I don't know how many others <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/americans-who-left-us-because-of-trump-talk-biden-presidency-2020-12">followed through on that declaration</a>, but I did. Trump won the election, and 9 months later, I left the US. Full disclosure: Trump becoming president was not the only reason I left — it was also about being fed up with my corporate job, coupled with a strong desire to explore the world. I was 37, single, with no children or pets, so I was free to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/working-mom-quit-job-expat-move-abroad-qatar-singapore-2023-12">quit my job</a>, uproot myself, and take off. I did own a house at the time, which I sold a few months after I left. Upon my departure, I didn't have much of a plan other than the intention to spend some time slowly exploring Asia and teaching English when I needed to make money. I swam in the crystal clear waters of the Maldives, visited healers in <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/american-family-kids-bali-decompress-relocate-slow-life-work-remote-2024-10">Bali</a>, witnessed breathtaking sunrise views from mountaintops in Laos, went island-hopped through the Philippines, rode motorbikes around Thailand's islands, and discovered ancient pagodas in Myanmar The cost of living in much of Asia is so low that savings can stretch a long way. I have high standards for my accommodations, and while traveling, I usually spent around $20 to $25 per night on hotels. Lower-maintenance friends of mine found simpler places for $6 per night in India. Meals usually cost around $3. After six weeks in India, I considered a lunch bill of $5 to be expensive. <h2>There have been times along the way when I've felt lost </h2>From time to time, I experienced stretches of feeling <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/relocation-moved-to-milan-living-abroad-emotionally-exhausting-unspoken-truths-2023-9">unsettled and lacking a sense of purpose</a>. Over the years, I learned that those periods of doubt and uncertainty will continue to surface. But I also learned to just keep trusting, and the way forward would eventually reveal itself. I never was — except a couple of times in India when riding on some precariously high Himalayan roads with no guardrails. But of people? I never had a reason to be. After a year away, I found an opportunity to teach yoga in a small mountain town in Myanmar. Life there was quiet, simple, and beautiful. I lived there for 9 months, and I was profoundly happy most of the time. But there were times <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/loneliness-how-to-make-friends-remote-worker-freelancer-new-city-2024-2">I felt lonely</a>. The locals were sweet and kind, with love in their eyes and actions, but I missed friends who spoke my language fluently, with whom I could have deep conversations over a glass of wine. And the dating scene? I fell in love with the town, the quality of life, and the locals. It was easy to get a tourist or work visa to live here long term, and it was almost as inexpensive as India and Myanmar. I was living in Siem Reap when COVID-19 hit. By that time, I was in a <keyword id="20752574" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="long-distance-relationship" source="keywords">long-distance relationship</keyword> with a French man I met during my travels. After the closed borders of the pandemic kept us apart for 7 months, I moved to France to be with him. Our story was long and winding, but it felt like destiny. Since then, she's had compounding health concerns, including neuropathy, stage 3 kidney disease, and anemia.For most of her life, Jolly was insured through her ex-husband's employment. But when they <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/divorced-boomers-lower-retirement-savings-401ks-social-security-income-2024-10">divorced</a> in 2021, she lost that coverage."I was probably near tears every day, wondering what in the world I was going to do," she said.Jolly enrolled in the ACA marketplace the following year and qualified for enhanced premium tax credits, which aim to reduce the price of health insurance purchased through the ACA marketplace. She pays $96 monthly for healthcare coverage, according to documents reviewed by Business Insider."I just remember being extremely grateful and almost astounded that there was something out there that was going to help me be able to afford health insurance," she said.Jolly is among the millions of Americans who use the enhanced premium tax credits to afford healthcare coverage and who could see costs rise next year if the subsidies expire.According to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/millions-americans-lose-health-insurance-subsidies-congress-presidential-election-2024-9">19.7 million ACA enrollees</a> qualified for enhanced premium tax credits this year, which is 92% of all ACA enrollees. Additionally, the enhanced premium tax credits cut consumers' costs by about 44%, saving the average enrollee $705 annually, according to a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.kff.org/affordable-care-act/issue-brief/inflation-reduction-act-health-insurance-subsidies-what-is-their-impact-and-what-would-happen-if-they-expire/">report</a> published on July 26 by KFF, a nonprofit health policy group.The subsidies were introduced in 2021 as a temporary measure and expanded eligibility to include enrollees with incomes above 400% of the federal poverty line — which is $60,240 for one individual and $124,800 for a family of four. In 2022, the Inflation Reduction Act extended the subsidies through the end of 2025.According to a Center on Budget and Policy Priorities analysis shared with Business Insider, without the enhanced premium tax credits, Jolly's monthly payments could increase to $275, a roughly 186% jump."It would just have an enormous negative impact on my life," Jolly said.