<ul><li>What goes around comes around, especially when it comes to fashion and clothing.</li><li>According to PwC and Assocham, landfills are brimming with so much urban waste that by 2050, India is reportedly going to need a landfill that's the size of its capital New Delhi.</li><li>Before World Environment Day, we talk to Myntra about its new e-store, <keyword id="11376339" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="myntra-for-earth">Myntra for Earth</keyword>, that is targeting environment-conscious shoppers and aiming to focus more on sustainability as it moves forward.</li><li>Ayyappan Rajagopal, Chief Business Officer, Myntra tells us about the kind of response Myntra for Earth has seen so far, what kind of sustainable choices do consumers have, changing fashion trends in the future and Myntra for Earth’s goals for this quarter.</li></ul>The future of fashion is upcycling, recycling and sustainable clothing. Brands in India have already started taking baby steps towards converting fashion into a sustainable choice for consumers. More and more consumers are becoming aware of their fashion choices and realising that a worn-out piece of cloth they decide to throw, even as simple as a plain t-shirt, never really goes ‘away.’ It all ends up in a landfill. According to an Assocham and PwC report, landfills are brimming with so much urban waste that by 2050, India is reportedly going to need a landfill that's the size of its capital, New Delhi. At the same time, fast fashion is becoming a trend, which offers consumers the opportunity to buy more clothes at a lower price and that has taken a toll on the environment. It offers consumers an option to swiftly discard their clothes and buy new ‘trendy’ dresses. Consumers and brands aren’t ignoring these horrifying numbers anymore. This World Environment Day, many fashion brands have sworn to make a difference and be cognizant of the harmful effects their products can have on the environment. E-commerce giant Myntra has also stepped up. It has officially launched a sustainable e-store called ‘Myntra for Earth’ that only features eco-friendly fashion choices for all genders and age groups. It has already onboarded 70 leading fashion and lifestyle brands over the last 6 months to offer over 5500 styles to customers on its sustainable store. The store includes handloom and handcrafted, organic, natural-dyed, recyclable and eco-friendly, vegan, and cruelty-free options. The products ordered through this store are delivered in packets made from 100% recycled paper. It is now working towards scaling the number of brands in the store to ~2X by the upcoming quarter while adding another 4000 styles to the existing assortment. We caught up with Ayyappan Rajagopal, Chief Business Officer, Myntra to discuss the challenges of launching a new e-store during a global pandemic, its sustainability roadmap, a few trends that we can expect to see in sustainable fashion and platform’s goals to grow the store this quarter. Excerpts: Q. Tell us more about the 'Myntra for Earth’ store. When was it launched? What kind of response have you seen from the consumers? Launched in October 2020, "Myntra for Earth" is Myntra's sustainable store showcasing a more conscious choice to fashion and lifestyle shoppers. About 70 leading fashion and lifestyle brands have partnered with Myntra over the last 6 months to offer over 5500 styles to customers on its sustainable store. The store offers an immersive and engaging shopping experience for truly ‘sustainability-inclined’ conscious shoppers. As of now, we have seen increased growth in store visits and an uptick in revenue since its launch. The specially-curated store recognises the fashion industry’s sustainability efforts and also aims at augmenting the income opportunities of artisans and NGOs involved. Since its launch, Myntra For Earth store has received a phenomenal response. We are working towards scaling the number of brands in the store to ~2X by the upcoming quarter while adding another 4000 styles to the existing assortment. Q. How are you planning to market this store? Is there a larger campaign-in-the-making to raise awareness? Currently, we are focussing on having the right assortment of brands and products for the consumers in the store as the topmost priority. We have already received phenomenal response from consumers for the products of the store. Nearly 62% of the visitors to the ‘Myntra For Earth’ store are women, with metro cities contributing about 40% of the overall visits to the store. People of all age groups are seemingly conscious about their fashion choices and their impact on the environment in varying degrees. However, those in the age group of 21 to 35 are contributing the highest to the growth of the ‘Myntra For Earth’ store. Q. You have 70 brand partners on Myntra For Earth already. Can you mention a few names? Which are the most loved brands so far? Key names among many include H&amp;M, Mango, Unnati Silks, Bharatsthali, Pothys, Metro Kids Company, Kama Ayurveda, Forest Essentials and Fab India among others. <keyword id="2712840" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Myntra-Fashion">Myntra Fashion</keyword> Brands featured on the platform for their conscious collection include Taavi, Roadster and Ether. Q. So far, we have only seen a few start-ups that are completely sustainable. Are Indian legacy brands following suit? The MFE store has a combination of both home-grown brands like Taavi, Taniera and global brands like Levi, Mango &amp; H&amp;M that give importance to sustainability. Most of the legacy brands have a dedicated charter of well-defined goals on sustainability to educate consumers on organic fashion. Q. Is the packaging for Myntra Earth products different from others? Considering it aims to have a minimal effect on the environment? The majority of the orders are delivered using paper packaging at Myntra. We are gradually moving towards a complete eco-friendly paper for delivery purposes.

