However, the report notes a shift in market dynamics, with the momentum factor, which has outperformed since the COVID-19 bottom, beginning to lose its dominance. At the same time, the quality factor, which had underperformed over the last four years, is now seeing a resurgence, potentially indicating a change in market leadership that could favour quality-orientated funds, both active and passive. The report highlights the critical role government spending has played in the recovery, with a focus on capital investments crucial for future growth. However, contributions from the private corporate sector and households have lagged. It also draws attention to a slowdown in India's per capita consumption, approaching lows seen in previous cycles. Given that consumption accounts for around 60% of GDP, it is vital that this sector grows at a rate exceeding GDP growth to stimulate private capital expenditure. In September, inflows into SIPs hit an all-time high of ₹16,042.06 crore, according to Association of Mutual Funds of India (AMFI). Golden Oldies: The mutual fund schemes that have stood the test of market cycles over 20 years

New Delhi, Asset management companies launched 212 <keyword id="20372350" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="new-fund-offerings" source="keywords">new fund offerings</keyword> mobilising Rs 63,854 crore in 2023, marginally higher from previous year, on the back of significant uptrends in broader markets. In comparison, Asset Management Companies (AMCs) garnered Rs 62,187 crore through 228 New Fund Offerings (NFOs) in 2022. Further, they collected Rs 99,704 crore in 2021 and Rs 53,703 crore in 2020, according to data compiled by <keyword id="20372349" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="morningstar-india" source="keywords">Morningstar India</keyword>. "The trend towards the financialisation of assets in India is unmistakable. Aligned with changing consumption behaviours and a need for a higher standard of living, investors recognise the importance of long-term investing. The COVID-19 pandemic underscored the necessity for financial planning and the creation of liquid assets to address emergencies and pave the way for wealth-building," FYERS Research said in its report. It further said that "despite indices exhibiting strength, propelled by robust economic activity, steady <keyword id="19951327" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gst" source="keywords">GST</keyword> collections, and confidence in government reforms and policies, anticipating a similar outperformance in 2024 may not be prudent. Valuations across various market capitalisations look elevated, advocating a cautious approach to direct equities in the short term". As per the FYERS report, the January-March period of 2023 saw the highest number of NFOs at 57. However, the peak fund mobilisation occurred in the July-September period, totalling Rs 22,049 crore. Additionally, 29 thematic or sectoral funds raised an aggregate of Rs 17,946 crore in 2023. With an increased risk appetite for equities and awareness of products and offerings, retail investors opted for higher-risk products like thematic and sectoral funds compared to other products. Usually, NFOs come during a surging market when investor sentiments are high and optimistic. The NFOs were floated to capitalise on the mood of investors and attract their investment as they were willing to invest at that time. Industry experts said that the stock market performance along with the positive investor sentiments led to higher fund mobilisation through NFOs in 2023. In the year 2023, Nifty 50 index delivered a return of 20 per cent, majorly supported by earnings growth. <keyword id="19994732" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nifty-midcap" source="keywords">Nifty Midcap</keyword> and <keyword id="20118967" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nifty-smallcap" source="keywords">Nifty Smallcap</keyword> indices recorded impressive returns of 47 per cent and 56 per cent, respectively. Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) infused a substantial Rs 1.7 lakh crore into the market and the infusion played a pivotal role in propelling Indian equities beyond the USD 4 trillion market capitalization milestone. Overall, the mutual fund industry saw a net inflow of Rs 2.74 lakh crore in 2023 as compared to an inflow of over Rs 71,000 crore in the preceding year. The huge inflow could be on the back of sustained investors' interest in equity funds, arbitrage funds, and index funds &amp; ETFs. Debt schemes experienced a net outflow of Rs 46,100 crore last year, while equity schemes saw substantial inflows of Rs 1.62 lakh crore, closely followed by hybrid category schemes at Rs 93,208 crore.

