The US coronavirus response is a national disgrace

"Hemant ji came out, there was an appeal to stop his bail but it was dismissed. Kejriwal ji was released for less than a month. Now though he has been given a bail there is a conspiracy to keep him in jail," he said. "It is a conspiracy to finish a democratically elected government and a political party," Bhattacharya said, urging the people to give their reply to the BJP in upcoming assembly polls in Haryana, Maharashtra and Jharkhand by defeating the BJP. "The recent mandate has proved that people won't tolerate tyranny. We will ensure justice,"he added. Communist Party of India general secretary D Raja also demanded the immediate release of the Delhi chief minister, and expressed concerns about his health. "After BJP's coming to power, democracy is no longer 'for' the people, democracy is 'far' from people, democracy is not 'of' the people, it is 'off' the people, and it is not 'by' the people, it is 'buy' the people," Raja said. "Kejriwal is one of the victims of the central agencies used by the Modi government. Can we allow this? How much longer can we tolerate this situation in the country. Kejriwal is not well and his health has deteriorated," he said. AAP Delhi convener Gopal Rai said Kejriwal's sugar levels are going down in custody. "He was granted bail by trial court and Supreme Court but a conspiracy was hatched to keep him in jail. Why does BJP want to put opposition leaders in jail? Who is responsible for the deaths of the three UPSC aspirants?" Rai said. "When LG is being asked about the incident, he is quiet. The BJP, which is demanding Kejriwal's resignation, snatched away the powers of the Delhi government. They want rights but run away when they are held accountable," he charged. has been accusing the BJP of "conspiring to kill" Kejriwal in jail and cited his medical report to show that his sugar levels have fallen 34 times between June 3 and July 7. The arrest of Kejriwal in an illegal and unconstitutional manner indicate nothing but the bad intentions of the BJP," he alleged. Tiwari said it was "height" of inhumanity to keep Kejriwal in jail despite his medical reports showing dip in his blood sugar to a dangerous level. The Congress and AAP had fought the recent Lok Sabha elections in Delhi in alliance. AAP had fielded candidates on four seats and Congress on three seats. However, the alliance drew a blank. Gogoi warned the BJP and its leaders saying they cannot scare the opposition whether it is AAP, Congress or any other party. "Their illusion lies shattered with this rally. If fair Lok Sabha elections had been held in 2024, the BJP would have been in opposition and we would have been in power. The BJP-led government is not going to complete its five-year term," he stressed. Kejriwal was arrested on March 21 by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in a money laundering case linked to the alleged excise policy scam and has been granted bail by the Supreme Court. However, he is currently lodged in Tihar in a connected CBI case.

