<p class="drop-cap">With a shoestring budget, offbeat characters, and a largely-unknown cast, indie comedy "<keyword id="4080636" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="napoleon-dynamite">Napoleon Dynamite</keyword>" is one of Hollywood's most surprising success stories.</p><p>"Napoleon Dynamite" was first released in 2004 after premiering to critical acclaim at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah. It was also a major hit when it received a wider release from Fox Searchlight Pictures. "Vote for Pedro" shirts soon became ubiquitous, as did references to "ligers" - a half-tiger, half-lion hybrid drawn by Napoleon.</p><p><keyword id="1962225" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Jared-Hess">Jared Hess</keyword> and his wife, Jerusha, wrote a film about a high school loner Napoleon (<keyword id="6202261" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Jon-Heder">Jon Heder</keyword>) and his eccentric circle of friends and family.</p><p>Set in Preston, Idaho, where Hess himself spent much of his adolescence, the film perfectly captures the backwards charm of a small rural town, where Cyndi Lauper and Moon Boots reign supreme even in the year 2004, and after-school chores include feeding pet llamas. </p><p>One of the film's most iconic moments occurs near the end, when Napoleon performs a stunningly skillful dance (to funk band Jamiroquai's "Canned Heat") in front of his peers in order to help his friend Pedro (Efren Ramirez) become class president.</p><p>Napoleon's moves became the stuff of legend after the movie turned into a blockbuster. But Heder told Insider he just kind of "winged it" when it came to filming the scene since there was no choreographer working on the movie.</p><p>For the film's 17th anniversary, Insider spoke to Heder, Hess, who also directed the film, and Ramirez about how Napoleon's now legendary solo dance scene came to be - and why the film's quiet charm endures years after its release.</p><div type="image" title="Jon Heder dancing onstage as Napoleon Dynamite in &quot;Napoleon Dynamite.&quot;" height="2394" width="3192" msid="83436243" hostid="261"></div><h2>The director first learned of Heder's dance skills while they were both students at Brigham Young University</h2><p>The way Heder explained it, he and his twin brother, Dan, were always "obsessed" with the 70s and "loved the 70s all through high school." </p><p>But when the brothers arrived at Provo, Utah's BYU in the late 90s, their obsession reached new heights. Inspired by disco music and the 1977 film "Saturday Night Fever," they began dancing together on nights out. When the twins' lives started "forking," or growing apart, the actor continued to dance on his own, mostly at the bidding of his friends.</p><p>"I was obsessed with Jamiroquai. I just loved them. When their newest album came out that was the album I was dancing to everywhere," Heder said of the British funk band's 2001 project, "A Funk Odyssey."</p><p>It didn't take long before Heder's dance moves caught the attention of Hess, who was also enrolled at BYU at the time. The two soon collaborated on a short film, "Peluca," which followed a quirky high schooler named Seth (Heder), whom Hess described to Insider as "kind of the same character" as Napoleon.</p><p>While shooting "Peluca" in Idaho, the crew had extra film left so Hess decided to film Heder grooving in character, inspired by the actor's now infamous dancing.</p><p>"I was like, 'Jon, while you're still dressed up in the moon boots and everything, let's go shoot this shot,'" Hess recalled to Insider. "'At the end of this empty dirt road, I'll just turn on the radio, and whatever's playing, just dance to the music.'" </p><p>Hess ended up filming Heder dancing for "a minute and a half" to a Jamiroquai song that just so happened to be playing on the radio.</p><p>"The dynamic of seeing this guy that looked like [Heder], being able to throw down some pretty impressive moves, is so strange and entertaining and funny all at the same time," the director said. "It was just kind of this incredible epiphany that occurred." </p><p>Ultimately, that dance scene didn't end up making it into "Peluca." But Hess and his wife were inspired to include a similar sequence in the feature they were writing - called "Napoleon Dynamite." </p><p>Heder recalled Hess telling him at the time, "'Yeah, it's going to be the climax for the film; you dancing.'" </p><div type="image" title="Efren Ramirez as Pedro and Jon Heder as Napoleon stand in front of lockers in a still from &quot;Napoleon Dynamite.&quot;" height="2392" width="3189" msid="83436246" hostid="261"></div><h2>Heder got the 'Napoleon Dynamite' dance scene done in three takes</h2><p>In the film, Napoleon's impassioned dance to Jamiroquai (during an assembly in front of the whole school) comes as a last-ditch effort to secure votes for Pedro, his new friend who desperately wants to be class president. But the dance also impresses Napoleon's friend and maybe-crush Deb (Tina Majorino), and forces his high school classmates to think of him in a new light. </p><p>Hess and Heder told Insider that they took a more unorthodox approach to filming the now-iconic scene. Running low on funds and unsure what song Napoleon would actually be dancing to, the cast and crew were forced to get creative. </p><p>"We had one roll of film left and basically had just three takes to get the entire dance sequence filmed," Hess said. "I remember after each take I was like, 'Oh, man.' I didn't think that we had it. I was really worried."