The company claims this is the biggest funding round ever in the Indian space-tech sector. The funding round was led by GIC, a leading global investment firm headquartered in Singapore. Skyroot will use the funds to expand its space engineering team, which currently has close to 200 employees. The funding would also help the company get to full-fledged commercial satellite launch scale within a year from now, said Naga Bharath Daka, co-founder and COO of Skyroot. It has started booking payload slots for its upcoming launches, he added. Skyroot said it is developing India’s first privately developed space launch vehicle, named after the founder of India’s space program, Dr. <keyword id="29151" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="vikram-sarabhai" source="Orion">Vikram Sarabhai</keyword>. The Vikram Series rockets are built with an all-carbon-fibre structure, and can launch upto 800 kg of payloads to Low Earth Orbit (LEO), the company said. Skyroot is the first startup to sign an MoU with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) for sharing facilities and expertise. “Our objective is to establish ourselves as a provider of best-in-class rocket launch services and the go-to destination for affordable and reliable small satellite launches.” said Pawan Kumar Chandana, co-founder and CEO of Skyroot. Indian space tech startup Skyroot Aerospace raises $51 million in GIC-led funding round

The three-year-old startup is the first Indian private aerospace company to successfully test a fully cryogenic rocket engine named Dhawan-1 in honour of eminent Indian scientist Satish Dhawan. It will not license or sell its cryogenic engine technology to any other partners, but will use it to boost its operations. It will partner with other companies that have the capability of manufacturing satellites, mainly in earth observation and communication satellites, and help them launch it to space. Indian spacetech startup Skyroot has raised over $4 million in a round led by one of Google’s earliest backers