The allure of attractive returns stands out as just one of the contributing factors driving the increased interest in sectoral/thematic funds. AMFI data indicates a heightened investor preference for sectoral/thematic funds targeting specific sectors, like <keyword id="44530" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="psu" source="Orion">PSU</keyword> companies, over diversified funds encompassing various sectors. During market upswings, it's typical for investors to lean towards thematic investing, aiming to outperform the market by focusing on specific themes or sectors. “Sectoral or <keyword id="917586" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="thematic-funds" source="Orion">thematic funds</keyword> come into focus when the markets are doing well. Now that we have had three years of really good performance by the markets, people want to go down the risk curve,” says Mihir Vora, CFO, Trust <keyword id="6357979" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mutual-funds" source="Orion">Mutual Funds</keyword>. In 2023, under thematic funds, the PSU sector has done well giving returns of almost 54%. Under <keyword id="6022989" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sectoral" source="Orion">sectoral</keyword> funds, infrastructure funds have done well. Giving returns of about 40%. Technology funds have done well, giving returns of over 27%. However, the banking sector has underperformed, it has given returns of around 18% but lower than that of PSU or infrastructure funds. Consumption funds have given returns of around 24%. “Markets go through periods of rotation where different sectors and themes come to the fore from time to time. For instance in 2023, PSU, manufacturing and infrastructure were some of the better performing themes, while consumption, FMCG and financials relatively lagged,” says Kaustubh Belapurkar, director, manager research, Morningstar Investment Research India (formerly known as Morningstar Investment Adviser India). What can we expect in 2024 Indian thematic funds enjoyed a stellar 2023, fueled by government tailwinds propelling infrastructure and PSU sector and themes. However, as we step into 2024, things might not be the same. Global economic headwinds may cast a shadow over international themes, demanding cautious navigation. Nonetheless, selective investors, particularly those focused on government-backed initiatives and long-term growth trends, could still unearth alpha-generating opportunities. “Banking is expected to do well. Capital goods and infrastructure should continue to do well. Plus growth as a style is likely to outperform value unlike this year,” says Vora. What investors should keep in mind “Investors are best served by investing in diversified equity funds, where managers will take graded overweight or underweight exposures in sectors depending on their outlook,” says Belapurkar. Thematic funds are focussed on a few themes or sectors or style. “So it is a little more risky than diversified funds. Basically it should be used by investors who are themselves taking the call of sectors of themes. It is an active call that the investor has to make himself. The investor needs to decide which sector he is bullish on and take a call,” says Vora. He adds that investors should realise that when the markets have already done well for a long period of time they need to be very conscious that when they are adding thematic funds to their portfolio, they are adding risks at a higher level. So one needs to be very choosy of what one is getting into and really understand the risks.

But how many Indians – even at senior levels – ever come close to an annual income of ₹50 lakh? That’s what Jigna Alpesh Shah thought before she enrolled as a mutual fund distributor back in 2006. Today she manages assets of more than ₹100 crore in Anand, better known as the milk capital of India. She is a housewife between 6 am and 10 am and a wealth manager after that. Her vocation allows her to wear whichever hat she chooses to wear during the course of the day – which can be that of a mother, housewife or career woman. As the equity cult travels deeper into India, many women like Jigna have found their calling as advisors and distributors of financial products. Like the services industry, <keyword id="155162" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mutual-fund-distributors" source="Orion">mutual fund distributors</keyword> like NJ Wealth have also learned that the failure rate of women is very low compared to men as they are persistent and patient. In addition, they don’t easily indulge in misselling just to meet targets. As distributors of financial products, women can choose their workdays rather than adhere to a 9 am to 6 pm grind. Importantly, distribution is a lucrative vocation as a high performing distributor can easily earn trail income of ₹60 lakh p.a. This is big because merely 3.2 mn Indians are above the ₹5 lakh income bracket and they collectively account for 76% of income tax receipts of the government. In a country where the average annual income of a senior professional in India ranges between ₹18-25 lakh and a senior resident doctor’s annual income is between ₹50 and ₹60 lakh, an eight figure salary is surely a pipe dream for most. But if you are ambitious, as a mutual fund distributor you can easily earn a trail income of ₹50 lakh or more, provided you are willing to work hard for the first five years. It is perhaps for these compelling reasons that many more women are joining the equity cult, not just as investors but as advisors. Explains Misbah Baxamusa,CEO of NJ Wealth, “We at NJ Wealth found that women need flexibility in their careers and it is hard for them to hold regular jobs. Being a mutual fund distributor can give them the flexibility they need to get started and in addition to that there is minimal investment needed. We believe that the concept of saving and commitment comes naturally to them. Compared to their male counterparts, women don’t quit easily, once they enroll with us. They stick through the process and build up the business. We have several women today who are managing AUMs of over ₹100 crore.” Today, women account for 15-20% of NJ Wealth’s total distributors. NJ Wealth is focused on enrolling more women as it is a win win for both