<ul class="summary-list"><li><strong>Grimes dreamed of becoming a Supreme Court justice, and never thought she'd land in <keyword id="12018329" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="aviation" source="Orion">aviation</keyword>. </strong></li><li><strong>After 'stumbling into aviation,' she now helps shape government policy for the industry. </strong></li></ul><p>While most kids grow up idolizing pop stars and movie stars, as a child growing up in a small town in southern Virginia, Sierra Grimes looked up to Thurgood Marshall. </p><p>"I was just like, 'Oh, my goodness, this man is the holy grail. And guess what? This third grade girl, I'm going to be him. I'm gonna be the first Black female Supreme Court justice,'" Grimes told Insider. "So, I thought I was Ketanji Brown before there was a Ketanji Brown."</p><p>She followed in Marshall's footsteps, attending Howard University in Washington, DC, in 2006 to study political science. But during a college internship with Congresswoman Jo Ann Davis, she realized she didn't want to go to law school. A call with a recruiting agency in 2012 led her to an interview with the National <keyword id="14052810" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="business-aviation" source="Orion">Business Aviation</keyword> Association, at a time when she wasn't sure what "business aviation" meant (the term generally means the use of an <keyword id="11894926" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="airplane" source="Orion">airplane</keyword> for business purposes, such as moving equipment or getting to a meeting).</p><p>"The night before, I'm looking up 'What the heck is business aviation?' because when I think aviation at that time, all I knew was getting on a commercial flight to go on vacation with family," Grimes said. </p><p>Despite her lack of aviation expertise, Grimes landed a job as a registration assistant for <keyword id="14340509" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="nbaa" source="Orion">NBAA</keyword>, the leading trade group representing roughly 11,000 companies that rely on aviation to make their businesses run. After climbing the ranks, she was named senior manager of government affairs for NBAA in March 2021. </p><p>"I'm one of those people that truly stumbled into aviation, and have caught the bug and loved it and plan to stay as long as I can," Grimes told Insider. </p><h2>Fostering the future of business aviation </h2><p>The NBAA was founded in 1947 with the mission to foster growth of business aviation. As senior manager of government affairs, Grimes handles policy work, looking to help pass legislation to enhance the business aviation industry. </p><p>In 2014, just two years into her tenure at NBAA, Grimes helped found its Young Professionals in Business Aviation, or YoPro, program, which helps to recruit and retain the next generation of professionals coming into business aviation. The program started off with networking and providing young people with professional development opportunities, and now includes an advocacy leg meant to foster the importance of advocating for NBAA's mission on the Hill. </p><p>"I've been able to be seen as a thought leader for the next generation and for workforce development, and for diversity, equity, and inclusion, not only in the sense of being a young, Black female working in an industry that's male dominated, but also just coming from different backgrounds and not having the traditional aviation background," Grimes said. </p><h2>Ushering in change for aviation </h2><p>Grimes' favorite part of the job is getting involved with innovation taking place in aviation, such as <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/top-startups-evtol-flying-car-industry-urban-air-mobility-2022-4">advanced air mobility</a>, she told Insider. NBAA is helping to get legislation passed and working with regulators to make sure everything is in place for the nascent industry.</p><p>Though she's certainly faced obstacles in her career, she said she doesn't tend to look at them that way.<br /><br />"I'm really big on perspective. And so an obstacle to me doesn't really mean defeat or failure," she said. "I don't really see a lot of things as an obstacle." </p><h2>Aviation is 'begging and pleading' for diversity </h2><p>Looking to the future, Grimes said she plans to focus on honing her skills as a government affairs professional. </p><p>"I think that switching over to the government affairs side has opened up a new pathway with so much room for growth," she said. </p><p>For young people looking to carve out their own path in aviation, Grimes said now is the time.</p><p>"Whenever I'm talking to young people nowadays, specifically people of a diverse background, I tell them that this is the time to get into this industry. I would say that right now, this industry is literally begging and pleading for diversity," Grimes said. </p><p>Her biggest piece of advice for landing a job in aviation: persistence. </p><p>"You don't have to have the background, per se, in it. But, just go after it," Grimes said. "Be persistent. Have a goal and go after it."