The National Tsunami Warning Center also reported there was no risk of a tsunami.&#xa0;</li><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/?hprecirc-bullet">Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.</a></li></ul><p>A 5.0-magnitude earthquake impacted southeast Alaska and northern Canada on Saturday night, marking the second time in just two days the region was affected by one.</p><p>The Alaska Earthquake Center, the state's earthquake monitoring agency that's based at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, <a href="https://twitter.com/AKearthquake/status/1168022660380418048">tweeted</a> the earthquake originated in Glacial Bay National Park at 8:32 pm local time. The agency said it had received reports that those in Juneau, the state capital, and Whitehorse, the capital of Canada's Yukon territory, felt it.&#xa0;</p><p>The National Tsunamai Warning Center, which is located in Alaska, tweeted out that a <a href="https://twitter.com/NWS_NTWC/status/1168019834027696131">tsunami was not expected</a>. According to the <a href="https://www.adn.com/alaska-news/2019/09/01/51-earthquake-rattles-southeast-alaska-and-yukon/">Anchorage Daily News</a>, no damage or injuries were immediately reported.&#xa0;</p><p><a href="http://www.geo.mtu.edu/UPSeis/magnitude.html">According to UPSeis</a>, an education site on seismology created by Michigan Technological University, a 5- to 5.9-magnitude earthquake is considered moderate. Earthquakes of 2.5- to 5.4-magnitude are "often felt, but only cause minor damage" with an estimated 30,000 a year occurring.&#xa0;</p><p>It was the second earthquake to hit the region in the last two days. A 3.8-magnitude earthquake had originated from a nearby location, the Alaska Earthquake Center tweeted. The earthquake hit at 8:45 am today morning and measured 6.0 on the richter scale according to India’s National Center for Seismology.<br /><br />But there’s no threat of a tsunami. <br /><br />The Indian National Center for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) stated that the earthquake shouldn’t result in a tsunami because it didn’t result in a rise in sea levels.<br /><br />Officials have also reported that there were no immediate reports of loss of life or even damage to property. But, the localities did feel the tremors. <br /><br /><strong>Prone to <keyword id="792115" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="seismic-activity">seismic activity</keyword><br /></strong><br />The Andaman and Nicobar islands are prone to seismic activity. It was even witness to <a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/india/india-news-india/12-earthquakes-jolt-andaman-nicobar-islands-in-24-hrs/">12 earthquakes</a> over the span of 24 hours on November 9, 2015 — all going measuring 5 or more on the richter scale. <br /><br />The largest earthquake recorded in the area was in December 2005 that hit the North Indian Ocean and the Bay of Bengal. The Andaman and Nicobar were the worst hit territory in India reporting a loss of 4,486 people.<br /><br />This is all because it’s located near the boundary of the Indian plate and the Burmese microplate marked by the Andaman Trench. <br /><br />The north-east end of Port Blair is also home to the only volcanoes in India — the Barren Island Volcano and Narcondam.<br />

Established in 1979, the USGS has major offices across the country that focus on policies related to Earth sciences including risk from earthquakes and damage from fracking.</p><p>In a rare event, the governemnt-run scientific agency published a <a href="https://www.facebook.com/USGeologicalSurvey/posts/955479124498071:0">public statement</a> on Oct. 20 refuting NASA's report and asserting their own <a href="http://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/2015/3009/">independent estimates</a>, which suggests an 85% probability for a magnitude-5.0 earthquake to hit the same region. The refute reads as follows:</p><p>USGS Statement on JPL La Habra Study in the news:</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">This paper claims a 99.9% probability of an earthquake of magnitude 5 or greater occurring in the next 3 years within a large area of Southern California without providing a clear description of how these numbers were derived. The area-a 100 km radius circle centered on the city of La Habra-is a known seismically active area. For this same area, the community developed and accepted model of earthquake occurrence, "UCERF3", which is the basis of the USGS National Seismic Hazard Maps, gives a 3-year probability of 85%. <strong>In other words, the accepted random chance of a M5 or greater in this area in 3 years is 85%, independent of the analysis in this paper.</strong></p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">While the earthquake forecast presented in this paper has been published in the online journal Earth and Space Sciences, <strong>it has not yet been examined by the long-established committees that evaluate earthquake forecasts and predictions made by scientists.</strong> These committees, the California Earthquake Prediction Evaluation Council, which advises the California Office of Emergency Services, and the National Earthquake Prediction Evaluation Council, which advises the U.S. Geological Survey, were established to provide expert, independent assessment of earthquake predictions.</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>The earthquake rate implied by the 99.9% probability is significantly higher than observed at any time previously in Southern California</strong>, and the lack of details on the method of analysis makes a critical assessment of this approach very difficult. Therefore, the USGS does not consider the analysis presented in this paper a reason to change our assessment of the hazard.</p><p>Scientists at the USGS are not the only ones who questioned the paper's results. Thomas Heaton, a professor of engineering seismology and the director of the Earthquake Engineering Research Laboratory at Caltech, recently told the <a href="http://www.sgvtribune.com/general-news/20151020/big-earthquake-chances-high-for-los-angeles-county-fault-jpl-scientists-study-says">San Gabriel Valley Tribune</a>:</p><p>"While the authors are credible scientists, this paper does not meet my definition of <keyword id="41551" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="science">science</keyword>.
