<keyword id="21244010" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="government-measures" source="keywords">Government measures</keyword> such as mandatory quality control orders and increasing customs duty have helped boost exports of <keyword id="25284" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="toys" source="Orion">toys</keyword> from India, but there is a need to do much more for the sector, a top official said on Wednesday. Secretary in the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) Rajesh Kumar Singh also indicated that they are diligently pursuing the proposal of extending fiscal incentives under the production-linked incentive scheme for the sector. He said that the industry is wondering about one proposed major policy intervention and "let me assure you that we are still pursuing that". In the interim Budget in February, the Commerce and Industry Ministry has recommended an outlay of Rs 3,489 crore for the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for toys to boost domestic manufacturing of the sector. As the scheme is yet to be cleared by the Union Cabinet, the interim Budget has made a token provision of Rs 1 lakh towards the scheme for 2024-25. The scheme aims to attract investments in key sectors and cutting-edge technology; ensure efficiency, bring economies of size and scale in the manufacturing sector and make Indian companies and manufacturers globally competitive. Singh said that the country's <keyword id="21563576" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="toy-exports" source="keywords">toy exports</keyword> have jumped to USD 325.72 million in 2022-23 from USD 96.17 million in 2014-15 as the government is providing all-around support for creating a conducive manufacturing ecosystem for the toy industry. Imports of toys dipped by 52 per cent from USD 332.55 million in 2014-15 to USD 158.7 million in 2022-23. "The national action plan for toys and other initiatives has had a good impact, but we need to do much more," Singh said, adding the sector holds huge exports and job potential. In order to make India a global hub for toy manufacturing, the government has undertaken a series of initiatives including the formulation of a comprehensive National Action Plan for Toys (NAPT) to promote the designing of toys, using toys as a learning resource, monitoring quality of toys, and promoting indigenous toy clusters. The secretary was speaking at a toy workshop in New Delhi. In order to enable further growth, increased market access and development of new-age marketing skills, DPIIT conducted a workshop with Flipkart and the Indian Toy Industry. Flipkart, Walmart and the Toy Association of India participated in the event. Joint Secretary in the DPIIT Sanjiv said that the workshop was aimed at enhancing India's position and capabilities in the global toy supply chain. It will help the toy manufacturers understand the nuances of online selling which shall in turn help in the growth of sales and market access, Sanjiv said. The issues figured out in the workshop included ways to increase sourcing by online platforms, onboarding of manufacturers on the Flipkart platform and upskilling. It was also aimed at supporting online selling, scaling domestic consumption and upskilling/reskilling workforce. Last year, Flipkart informed toy makers about their requirements and expected quality standards, as it is directly engaging with domestic toymakers for sourcing. The online platforms provide greater access to a much wider customer base across India, expanding their market reach significantly. E-commerce eliminates the need for physical stores, reducing operational costs. It also provides valuable brand exposure to a large audience. Additionally, e-commerce platforms offer data on consumer buying habits and preferences, allowing manufacturers to develop products that cater to market demands. India raised import duties on toys beginning in February 2020. The basic customs duty was increased from 20 per cent to 60 per cent and then to 70 per cent in July 2021.

The study indicates a notable decline of 52 per cent in toy imports and an impressive surge of 239 per cent in toy exports compared to the fiscal year 2014-15. The report credits the government's dedicated efforts in the past six years for creating a more favourable manufacturing ecosystem for the Indian toy industry. During this period, the number of manufacturing units doubled, reducing dependence on imported inputs from 33 per cent to 12 per cent. Furthermore, gross sales value witnessed a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 10 per cent, accompanied by an overall increase in labour productivity. The findings highlight India's emergence as a prominent player in the global toy value chain, evident in the country's integration into the global toy value chain and zero-duty market access for domestically manufactured <keyword id="25284" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="toys" source="Orion">toys</keyword> in nations like the UAE and Australia. The report positions India as a viable alternative to established toy hubs like China and Vietnam. To solidify its position in the global market, the report emphasizes the need for consistent collaborative efforts between the toy industry and the government. Key areas identified include technological advancements, e-commerce integration, partnerships and exports, brand-building investments, engagement with educators and parents for effective communication with children, valuing cultural diversity, and collaboration with regional artisans. The Indian government has implemented various interventions and initiatives to foster growth in the toy industry. These include the formulation of a comprehensive National Action Plan for Toys (NAPT) with 21 specific action points, increases in Basic Customs Duty (BCD) on toys, sample testing of each import consignment by the <keyword id="19992660" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="directorate-general-of-foreign-trade" source="keywords">Directorate General of Foreign Trade</keyword> (DGFT) to curb sub-standard imports, issuance of a Quality Control Order (QCO) for toys in 2020, and support through cluster-based approaches. The report indicates significant interest from global retail giant Walmart to import toys from India and sell them worldwide. Walmart has set a target of USD 10 billion for overall imports from India, including Indian toys. With the concerted efforts of the government and domestic manufacturers, the Indian toy industry is projected to witness substantial growth in the next five years. DPIIT Secretary mentions that the global toys industry stands at around USD 300 billion, whereas India holds around USD 1.5 billion. He envisions a doubling of the Indian toy industry in the next five years. <keyword id="20072072" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sanjeev-singh" source="keywords">Sanjeev Singh</keyword>, Joint Secretary at DPIIT, reveals Walmart's interest in Indian toys, with a target of USD 10 billion in overall imports from India. After that, they'll get $500 per month.One parent told <a href="https://chicago.cbslocal.com/2021/08/30/chicago-public-schools-bus-driver-shortage-lyft-ride/">CBS Chicago</a> that she dropped her son off at Chicago's Southside Occupational Academy before work, but he had to take a Lyft ride home, which cost $36. APP-ATHY: Among U.S. consumers who claim they watch TV with a smartphone or tablet in hand, just 42% of them have actually tried using a designated second screen app while watching a live TV program, according to a new study from CEA/NAPTE whose results were shared at last week's CES conference. Of those consumers, only 13% thought that the synchronized experience actually made their TV watching experience "much more enjoyable." Most consumers (67%) called it "somewhat better." The results seem a bit disappointing given that the second screen represents a new frontier for brands and advertisers to dish up relevant content to TV watchers. For now, they have yet to figure out how to deliver compelling second-screen experiences synched to live programming.
The answer for these second-screen apps may be to shift the focus away from in-program content and onto these apps' marketing capabilities. The same survey found that more than half of the consumers who claimed they accessed synchronous second-screen content did so during the commercial breaks instead of during the live program. With a bit of audience details to help target viewers, these apps could deliver more relevant ads during commercial breaks that are related to TV programming.
Whatever the means, there is too large of an audience for brands and advertisers to not capitalize on the second-screen opportunity. Already <a href="https://intelligence.businessinsider.com/the-second-screen-is-a-top-mobile-activity-2013-9" target="_blank">almost 50% of U.S. smartphone and tablet owners report using their devices while watching TV</a>, and half of those consumers use devices for activity related to the show they are watching.