sides. Compared to industry ratio, it has a much higher ratio of <keyword id="19662661" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="women-distributors" source="Orion">women distributors</keyword> but Baxamusa feels that a lot more can join the gravy train. <div type="image" title="Jigna Shah" msid="105950515" hostid="261"></div> Jigna Shah was a housewife when she moved to Anand in 2002 with her husband. Though she is a BSc graduate, she started dabbling in financial products as an insurance agent. She enrolled with NJ in 2006 and now manages an AUM of ₹103 crore and is the highest AUM holder at NJ Wealth’s Anand branch (Gujarat). She says: “I have seen the journey of mutual fund investments and how it gained momentum after 2008-09. It took me over 10 years to take my AUM to ₹100 crore, but now I am looking forward to doubling my AUM in the next five years.” What has also helped her growth is the better understanding now that Indians have on building wealth through investments in financial assets unlike the past. Goal based investing has really caught on, she says. <div type="image" title="dipti" msid="105607260" hostid="261"></div> Sourcing customers was a little harder ten years ago, but with social media gaining traction that has also become easy. Sixty-nine year old Dipti Pourana has been distributing financial products for years now, but she says her business hit the fast track after she enrolled with NJ Wealth as her customers refused to invert unless she was their distributor. The technology platform of NJ is immensely user-friendly that makes the lives of distributors very easy. Pourana became the breadwinner after her husband died. Today she manages an AUM of over ₹200 crore. She says: “Client acquisition has also changed over the years. At the beginning of your career as a mutual fund distributor, life can be hard but over the years, the magic of trail commission will kick in.” <div type="image" title="aranpreet" msid="105717868" hostid="261"></div> The story of Aranpreet Kaur is no different from Pourana. Kaur lost her husband during Covid and since then she has been in the driving seat of their wealth advisory business in Chandigarh. She along with her husband started their investment and financial services company in 2015. Kaur thinks that women make very good financial planners and advisors as they are adept at managing homes. She says: “The reason why women can be more successful in this business is because they understand the problem and suggest solutions to clients, unlike men who are more focused on selling.” Kaur’s pet project is to provide financial literacy to young students, who she still teaches in college. She has taken her college lecturer’s role to the next level by conducting classes on investments and savings. She says: “I am a lecturer at SD College but I am very passionate about investing. While I still teach, I also conduct seminars and programmes on investing with students because it is important. I even help my staff at home and office to invest in mutual funds so that they can save for their children’s education.” NJ Wealth is not only making their investors rich by deploying their hard earned money into financial instruments but are also making their distributors wealthy. Women distributors rake in the moolah as investors across Bharat say Mutual Funds Sahi Hai

<ul><li><keyword id="6357979" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="mutual-funds" source="Orion">Mutual funds</keyword> raised stakes in the financial services sector as economic activity and consumer demand picked up in July.</li><li>Research reports suggest that the sharp rally in July led to profit booking by mutual funds and investors alike.</li><li>Overall, the Indian mutual fund industry has ₹37.8 lakh crore of assets under its management.</li></ul>Mutual funds continued to plough in money into equities in July, after making purchases of nearly $2 billion in June. And, they are betting on financial services firms the most, as their stake in the overall mutual fund holdings increased to 31.56% from 30.56% in July. According to data from AMFI and ICICI Direct, mutual funds invested over $1 billion in July, and their biggest purchases included <keyword id="830092" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="zomato" source="Orion">Zomato</keyword>, <keyword id="268065" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="hdfc-life-insurance" source="Orion">HDFC Life Insurance</keyword>, and United Phosphorus, among others. Zomato’s purchases came after the stock experienced a major correction after the lock-in period ended in July, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/stock-market/news/why-is-zomato-share-price-down-today/articleshow/93101975.cms">resulting in a 22% correction</a>. Another interesting entry into the list is Wipro, which <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/corporates/news/wipros-net-profit-drops-12-drop-in-q1-as-recession-fears-grip-its-non-us-clients/articleshow/93006573.cms">missed analyst estimates in terms of growth and margin</a>. Its rivals TCS and Infosys have seen mixed movements, with some fund houses paring their stakes while others have added. Overall, the Indian mutual fund industry invested ₹8,900 crore into Indian equities in July, down from ₹15,500 crore in June. “After having seen lows in previous months, the sharp rally in July led to many investors shying away from putting incremental money and few exiting as well during recovery,” said a report by ICICI Direct. Some other of the biggest names that mutual funds purchased includes Rakesh Jhunjhunwala-backed Star Health and the government-owned National Aluminium Company, among others. “On a month-on-month basis, the weights of NBFCs, private banks, consumer, retail, automobiles, capital goods, PSU banks, metals, cement, and media increased, while the weights of oil &amp; gas, technology, telecom, healthcare, and utilities moderated,” said a report by Motilal Oswal. Overall, according to the Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI), the total assets under management (AUM) of the Indian mutual fund industry increased to ₹37.8 lakh crore in July 2022 from ₹35.6 lakh crore in June 2022. There has been a sharp growth in MF AUMs which grew at around 90% in the last five years.