</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Private jets boomed during the start of the pandemic as customers sought <keyword id="11896628" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="travel" source="Orion">travel</keyword> perceived as safer.</li><li>Experts say the convenience of private jets and the reduction of airline connectivity also contributed to the surge.</li></ul><p><keyword id="12272456" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="private-aviation" source="Orion">Private aviation</keyword> has boomed since the start of the pandemic as deep-pocket travelers ditch commercial flying for the percieved safety and convenience of private travel.</p><p>With the onset of COVID-19 in 2020, many travelers turned to private <keyword id="12018329" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="aviation" source="Orion">aviation</keyword>, and industry leaders say the exodus from commercial travel stemmed from customers wanting to reduce potential COVID-19 exposure and avoid crowded airports.</p><p>"While the number of touchpoints for a typical airline trip can number 700, flying private can reduce that to just about 30," Alex Fecteau, Boeing Business Jets' director of marketing, <a href="https://www.aopa.org/news-and-media/all-news/2021/october/11/boeing-business-jets-marks-twenty-fifth-anniversary">said at the NBAA Business Aviation Convention and Exhibition in October.</a> "There's a greatly perceived measure of increased safety flying private."</p><p>Meanwhile, Tradewind Aviation co-founder and vice president David Zipkin told Insider that customers want a more convenient and reliable travel experience during a turbulent year full of delays, cancelations, and unruly passengers. He also said airline connectivity has contributed to the switch, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/united-will-stop-flying-to-11-us-cities-indefinitely-list-2021-11">with many carriers scrubbing routes or decreasing frequencies</a>, prompting travelers to opt for <keyword id="12856406" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="private-flying" source="Orion">private flying</keyword>.</p><p>"We are seeing people leave commercial flying for the health and safety, but stay for the convenience," he said.</p><p>Because of the increased interest, mostly from new customers, business aviation take-off and landings in the US are up 40% year-over-year, <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2021/11/26/the-rich-are-getting-richer-and-theyre-fueling-a-private-jet-boom.html">reported CNBC</a>. According to analysts, the trend is attributed to the "wealth boom" that has occurred during the pandemic and widened the customer base.</p><p>"The addressable market right now for business jets has expanded. The pie has gotten bigger," Embraer chief commercial officer Stephen Friedrich said. "And the result is from continued wealth creation of over 12% when you take a look at the billionaires in the world, but also from what was traditionally Fortune 100 and large private companies." </p><p>The surge in business aviation has caused <keyword id="12324783" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="private-jet" source="Orion">private jet</keyword> inventory to drop below 3% for companies like <keyword id="12018327" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="gulfstream" source="Orion">Gulfstream</keyword>, Embraer, Cessna, and Bombardier, according to data from Jefferies Equity Research, reported CNBC.</p><p>"Things are really tight in used <keyword id="12324782" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="business-jet" source="Orion">business jet</keyword> <keyword id="11896919" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="aircraft" source="Orion">aircraft</keyword>, inventories the lowest we've seen in years, and yet prices are 20 to 30% higher," John Schmidt, global aerospace and defense industry lead at consultancy Accenture, told CNBC.</p><p>With the market booming, planemakers see an opportunity for engineering new private jets to meet the growing demand. Here's a look at some of the models and concepts that were introduced in 2021.</p><h2><strong>Dassault Falcon 10X</strong></h2><p><strong></strong></p><div type="image" title="Dassault Falcon 10X" height="1156" width="1541" msid="88622288" hostid="261"></div><p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dassault-falcon-10x-largest-ever-private-jet-features-design-2021-5#and-gulfstreams-g700-which-has-not-yet-achieved-certification-can-fly-7500-nautical-miles-7">French aircraft manufacturer Dassault unveiled its new flagship private jet in May</a>, the Falcon 10X. The plane costs $75 million, can fly over 7,500 nautical miles, and boasts the widest cabin of any competitor. Dassault's Falcon 10X is the largest and widest aircraft the company has ever built, and it <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-dassaults-falcon-10x-will-be-category-killer-coolest-features-2021-7">hopes the long-range plane will stack up to competitors like Gulfstream and Bombardier</a>.