More than half of the population residing in slums in three different regions in Mumbai contracted coronavirus and developed its anti-bodies, according to a sero-surveillance study conducted by the city’s civic body, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFRE) and NITI Aayog (India’s premier think tank). <div type="image" title="Mumbai Sero Survey" msid="77238688" hostid="261"></div> Mumbai, where 800,000 people live in slums, has reported over 110,000 infections and 6,000 fatalities till June 29. The interesting thing about the study is it was only looking for asymptomatic individuals. Symptomatic people are going to the system, they are getting treated, managed etc. Asymptomatic is something none of us could understand,” Dr. Marcus Ranney, General Manager (India) Thrive Global explained. This comes a week after a Delhi government survey stated that 30% of the people living in the national capital had anti-bodies of COVID-19. However, the jury is still out on whether herd immunity can stave off COVID-19 infections in the future. The other downside of living in the hope of herd immunity is that it could put a lot of vulnerable people at risk. “Asymptomatic carry the same viral load as a symptomatic patient and they are not protected. An asymptomatic carrier is as lethal and as vulnerable as symptomatic. One asymptomatic can spread it to 217 people if the person is in a closed/family range, ” Prof. Dr. Sanjeev Bagai, the chairperson of Nephron Clinics, told Business Insider India Many of these people who get the virus passed on to them could be older people and those with co-morbidities like diabetes, Hepatitis and heart diseases to name a few. India has been the third-worst affected country and has reported 1.5 million cases. And even if a person does develop antibodies to fight COVID-19, they may not stay in the body forever. Research studies across the world have shown that the immunity drops 8 weeks or so after contracting COVID-19, according to Bagai. Even Ranney, who hopes that there will be herd immunity someday, warns against lowering the guard too soon. “We do not know the period of time this immunity lasts. We could see a repeated infection in the same individual (recovered patients). The slums in India's financial capital are showing signs of herd immunity but it is too soon to conclude

Mumbai, Mar 18 () Even as older adults are most likely to be at the receiving end of the pandemic, more than half (52 per cent) of the baby boomers are the least fearful of contracting coronavirus, according to a survey. The older generations of urban India seem to be the least fearful of contracting coronavirus, according to the survey by research firm YouGov survey. Fear is notably lower among baby boomers, with more than half (52 per cent) saying they are not fearful about getting infected, the survey showed. These numbers are considerably higher than that of Gen Z and millennials at 37 per cent and 32 per cent, respectively, it said. Baby boomer is a term used to describe a person who was born between 1946 and 1964, while Gen Z is the generation born between 1995 and 2015. The data for the survey was collected online by YouGov Omnibus from around 1,054 respondents in India between March 10 and 15. The survey also found that in general, more than half (53 per cent) of urban Indians are scared about contracting coronavirus, while 38 per cent are not worried. Among the genders, fear levels are considerably higher among women compared to men (59 per cent against 47 per cent), it said. When it comes to region, the survey showed that north India was the most panic-stricken, with three in five residents (61 per cent) saying they were very scared or fairly scared about contracting the virus. On the other hand, the western region seemed to be the least scared with less than half (46 per cent) of the respondents claiming they are either not very scared or not at all scared about contracting it, it said. Until the last two weeks, new cases were emerging from the northern and southern regions and fewer from the western parts of the country. However, beginning this week, Maharashtra has reported the highest number of cases, which could be the reason for the low level of fears in the western region that might change in the coming weeks. Majority of people taking some kind of safety precautions to protect themselves, including washing hands more frequently or using sanitiser (69 per cent), 59 per cent of the respondents said they are avoiding crowded places and 53 per cent avoiding physical contact with tourists. The RBI has been regularly conducting the survey to elicit subjective views of the households on price movement across various cities of the country. The results of the survey are used as inputs for the monetary policy. The July 2020 round of the Inflation Expectations Survey of Households has been launched, the central bank said in a release on Tuesday. Hansa Research Group, Mumbai has been engaged to conduct the survey of this round on behalf of the RBI over telephone instead of the regular personal interview mode in view of the pandemic. "For this purpose, the selected households will be approached by the agency and they are requested to provide their response over telephone," the release said. The survey aims at capturing subjective assessments on price movements and inflation, of approximately 6,000 households, based on their individual consumption baskets, across 18 cities. The cities that would be covered are Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhopal, <keyword id="50863" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bhubaneswar">Bhubaneswar</keyword>, <keyword id="6360078" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="chandigarh">Chandigarh</keyword>, Chennai, Delhi, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Kolkata, <keyword id="6355192" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Lucknow">Lucknow</keyword>, Mumbai, Nagpur, Patna, Raipur, Ranchi and <keyword id="6357416" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="thiruvananthapuram">Thiruvananthapuram</keyword>. The survey would seek qualitative as well as quantitative responses from households on price changes -- general prices as well as prices of specific product groups -- for the three months ahead as well as in the one year ahead period, as per the release. In the wake of the pandemic, the government released truncated retail inflation data for April and May. The RBI would also conduct July 2020 round of Consumer Confidence Survey (CCS) to seek qualitative responses from households, regarding their sentiments on general economic situation, employment scenario, price level, households' income and spending. The survey, which would also be done over telephone, would cover approximately 5,400 respondents across 13 cities. Expect a call from RBI as an inflation survey is underway