</p><p>"And so I just kind of had to live with it and cross my fingers," he added. </p><p>Although the film didn't have a choreographer to help Heder with his dance moves, the actor knew that he wanted to make Napoleon's dance markedly different from the character's normal physicality.</p><p>"Like, Napoleon barely moves. He doesn't express a lot, he doesn't get that animated," Heder recalled. "We knew the vibe of the whole movie and the purpose of this dancing would be so different than the way Napoleon usually moves."</p><p>He also had some pretty straightforward direction from Hess: "Dude, you just do your thing."</p><p>"That was his direction. He just put it in my hands," Heder said. "Then I realized, you know what, I'll just do what I normally do. I'll just do my best to make it as funky as I can and as good as I can."</p><p>Hess also told Insider that some skillful editing was involved to make Heder's dance even more memorable, combining the best shots from multiple takes for the final version. </p><p>"When we got into the cutting room, when we were editing the film, it was like, 'Oh, wow. Yeah, we've definitely got it,'" the director recalled. "We ended up kind of Frankensteining together different dance moves from all three takes that we did and [put] them together as one." </p><p>"It worked because it wasn't a professionally choreographed sequence," Heder added. "It had a little of that 'just making it up as I go' vibe." </p><p>Adding to the pressure was the fact that Heder had to dance to multiple songs with similar tempos, in the event that their licensing request for Jamiroquai's "Canned Heat," the second single from the band's fourth album, "Synkronized," was denied. </p><p>"One take was to 'Canned Heat.' Another take was to 'Little L,' which is another Jamiroquai track from their album 'Funk Odyssey,'" Heder detailed. "And then we danced to a Michael Jackson song from 'Off the Wall.'" </p><p>Both creatives agree that the scene wouldn't have been quite the same if they hadn't secured the rights to "Canned Heat," but that ultimately, the success of the scene came down to the hilarious visual of Heder's character dancing his heart out. </p><p>"At the end of the day, you still would have had a nerd performing some ridiculous dance moves in front of a high school," Hess said. </p><p>And Napoleon's audience? Those were real high school students from Preston, Idaho, who worked for free, according to the director.</p><p>"We didn't have any money we could offer them," Hess recalled of casting the students. "It was just like, 'Hey, wanna come be in a movie and get a free bottle of Gatorade' or whatever we had out of the cooler. But we offered everybody a credit in the film. So it's a pretty long credit sequence at the end." </p><p>The extras didn't even get to see Heder's dance, nor did any of the other cast members. </p><p>"We actually shot all of their reaction stuff, weirdly enough, without Jon dancing. Cause they didn't want Jon to  overdo it," Hess explained. "Jon was literally just performing for the crew. He wasn't even performing for an actual audience of extras, which is kind of weird. He was boogieing down for just a bunch of film school friends." </p><p>The result was one of the most memorable movie climaxes in recent years: a quietly joyous, slow-building celebration of dance and movement, performed by one of film's most unassuming protagonists.</p><p>"We had no idea how it was gonna turn out until we went to the Sundance Film Festival and we saw the whole thing," Ramirez, who played Pedro, recalled. "It was just perfect - from the crowd's reaction to Heder's dancing." </p><div type="image" title="Jon Heder as Napoleon feeds Tina the llama in a still from &quot;Napoleon Dynamite.&quot;" height="2395" width="3194" msid="83436248" hostid="261"></div><h2>In the years since its release, Heder's dance has become an instantly recognizable part of the film</h2><p>Nothing has been quite able to match the barely-contained exuberance and self-effacing coolness of Napoleon's dance since, and the scene has become as much of a calling card for the movie as a "Vote for Pedro" shirt. </p><p>"As a character, it definitely won Napoleon some long overdue respect," Hess said of the dance. "It's like, here's a guy that's just flying under the radar in life and is underestimated by everyone. Suddenly he has a showcase for this weird secret talent, but he's using it to help his best friend. " </p><p>Ramirez agreed.</p><p>"This is what a friend would do for his friend, and that Napoleon put himself on the line like that, that's so wonderful to see," he told Insider. "It's like, wow, that's what friends are for."</p><p>But if you're expecting Heder to ever bust a groove like that again, don't wait on it.  </p><p>"It was all freestyle. I didn't memorize it. I mean, look, I've seen it many times, so there's certainly moves I could do, but I don't remember the order," he said.</p><p>"I always tell people: Really the Napoleon dance is just dancing from your heart," Heder added. "It's just like, feeling it and just letting it go. Because what it was. That's just all I did for it, was just feeling the groove." </p>

