An 'Emirates red' lipstick with lip liner is required."</p><p><strong>And there's apparently one lipstick in particular that's popular among the airline's flight attendants. Collins told the magazine: "We like to use Mac's Russian Red because it stays for a long time."</strong></p><p><strong>You'll also want to master the perfect flick, as liquid eyeliner is "recommended," while eye shadow can either be black or beige, she said. </strong></p><p>And there are rules on hairstyle, she added:&#xa0;"We can have a&#xa0;French twist&#xa0;or a&#xa0;bun with a red scrunchie. The red scrunchie is optional. Tata-owned <keyword id="2573" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="air-india" source="Orion">Air India</keyword> (AI) has released latest grooming guidelines for all its crew members while giving clear instructions about the 'No More Chalta Hai'culture.<br /><br />Air India issued a circular of over 40 pages regarding the revised image and uniform guidelines, which clearly mentions criterions for both male and female crew members.<br /><br />"For the male crew, black uniform jackets must be worn throughout the flight in all cabins. (During boarding, service and deplaning). Personal tie pins are not allowed. Crew can wear a tie without the tie pin if not issued. Only black calf-length socks without logos are to be worn with the uniform. Men must maintain neat short haircut with side parting (without volume)," Air India circular read.<br /><br />In addition to this, Air India asked the male crew members to shave daily and apply hair gel mandatorily.<br /><br />"Use of hair gel is mandatory. Male crew with deep receding hairlines and male balding patches must keep a clean shaved head or bald look. The Head must be shaved daily. A crew cut is not permitted. Grey hair is not permitted. Grey hair must be regularly coloured in a natural shade. Fashion colours and heena are not permitted. Rings- Only one ring in wedding band design is allowed for men. Only one <keyword id="15604161" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="sikh-kada" source="Orion">Sikh Kada</keyword> with a maximum width of 0.5 cm thickness in gold or silver without any design, logos or stones may be worn. (No bracelets)," the guidelines read.<br /><br />Air India asked its female crew members to follow the latest uniform guidelines strictly.<br /><br />According to its latest circular female crew members should follow the following uniform guidelines, "<keyword id="1053418" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="apron" source="Orion">Apron</keyword> is discontinued and not to be worn. Black blazer with Indo-western uniform is also discontinued and not to be worn on board. Calf-length stockings (sheer ones and matching the skin tone) are mandatory for flight duties with both a saree and Indo western uniform. The company-issued black cardigan can be worn for boarding and deplaning (during winter months only) and inflight for lull periods on LH and ULH flights throughout the year. Cardigan and waistcoat must never be worn together. Cardigan is not permitted during service."<br /><br />It further said that foundation and concealers matching the skin tone are mandatory.<br /><br />"The crew must wear complete make-up as per the new uniform guidelines for all flight duties using the company shade card only. Eyeshadow, lipsticks, nail paint and hair shade cards are to be strictly followed as per uniform. Personal shades in these four products are not permitted.<br /><br />Nail paint colours from shade card to be matched with uniform - red and corals for red uniform, pink with blue uniform and nude, pearly white and French manicure with both uniforms," the guidelines read.<br /><br />As per the latest guidelines, gel nail polish and French manicures are allowed with regular refills and must be well-maintained.<br /><br />"Earrings- gold and diamond studs only in round shape without any design and ornamentation are permitted. Pearls are not allowed. A small bindi is allowed with a saree only (optional) and must be within 0.5 cm in size. Big-size bindi is not permitted. Two rings with 1 cm of width allowed for the female crew but to be worn one in each hand. 20. Only 1 thin bangle in gold or silver without design and stones may be worn. (No bracelets)," it said.<br /><br />The airline said that the grey hair must be coloured in a natural shade or using a company hair colour shade card for females.<br /><br />"Blonde hair colour and streaking is strictly not permitted. Hair must be neat and styled according to company hair guidelines. Very high top knots and low buns resting on the neck are strictly not permitted. The bun must be made in the centre of the crown. A donut must be used for making a round bun. Only a thin sheer invisible net must be used with buns. Thick nets are not permitted. Only four black medium-size tic-tac or <keyword id="3596" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="bobby" source="Orion">bobby</keyword> pins are to be used. Pins must be of the same size and type. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Former TWA <keyword id="11955373" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="flight-attendant" source="Orion">flight attendant</keyword> Ann Hood said she was always stressed about her weight on the job.</li><li>In her memoir, Hood wrote that there were weigh-ins and some hires were fired for their size.</li></ul><p>When Ann Hood became a TWA flight attendant in 1979, the 21-year-old college graduate's dream job was less glamorous than she thought it would be.</p><p>As the Rhode Island native wrote in her memoir, "<a href="https://www.annhood.us">Fly Girl</a>," released May 3, much of the job entailed "draconian" rules and regulations centered around image — including unannounced weight checks.</p><p>And while the airline seemed to have a preference for new hires with college degrees, Hood wrote, "flight attendants were still chosen in no small part for good looks, and with height and weight requirements."</p><p>"Your hem and high heels had to be a certain height. Earrings could only dangle so far. Your lipstick was supposed to match the stripe of your blazer," Hood, now 65, told Insider, adding that it was a "not good" maroon color.</p><p>Any act of defiance — say, wearing pink lipstick — could trigger a supervisor's wrath, according to Hood. "If you didn't have that TWA look, they could write you up — and discuss the color of the lipstick," she said.</p><p>As she wrote in "Fly Girl," shirking these rules could lead to termination. "People were fired for wearing the wrong lipstick, looking sullen, having chipped nail polish, and scores of other reasons that seem archaic now," she wrote.