</p><h2><strong>Gulfstream G700</strong></h2><p><strong></strong></p><div type="image" title="A Gulfstream G700 Private Jet — Gulfstream G700 Tour 2021" height="1666" width="2223" msid="88622291" hostid="261"></div><p>The G700, which <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gulfstream-debuts-75-million-g700-private-jet-tour-photos-2021-9">Insider's Tom Pallini saw firsthand when it stopped in Doha, Qatar</a> on its world demonstration tour, boasts a large cabin and impressive range. The new $75 million jet can fly up to 7,500 nautical miles and be configured with up to five living spaces with room for 19 passengers. The cabin is wide enough to house a bedroom with a full-size bed, which can be installed instead of an office, as well as an en suite bathroom with an onboard shower.</p><h2><strong>Gulfstream G400</strong></h2><div type="image" title="Gulfstream G400" height="1500" width="1999" msid="88622293" hostid="261"></div><p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gulfstreams-new-private-jets-g400-and-g800-2021-10">Gulfstream unveiled two new next-generation twinjets in October, the first being the large-cabin G400</a>. The plane boasts the largest and quietest cabin in its class with two and a half living areas accommodating up to 12 passengers. The jet also offers the lowest cabin altitude in its class and 10 panoramic windows, which are the largest in the industry.</p><h2><strong>Gulfstream G800</strong></h2><div type="image" title="Gulfstream G800" height="1500" width="1999" msid="88622294" hostid="261"></div><p>The second jet Gulfstream revealed in October was the long-range G800. The aircraft can fly further faster than its predecessors with the help of its 13,496-pound thrust Rolls-Royce engines. The plane can fly up to 8,000 miles at Mach 0.85, which is further than the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, <a href="https://www.boeing.com/commercial/787/">according to Boeing specs</a>. </p><h2><strong>Honda Aircraft Company HondaJet 2600</strong></h2><p><strong></strong></p><div type="image" title="HondaJet 2600" height="724" width="965" msid="88622296" hostid="261"></div><p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/honda-private-jet-concept-first-transcontinental-light-aircraft-2021-10#the-aircraft-will-set-a-handful-of-class-records-including-having-the-highest-flight-ceiling-at-47000-feet-the-highest-cabin-pressurization-at-6363-feet-and-the-tallest-cabin-height-at-5-feet-and-25-inches-5">Honda Aircraft Company revealed its newest private jet concept in October</a>, the HondaJet 2600 that is intended to be the world's first light aircraft capable of nonstop transcontinental flying across the US. The plane will have a range of 2,625 nautical miles and set several records, including the highest flight ceiling, highest cabin pressurization, and the tallest cabin height.</p><h2><strong>Bombardier Challenger 3500</strong></h2><p><strong></strong></p><div type="image" title="Mockup of Challenger 3500." height="734" width="979" msid="88622298" hostid="261"></div><p>Bombardier announced an upgrade to its Challenger 350 private jet in September, naming the new version the Challenger 3500. The mid-sized plane has not had a major update since its 2014 debut, but the manufacturer sees the necessity for a revamped aircraft as the demand for business travel continues to boom, <a href="https://www.reuters.com/business/aerospace-defense/exclusive-bombardier-set-launch-updated-version-challenger-350-private-jet-2021-09-13/">according to Reuters</a>. The plane will have a redesigned cabin and feature undisclosed elements from the company's Global 7500 jet. </p>

As part of the Trump Administration's<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/category/tax-reform" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> tax reform</a> plan which passed in late 2017, <keyword id="34991" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="transportation">transportation</keyword> items such as private jets are now subject to 100% bonus depreciation.</p><p>According to the <a href="https://www.nbaa.org/admin/taxes/depreciation/bonus/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">National Business Aviation Association</a>, this allows a private jet owner to deduct 100% of its cost immediately.</p><p>However, the NBAA is keen to point out that the new policy doesn't entitle private jet buyers to more depreciation, just the ability to access those benefits at a quicker rate. In this case, immediately. </p><p>For some of the world's wealthiest individuals, this deduction accounts for much, if not all, of their millions in tax liability. Which means, for some, the jet is essentially free.</p><p>This is much-welcomed news for an industry on the mend after a couple of tough years.</p><p><span>"Although we are still in a recovering market, this milestone tax reform, complemented by positive economic data and macroeconomic indicators, such as GDP and corporate profits, highly favor new aircraft acquisition," Embraer Executive Jets CEO Michael Amalfitano said in a statement.</span></p><p><span>So will this send the world's billionaires scrambling to buy a private jet or two?