<ul><li><keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>’s ecommerce market is expected to reach $130 billion by 2025. </li><li>Social ecommerce firms in India like Meesho are performing better than traditional ecommerce firms. </li><li>The world’s biggest ecommerce company is struggling to gain a foothold in India’s Tier 2 and 3 cities due to regulatory setbacks.</li></ul><keyword id="18635" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="amazon" source="Orion">Amazon</keyword> marked a spectacular entry into India in 2013 and not just because <keyword id="191583" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="jeff-bezos" source="Orion">Jeff Bezos</keyword> sat atop a colourful truck or it invested $7 billion into the market. India is one of the biggest emerging ecommerce markets globally, estimated to reach $130 billion by 2025. Almost ten years later, its success is being questioned by a wealth management firm, Bernstein, in its latest report. Amazon is now the second largest player behind Flipkart with a gross merchandise value of $18-20 billion and has over 170 million products. But it’s yet to turn profitable in a market where the average order value is below $10 (approx. ₹800). “Besides growth-related investments, profitability has also been impacted by a higher mix of low margin product categories (e.g., smartphones with sub 5% net margins). Amazon has struggled to scale volumes in higher margin categories such as fashion and beauty and personal care,” said the Bernstein report. Fashion has seen the highest growth in the last few years, and so has grocery. But the latter is led by quick commerce players like Dunzo, Zepto and <keyword id="12724311" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="blinkit" source="Orion">Blinkit</keyword>. Amazon and Flipkart are market leaders in mobiles and consumer electronics. But the share of this segment in the ecommerce market is declining. Indian regulations give <keyword id="10926" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="reliance" source="Orion">Reliance</keyword> an edge over Amazon In spite of having 700,000 sellers on its platform, Amazon is yet to gain ground in a very important category in India — tier 2 and tier 3 markets. As per the report, these markets account for around 50% of all e-commerce sales, and they’re growing. “Reliance leads in India with a strong 1P business with over 15,000 store retail footprints. Flipkart is the frontrunner in the apparel category and social ecommerce firm Meesho is winning in tier 2/3 cities where Amazon struggles to perform,” it said. 1P business is where retailers have an online presence like Reliance with a wide brick and mortar footprint. Amazon however is a 3P player who works with sellers. The regulations in India are skewed towards the former, and tougher for MNCs. “Regulations don't allow for an inventory-led 1P model for a foreign entity like Amazon. The company has made investments into local retailers like <keyword id="64373" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="shoppers-stop" source="Orion">Shoppers Stop</keyword> (fashion), More (grocery), and a rumoured stake in <keyword id="1560087" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="ecom-express" source="Orion">Ecom Express</keyword> (logistics) but integration has been limited as the regulations don't allow for full control,” the report said. At the same time, its key competitor Reliance scaled up its ecommerce operations to around 19% of core retail sales, thanks to its 15,000 stores and ability to manage an inventory-led model. “Amazon's management attrition has also increased recently, potentially signaling difficulties achieving desired scale,” the report said. Amazon’s worldwide consumer CEO Dave Clark left the company after 23 years in 2022. Here’s where ecommerce growth is at The sweet spot for ecommerce growth in India is Tier 2+, the report says, which is a market that’s seeking products tailored to their needs. <keyword id="3030142" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="myglamm" source="Orion">MyGlamm</keyword>, <keyword id="1932100" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="bewakoof" source="Orion">Bewakoof</keyword> and Sleepy Owl are able to achieve this with a large chunk of their business coming from these towns. However, due to regulations, Amazon cannot make headway here too. The inability to operate a 1P model has limited the availability of private labels versus the competition, which further pressures margins, the report says. “Despite the importance of the market, we estimate that it contributes less than 5% to Amazon's overall value. At Amazon's current valuation, we see the India business as a call option for Amazon investors, as long as the company is disciplined around capital allocation,” says Bernstein. Amazon, Wipro Consumer and Ascent Capital invest in beauty brand MyGlamm

<ul><li><keyword id="6358096" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="snapchat" source="Orion">Snapchat</keyword> now has a monthly reach of 100 million users in India.</li><li>The company announced this milestone at its second ‘<keyword id="12397826" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="snap-in-india" source="Orion">Snap in India</keyword>’ event today.</li><li>It also announced AR partnerships with Flipkart, Zomato, Sugar Cosmetics and MyGlamm.</li></ul>Snap Inc., hosted its second ‘Snap in India’ event on Wednesday, where its Chief Executive Officer (CEO) <keyword id="1659524" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="evan-spiegel" source="Orion">Evan Spiegel</keyword> announced a major milestone of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/apps/news/snapchat-app-witnesses-over-150-growth-in-daily-active-users-in-india/articleshow/85394136.cms" data-type="tilCustomLink">Snapchat</a> reaching 100 million monthly users in India. This is a big jump from the 60 million user base it revealed earlier this year. The company also announced partnerships with Flipkart, Zomato, Sugar Cosmetics and MyGlamm to integrate its AR technology into these platforms. Snap did not reveal its daily active users (DAUs) or monthly active users (MAUs) for Snapchat in India but it said that the app has been witnessing over a 100% growth in DAUs. “For the last seven quarters we’ve been growing at more than 100% when it comes to our daily active users,” Nana Murugesan, managing director of international markets at Snap Inc., told Business Insider in an interview. The app has been witnessing an upward trend in numbers ever since Snap opened its first India office in 2019. It also became the fifth most downloaded social media app in India, according to App Annie. But the app is yet to break into the mainstream social media scene. On this Murugesan said, “We’ve always never looked at ourselves as a traditional platform. We’ve always taken a very innovative approach. The good news is once our community embraces us we see really good stickiness. The retention metrics are very strong so we’re kind of happy with that. We’re happy that every platform has its own place. We’re happy with where we are with respect to doubling down on a creation first approach, a camera