ISRO becomes the fifth best place to work in India - after it jumps five spots

<ul><li><keyword id="7537495" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Skyroot-Aerospace">Skyroot Aerospace</keyword> is the first private company in India to successfully test launch a homegrown rocket engine. </li><li>The company’s co-founder <keyword id="7537908" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pawan-Kumar-Chandana">Pawan Kumar Chandana</keyword> told Business Insider that Skyroot Aerospace is on track to test-launch its first full rocket by December 2021.</li><li>Two more rocket stages will be tested within the next six months.</li></ul>"We will be one of India’s first private launch vehicle makers,” Skyroot Aerospace co-founder Naga Bharath Daka said in <a href="https://m.timesofindia.com/companies/hyderabad-startup-set-to-test-launch-vikram-series-of-rockets/amp_articleshow/69041671.cms">April 2019</a>. One year down the line, the Indian startup is the first private company in India to have successfully launched a homegrown rocket engine. It is not an entire rocket yet, but the company plans to have that off the ground as well by December next year, CEO and co-founder of Skyroot Aerospace Pawan Kumar Chandana told Business Insider. Chandana and Daka are both former Indian Space Research Organisation (<keyword id="6358064" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="isro">ISRO</keyword>) scientists. In another six months, the company aims to test two more rocket stages. The fourth and final stage will take another year to test. In December 2021, the first rocket will be tested. If it passes the test, Skyroot Aerospace has plans to build an entire family of Vikram rockets to send satellites into space. Successful test of the upper stage rocket engine “It [the rocket] is a three-stage rocket with a small liquid module, which is called the orbit adjustment model. The engines tested today belong to the orbit adjustment model,” Chandana told Business Insider. The upper stage rocket engine powers the final thrusts of a spacecraft as it positions satellites into the Earth’s orbit. Skyroot Aerospace’s upper stage rocket engine is India’s first entirely 3-D printed one. The engine will run on high-performance cryogenic propellants — fuels that require extremely low temperatures to stay liquid — like liquid natural gas (LNG) and liquid oxygen. The reason rockets need cryogenic propellants is that temperatures drop drastically in outer space. Outside the Earth’s atmosphere, there is also a lack of oxygen, so the element’s liquified form helps the fuel combust or burn. One launch, multiple orbits The test of the upper rocket stage demonstrated the capabilities of the orbit adjustment model, also called the 3D-printed bi-propellant liquid rocket engine ejector. It reduced the overall mass of the upper stage by 50%, reduced the total number of components required, and cut down on lead time by 80%. The bigger factor is that it is capable of multiple restarts. This means it can insert different satellites across varied orbits in a single mission. Skyroot Aerospace’s investors include Myntra and CureFit founder Mukesh Bansal, Vendashu Investments, and others. It has raised ₹ 31.5 crore so far and is in the process of bringing in another ₹ 90 crore this year.

When asked about the planned $40 million funding, Pawan Kumar Chandana, cofounder and chief executive of Skyroot, told Business Insider, “New capital [is] to ramp up production for commercial launches in 2022 and 2023.” Testing India's first cryogenic rocket engine by a private company The journey of Skyroot Aerospace has been of many firsts. It is the first <a href="https://m.economictimes.com/tech/startups/skyroot-aerospace-first-spacetech-startup-to-formally-sign-up-with-isro/articleshow/86118177.cms" data-type="tilCustomLink">private companies </a>to formally work with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to test and qualify its small rocket, capable of lifting up to 2,000 kilograms. The company — founded by former ISRO scientists Pawan Kumar Chandana and Naga Bharath Daka in 2018 — has added another feather to its cap. Skyroot Aerospace is now the first Indian private aerospace company to successfully test a fully cryogenic rocket engine, named Dhawan-1 in honour of eminent Indian scientist Satish Dhawan. The engine runs on two high-performance rocket propellants (a combination of fuel and oxidiser to move the rocket) — Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) and Liquid Oxygen (LoX). Therefore, it is called a cryogenic engine. Simplifying a cryogenic engine Rockets usually run on liquid hydrogen and kerosene, which have their own issues when dealing with extreme temperatures in space, Skyroot’s chief executive Chandana explained to Business Insider. Hydrogen is difficult to handle, highly inflammable and starts boiling at higher temperature, whereas kerosene freezes sooner. Cryogenic propellants like Methane used in liquid natural gas (LNG) and oxygen used in Liquid Oxygen (LoX) are much more efficient to handle and are cleaner. Therefore, they are the propellent for the future. A team of 20 people at Skyroot have been working on this technology for the last two years, and started manufacturing in October 2020. No company has flown these propellants to space yet, Chandana added. Skyroot’s cryogenic engines are 3D printed, which is reducing the manufacturing time by 95% and increasing efficiency of the engine compared to conventional methods. “Conventional engines have several components welded and limitations on the contours that can be manufactured,” Chandana added. These engines give out higher efficiency compared to a conventional alternative engine, he added. An add-on to boost Skyroot’s in-house developed technology While there is still time for Skyroot to take this technology to space, it is planning to launch its Vikram-1 next year by incorporating it into the company’s in-house orbital vehicle Vikram series to carry small satellites to space. Skyroot, which competes with Agnikul, another Indian space startup, that makes similar claims about pricing and 3D printing of launchers, will charge a customer based on the weight of the satellite. Agnikul, like Skyroot, is also working with ISRO and plans to launch its orbit vehicle to space by next year.