New Delhi, Dec 17 () The textiles ministry has sought suggestions for formulating the much-awaited new National Textile Policy for the next 10 years, which will envisage positioning India as a fully integrated, globally-competitive manufacturing and exporting hub.
 The policy will entail the strategy and action plan for the country's textile and apparel sector.
 Last month, Textiles Minister Smriti Irani said in the Rajya Sabha that the Centre is considering formulation of the National Textiles Policy after consultations with states.
 The formulation of the new policy has been under consideration for some time now. In 2016, then textiles minister Santosh Gangwar had said the new policy will envisage creation of additional 35 million jobs.
 The existing National Textile Policy 2000 was framed about 13 years ago. Since then, the industry has undergone various changes on the domestic and international front. The domestic textile industry has seen large-scale modernisation and technological up-gradation in the last decade and faces new challenges.
 "The Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, is in the process of formulating a New Textile Policy for the next decade. This will include vision to position India as a fully integrated, globally competitive manufacturing and exporting hub, strategy and action plan for Indian textile and apparel sector," according to the ministry's website. <ul class="summary-list"><li>An air traffic controller in Australia was found asleep under a blanket at the end of a shift.</li><li>He had worked seven night shifts in nine days due to staffing changes, a safety investigation found.</li></ul>An air traffic controller at a major Australian airport was found asleep at the end of their night shift while they were the only person on duty, according to an investigation by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB).The worker had signed on for their night shift, which ran from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., at the Brisbane Centre, a major <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/becoming-air-traffic-controller-career-pros-cons-of-job-2022-1">air traffic control center</a> in Brisbane Airport.Brisbane is Australia's third-busiest airport, handling around 22.6 million passengers annually. It has consistently been among the 100 busiest airports in the world and was ranked <a target="_blank" href="https://www.worldairportawards.com/worlds-top-100-airports-2024/">as the world's 32nd-best by Skytrax in 2024</a>.On December 9, 2022, the morning shift controller arrived at work at 5:15 a.m. to find their night shift counterpart asleep at the console.The worker was discovered lying across two chairs with a blanket covering them, according to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.atsb.gov.au/sites/default/files/2024-09/AO-2022-065%20%28Final%29.pdf">the report</a>. They were still wearing their headset, and the air situation display (ASD) screensaver was on.After ensuring there was no traffic in the area, the station was handed over to the oncoming controller.The report noted that the Brisbane Centre building was cooler at night, and it was considered normal practice for blankets to be used during night shifts.The ATSB's report blamed multiple night shifts in a short space of time, the worker's low workload, and an ineffective risk management system for the incident. It noted that the worker had 10 years of experience as a controller and had been in their current position for three years. However, due to last minute roster changes, they had worked their seventh night shift in nine days and had not taken the recommended rest period in between.There had been no traffic or scheduled flights in the airspace the controller was responsible for and a system supervisor had been on duty at the front desk of the center.However, the report found that cumulative fatigue was not being effectively managed at the center."Likely due to an underlying lack of resources within Airservices Australia, there was an over-reliance on tactical changes to manage the roster," investigators said.The ATSB said it would update its safety procedures and fatigue risk management regulations in response to the incident.Airservices Australia, which runs the Brisbane Centre, has increased the overall number of air traffic controllers and enhanced internal processes since the incident, according to the report. The ATSB will continue to monitor the issue.In the US, fatigue has been a growing safety concern as <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/airport-collision-close-call-solutions-sleep-runways-air-traffic-controllers-2024-2">shortages of air traffic controllers</a> have driven up the amount of overtime required for those that remain. Some controllers have turned to <a target="_blank" rel="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/air-traffic-controllers-workload-stress-alcohol-drugs-faa-close-calls-2023-12">alcohol and sleeping pills</a> to cope with their grueling schedules.Last year, The New York Times found that <a target="_blank" rel="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/airline-close-calls-happening-multiple-times-nyt-investigation-2023-8">near-misses between aircraft</a> were happening more often than previously thought.Airservices Australia did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider, sent outside regular Australian working hours.

By Lalit K Jha Washington, May 5 () A group of Democratic senators have said that there has been a surge in the hate crime against the Asian-Americans amid the coronavirus pandemic and urged the Trump administration to take concrete steps to arrest the spike in such incidents.In a letter to Assistant Attorney General Eric S Dreiband, the 16 senators, including first Indian-origin senator Kamala Harris, requested the Trump administration to address this discrimination like it had been done in the past. The senators said hate crimes against Asian-Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs) during the pandemic and the inadequate federal response to address these racist and xenophobic attacks is a sharp break from the efforts of past administrations, Republican and Democratic alike.There are more than 20 million Americans of Asian descent and two million AAPI individuals are working on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic, as health care workers, law enforcement agents, first responders, and other essential service providers, they said."It is critical that the Civil Rights Division ensure that the civil and constitutional rights of all Americans are protected during this pandemic," the senators said.In the last month alone, Asian American organisations received nearly 1,500 incidents of anti-Asian harassment and discrimination against AAPI individuals across the country, they said.This comes after the FBI assessed in March that hate crime incidents against Asian Americans were likely to surge across the country, endangering AAPI communities, the Democratic senators said.They said on March 14 this year, a man stabbed two Asian American children -- aged 2 and 6 -- and their father at a Sam's Club in Texas because "he thought the family was Chinese, and infecting people with the coronavirus."Despite warnings that using offensive and stigmatising language to refer to COVID-19 could stoke anti-Asian bias, President Trump and his administration's officials have referred to the coronavirus as the "Chinese Virus," "Wuhan Virus," and at least one White House official even called it the "Kung Flu," the lawmakers rued."Such harmful rhetoric contradicts guidance by public health experts," they said.The World Health Organization's guidance in naming infectious diseases warns against using names that stigmatize certain communities, the senators said.The Centres for Disease Control and Prevention also recognizes the "stigma and discrimination that can occur when people associate a disease, such as COVID-19, with a population or nationality," they said.