</span><span></span></p><p><span>It's still too early to tell, an Embraer spokesman told us. Teal Group vice president and aviation industry analyst Richard Aboulafia agrees.</span></p><p><span>"There's been no historical linkage between bonus depreciation and market strength," Aboulafia said in an interview. "But on the other hand, this is a very generous depreciation offer and the market has been on the cusp of a turnaround for some time."</span></p><p><span>"Maybe this serves as one of the precipitating factors," he added. </span></p><p><span>And then there's General Dynamics, Gulfstream's parent company, which hasn't actually factored in any tax reform driven demand into its projections.</span></p><p><span>"We will see how tax reform plays out, but it frankly didn't factor into our projections," General Dynamics chairman and CEO Phebe Novakovic said during the company's fourth-quarter 2017 earnings call. "We based our plan on the demand that we see and what I've called now for many, many quarters, a robust pipeline." </span></p><p><span>However, Gulfstream did report that the company's flagship G650/G650ER just had its best quarter since 2014. </span></p><p><span>Here's a rough description of <a href="https://www.nbaa.org/admin/taxes/depreciation/bonus/depreciation-rules-2017-tax-act.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">how the new bonus depreciation policy will work</a>. </span><span></span><span></span></p><p><span>According to the NBAA, the 100% bonus depreciation applies to factory-new and pre-owned aircraft. However, it must be the taxpayer's first use of the pre-owned aircraft for it to qualify. </span></p><p>Owners of aircraft that enters service between September 28, 2017, and December 31, 2022, will get to deduct 100% of its cost immediately. However, "certain aircraft" and "longer production period property" are eligible for a one-year extension. That means it can fly non-stop between Sydney and San Francisco or New York and Dubai or London and Singapore.</strong></li></ul><p>Last week, the long-await Bombardier Global 7000 made its air show debut at National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) Conference and Exhibition in Las Vegas, Nevada.</p><p>The Canadian plane maker showed off its fourth and newest Global 7000 prototype, the first with a complete interior. According to Bombardier, flight test vehicle 4 or FTV4 will be used to evaluate the Global 7000's passenger experience including its cabin management and in-flight entertainment systems.</p><p><span>"Our Global 7000 flight test vehicles continue to undergo rigorous testing at our world-class flight test </span>center<span> in Wichita, Kansas," Bombardier vice president of product development, François Caza said in a statement. "Having now flown nearly 900 hours, the aircraft continue to perform extremely well and to exhibit a high level of reliability."</span></p><p><span>"Areas of the flight envelope and the performance of the systems, including at extreme temperatures, have been tested. The results show a maturity which is in full support of the planned certification activities," Caza added.</span></p><p><span>Bombardier is currently preparing the fifth and final flight test vehicle at its factory in Toronto, Canada. </span></p><p><span>The long-delayed Global 7000, a victim of Bombardier's recent financial troubles, is expected to be one of the most capable and expensive private jets in the air with a price tag of $72.8 million. </span></p><p><span>Here's a closer look at the new Bombardier Global 7000:</span></p>

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Robb Report</span></p><p class="caption">Gulfstream G600.</p></div><p></p></div></div>The world of private jets has always been known for over-the-top designs. </p><p>Because it's one of the leading builders of high-end private jets, we figured Gulfstream Aerospace would be the perfect place to find out what the hottest new trend in the industry is.</p><p>According to Tray Crow, Gulfstream's director of interior design, the answer to that question is ... stone. </p><p>Yes: <em>stone</em>.</p><p>Granite flooring, to be specific.</p><p>It seems that the material most commonly associated with kitchen countertops, tile and the facades of old churches has found its way into private jets. </p><p>Traditionally, flooring on Gulfstreams and other private jets has been carpet and in some cases, wood.</p><p>But the trend these days is custom stone veneers.</p><p>For Gulfstream, the ultra-thin granite veneers are imported and installed in the aircraft's galley and bathrooms at one of the company's finishing facilities around the US. </p><p>Stone is just the latest addition to the designer's arsenal of offerings, needed to meet the needs of the company's highly discerning customers. </p><p>"Depending on the client, it can take as much as three to four months to define an interior," Crow said. "They have an intense of focus on the details." </p><p>As far as interior options go, Gulfstream's customers tend to lean towards natural-looking materials."</p><p><span>"People want an environment that's calming and serene," Crow added.
