If you are an aspiring entrepreneur or a wantrepreneur equipped with a dream to create a billion-dollar business in India, one of the IITs is your best bet. 
 Unicorns are <keyword id="6362513" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Startups">startups</keyword> with more than a billion-dollar valuation and the IITs have produced 12 unicorns. 
 
Sage, a UK-based accounting, and payroll company stated this in a research and reinstated the belief that the premier institution is still numero uno for attaining success. 
 
In terms of countries that are home to the most number of unicorns, US tops the list with 144 unicorns, followed by China with 47. India grabbed the third spot with 10.

In the study that lists universities that have produced the most unicorn founders, the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) bagged the fourth spot. 
 US-based <keyword id="101399" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Stanford-University">Stanford University</keyword> claimed the top rank with 51 unicorn founders, followed by <keyword id="97117" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Harvard-University">Harvard University</keyword> with 37. 
 The <keyword id="73593" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="University-of-California">University of California</keyword> came third with 18 unicorn founders and <keyword id="6354859" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT">IIT</keyword> followed with 12 founders. 
 India is home to 10 unicorn companies from e-commerce giants <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword>, <keyword id="541988" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="SnapDeal">Snapdeal</keyword> and ShopClues to cab aggregator Ola, restaurant aggregator Zomato, classified ads platform Quickr, digital payments company <keyword id="6357120" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="PayTM">Paytm</keyword>, mobile ad tech player InMobi, messaging app Hike and analytics company Mu Sigma. 
 Within the various IITs, it is Delhi that produced the maximum unicorn founders. <keyword id="6354867" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sachin">Sachin</keyword> and <keyword id="6364080" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Binny-Bansal">Binny Bansal</keyword> of Flipkart, <keyword id="118292" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sanjay-Sethi">Sanjay Sethi</keyword> of ShopClues, Zomato founders <keyword id="476451" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Deepinder-Goyal">Deepinder Goyal</keyword> and Pankaj Chaddah, Snapdeal's <keyword id="396598" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rohit-Bansal">Rohit Bansal</keyword> and Quikr's <keyword id="1063538" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pranay-Chulet">Pranay Chulet</keyword> and <keyword id="2124885" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jiby-Thomas">Jiby Thomas</keyword> (now founder of <keyword id="4123624" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="webbutterjam-digital">Webbutterjam Digital</keyword>) are all products of <keyword id="57604" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="iit-delhi">IIT Delhi</keyword>.

 Inmobi's founders Naveen Tiwari, Abhay Singhal and <keyword id="75744" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amit-Gupta">Amit Gupta</keyword> studied at IIT Kanpur while their co-founder <keyword id="2682435" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mohit-Saxena">Mohit Saxena</keyword> went to IIT Roorkee.

According to the study, for over 60% of the founders all over the world, the current unicorn company was the only company they had ever built. However, indicating that experience literally pays, the research said those who founded more than one company have, on average, a 34.5% higher valuation than those who founded just one company ($4.29bn vs $5.88bn).

IITs rank fourth among popular universities globally which have produced unicorn founders, according to a report by Sage, a UK-based accounting and payroll company. 
 
In its study “Unicorn League”, the company has recently examinef what these $1 billion companies have in common, the schools which breed the most founders etc. 
 With 51 unicorn founders, <keyword id="33081" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Stanford">Stanford</keyword> tops the chart followed by Harvard (37 founders). 
 At fourth position are IITs with 12 unicorn founders that include <keyword id="225032" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sachin-Bansal">Sachin Bansal</keyword> and <keyword id="6364080" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Binny-Bansal">Binny Bansal</keyword> (<keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword>), Abhay Singhal (InMobi), Ankit Bhati and <keyword id="1543567" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bhavish-Aggarwal">Bhavish Aggarwal</keyword> (Ola), <keyword id="476451" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Deepinder-Goyal">Deepinder Goyal</keyword> (Zomato), <keyword id="1003724" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jyoti-Bansal">Jyoti Bansal</keyword> (AppDynamics), K.V. The study also found that 94% of founders were male, while only 30 of the 498 founders were female. 67% of unicorns were created by co-founders and 33% by single founders. For 60% of the founders, their current unicorn is the first and only company they’ve built. 
 
Also, those who founded more than one company have, on average, a 34.5% higher valuation than those who founded just one company ($4.29 billion versus $5.88 billion). 
 
The US has the most unicorn headquarters (144), followed by China (47) and India (10).The UK (9) leads the pack in Europe, followed by Germany (6). California (95) boasts the most headquarters, followed by New York (19) and Beijing (18). Consumer Internet (49) is the most common unicorn sector, ahead of software (48), e-commerce (37), financial services (22) and healthcare (18).