Mumbai, May 5 () A survey has found a vast majority of the citizens -- 86 per cent of those polled to be precise -- are worried about losing their jobs and livelihoods due to the deadly COVID-19 pandemic. Also, a vast majority of those polled (84 per cent) not only believe that the epidemic is still in its early stages and also rapidly accelerating, while those in the US, which is the worst hit with over 68,000 deaths and over 1.3 million infections, Britain and Australia believe the pandemic is tapering off. Hongkongers believe the virus is already tamed. Worries about job losses are the highest in the country as 86 per cent being worried about losing their jobs and livelihood post-COVID-19 lockdowns. In comparison, this is only 31 per cent in Britain, 33 per cent in Australia and 41 per cent in the US and a high 71 per cent Hongkongers fear job loses, says the survey. According to the fourth leg of a five-country (the US, Britain, India, Australia and Hong Kong) online opinion poll by the British research firm Crosby Textor (CT) Group, carried out between April 23 and 27, as much as 84 per cent of Indians polled are very satisfied with the way government has been dealing with the crisis so far, as against on other countries where the popularity of their governments have been plunging. According to Atul Jhamb, chairman of Crosby Textor India, a part of the London-based parent that specialises in opinion polls, strategic communications and a corporate and political advisory, "despite being satisfied with the government efforts to contain the virus, as much as 86 per cent Indians have a high level of concern of losing their livelihood and employment due to the pandemic, which is higher than their peers elsewhere.While 84 per cent Indians are very happy with government handling the pandemic, this is a low 43 per cent in the US, 56 per cent in Britain, and 53 per cent in Hong Kong while 71 per cent in Australia. Also, despite many Chinese test kits being useless, 68 per cent Indians agree that the government is taking the right steps in handling medical equipment. In comparison, this is a (-) 17 per cent in Britain, a low 3 per cent in the US, 22 per cent in Hong Kong and a high 60 per cent in Australia. The report anticipates better hiring prospects and job opportunities in the North and South regions, as compared to western and eastern parts of India. A lost year in creating job opportunities poses a grim picture for a country where millions of youngsters join the workforce every year. In fact, the urban unemployment rate went up to 27% in mid-May — higher than the rural unemployment rate. New job creation in India next three months is likely to be the worst ever⁠— and that could lead to a lost year

New Delhi, Mar 16 () Online/e-learning is the most preferred way of training among learners as it provides flexibility to learn anywhere and anytime at a cost-effective manner, says a survey. According to Velocity MR, a leading market research and analysis company, 72 per cent Indians prefer online/e-learning mode of training than traditional classroom training. The findings of the survey comes at a time when many state governments have advised all schools to remain shut until the situation gets under control amid Covid-19 scare. The global economy has plunging into a deep crisis due to coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic that has killed over 6,000 and sickened lakhs of people around the globe. Byju's is the most-known e-learning app followed by other apps like Udemy, Coursera, Unacademy, Lynda, NIIT, IGNOU, Oliveboard, it noted. The study also saw that online/e-learning is not only beneficial to the learners but also to the teachers. This mode of teaching saves time, provides flexibility to teach from anywhere while also allowing teachers to assist the learners directly, the survey said. "Our survey shows that the age range of 25 to 45 years prefers online learning. Among 94 per cent of people who opt for online learning are the working professionals working in industries like IT/computers/Technology," said Jasal Shah, managing director and CEO of Velocity MR. Shah further noted that one fourth of the learners still prefer traditional classroom training as they feel that student and teacher face-to-face interaction helps understand the subject more easily. Mumbai, Mar 26 () When the world is fighting the coronavirus pandemic, 64 per cent businesses in India said they are ready to ride through the current crisis, according to a survey. Overall 64 per cent of Indian businesses are ready or getting ready to ride through the ongoing crisis due to COVID-19, while 3 per cent of small and medium businesses (SMBs) said they are well prepared and 39 per cent of large businesses said they are gearing up, according to the survey by job site Indeed. The survey was done among 150 employers of SMBs, large organisations and gig economy businesses across 10 cities in India. It showed that businesses are adapting by leveraging collaboration technology to ensure uninterrupted work and developing new policies as the situation evolves to make remote working effective and efficient. The gig economy is best prepared, with 83 per cent of businesses emphasising their contingency plan includes frequent communication protocols and technological infrastructure to ensure seamless remote working, the survey report