<h2 id="4569c228-efc2-46ce-bac2-07c53459536a">Subsidies helped Jolly afford healthcare coverage</h2>Jolly lives in Steubenville, Ohio — a city about 30 miles west of Pittsburgh — with her 24-year-old daughter, Jessica. Jolly bought a small house in September 2023, using the funds she received from her divorce settlement.Jolly receives a monthly spousal settlement payment, which is her only income. Due to her health complications, Jolly said she is unable to retain a full-time job. She said she is trying to land a part time job as a teaching assistant, but her health issues mean she is often faint and unable to concentrate for extended hours.Jolly said she isn't eligible for many social safety nets. Additionally, she said she's burned through her savings."I'm struggling," Jolly said. "When I combine rising grocery costs with rising insurance costs, it just becomes almost unbearable."<h2 id="ec005901-4bba-4522-bd8a-c2e31c9f82d3">The subsidies expiration could pose difficulties for millions of Americans</h2>The results of the November election could determine the fate of the enhanced subsidies. On September 25, Democratic Senators Jeanne Shaheen and Tammy Baldwin introduced the Health Care Affordability Act, which would make permanent enhanced premium tax credits. Rep. Lauren Underwood, another Democrat, introduced an identical bill in the House.The bills would have to pass both the Senate and the House and then be signed into law by the president to come into effect. It's <a target="_blank" rel=" nofollow" class="" href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/health/2024/09/25/aca-health-plan-subsidies/">unclear when a decision</a> on the tax credits will be reached.Republican lawmakers oppose the subsidies' cost to taxpayers. The Congressional Budget Office and Joint Committee on Taxation <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cbo.gov/system/files/2024-06/60437-Arrington-Smith-Letter.pdf">estimate</a> that making the policy permanent would increase the budget deficit by $335 billion over the next 10 years.Cynthia Cox, a vice president at KFF, previously <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/millions-americans-lose-health-insurance-subsidies-congress-presidential-election-2024-9">told</a> Business Insider that Congress might end up with a divided House and Senate after the election, making it difficult to pass a bill."There's a pretty significant chance that there's going to be a divided power in Washington, and then it's really anyone's guess what happens to these subsidies, but it would probably be an uphill battle to renew them," Cox said.The Congressional Budget Office estimates that 3.8 million people could become uninsured if the enhanced subsidies expire, according to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.reuters.com/business/finance/rate-us-uninsured-rise-89-next-decade-congressional-budget-office-says-2024-06-18/#:~:text=Enhanced%20subsidies%20for%20plans%20introduced,the%20expiration%20of%20marketplace%20subsidies.">Reuters</a>.For enrollees like Jolly, the hundreds of dollars saved each month have been crucial to affording coverage."If we didn't have them, I don't know how I would have survived day-to-day," Jolly said. "It just would have meant total ruin for myself, and I'm not even talking economically, but I mean health-wise, too."

As many as 290 cases of <keyword id="21545939" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="KP-2" source="keywords">KP.2</keyword> and 34 cases of <keyword id="21748081" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="KP-1" source="keywords">KP.1</keyword>, both sub-lineages of COVID-19 that are responsible for surge in cases in Singapore, have been found in India, according to official data. However, a source in the Union health ministry told PTI that they are all sub variants of <keyword id="20115417" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="JN1" source="keywords">JN1</keyword> and there is no associated increase in hospitalisation and severe cases. "So there is no reason for concern or panic. The mutations will keep happening at a rapid pace and this is the natural behaviour of viruses like SARS-CoV2," the source said. The source further said that the INSACOG surveillance is sensitive and is able to pick up the emergence of any new variant and samples are also picked from hospitals in a structured manner to detect any change in the severity of disease due to virus. Data compiled by the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG) showed that 34 cases of KP.1 have been found across seven states and UTs with 23 cases registered from West Bengal. The other states are Goa (1), Gujarat (2), Haryana (1), Maharashtra (4) Rajasthan (2) and Uttarakhand (1). As many as 290 cases of KP.2 have been registered with Maharashtra reporting the highest number at 148, according to the data. The other states and Union territories are Delhi (1), Goa (12), Gujarat (23), Haryana (3), Karnataka (4), Madhya Pradesh (1), Odisha (17), Rajasthan (21), Uttar Pradesh (8), Uttarakhand (16) and West Bengal (36). Incidence of stroke and related deaths are rising substantially around the world, with <keyword id="19900550" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="air-pollution" source="keywords">air pollution</keyword>, <keyword id="21334318" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="high-temperatures" source="keywords">high temperatures</keyword> and metabolic risk factors such as high blood pressure and physical inactivity, driving these increases, according to estimates published in The Lancet Neurology journal. Researchers found that the contribution of high temperatures to poor health and early death due to stroke has increased 72% since 1990 and is likely to continue increasing in the future, thereby highlighting how environmental factors can impact growing stroke burden. Further, for the first time, particulate matter or PM air pollution was found to have the same contribution as smoking towards causing a fatal form of brain bleed, according to the researchers forming the <keyword id="20691740" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Global-Burden-of-Disease" source="keywords">Global Burden of Disease</keyword>, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) group. The GBD study, the "largest and most comprehensive effort to quantify