16 Low-Budget Movies That Became Huge Hits

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">You've seen "<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/category/avengers-age-of-ultron">Avengers: Age of Ultron,</a>" "<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/category/mad-max-fury-road">Mad Max: Fury Road,</a>" and "<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/category/jurassic-world">Jurassic World.</a>"&#xa0;Though you concede they are all thrilling and visually stunning, you're still searching for movies this summer with a little bit more … story.</span><p>Thankfully there are two movies in theaters that can help feed that need.</p><p><a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0004234/?ref_=tt_ov_dr">Alfonso Gomez-Rejon</a>'s&#xa0;"<a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2582496/?ref_=nv_sr_1">Me and Earl and the Dying Girl</a>" and <a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0266622/?ref_=tt_ov_dr">Rick Famuyiwa</a>'s<span>&#xa0;</span>"<a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3850214/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1">Dope</a>" on the surface look like two very different movies, from where they're set to dialogue and characters. But they have a lot in common.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Both films played at this year's Sundance Film Festival and walked away with awards (for "Me and Earl" the prestigious Audience Award and Grand Jury prizes, and for "Dope" best editing), they both look at modern-day high-school life, and they have both been thrust in the middle of the summer blockbuster season ("Me and Earl" is in theaters; "Dope" opens Friday).</span><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Distributors Fox Searchlight ("Me and Earl") and Open Road Films ("Dope") are using the classic counter-programming maneuver in the hopes that audiences who aren't into Hollywood blockbusters, or by mid-June are ready for something new, will give these indie darlings a try.</span></p><p>This was a play Searchlight had success with when releasing the cult comedy "Napoleon Dynamite" in mid-June 2004.</p><p>Building off the success of the film-festival circuit without a star or name director, the film had an <a href="http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?page=weekend&amp;id=napoleondynamite.htm">impressive opening weekend</a> take of $117,000 and went on to have a total domestic gross of over $44 million (the film's budget was around $400,000).</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">In its opening weekend "Me and Earl" took in similar numbers with <a href="http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=meandearl.htm">over $196,000</a>. <strong><br /></strong></span><p>For this weekend, "Dope" is also getting creative in their purchase options, allowing tickets to be <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/dope-will-allow-bitcoin-ticket-purchases-2015-6">purchased via Bitcoin</a>, making it the first time digital currency has ever been allowed for ticket sales.</p><p>But strategic placement and gimmicks aside, the movies are strong enough to grab the attention of even the most dedicated Hollywood blockbuster moviegoer.</p><p>In "Me and Earl and the Dying Girl,"&#xa0;we follow the senior year of outsider Greg (Thomas Mann). With a daily existence that includes staying friendly with all the different cliques at his Pittsburgh high school (but not committed to any) and making ultra-low-budget knocks-offs of classic films with his buddy Earl (RJ Cyler), Greg's priorities change when he befriends Rachel (Olivia Cooke), a classmate who has recently been diagnosed with cancer.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">The story has a been-there-done-that feel, but the style is a fresh one to the high-school dramedy genre with its creative use of stop-motion animation and high IQ in movie geekdom.</span><p>"Dope"&#xa0;is set in the Inglewood neighborhood (known to those who live there as "The Bottoms") of Los Angeles and follows another geek, Malcolm (Shameik Moore), and his two friends Jib (Tony Revolori) and Diggy (Kiersey Clemons).</p><p>Unlike Greg and Earl, who have zero aspirations, Malcolm and his crew have high hopes for the future. Keeping away from the gang culture of South Los Angeles and completely obsessed with '90s hip-hop, their main goal is to leave the 'hood and get into college, especially Malcolm, who has aspirations to attend Harvard.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">But things get complicated when Malcolm goes to the party of the neighborhood drug dealer and unknowingly leaves with drugs. Malcolm and friends then embark on an adventure through LA to get rid of the goods.&#xa0;</span><p>If you listened to hip-hop in the '90s, you will likely love "Dope."</p><p>It's filled with nostalgic tracks from A Tribe Called Quest, Nas, Public Enemy, Digital Underground, and Naughty By Nature, curated by executive producer Pharrell Williams. They are perfectly placed and elevate the enjoyment of the story that's part "Ferris Bueller's Day Off," part "Friday."</p><p>What both films exemplify is that movies with strong stories (and without massive explosions) can survive in the summer months. These 2 indie movies are going to give the summer blockbusters a run for their money