added. It also found that 50 per cent of Indian businesses have already reduced embedded resources, such as contract workers or freelancers. Mumbai, Apr 17 () The aviation industry may take between six months to two years to recover from the severe blow dealt by the coronavirus pandemic, according to a survey carried out by global consultancy ICF. The survey, conducted among senior and mid-level executives from across the world between late March and early April, also revealed that there may be increased scrutiny placed on the health and sanitary conditions of individual countries that could impact air service and passenger demand. "The COVID-19 crisis has resulted in a total or partial shutdown of their business. As to how long business activity will remain depressed, nearly half of respondents expect the slowdown to last three to four months. "One-third of respondents, however, think it can last five months to one year. In contrast, nearly half of respondents expect recovery will take up to two years," as per the survey. "Not only are we facing the most profound activity slowdown in aviation history, but respondents are also expecting a slow road to recovery. Just over one-third of respondents anticipate activity will return to pre-crisis levels within a year," it stated. Given how deep the present crisis is and the growing probability that it will trigger a global recession, ICG said it expects the recovery period to be significantly longer than the respondents' expectations. "It is important to remember, however, that traffic has always come back," it added. At the same time, the survey observed regional differences in the respondents' views on the period of recovery, with those in Asia being most optimistic about the future rebound in business activity. As much as 60 per cent of the respondents in Asia said they expect a full recovery to pre-COVID-19 levels in less than 12 months. This is related to the relative success many Far East countries appear to have had in containing the pandemic, with countries like South Korea and China slowly returning to work, it said. On the other hand, respondents in Europe and North America are the least optimistic, with two-thirds of respondents expecting the recovery to take up to two years or more, as per the survey findings. According to the survey, as many as 50 per cent of the respondents indicated that a customer will prefer a direct flight than with a stop-over post-COVID 19, while another 46 per cent were of the opinion that it may give rise to demand for private jets. "Nine out of 10 respondents expect the widespread adoption of video conferencing solutions for work and education, which would undoubtedly impact the demand for air travel. The implications for business travel, much of which is driven by intra-company meetings, could lead to reduced demand," the survey stated. "The COVID-19 pandemic has introduced new practices (such as sociel distancing and telecommuting), raised hygiene awareness, and increased the popularity of video conferencing. One or two weeks in quarantine may permanently change peoples behavior --but how about one or two months? "We have never witnessed a social experiment of such magnitude and on such a wide scale, but it would be naive to think the new normal will be identical to the one we knew before COVID-19 upended our lives," it said. Mumbai, Jun 4 () Consumer confidence has collapsed amid the coronavirus pandemic and it may result in contraction of the economy by 1.5 per cent during 2020-21, surveys released by the Reserve Bank showed on Thursday. "Consumer confidence collapsed in May 2020, with the Current Situation Index (CSI) touching historic low and the one year ahead Future Expectations Index (FEI) also recording a sharp fall, entering the zone of pessimism," as per the Consumer Confidence Survey (CCS) released by the RBI. According to another survey, GDP during the current financial year is likely to contract by 1.5 per cent, though the next fiscal is expected to be much better. "Real gross domestic product (GDP) is likely to contract by 1.5 per cent in 2020-21 but is expected to revert to growth terrain next year, when it is likely to grow by 7.2 per cent," said the Survey of Professional Forecasters (SPF) sponsored by the RBI. Real private final consumption expenditure (PFCE) is expected to decline by 0.5 per cent during 2020-21 but likely to record 6.9 per cent growth next fiscal, the survey said. It added that real gross fixed capital formation (GFCF) is likely to register negative growth of 6.4 per cent in 2020-21 but is expected to grow by 5.6 per cent in 2021-22. Real gross value added (GVA) is expected to decline by 1.7 per cent this fiscal but record 6.8 per cent growth in 2021-22, supported by uptick in industrial and services sector activities, said the SPF survey based on response of 24 panellists. According to the CCS, consumer perception on the general economic situation, employment scenario and household income plunged deeper into contraction zone, while expectations on general economic situation and employment scenario for the year ahead were also pessimistic. "Overall consumer spending remained afloat, mostly due to relative inelasticity in essential spending ; consumers, however, reported sharp cuts in discretionary spending and also do not expect much improvement in the coming year," it added. In view of the COVID-19 pandemic, the survey was conducted through telephonic interviews during May 5-17, 2020 in 13 major cities, including Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai and Patna. Perceptions and expectations on general economic situation, employment scenario, overall price situation and own income and spending were obtained from 5,300 households. A third study on 'Households' Inflation Expectations Survey' said households' median inflation perception and expectations increased sharply in May 2020 as compared with the March 2020 round of the survey. Participants were expecting increasing price pressure on food products. More households expect general prices and inflation to rise over a three-month horizon as compared to the previous round.