<ul><li><keyword id="6355041" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="mozilla">Mozilla</keyword>, a known supporter of the open internet, claims that India’s new rules and regulations for online platforms will have ‘disastrous consequences’.</li><li>According to the internet giant, there aren’t enough checks and balances in place to account for over reach.</li><li>Moreover, the rules can’t be followed without breaking end-to-end encryption, which could spell trouble for messaging services such as WhatApp, Signal and Telegram. </li></ul>Internet giant Mozilla, the company behind Firefox browser, has always been a big propagator of the open internet. And, they are not pleased with <keyword id="10861079" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="indias-new-it-rules">India’s new IT Rules</keyword> for social media platforms, OTTs and digital news content. According to Mozilla’s public policy advisor, Udhbav Tiwari, the sudden move will have ‘disastrous consequences’ for the open internet. <div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="81221070" title="Whatsapp, Signal and Telegram face a catch-22 situation as India’s new social media rules threaten encryption" mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div> “By expanding the ‘due diligence’ obligations that intermediaries will have to follow to avail safe harbour, these rules will harm end-to-end encryption, substantially increase surveillance, promote automated filtering and prompt a fragmentation of the internet,” he said in a <a href="https://blog.mozilla.org/netpolicy/2021/03/02/indias-new-intermediary-liability-and-digital-media-regulations-will-harm-the-open-internet/">blog post.</a> Tiwari highlighted six reasons why the new regulations are not going to empower Indians but harm their interests. Their implementation could even lead to unintended consequences on the overall health of the internet, according to him. The rules can’t be followed without breaking end-to-end encryption India’s new IT regulations ask all ‘significant’ social media intermediaries to track down the ‘first originator’. According to Mozilla, this will give platforms like WhatsApp, Signal and Telegram no option but to break end-to-end encryption. That, in turn, harms user interests since it weakens the overall security of the services. “[The rules] contradict the principles of data minimisation endorsed in the Ministry of Electronic and Information Technology’s (MeitY) draft of the <keyword id="4839724" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="data-protection-bill">data protection bill</keyword>,” wrote Tiwari adding that the the aspect of automated filtering of child sexual abuse materials (CSAM), non-consensual sexual acts is also fundamentally incompatible with end-to-end encryption. Making companies embed monitoring infrastructure for surveillance will have ‘disastrous implications’ for the freedom of expression and privacy. Not enough time is provided to verify claims of misuse While a good move in theory, especially if you are one of the victims, it does complicate things on the behalf of the social media platforms. The 36-hour limit for content takedown and the 72-hour window for sharing user data is not enough to analyse requests or seek further clarification, according to Mozilla’s public policy head. “This would likely create a perverse incentive to take down content and share user data without sufficient due process safeguards,” said Tiwari explaining how such a norm would undermine the people’s fundamental right to privacy and freedom of expression. The new laws are against Supreme Court judgement When it comes to revenge porn, deep fakes and other materials that are derogatory, social media platforms are now required to remove the posts within 24 hours. While it is a legitimate issue, Mozilla’s Tiwari points out that it goes against the landmark <a href="https://globalfreedomofexpression.columbia.edu/cases/shreya-singhal-v-union-of-india/">Shreya Singhal judgement</a> by the Supreme Court in 2015. The bench clarified that the companies would only be expected to remove content when told to so directly by a court or government order. They take away all anonymity provided by the Internet ‘Voluntary’ verification, as mandated in India’s new IT rules, is asking social media platforms to provide a voluntary mechanism for users to prove their identity using phone numbers or government-issued IDs. This may create an incentive for the collection of <keyword id="458689" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="personal-data">personal data</keyword>. While the law says nothing about potential misuse, the details can be used to profile and target users. The public has already seen an example of this during Facebook’s <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/topic/Cambridge-Analytica">Cambridge Analytica</a> scandal. And, where there is personal data, there is a great risk of hackers trying to steal it. This will increase the pressure on social media intermediaries — those who can afford it — to step up their cybersecurity. According to Mozilla, more than fighting misinformation, these laws will impede the benefits that anonymity on the internet has to offer, such as whistleblowing and protection from stalkers. There aren’t enough checks and balances against over reach Content has to be removed. There isn’t enough time to check each complaint. And, there’s nothing to keep the government from over reaching, according to Mozilla. It asserts that if the government can issue takedown requests for online news websites, online news aggregators and others — then they can take down anything they deem to be offensive, with only a few checks and balances in place. However, the new rules are not supported by sufficient accountability, says Mozilla. There are no safeguards in place to ensure that the rules themselves will not be misused just to silence opposing opinions, which may not necessarily be a ‘national security’ threat. “Given the many new provisions in these rules, we recommend that they should be withdrawn and be accompanied by wide ranging and participatory consultations with all relevant stakeholders prior to the notification,” said Tiwari. Mozilla is not happy with India's new IT rules claiming there aren't enough checks and balances in place

NEW DELHI | LUCKNOW: The phone rang at around 1 am on Tuesday morning at Ganapati Guest House — a quaint inn by the ghats in <keyword id="6357203" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Varanasi">Varanasi</keyword> — and woke up its manager Nagendra Dubey out of his post-Holi slumber. 
 The caller, from Gujarat, wanted to know if he could accommodate 10 people arriving in the city to campaign for <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword>, BJP's PM candidate. "I had to say 'no', as this is a small place and we are fully booked. 
 