health loss across places and over time", is coordinated by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME), University of Washington, US. Globally, the number of people experiencing a stroke for the first time rose to 119 lakh in 2021 -- up by 70% since 1990 -- while deaths related to stroke rose to 73 lakh, which was up by 44% since 1990, making the neurological condition the third leading cause of death after ischaemic heart disease (short supply of blood to heart) and COVID-19. They added that over three-fourth of those affected by strokes live in low- and middle-income countries. According to lead author Valery L. Feigin from Auckland University of Technology, New Zealand, the rapid growth in the number of people affected by stroke strongly suggested that <keyword id="23228151" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="stroke-prevention" source="keywords">stroke prevention</keyword> strategies currently used are not sufficiently effective. "New, proven effective population-wide and motivational individual prevention strategies that could be applied to all people at risk of having a stroke, regardless of the level of risk, as recommended in the recent Lancet Neurology Commission on Stroke should be implemented across the globe urgently," said Feigin. The researchers also estimated that stroke-related liabilities attributable to 23 modifiable risk factors, including air pollution, excess body weight, high blood pressure, smoking and physical inactivity, increased from 100 million years of healthy life lost in 1990 to 135 million in 2021. These risk factors are present in huge numbers in Eastern Europe, Asia and sub-Saharan Africa, they said. The authors also acknowledged substantial progress made in reducing the global stroke burden from risk factors linked to poor diet, air pollution and smoking. Poor health resulting from diets high in processed meat and low in vegetables declined by 40 % and 30%, respectively, while that due to PM air pollution and smoking fell by 20 % and 13%, respectively, they found. The results suggested that strategies for reducing exposure to these risk factors over the past three decades such as clean air zones and public smoking bans have been successful, the authors said. They called for implementing and monitoring the evidence-based recommendations set out in the 2023 World Stroke Organization-Lancet Neurology Commission on stroke for drastically reducing the global burden of stroke in the years to come and improving brain health and overall well-being of millions of people around the world. The recommendations include stroke surveillance programmes that monitor indicators of stroke such as incidence, recurrence, death rates and risk factors in a country, and care and rehabilitation services for people affected by stroke.

"Flexible co-living," or dormitory-style apartments where residents share kitchen, bathroom, laundry and living spaces, could be a more efficient path to converting unused space, according to a study published Tuesday by the Pew Charitable Trusts and design firm Gensler It's "an innovative approach to the office-to-residential conversion market—one that is scalable and poised to facilitate meaningful, long-term transformation in these cities and the lives of its residents," said Wes LeBlanc, Principal and Strategy Director at Gensler.The report comes as companies reevaluate their need for office space in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. With many workers still remote or in hybrid positions, office vacancies have climbed. The national office vacancy rate is set to rise to around 20% by the end of this year, according to commercial real estate firm CBRE.At the same time, the US faces a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-housing-affordability-home-shortage-market-construction-population-cities-zillow-2024-6">housing supply problem</a>, with the country short between 2.3 million and 6.5 million units, according to <a target="_blank" href="http://Realtor.com">Realtor.com</a> data. Shared spaces, meanwhile, will cover the middle of each floor.They say such a setup would lower construction costs by 25%-35% compared to traditional office conversions, which would allow for lower rents that would be affordable for those earning well below the area's median income.The report suggests this setup looks especially promising in three cities—Denver, Minneapolis and Seattle— where soaring office vacancy rates, high median rents, and minimal local regulatory barriers provide an ideal backdrop for office conversions to co-living spaces.In an example mapped out for Seattle, where the downtown office vacancy rates average 30%, the study propsed a 120 square foot unit outfitted with a bed, desk, microwave, and refrigerator. Therefore, more robust epidemiological research is needed to clarify the role of allergy in the development of long Covid, said researchers. The new findings, published in Clinical &amp; Experimental Allergy, were based an analysis of 13 studies, published between January 1, 2020 and January 19, 2023. The analysis included a total of 9,967 participants of all ages with confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection who were followed for at least 12 months. Four of the 13 studies provided estimates on the association between pre-existing allergic conditions such as asthma or hay fever and long Covid. Pre-existing asthma was associated with an increased risk of long Covid, but the evidence was very uncertain, the authors said. The odds ratio (OR) for preexisting asthma and long Covid was 1.94. In an analysis of three studies that included data on preexisting allergic rhinitis, the condition was significantly associated with an increased risk of long Covid. Only 3 of the 13 studies measured long Covid with physical examinations and comprehensive questionnaires, the authors cautioned. Moreover, among the 13 studies, the researchers found a high risk of bias due to patient selection (mostly hospitalised patients) and loss to follow-up. "We need a better, harmonised definition of what is considered long Covid for epidemiological studies of this sort.