first approach and then using that as a way to drive those human connections.” In India, the two key areas where Snapchat is seeing the most growth are augmented reality (AR) and chatting. “One thing which is great about India is that people are really embracing augmented reality and the camera so definitely the camera is extremely engaging and very very strong. As we invest more and more in that particular area that’s seeing very healthy and strong growth.” Murugesan also attributes content partnerships as an accelerator for the platform’s growth in India. At the event, Snap announced that it is partnering with e-commerce platform Flipkart that will use <keyword id="9484375" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="snapchat-ar" source="Orion">Snapchat AR</keyword> for an immersive shopping experience. Snapchat users will also get to virtually try on makeup from Sugar Cosmetics and MyGlamm. Zomato is also coming to Snapchat with the food aggregator integrated into Snap Map, which is an in-app map. Snapchat users will have access to restaurant information including hours of operation, locations, contact details, customer reviews, menus, and photographs. They will also be able to place food orders from Snapchat itself. Another key area of partnership and growth for Snapchat is with Android OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturer). India is now the first and only market where Snapchat is pre-installed in over 100 million devices. The company has successfully partnered with all the top Android OEMs to pre-install its app on their devices. It recently announced a first-of-its-kind partnership with Google for the Pixel 6 series where the app opens from the lock screen itself. Murugesan did not reveal if we will see such a partnership with more OEMs, but he did say that the company is “talking to multiple partners“ and wants to “bring this to as many partners as possible”. Snapchat has also integrated its AR filters into the camera app of the JioPhone Next smartphone that’s due to launch next week. Going forward, Snap plans to double down on community engagement through AR in India, and help creators monetise on the platform. “We initially focused on helping creators build their audiences, but now we are helping them monetise too. We’re actually introducing features where fans of creators can gift them. So if you like a creator or really enjoyed something you can give a gift so that’s a way of monetisation. According to reports, the grooming market in India is valued at nearly Rs 50,000 crore and 85% of the business here comes from women, notably professionals with increasing disposable incomes in cities. While the industry quickly grew in investment in 2015, the next year saw many of them shutting down due to high losses. While VanityCube was acquired by VLCC, Vyomo got acquired by Naturals and Quikr acquired StayGlad players like Urbanclap, MyGlamm and Housejoy have reported increased revenue in the past year steering the roadblocks. While this startup also provides its personal grooming services at home, it has a unique billing system which makes it affordable to most working women. The company charges its customers on per minute basis for Rupees 6 on any beauty service they want with extra service charge for better brands. Another way to book can be through the call centre and Whatsapp which makes this startup more inclusive to people that might not have a smartphone or omnipresent internet connection. Come 2026, a quarter of all sales in the retail world (except grocery) will be online, predicts a Redseer report on Digital Disruptors. The report picked 75 companies in the crowded online space as digital disruptors, who cumulatively currently generate $15 billion in sales online, and ranked them based on the dominance in their category, and online focus. Surprisingly, traditional companies Hindustan Unilever and Aditya Birla Fashion &amp; Retail were ranked as top digital disruptors in grocery &amp; personal care, and fashion &amp; home categories, respectively. In the third category of electronics &amp; appliances, however, digital-first brand boAt was given the numero uno rank. The animal spirits In the jungle that is e-commerce, these 75 companies were also categorised as elephants, tigers, rabbits and turtles. No prizes for guessing who elephants are – typically legacy players who used to dominate their category offline, and have managed to build an online presence. “The sheer scale of elephants and brand pull has enabled them to get significant sales online, but e-commerce still contributes a relatively small share of their revenues,” the report said. Adidas, Zara, Nestle and Marico are some of the other brands listed under elephants. The next are the tigers – early movers in the e-commerce space that have scaled up rapidly. Licious, WakeFit, Mamaearth and Xiaomi are some of the brands in this part of the quadrant that is dominated by digital-first brands. But, Asus and BBK, which are not born digital also made it to this list. “Tigers have built online dominance in their categories. They drive a significant share of sales from e-commerce but have also built a strong offline footprint,” the report said. Rabbits: Yet to win the race The third category is rabbits, which are exclusively digital-first brands that have leveraged e-commerce to scale up but do not have a substantial market share. Most of the brands in this category, like Nothing, Beardo, Sugar Cosmetics, MyGlamm, Minimalist, Country Delight and more – are from the fashion and personal care space. Thanks to high growth in e-commerce sales, these players will benefit but will face challenges from elephants, who have established their presence both online and offline. The last set of companies in the quadrant are the slow-moving turtles – legacy brands that have done well in e-commerce but have a lower market share online relative to others. Fossil, Aachi Masala, Prestige and LG Electronics are some of the brands listed as turtles. The reverse migrants Digital-first brands account for 25% of all the sales in the e-commerce pie. However, now even digital-first brands are going offline, challenging traditional players in the turf erasing the battle lines. On an average, digital-first brands derive over 75% of their sales online while traditional brands do over 30% of their sales online. “Players in the top quadrants — tigers and rabbits — will have to enhance their focus on offline sales, while the bottom quadrant — elephants and turtles – will have to approach e-commerce aggressively,” says Mohit Rana, partner at Redseer. E-commerce is expected to drive retail growth and is projected to grow at a compounded annual rate of 27% to reach $163 billion by 2026. That’s almost three times the growth in the overall retail market, as per Redseer. “Clearly, traditional companies that are over indexed on offline sales have a short window to enhance their share in e-commerce.They need to focus on building their digital capabilities and adopting an omnichannel approach to succeed in the market,” said Redseer. Large-scale traditional players, even with a low percentage of e-commerce sales, have substantial absolute online sales, the report notes.
