<ul><li>The National Health Commission in China is launching an investigation into the claims of the world’s first ‘genetically edited’ babies by Chinese researcher, He Jiankui. </li><li>Organisations allegedly involved in the experiment are claiming no knowledge or involvement in Jiankui’s experiment. </li><li>Even the university where he claimed to use the gene editing technology says Jiankui was on unpaid leave since February.</li><li>Jiankui’s research has not been peer-reviewed and is yet to feature in any scientific journal.</li></ul>The recent claim by a Chinese researcher, He Jiankui, of being the first to create ‘genetically edited’ babies — twin girls known as ‘Lulu’ and ‘Nana’— is being <a href="http://en.nhfpc.gov.cn/2018-11/26/c_73999.htm">investigated</a> by the National Health Commission of the People’s Republic of China. Jiankui has alleged that the girls had their embryos modified in order to give them an advantage that only a few people are naturally born with — the ability to resist any future infection of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Such a discovery could be revolutionary for the medical community and the world at large. But, many of the organisations involved, including one of the hospitals, are denying involvement in any such endeavor. Jiankui claims to have used CRISPR gene editing technology at the the Southern University of Science and Technology in Shenzhen to modify the <keyword id="25384" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="DNA">DNA</keyword> during in-vitro fertilization. The university, on the other hand, <a href="http://sustc.edu.cn/en/info_focus/2871">claims</a> that it knows nothing of any such research project being conducted and will launch its own investigation. As per their records, Jiankui has been on unpaid leave since February. The experiment was first <a href="https://www.technologyreview.com/s/612458/exclusive-chinese-scientists-are-creating-crispr-babies/">reported</a> by the MIT Technology Review and the <a href="https://www.statnews.com/2018/11/25/china-first-gene-edited-babies-born/">Associated Press</a> on Sunday. It is yet to be published in any scientific journal and neither has its data been peer-reviewed — common practices to establish the authenticity of any scientific discovery. Sideline controversy While the authenticity of the claim is being looked into, some experts in the scientific community <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/health-46342195">feel</a> that genetically modifying healthy embryos — <keyword id="68640" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="20" keywordseo="gene-therapy">gene therapy</keyword> — may be a step too far. Such an experiment is likely to raise ethical concerns and could account for scientific misconduct. A major concern seems to be that since the process is still experimental, these ‘designer babies’ could be <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S216225311630049X">subject to</a> off-target mutations resulting in a wide plethora of genetic problems including an increased susceptibility to cancer. Experts at the International Bioethics Committee (IBC) <a href="https://en.unesco.org/news/unesco-panel-experts-calls-ban-editing-human-dna-avoid-unethical-tampering-hereditary-traits">argue</a> that gene therapy should only be applied in cases where the cause is ‘preventive, diagnostic or therapeutic and without enacting modifications for descendants’. Modifying embryos could potentially lead to editing the human germline purely for non-medical purposes, which in turn would ‘jeopardize the inherent and therefore equal dignity of all human beings and renew eugenics.’ Editing the germline would imply that the mutation would affect every cell in the person and that same mutation would be passed on to its offspring.

While red, green, and blue are always popular this time of year, Welch says there are two other trendy options this year: plum and pastels."I'm seeing a lot of pastel, sequin skirts that create a girly, feminine vibe," she said. "A really pretty pastel is nice with a winter-white sweater. It just adds a little something different, because most people are used to wearing festive dark colors. But I think doing a pastel is actually kind of cool." <h2>Don't forget accessories</h2>Welch, who regularly shares her fashion expertise with more than 851,000 followers across TikTok and Instagram, notes that earrings have the potential to "really change an outfit.""If you're just wearing denim and a T-shirt, adding a festive earring — like a sparkle pair or bows, whatever it might be —can really help your outfit look instantly festive," she said.In place of earrings, you could also opt for a sparkling headband, broach, or snap-on charm — one of Welch's top styling tricks for the holiday season."They're labeled as shoe clips, and you can easily find them on Amazon or in your local craft stores," she said.While she recommends adding the charms — often shaped like crystals or bows — to everything from bags to jackets, she especially loves them on shoes."It helps you save money and it's a sustainable option for people who don't want to always have to buy a new pair of shoes," she said. And don't forget about ribbon bows, either.While some people are wearing the accessory in their hair, Welch says you can also add them to your dresses via broaches and belts."That very ballet-core-inspired style is coming into the holiday season," she said.<h2>What not to wear: sequins</h2>Welch notes that the most important aspect of any outfit is feeling comfortable and confident.But if you do want to stay on trend at your job's holiday party, she has one major piece of advice: "The go-to look is a far cry from sequins. I would not go the sequin route.""Sometimes sequins, when you walk into an event, they make it feel like you're going to a New Year's Eve party," she said. "Maybe it's not the most appropriate."She also says it's key to keep an eye on your skirt length."A lot of working environments are casual, so it kind of blurs the line of what's professional versus what isn't," she said. "If you have to question it, or it's something that you would wear to a club, it's probably not appropriate — even if you add tights."<h2>Where to shop, according to a stylist</h2>Welch says online retailer Lulu's has "super affordable" options for the holidays and describes retailer Mango as having "the best affordable but elevated" pieces for work events.She also enjoys Aritzia and, on the higher end, Nana Jacqueline.But the best place to shop, according to Welch, is your own closet."If all else fails, go for an all-black look and just add a sparkly bag or shoe," she said. "You cannot go wrong."

He told the Associated Press at the time that using the gene-editing tool, he'd disabled CCR5, a gene that forms a way for HIV to enter a cell. At the time, he had said that he had altered embryos for seven couples with one pregnancy resulting thus far.Chinese courts on Monday alluded to a third gene-edited baby being born, state media reported. Shortly after He announced the birth of the first two babies, China shut down his work and put him under investigation. The editing of human embryos raises a whole host of ethical questions that led to outrage from the scientific community. Changes made to an embryo have widespread effects to the entire body as the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ap-ap-exclusive-first-gene-edited-babies-claimed-in-china-2018-11">baby develops and can even be inherited</a>.
