Venture debt firm Stride Ventures closes a $200 million fund

The number of ad accounts Google disabled for policy violations increased by 70 per cent from 1 million to over 1.7 million. The company also blocked or removed over 867 million ads for attempting to evade its detection systems, including cloaking, and an additional 101 million ads for violating its misrepresentation policies. "We also continued to invest in our automated detection technology to effectively scan the web for publisher policy compliance at scale," said the company. Due to this investment, along with several new policies, Google removed ads from 1.3 billion publisher pages in 2020, up from 21 million in 2019. It also stopped ads from serving on over 1.6 million publisher sites with pervasive or egregious violations. Over the past few years, we introduced strict policies and restrictions around who can run election-related advertising on Google platform and the ways they can target ads. "Globally, we continue to expand our verification programme and verified more than 5,400 additional election advertisers in 2020," Google said. In the US, Google temporarily paused more than five million ads and blocked ads on over three billion Search queries referencing the election, the candidates or its outcome. Google blocked over 99 million COVID-19 fake ads in 2020

Under the I-T Act, taxpayers are required to get their accounts audited if the sales, turnover or gross receipts of business exceed ₹10 crore, while in case of professionals, the limit was over ₹50 lakh in 2020-21 (AY 2021-22). The last date for filing the <keyword id="2519161" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tax-audit-report" source="Orion">tax audit report</keyword> for the 2020-21 fiscal is January 15, 2022. For fiscal 2019-20 i.e. AY 2020-21, limit was ₹5 crore for businesses and ₹50 lakh for professionals and due date for original tax audit report was January 15, 2021. However, companies can still file the revised tax audit report for that year to rectify errors. While about 16 million people need urgent help, 20.7 million Yemenis need some humanitarian assistance, including 12.1 million people in acute need, Xinhua news agency quoted <keyword id="2143550" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Stephane-Dujarric">Stephane Dujarric</keyword>, the chief spokesman for UN Secretary-General <keyword id="300649" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Antonio-Guterres">Antonio Guterres</keyword>, as saying at a briefing on Wednesday. The UN estimates Yemen's population at more than 30 million people. "Yemen continues to be the world's worst humanitarian crisis and the largest aid operation," Dujarric said. "Famine is stalking the nation, with more than half the population facing acute food insecurity and record levels of acute malnutrition among children under 5." The spokesman noted that last year's plan was only 56 per cent funded and some critical programs had to be closed as a result. "We are doing everything we can to help, but we need adequate funding as needs continue to rise," he told the briefing. "At the high-level pledging event that took place in early March, donors pledged only $1.7 billion for the response, that's less than half what is required (for 2021). "The Secretary-General said the pledges represent at best a down payment. We urge donors to quickly disburse their pledges and scale up funding for the humanitarian response to save lives. "And if people have not yet pledged, it is never too late to do so," Dujarric added. Yemen has been mired in civil war since late 2014 when the Iran-backed Houthi rebels seized control of several northern provinces and forced the Saudi-backed government of President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi out of the capital Sanaa. The UN doling out $3 billion in humanitarian aid for Yemen

With the scrapping policy, raw materials like plastic, aluminium, steel,copper, would be recycled and will become a lesser cost component for the automotive industry. “Scrap material will create a lot of value addition,” he said. Gadkari also said that states can also make registration fees and road tax lower, as then people will be encouraged to buy new vehicles which will also result in more sales for the automobile industry. “Today automobile industry’s annual turnover is ₹4.5 lakh crore. With the scrappage policy, in five years that number can become ₹10 lakh crore. In turn, With the increase in sales, state and centre will also benefit from the GST revenue,” he said. He said that currently there are 51 lakh vehicles older than 20 years, 34 lakh vehicles older than 15 years and about 17 lakh vehicles older than 15 years. