<ul class="summary-list"><li>Two lintels from ancient Thai religious temples will be returned to <keyword id="3739" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Thailand">Thailand</keyword>.</li><li>A Thai official discovered the lintels while visiting the San Francisco Asian <keyword id="1105" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="art">Art</keyword> Museum.</li><li>After seeing the lintels, he asked for the US to return the relics, sparking a three-year investigation.</li></ul>Two Thai artifacts held at the <a href="https://asianart.org/">Asian Art Museum</a> in San Francisco will be returned to Thailand after Thai officials discovered the pieces had been stolen from the country, according to the <a href="https://www.justice.gov/usao-ndca/pr/united-states-successfully-negotiates-return-two-thai-religious-relics-reported-stolen">Department of Justice</a>.According to court filings, the consul general of the Royal Thai Consulate-General visited the Asian Art Museum in late 2016 when he noticed two prominently displayed Thai lintels. He asked a senior curator at the museum about the origins of the lintels and was told they were donated to the museum. A lintel is a horizontal support structure placed above a window or door frame and can be seen in ancient religious temples in Thailand.Nearly a year later in 2017, the Thai minister of <keyword id="24504" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="culture">culture</keyword> met with a US official in Thailand along with a special agent of the US Department of Homeland Security. At the meeting, the minister of culture told the group Thailand's Fine Arts Department researched the lintels on display and found they came from two ancient temples in Northeastern Thailand. He then relayed a message from the Thai government and asked that the artifacts be returned to the country.<div type="image" title="thai lintel" height="497" width="801" msid="80871289" hostid="261"></div>According to court filings, Thailand has two patrimony laws from 1934 and 1961 restricting the removal of historically or culturally significant art from the country, including lintels. Thai researchers found that both lintels were removed from the country after these laws were passed and were therefore illegally exported from the country.While investigating the lintels, the Thai researchers found they were donated to the US by a collector of Asian art and artifacts from Paris and London. Prosecutors allege the Asian Art Museum knew the lintels were stolen property as the museum had letters from the original collector indicating the lintels were not legally obtained.Despite informing the Asian Arts Museum of its stolen artifacts several times, a federal complaint alleges the museum never attempted to negotiate a return of the artifacts until federal officials brought the issue to the local government of San Francisco, which also dragged its feet. The complaint further notes requests for the city to "adhere to a court-sanctioned process" were unsuccessful, leading the federal government to step in and negotiate the restoration process itself."The theft and trafficking of cultural artifacts is a tradition as old as the cultures they represent," said Special Agent-in-Charge at the Department of Homeland Security Investigations Tatum King. "Returning a nation's precious cultural antiquities promotes goodwill with foreign governments and citizens, while significantly protecting the world's cultural history and knowledge of past civilizations."Both lintels will be returned to Thailand through the DOJ's victim remission program where they will be placed on exhibition in Thailand, according to a <a href="https://www.justice.gov/usao-ndca/pr/united-states-successfully-negotiates-return-two-thai-religious-relics-reported-stolen">press release from the DOJ.</a>

The US agrees to return 2 Thai relics that were illegally obtained and held in the San Francisco Asian Art Museum

The politically charged town of <keyword id="6354931" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Ayodhya">Ayodhya</keyword> in Uttar Pradesh would have a state of-the-art Ram museum to promote <keyword id="6363500" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="ramayana">Ramayana</keyword>. <keyword id="6358079" type="POSITION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Tourism-Minister">Tourism Minister</keyword> <keyword id="210147" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Mahesh-Sharma">Mahesh Sharma</keyword> told the Economic Times that the <keyword id="6360789" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Modi-Government">Modi government</keyword> is coming up with the museum, which would be part of the proposed 'Ramayana circuit'. Fortunately, the ‘disputed site’, the reason for all the battles, would not be touched by the project. "This will be an exclusive museum which will be part of a larger holistic plan. The idea is to depict the mahima (grandeur) of <keyword id="353792" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Lord-Ram">Lord Ram</keyword> and Ramayana," Sharma said. "It is on high priority and the scale will depend on funds available. We will do this next year." The museum would be build on the model of the Swaminarayan <keyword id="76721" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Akshardham-Temple">Akshardham temple</keyword> in Delhi - which features a sound and light show, boat ride and a film on Swaminarayan - and house archaeological material related to the deity. 

	The minister said work would soon begin on the detailed project report. 
 

	In order to again turn Ayodhya into a major cultural hub, the Modi government plans to develop all sites related to Lord Ram in and around the town.. When asked about the political ramifications, the minister said that the museum may reach the state of completion in 2017, a time when UP elections are due. He added, "Tourism we can develop. We are not saying we are going to make a Ram mandir there."
 

