCG firms have introduced varieties of millet-based products in the last few years and they can further expand the basket of nutritional foods in the country, he added. The CEO also unveiled an Assocham's knowledge report 'Fortifying India's Future: Significance of Food Fortification and Nutrition' on the occasion.