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had announced in Budget 2021 that cars older than 20 years and commercial vehicles older than 15 years will have to be scrapped. The government had also proposed renewing fitness certificates for vehicles older than 15 years every six months instead of the current one year. With the same, automobile fitness centres would be set up across the country to check the health of vehicles and also handout certificates for scrapping. However, things are slowly moving towards normalcy and we couldn’t be more thankful. One thing that is making things feel normal or somewhat close to normal again is the opening up of cinema halls. There has been a lot of pent up demand with people just tired of being stuck at their homes so this has been a welcome change. More and more people want to get back to watching movies on the big screen and the numbers are showing. Recent big-ticket releases like Akshay Kumar-starrer <keyword id="7188379" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sooryavanshi" source="Orion">Sooryavanshi</keyword>, Rajnikanth’s Annaatthe, Marvel’s Eternals, Dulquer Salmaan’s <keyword id="268517" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="kurup" source="Orion">Kurup</keyword> and most recently the latest Spiderman movie, <keyword id="10823072" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="spider-man-no-way-home" source="Orion">Spider-Man No Way Home</keyword> have led to a surge of people wanting to book tickets on online ticketing platforms. So we wanted to know what kind of revival online booking platforms like BookMyShow (BMS) are witnessing. And we got some answers from Ashish Saksena, COO - Cinemas, BMS and Anil Makhija, COO – Live Entertainment &amp; Venues, BMS and what both painted a picture of hope for cinemas, events as well as online platforms in 2022. Bringing people back to cinemas and events With cinemas across all states in India finally opening, there is a lot of optimism about this quarter kick-starting the recovery cycle for cinemas, audiences and the industry as a whole. BookMyShow witnessed a hockey stick growth in user engagement, traffic and transactions nearing pre-covid levels on the platform within just the first ten days of cinemas opening up. “Within the first 10 days of the movies releasing pan-India, daily consumer traffic surged to 76% of pre-Covid levels on an average while user engagement has been steadily rising the charts, already surpassing 66% of pre-covid levels on BookMyShow,” shared Saksena. Consumers from Chennai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata and Ahmedabad have been quickest to return back to the movies contributing, 48% of the traffic recovery. To encourage people to come back to the big screen, BMS has been running a six-month-long campaign #CinemaIsBack that it has conceptualised and executed in-house team. “The campaign aims at targeting entertainment-lovers across age groups, geographic restrictions notwithstanding and social setups through various social media platforms, with the spotlight on the all-new out-of-home movie entertainment experience - different but not a shred less than earlier! It is a visual, socially engaging and meme-based series executed on digital and social media and will be amplified across BMS’s customer base and potential new audiences both on the platform’s mobile app and website through mailers, push notifications along with social media platforms as also digital media to engage audiences through relevant video, visual and timely content,” added Saksena. <div type="image" title="#CinemaIsBack_BookMyShow" msid="88342145" hostid="261"></div> BMS is also going to onboard brand advocates to highlight the safety measures being undertaken at the cinemas. It is also working with partners across industries including Amazon, ixigo and MyGlamm to curate special offers and discounts for its transactors through the festive season. Apart from movie tickets, BMS also sells tickets for other experiences and events too. So is the enthusiasm to those offerings encouraging too? “There is a definitive rise in demand across cities. However, the format of events (stand-up comedy, music concerts, festivals &amp; performances) will gravitate towards smaller-capacity ones (bars, restaurants, clubs) where Covid safety protocols can be implemented seamlessly. The pent-up demand for these events led to an average occupancy of 70% for an event with the 50% capacity guidelines, as permitted by the government. The capacity of these events typically ranges between 200-3000 attendees depending on the venue. We believe that audiences are elated to be back enjoying their favourite entertainment experiences thus providing some semblance of the pre-Covid live entertainment scenario. Currently, comedy, live music concerts and artist performances as well as regional theatre are amongst the most preferred and transacted events on BookMyShow,” explained Makhija. The response from smaller cities has been encouraging too and if the situation improves from where they stand today, both Makhija and Saksena are hopeful that the Tier II and