<p>A Yelp search for the tiny potato fritters turned up <a href="http://www.yelp.com/search?find_desc=tater+tots&amp;find_loc=New+York%2C+NY">62 pages of establishments</a> that have them on the menu in New York City alone.</p>
<p>But are tots really making a comeback, though? It's questionable they ever went away. </p>
<p>They've been a kid favorite for decades. Never really gone from our collective conscious, crispy morsels have emerged as a trendy alternative to that potato stalwart, the french fry, on the urban restaurant scene. </p>
<p><a href="http://www.cnbc.com/id/102217125">The Associated Press (via CNBC)</a> is hot on the heels of the trend this week:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">The comfort (and kid) food staple, which celebrates its 60th anniversary this year, has been making it big on the bar scene, showing up as a crispy snack recently everywhere from neighborhood holes-in-the-wall to upscale craft bars. Meanwhile, home cooks and haute chefs alike have been inspired to come up with their own tweaks on the Tot.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">Barbecue bacon wrapped Tots. Breakfast burrito Tots. Pizza Tots. Totchos - think nachos only with Tots instead of tortilla chips - and the rather meta Tots-topped baked potatoes.</p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Cale Weissman, a fellow Business Insider employee, detailed what he loves about tots (which he says he's been eating for at least 15 years) on Twitter: </span></p>

<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Weissman also says that "</span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">the best are the smaller ones, because they're crispier" and "</span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">artisanal tater tots are a sham." Indeed, higher-end tots, in our experience, are often too soft. They are more likely to contain sweet potato or some other starch that doesn't absorb moisture the way that a regular old Idaho potato does, which creates a less satisfying crunch when fried. (Let's be honest: <a href="https://twitter.com/ceodonovan/status/537662332345020416">fried crunch</a> never goes out of style.)</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Tater tot-as-trend may be cyclical. It's certainly not the first time since millennials were tots themselves that there's been a resurgence in popularity of the potato poppers. This Winter's Hot New Food Trend: Tater Tots

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><br>In 1982 three Mississippi teens - Chris Strompolos, Eric Zala and Jayson Lamb - had the insane idea to remake, shot-for-shot, Steven Spielberg's classic "Raiders of the Lost Ark." Seven summers later they finally completed it, with the exception of one iconic scene.<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">In the age before Internet, the fan film, titled "Raiders of the Lost Ark: The Adaptation," quickly built a cult following via VHS. After Zala gave permission to one of his friends to make a copy of his master VHS, the grassroots domino effect of "The Adaptation" began to spread throughout the country. But the sudden surge of attention for the film pulled them back in and they found themselves motivated to do what they couldn't pull off for those seven summers - shooting the dangerous airplane explosion scene that also includes Indy fighting a large Nazi while avoiding the plane's propellers.</p><p>With documentary filmmakers following along, Strompolos, who plays Indiana Jones in the remake, and Zala, director on the film (Lamb had a falling out with the two numerous years before), assembled a team to build a life-size replica of the plane in the scene and recreate the desert location in the Mississippi Gulf Coast (yes, complete with camels). Last year, the scene was shot in just over a week on a measly budget of around $60,000 they received from investors and a <a href="https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/raidersguys/raiders-guys-and-the-lost-airplane-scene">Kickstarter campaign</a>.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>The result is chronicled in the documentary "<a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3551954/?ref_=nv_sr_1">Raiders!: The Story of the Greatest Fan Film Ever Made,</a>" directed by Jeremy Coon (producer of "Napoleon Dynamite") and Tim Skousen, which just had its world premiere at the South by Southwest Film Festival over the weekend.</p><p>Along with being ringside while the pair shoot the airplane explosion scene - which had horrible weather, a novice crew and shoddy pyrotechnics that almost ruined the final shot - "Raiders!" also recounts the 33-year history of the making of "The Adaptation."