New Delhi, Feb 19 () The government on Wednesday approved major changes in the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) making it optional for farmers with a view to plug loopholes in the farm insurance scheme. Under the PMFBY, which was launched in February 2016 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, it is mandatory for loanee farmers to take insurance cover under this scheme. Currently, 58 per cent of the total farmers are loanee. The Union Cabinet has approved many changes in the PMFBY programme as farmers' body and states were raising some concerns, Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar told reporters here. The minister said the PMFBY scheme has been made optional. Highlighting the achievements of this scheme, Tomar said the insurance programme has covered 30 per cent of cultivable area. The minister said insurance claims worth Rs 60,000 crore have been cleared, while Rs 13,000 crore premiums have been collected. NKD MJH CS HRS

New Delhi, Feb 7 () Few incidence of suspected open cultivation of banned Bt brinjal and aherbicide-tolerant (HT) variety of cotton were reported in five states, including Maharashtra and Gujarat, Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar said in Parliament on Friday. Bt cotton is the only Genetically Modified (GM) crop approved in 2002 by the government for commercial farming in the country and, therefore, cultivation of other unapproved GM crops are banned in India, he added. In his written reply to the Rajya Sabha, the Minister said "Few incidences of suspected open cultivation of Bt brinjal and HT cotton were reported in Maharashtra, Haryana, Punjab, Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh." The Agriculture Ministry has issued advisories to states to take appropriate necessary action to curb and control the spread of Bt. brinjal and HT cotton, he said. "State governments have given the directions to all district administration to take necessary legal steps to curb the production and selling of illegal GM crops for farming," he added. LUX LUX MRMR

New Delhi, Mar 28 () Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar on Saturday said farming operations and related activities have been exempted from the lockdown rules for smooth harvesting of rabi crops and to ensure food security in the country."At this critical time, the exemptions have been given for agriculture related activities to ensure enough food supply to the people after the lockdown. It is also done to ensure ordinary citizens and farmers do not face problems," Tomar said in a statement.To ensure that farmers do not face problems in harvesting, the Centre has directed concerned ministries and state governments to follow the exemptions strictly, he added.Tomar said exemptions for farm activities were given after he raised the concerns of farmers and farm organisation with the Home Ministry.On March 27, the government exempted farming operations, farm workers, custom hiring centres of farm harvesters and implements as well as mandis and procurement agencies from the lockdown rules.The government has allowed fertiliser shops to function, and even manufacturing and packaging of fertilisers, pesticides and seeds have been permitted during the lockdown period.Inter and intra movement of farm machinery related to sowing and harvesting is also exempted from the lockdown rules. New Delhi, Feb 1 () Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar on Saturday hailed the Budget 2020 saying adequate fund to the tune of Rs 1.60 lakh crore has been allocated for agriculture and its allied sector including irrigation for the next fiscal.
 A 16-point action plan has been chalked out for realising the target of doubling farmers' income by 2022, he said, adding that several schemes like PM-Kisan are being implemented are benefitting the farming community.
 "The government's focus has been 'Gaon, gareeb and kisan' and the focus in the Budget on providing better facilities to this section reinforces the government's commitment of 'Sabka Sath, Sabka Vikas," Tomar said in a statement.
 Rs 1.60 lakh crore has been allocated for the agriculture and its allied sector, and Rs 1.23 lakh crore for the rural development, he added.
 Tomar, who is also rural development minister, said the Budget 2020 proposes to give relief to women and middle class people as the focus has been on addressing issues related to health, education, skill development and clean water.
 He also thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman for allocating sufficient funds for both agriculture and rural development ministries. LUX ANS

Agri Min says adequate funds given for farm, rural development in FY21

India has left behind the US to become the world's third largest <keyword id="170160" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="steel-producer">steel producer</keyword>, Union Minister of Steel and Mines <keyword id="6382481" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Narendra-Singh-Tomar">Narendra Singh Tomar</keyword> said while addressing a meeting of the Parliamentary Consultative Committee attached to his ministry. 
 
By 2025, the government has fixed a target of 300 million tonnes production capacity and steel ministry is working out an action plan and strategies to achieve this target, the minister said. 
 
"So far India was the 4th largest steel producer in the world only after China, Japan and the US. However, during the first five months of this calendar year, India has achieved the 3rd position in the global steel production," said Tomar . 
 He elaborated that Indian <keyword id="34559" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="steel-industry">steel industry</keyword> is growing at a reasonably good pace and last year the growth in crude steel production in India is more than 8%. 
 
According to Tomar, Indian steel industry is already in expansion mode. The older steel plants are being modernised and expanded. New green field plants are also coming with state-of-the-art technologies. 
 He further said that recently <keyword id="71" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Prime-Minister">Prime Minister</keyword> <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> had dedicated the India's largest Blast Furnace of 4160 cubic meter, installed at SAIL's <keyword id="1497976" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="iisco-steel">IISCO Steel</keyword> plant at Burnpur and several Blast Furnaces of around 4000 cubic meter with world class efficiency parameters are in the operation in the country. 
 
On Research and Development to sustain the long-term growth of the Indian steel industry, the minister asserted that the problems in raw material area need to be addressed to utilise low-grade ore and high ash coal through R&amp;D and technology interventions. Tomar also emphasised on the need to pursue R&amp;D for development of value added products for which we are dependent on import.