III cities will contribute to the platform’s growth next year. Marketing during the pandemic While live events and cinemas were completely shut during the lockdown months, it was important for the platform to maintain its connect with its consumers. Apart from the #CinemaIsBack campaign, the strategy was also to keep talking to its audience. Speaking about its marketing strategy, Saksena said, “With an all-new integrated booking flow, keeping in mind the SOPs mandated by the government, and our #CinemaIsBack campaign across digital and social media, our focus has been on educating the consumers about the safety precautions undertaken by various partners across the industry while rekindling the memory and magic of the movie experience on the big screen with popcorns and beverages in tow. On social media, we have been engaging with our consumers through quirky, fun, nostalgic contextual posts and contests, providing an exhaustive collection of information, which in turn has been enabling consumers to make a well-informed decision even before they step out of their homes. As newer and newer content kicks in, we will expand our social media outreach, making it an all-encompassing programme with offers, contests and influencer marketing kicking in our brand ambassador initiative outlined earlier.” The way forward With cinemas opening in India and production houses announcing a line ups of big budget movies across languages and genres since the festive season this year, BMS anticipates the road to recovery to be smooth in 2022. “Over the next few months, we look forward to welcoming film enthusiasts and cinephiles #BackToTheatres for a safe entertainment experience through the festive season and beyond. Buoyed by the initial response to cinemas over the last month and given the staggering number of film titles set for release in December through Christmas and New Year, we believe we can expect strong growth from cinemas in the short-term itself. As far as live events go, globally countries like USA and UK have gone back to pre-covid levels and we are expecting a similar compelling return for live entertainment through 2022-23. The pace at which the country’s vaccination drive is progressing reposes confidence that the stage has been set for a long-impending revival of the entertainment business in India with all the standard safety protocols in place,” concluded Saksena.

Pantvaidya: ALTBalaji's content line-up for the year is geared for the Bharat audience, who comprise 59 percent of the viewership on the <keyword id="235499" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="APP">app</keyword>. The platform continues to see very strong engagement metrics that include watch time that remains close to an hour-a-day mark, despite the plethora of competing content. As per the Q3 FY21 results, ALTBalaji is adding over 20,000 to 22,000 subscriptions a day in this extremely thriving OTT business. We sold 1.6 Mn+ subscriptions in the third quarter on the back of a super-strong content lineup, and a strategic increase in marketing spend. The OTT platform also saw multiple new shows being added, taking the total number of shows on their platform to 77, which makes it one of the most diverse OTT platforms with content catering across demographics as per the viewers' choice. Q. What are some top OTT trends/viewer preferences you have witnessed over the past year? Pantvaidya: OTT platforms have started experimenting with varied genres of content, which has led to the growth and expansion of web business. OTT has gained significant momentum, the credit for which to an extent goes to digitization, affordable internet plans, rise in smartphone consumption patterns, among other factors. India is not only one of the fastest-growing media and entertainment markets globally but is also well poised to keep this momentum ablaze. It will make India and the globe at large, more digital-savvy; creating a larger sample size of the audience for the content, whether originals, movies, news, music, or sports, available on OTT platforms. Q. What are ALTBalaji's content production and curation strategy? Where does the focus lie and why? Pantvaidya: With the next billion internet users hailing from the Hindi heartlands across the Tier 2, 3, and 4 cities, we are focusing on this electrifying market. Showcasing a high sense of pro-activeness in the situation, we were able to do many marketing innovations over the past few months. This has helped us curate more digital touchpoints that help us reach out to our viewers in a host of interactive and engaging ways and uplift their viewing experience. There is a huge churn issue in the OTT industry. What works optimally for us is to focus on consumer segmentation, mapping audience behaviour, focused customer retention, optimizing customer life cycle, and progressive strategies for onboarding new consumer segments; who are new to the internet or