&#xa0;</p><p>We get first-hand accounts from Strompolos, Zala, Lamb and many others who spent most of their childhoods with the trio either starring, working behind the scenes as crew, or both explaining what it was really like to try to make a Spielberg film in their neighborhood.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>For every remarkable story of how they pulled something off - like Indy being chased by a boulder or the ghosts coming out of the Ark - there are the ones where serious injuries or death wasn't far off. For example, there was a scene where an old truck with no brakes was used to shoot the famous scene where Indy slides under a moving truck carrying the Ark, and is then dragged behind it from his whip. At another point, Zala was purposefully lit on fire with gasoline to recreate <span>the bar brawl where Indy finds Marion and the bar burns down. (L</span>uckily a fire extinguisher was close by.)</p><p>That halted production for a while due to angry parents.</p><p>But when it came to shooting the exploding airplane scene the kids couldn't decide what to do. Lamb, who was the cinematographer and special effects whiz of the group, wanted to do it as a miniature, but that wasn't in the cards for Strompolos and Zala. Spielberg didn't use miniatures for the scene! They finally just decided it wasn't possible to pull off (and do you really think their parents would allow them to fight near spinning propellers or blow up a plane?).</p><p>The scene wasn't a cakewalk for Spielberg either.</p><p>Filming in Tunisia, by the time they shot the scene, most of the cast and crew were dealing with <a href="http://www.laweekly.com/arts/after-33-years-and-an-airplane-explosion-their-raiders-of-the-lost-ark-remake-is-almost-complete-are-they-5205358">food poisoning</a>. Spielberg was spared as he only ate out of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raiders_of_the_Lost_Ark">canned food</a> from England. Harrison Ford's left leg was run over by the plane, tearing his cruciate ligament&#xa0;<span>during shooting as well.</span></p><p><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><br /></span></p><p><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></span></p><p>"Raiders!" is a testament to the power of movies and how, in this case, just dressing up as Indiana Jones for Halloween wasn't enough for a group of kids from Mississippi.&#xa0;<span style="line-height: 1.5em;">But it's hardly the only example of the influence movies can have on us. </span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">We've seen it in Michel Gondry's "</span><a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0799934/?ref_=nv_sr_1">Be Kind Rewind,</a><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">" which stars Jack Black and Mos Def as video store clerks who mistakenly erase all the tapes at their video store and decide to creatively reshoot them on no budget in their Brooklyn neighborhood with one camcorder. And opening last weekend, "</span><a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3263614/?ref_=nv_sr_1">Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter</a><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">" is based on the </span><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Takako_Konishi_%28office_worker%29">urban legend</a><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> that an office worker from Tokyo traveled to Fargo, North Dakota and died in search of the money Steve Buscemi's character in the Coen brother's "Fargo" left behind in the film. </span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">This summer, popular Sundance film "</span><a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2415458/?ref_=nv_sr_1">The Wolfpack</a><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">" opens in theaters, a documentary that highlights six brothers who have been living in an apartment in New York's Lower East Side shut away from society and only know about the outside world through the films they watch and then reenact using homemade props and costumes.</span></p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">"The Adaptation" stands alone in fan films, not only because of the dedication behind it, but the story the kids pay tribute to is one that continues to capture the imagination of audiences young and old 34 years after its release. (Sadly, the movie probably won't be released any time soon due to copyright issues.)</span><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Unlike films today that are topped a few weeks later by something bigger and bolder, Spielberg (along with Lawrence Kasdan and George Lucas, who wrote the screenplay) created a story, characters and action sequences that to this day never feels outdated. Strompolos and Zala were so obsessed with it they needed to </span><em style="line-height: 1.5em;">be</em><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> in that story.</span></p><p>If you grew up loving Indiana Jones you understand why "The Adaptation" was made and why Strompolos and Zala had to finish it. Indy is still a movie hero we can relate to. He doesn't have super powers, or powerful weapons that destroy the villains. Harrison Ford plays him as a man driven by discovery and uses sheer effort and wits to accomplish it.</p><p>How much does that ring true today?