I suggested a few places near the cantonment and hung up… but I got a similar call this morning — from Hyderabad — asking for rooms," Dubey said. 
 Varanasi, Narendra Modi's constituency and possibly <keyword id="260213" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Arvind-Kejriwal">Arvind Kejriwal</keyword>'s too, is set to witness boom times as thousands descend on the city, volunteering either for BJP's Modi or <keyword id="6354944" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Aam-Aadmi-Party">Aam Aadmi Party</keyword>'s Kejriwal. Social media is acting, predictably, as a force multiplier in rush of political tourists to Varanasi. 
 On <keyword id="6354616" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Twitter">Twitter</keyword> #ChaloVaranasi is already trending. Entrepreneur Naveen James, for instance, says there are at least 70-80 people on Twitter and in different groups on the site who he knows are planning a trip. "The idea is to spread the message through the 40-odd days left," he says. He himself has packed his bags to leave on Thursday for a week, after which he will head to Kerala to spread the message there. 
 <keyword id="6356115" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="AAP">AAP</keyword> supporters too trooping in 
 "The idea is to explain Modi's development agenda and its benefits to villagers," says entrepreneur Naveen James. Like him, hundreds of Modi supporters from across the country, and outside — from <keyword id="30033" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Bihar">Bihar</keyword>, Nagaland, Gujarat, Gurgaon and Kenya — especially Namo's young admirers are planning to descend on the city to seek support from locals for their PM nominee. At the same time, thousands of people who do not want Modi to be PM are also on their way — many AAP supporters from places such as Odisha and Maharashtra, who campaigned for Kejriwal during the Delhi assembly polls, are among them. 
 Santosh Tiwari, who runs an ice cream business in Mombasa, Kenya, has planned a one-month sabbatical from his business to come down to Varanasi. Also on his agenda is a trip to south India. "A few of us plan to backpack and hitchhike through the constituency and in south India for a month, spreading the message to choose the right candidate," says Tiwari, who also doubles up as an international steel trader. These volunteers will join a barrage of party workers, sociologists and journalists who would be part of the stellar battle between a PM aspirant and a possible giant killer, who defeated the incumbent chief minister of Delhi <keyword id="5267" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Sheila-Dikshit">Sheila Dikshit</keyword> during the assembly elections in December. 
 
These 'political tourists' are good for the city and Varanasi's hoteliers and local businesses are already excited by this sudden influx. At the end of the tourist season, this is extended business for them. "Business will grow 100%. Modi's supporters will come in large numbers and they would need space to stay. It will be like an extended tourist season," says the manager at Pratap Palace, a hotel at the town-centre. He didn't want to be named. 
 
Taxi operators are too are enthused by the big business they are likely to get when the Modi and Kejriwal bandwagons descend on to the city in the next few days. Pratik Singh of Ganges Travels says he is expecting business to boom in the days ahead as the election campaign picks up. "Hordes of party workers and volunteers of BJP and supporters of Arvind Kejriwal are expected to start arriving in the next two-three days. There will be huge demand for taxis and we have geared up to cater to their needs," he says. So far, Team Modi has a definitive head-start. 
 
Sandeep Srivastava, who works with an MNC in Gurgaon, has been working with his friends on voter registration for the past two months. He has managed to spare 10-15 days after the elections in Delhi are over (since he has a vote in Delhi) for a trip to the holy city where he wants to go door-to-door. 
 
Outside of Varanasi city as well, there are there are volunteers who are spreading the Modi message in villages. A group of volunteers, organised under the hashtag #TeamKashi, is visiting villages and going to doorsteps. Temsutala Imsong from Mokokchung, Nagaland, took a break from her job at an MNC and has been talking to women in villages in the constituency. "There is a lot of fervor. They want to vote for Modi," she says. 
 Shiv Mishra, who runs an agro-commodities business in <keyword id="6354925" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Kolkata">Kolkata</keyword> but is originally from Varanasi, spends three days a week in the constituency. "My advantage is that I can converse with villagers around here in their dialect. I tell them about the infrastructure that I have seen in Gujarat and how it has made lives and businesses better," says Mishra. 
 
A hotelier in Varanasi says he heard a rumour that 400 vans are to travel from Gujarat to Varanasi packed with Modi supporters. While it is good for business, what they can't understand is how the old city's roads will manage them. "If all of them really come into the city, it will be difficult to move here. There will be massive traffic jams," says the hotelier. 
 
AAP's Kejriwal is holding a rally in the city on March 25 and that too will add to both business and chaos in the city, says locals. AAP's eastern UP secretary Anshul Srivastava, based out of Varanasi, says, "Our team members will start arriving from tomorrow (Wednesday). But obviously, the focus is on reaching out to people of Varanasi."