women in smaller markets, etc. Our content strategy has always been aimed at mass India across segments of the audience and continues to do so, however, our content today allows people to do family viewing as well as individual viewing as per each individual's taste &amp; preference. With a strategy to focus on youth programming for the country, ALTBalaji's offerings include premium, disruptive content, and original series across genres. With originality, courage, and relentlessness at its core, ALTBalaji's range, stands out for being avant-garde, non-conformist, inclusive, effervescent, and has something for everyone. Q. The market now has many big and small players vying for consumer attention. What do you think is the future of OTT in India? Pantvaidya: As per a report by PwC on Global Entertainment &amp; Media Outlook: 2020-2024, India is the fastest-growing OTT market at 28.6 percent CAGR; to become the sixth-largest market in 2024. At ALTBalaji, we intend to be the dominant player catering to this market especially tier II, tier III towns, and hinterlands at price points that reflect affordability desired by them and testified basis our consumption data from these markets for 77 shows over the last three years. In the upcoming quarter, we will focus on building a content bouquet that serves inclusive and individualistic viewing, for which, we have ramped our production machinery to be able to create at least 40 shows a year targeted at these markets. We have also created an efficient model to manage costs at less than one-third of what the market spends today while continuing to reign as a leader in the number of original show launches. We believe that we can target growth in the youth segment in mass India over and above male and female target audience aged between 20-40 and intend to double our direct subscriptions to double-digit figures in the coming year. While the pandemic year 2020 redefined how content will be consumed  the year 2021 will chart new business alliances and revenue models for platforms to acquire direct subscriptions. Due to the Covid-19 impact, new consumers are coming from the heartland and we are riding that wave. The report from FICCI and E&amp;Y has predicted 30-35 million paying subscribers on OTT platforms alone in the year 2021, and we are excited about carving a substantial pie out of the same. 2020 has also played a catalytic process in putting us on track to become the first profitable OTT platform, and we seek to break even and become an Rs 150 crore entity with at least 100 original shows by 2021. To further penetrate the Hindi heartlands, we will work on simplifying our UI/UX further, by bringing in voice search, one button click registration, as well as easy payment modules in retail and digital. Q. The Indian diaspora makes for a significant chunk of your viewers. Does that influence your approach? Pantvaidya: At ALTBalaji, we have always focused on massification and dominating the Hindi-speaking markets. Our goal to curate clutter-breaking and relatable content has been consistent right from the very beginning, and we shall continue to massify our content across urban and rural India. 59% of our consumers are from the non-metro and tier 2/tier 3 towns and cities, and this rise in viewership over the past few months is only going to see us work towards entertaining the Bharat audience with new exciting offerings in the months to come. We have always believed in creating diverse shows with stories that are unique, untold, and undiscovered. Over the past couple of years, we have taken narratives on the screen that no one would dare explore. Providing a healthy mix of genres to the viewer, each of our shows has been made keeping in mind their interests, amongst other crucial parameters. Q. What's next for ALTBalaji? Pantvaidya: ALTBalaji has been working towards its goals and is the first OTT platform already on the road to profitability. With our costs getting controlled and the loss margin further reducing at the end of the current fiscal, we are aiming to break even soon. Our shows, which even launched 3 years ago, are still popular amongst audiences and relevant even in today's date. In addition to that, we cater to a diverse set of audiences across the length and breadth of the country. A host of our Hindi offerings have also been dubbed in Indian and International languages like Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Bhasa, Arabic, etc. amongst others. We shall continue to focus on expanding our language content library in the coming years. Beauty e-commerce during lockdown In the last one year the <keyword id="2902598" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="beauty-and-wellness">beauty and wellness</keyword> category in e-commerce has been one of the fastest growing sectors. “Beauty &amp; wellness is one sector that has witnessed an unprecedented order volume growth of over 130% as