	The tourism minister further stated that the government is already working on a chain of five circuits. "For every year we will declare a different circuit. Ramayana circuit will start with the centre somewhere in Ayodhya and Chitrakoot and definitely we go to Makohda in Basti, then Janaki kund in Unnao and nearby areas and places relevant to the life of Ram...that is our idea," he said. 
 

	The Centre would also host what it calls are cultural activities revolving around Ram and Ramayana at events abroad, including festivals and travel marts. According to officials of the Tourism Ministry, the government has already asked Uttar Pradesh to send a proposal for the project under the Centre's Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spirituality Augmentation Drive (PRASAD) scheme. 
 

	"We have requested the state government to develop the proposal under the PRASAD scheme. Cost estimates are open-ended as of now and depend on the outline and scale of the proposal. This is actually an inter-state project as well so we will talk to other states as well," Tourism Secretary Lalit Pawar said. Rakesh Tiwari, director-general of Archaeological Survey of India (<keyword id="46215" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="ASI">ASI</keyword>), said that discussions on the Ramayana circuit are still at a preliminary stage and the ASI would help the tourism ministry with all related inputs. 

	"We will help develop the circuit in whichever way the government asks us to. Cultural bodies are also going to be roped in to bring alive the folklore and legends associated with Ramayana," said Tiwari.

 Google has built a virtual museum 

The US-based tech giant has added over 2,000 new images and 70 virtual exhibits to its platform through partnerships with various Indian institutes to give a glimpse of the rich Indian heritage to viewers across the world. Thus we can now see the exhibits from Kolkata's Victoria Memorial Hall, Dastkari Haat Samiti and Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute online.
 "In the last two years, we have seen a huge traction to <keyword id="6355629" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Google">Google</keyword> Cultural Institute. We have seen over 240 million page views. However, that has not affected these institutes negatively and they have seen higher footfalls," Google Cultural Institute Director <keyword id="255179" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Amit-Sood">Amit Sood</keyword> told PTI. 

	Google is also helping some of these institutes to make the content even more accessible through mobile apps to help them showcase their exhibits, he added. 
 

	The unveiled collection also includes 26 new virtual tours of famous sites like the Ekattarso Mahadeva Temple and the royal saloon that once was part of the Palace on Wheels. 
 "India has a rich heritage and culture and it has been our endeavour to showcase this to the world. Technology will play a crucial role in transforming and building a truly Digital India and in getting Indian culture and heritage online," Minister of State for Tourism and Culture (Independent Charge) <keyword id="210147" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Mahesh-Sharma">Mahesh Sharma</keyword> told PTI. 

	Google Cultural Institute was launched in 2012 in India with the National Museum and the National Gallery of Modern Art in Delhi as initial partners and now has 18 partners.

Now you can see the latest exhibits of Indian museums on Google

Indian <keyword id="6354814" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="prime-minister-Narendra-Modi">Prime Minister Narendra Modi</keyword> arrived in China on the first leg of his three-nation tour on Thursday. At the airport of Xian city, hometown of China President Xi Jinping, he was welcomed by a group of Chinese children, who performed a traditional dance.

After his arrival, clad in a crisp white kurta and chudidaar, Modi visited the much famed Terracotta Army museum, which houses a collection of terracotta sculptures depicting the armies of Qin Shi Huang, the first Emperor of China. 
 
The ‘Terracotta Warriors and Horses’ Museum, a UNESCO world heritage site, is a form of funerary art buried with the Emperor in 210–209 BC whose purpose was to protect the Emperor in his afterlife. 
 
The army was created to help the Emperor rule in the afterlife. Chinese records state that the site was discovered in 1974 by farmers digging a well.

Modi also signed the visitor’s book at the museum in which he wrote: “The Terracotta Army is a heritage of the world. It is a testimony to China’s civilizational achievements. I am deeply impressed by t he extraordinary care with which this precious heritage has been preserved.”

Later on, he also visited Daxingshan Temple and saw translations of Buddhist sutras, which were brought by a monk to Xian from India

The Indian Prime Minister is also scheduled to meet Xi later in the afternoon, in an unusual departure from the protocol as top Chinese leaders almost never travel outside Beijing to meet senior foreign guests on bilateral visits. 
 
Modi, who will be in China till May 16, will visit Beijing and Shanghai. 
 
Meanwhile, during his visit, Modi and Xi are expected to address the contentious border issue, which has been hampering negotiations since 13 years. 
 
China's Ambassador to India, Le Yucheng, told a news channel that deals worth $10 billion were also expected to be signed during Indian PM’s visit. 
 
When Xi had visited India last year in September, China had announced $20 billion in investments over five years, including setting up of two industrial parks.