</p><h2>High heels were mandatory, Ann Hood says</h2><p>Decades after leaving the profession in 1986, Hood remembers the pain of wearing high heels — which she said were mandatory for women — on long flights. </p><p>"Sometimes you were just wincing as you walk," she told Insider. "Imagine doing a flight to Cairo — 14 hours wearing those things."</p><p>In "Fly Girl," Hood described a training that involved practicing "the proper way to walk in our high heels up and down the 747s' iconic spiral staircase that led to the lounge, repeatedly bringing trays of cocktails and food upstairs on our mock-up plane with a particular — and difficult to master — ankle-crossing walk."</p><h2><div type="image" title="Author Ann Hood described unannounced weigh-ins during probation as a flight attendant." height="721" width="960" msid="92066188" hostid="261"></div></h2><h2><strong>There were consequences for gaining weight</strong></h2><p>At 5-foot-7, Hood said she was 120 pounds when she began working at TWA and was told she would need to stay that way. "We were told every step of the way — in the application process, interview, and training," she said, speaking of the requirement to remain at one's hiring weight.</p><p>During a six-month probation period for new hires, unannounced weigh-ins for flight attendants were common, according to Hood, who wrote that "any infraction" could lead to termination. </p><p>"After the six-month probation, you could still be fired for weight gain, but there were not mandatory weigh ins," she told Insider.</p><p>"I was so skinny, but I was always worried," she said. "You wait for the other shoe to drop," she said of the fallout of gaining some weight from eating in-flight meals such as the beloved pot roast.</p><p>In "Fly Girl," Hood detailed the lengths she and other flight attendants would go to in order to manage their weight.</p><p>"Imagine a gaggle of tall, pretty, thin young women sitting in the sauna at the YMCA of Boston, trying to sweat off pounds," she wrote. <p>A recent New York Times article on <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2014/03/02/us/a-growing-role-for-mormon-women.html?_r=0">the rise of female Mormon missionaries</a> points to the <a href="https://missionary.lds.org/dress-grooming/sister/grooming/skin/">guidelines for appearance described and modeled on the church's website</a>. We decided to take a closer look at the dress code for this fast-growing religion, which is formally known as the Church of the Ladder Day Saints (LDS).</p>
<p>As described on <a href="http://mormon.lds.net/mormon-beliefs/mormons-and-modesty">LDS.net</a>:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">You might not immediately be able to spot an individual Mormon by his or her clothing. The clothing Mormons wear is fashionable and ordinary, chosen by the members themselves to suit their style within the guidelines. However, if you were to observe a group of young LDS teenagers, you might notice that overall, there is a difference. These girls will not have low-cut tops or tops that reveal their stomachs. Their shoulders will be covered and their dresses will reach their knees. Their clothing won't be tight or suggestive, even though it's fashionable. They'll have no more than one set of earrings, positioned in the usual place on the ears.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">Boys won't have overly baggy pants that reveal underwear and their waistlines won't hang low. They also have their shoulders, stomachs, and chests covered and their clothing is designed to cover them, not reveal them. Neither group will have tattoos.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.lds.org/callings/missionary/dress-grooming">Standards for missionaries</a>, as exemplary Mormons, are even more explicit. Here's a summary of their guidelines:</p>
<h3>Clothing</h3>
<p>Women should wear "professional suits, skirts, blouses, jackets, sweaters, and dresses." Jeans or pants are only acceptable during certain activities, like exercise.</p>
<p>Shirts with "cap sleeves" can't be worn alone. But women don't have to tuck in their shirts. While layering is okay, undershirts shouldn't be noticeably longer than the top layer.</p>
<p>Skirts and dresses must cover their entire knee when sitting or standing. No mesh, fishnet or lace tights. And if they wear leggings, the bottoms can't be visible. Wear boots or colored nylons that match with flat shoes.</p>
<p>And all the above clothing should be"attractive, colorful, tailored to fit well, and conservative in style."</p>
<h3>Hair and Make-up</h3>
<p>While there's no specific style, length, or color for hair, it should be "attractive," "easy to manage," "natural," and "conservative."</p>
<p>If women choose to wear any accessories, like clips or headbands, they can't draw attention or "distract from your message."</p>
<p>Make-up isn't required, but the guide notes it can help women look your best. If women do choose to wear cosmetics, they should be "neutral and conservative in style and color." The same goes for nail polish.</p>
<p>And of course, "bathe daily, use deodorant, and wash your hair frequently." Perfume, if worn, can't be "overpowering or distracting."</p>
<h3>Shoes and Accessories</h3>
<p>This section covers it all: flats, everyday shoes, heels, boots, exercise shoes, earrings, necklaces, bracelets, watches, rings, and bags.</p>
<p>For safety reasons, women should wear closed-toe and closed-heel shoes. Also, for safety and security, earrings (only one in each ear) can't hang longer than approximately one inch below the earlobe. Naturally, tattoos, nose rings, other body piercings, and toe rings are unacceptable.</p>
<p>Lastly, "backpacks are not professional."</p>
<h3>Men</h3>
<p>Men should wear wrinkle-resistant suits and ties. When choosing to wear a lighter color, they should stick with grey or brown. Only polyester blend, white shirts can be worn under suits. In colder weather, sweaters and vests are also permitted.</p>
<p>Men also have to wear closed-toe and closed-heel dress shoes or boots with matching socks. No suede shoes or cowboy boots. No backpacks or hoodies either.</p>
<p>Hair should be kept "relatively short and evenly tapered." Faux-hawk, crew cuts, mullets, spikey styles, and messy hair are prohibited. They can't bleach or dye their hair. Sideburns can't be longer than mid-ear either.</p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">"Bathe, shave, and brush your teeth each day. Use deodorant, and wash your hair frequently."</span></p>
<p>While the guide doesn't mention facial hair, all of the men we saw on the site are clean-shaven.</p>