compared to the last year. This is more than six times the overall e-commerce growth,” said a report by Unicommerce on India’s online retail market. That explains the fast rise of beauty retail <keyword id="6362513" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="startups">startups</keyword> like Nykaa, which has solidified an online as well as offline presence. The beauty e-commerce platform has also announced major sales and forayed into the home and travel care essentials category during the past few months. “We have seen favorable trends in customer buying behavior including higher AOVs (average order volumes) as customers are willing to spend more on platforms such as Nykaa. While personal care is growing for us, we are seeing an overall return in demand across traditional categories such as make up and are currently tracking higher than pre-lockdown numbers,” a Nykaa spokesperson told Business Insider. At home, Do-It-Yourself With people staying away from salons, quick home solutions became important. As non-essential deliveries began, trimmers and grooming devices saw a surge in demand across e-commerce platforms like Amazon, Flipkart, Snapdeal and Paytm Mall. The beauty and wellness category has seen a 57% jump in demand in June 2020 as compared to February 2020, according to the Unicommerce report. From women resorting to YouTube tutorials to cut their hair to taking care of their own beauty needs, DIY kits are the flavour of the season. “In our case things came back to business-as-usual on the skincare and haircare fronts. People were ordering a lot more of specialist solutions, face packs, scrubs and creams. Our skin care kits are seeing excellent demand. These have always been about DIY skin care at home, and therefore ideally suited in a "locked down" environment,” said Shankar Prasad, Founder of beauty and wellness startup Plum. And for those not indulging in DIY, home services came to the rescue. Even in men’s grooming, after months of growing out their hair, men's haircuts become the most in-demand service for a home services startup Urban Company. “Relatively speaking, men’s grooming people tried DIY, but cutting your hair is fairly problematic so its rebounding faster and that category has grown five times from where we were pre-COVID, but their consumption in beauty beyond that is limited,” said Mukund Kulashekaran, SVP of Business, Urban Company. For women, Kulashekaran says its a mixed response as the main trigger for demand has been the need to go back to office or festivals. “Otherwise people will make-do for sometime with alternative versions of waxing for instance. I would say one in two women are being safe even now. However, Delhi has come back for us to 70-80% of pre-COVID levels while Tier II and III cities, which haven’t yet really seen the impact of COVID-19, have bounced back 100%,” he said. The future – Will we go to the salon? As salons open up and pictures of beauticians wearing full gear – PPE kits, face shields, and masks, trend on social media — the question remains, whether people find it safe to venture out. Experts believe that while at-home solutions will continue to reign supreme for another year, it's too short a time to change behaviour. And people will turn to stylists soon. “Making yourself look good is not an easy task. There’s a reason why people have been opting to go to stylists over the years. As soon as aspects of socialization come back, people will go back to salons or ordering services at home. In the near future, consumption will remain low but I don’t see people replacing it,” said Kulashekaran. And when it comes to the sale of beauty products, companies will have to look at an omnichannel strategy as especially with beauty products people would want to try before buying – it’s very experiential. “COVID-19 has accelerated the jump to digital buying by a few years. This kind of push has made people somewhat agnostic to where they are buying their products from. It will be interesting to see how brick and mortar plays into this omnichannel strategy,” said Gandhi in the Goldman Sachs chat. M&amp;A activities will grow From a business perspective, mergers and acquisitions in the beauty industry too are set to grow. The Goldman Sachs exec said that globally companies are aggressively pursuing opportunities in the space, which will help them modernise their business and become category leaders, technology-driven, or tap into a new market. In India too, deal activity has been seen in the beauty and wellness category. Earlier,the beauty marketplace MyGlamm had acquired the Priyanka Gill-led startup PopXO. Most recently, Lotus Herbals acquired the whole business of the startup SoulTree. “We have been scanning the market for a premium certified organic Ayurvedic brand that resonates with modern consumers and SoulTree checked all the boxes,” said Nitin Passi, Joint Managing Director of Lotus Herbals.
