An Indian Touch Menu apart, the Indian store showcases an adapted version of the Emanating Star, a part of the parent chain’s signature logo. But it has an Indian touch with local tribal motifs – Warli patterns — on the back wall of the shop. Cooked onsite The company is known for its 100% organic coffee. It was founded to introduce Burmese cuisine, offering Myanmar’s authentic taste and cuisine and providing a window into its culture. “I’ve grown up eating the Burmese dishes we serve at Burma Burma, as my mother learnt these recipes while growing up in Burma before the migration in the 1960s,” said Ankit Gupta, cofounder, Burma Burma. The restaurant was started in 2014 by the duo in Mumbai. The duo has opened seven outlets across Mumbai, Delhi, Noida, Gurgaon, Bangalore, and Kolkata in the last nine years. With this funding, the company plans on opening eight new outlets in the next fifteen months, taking the total to fourteen outlets. “Nine years in this business, we’ve thoroughly tested all four zones of the Indian market for Burmese cuisine across six cities in India. With this round, we’re committed to entering new cities and expanding our base in existing ones,” said Chirag Chhajer, cofounder, Burma Burma. “With our 450+ member strong team, our next target is to take Burma Burma beyond India; we’re now ready more than ever,” Chhajer added. In addition to a restaurant, the duo also sells <keyword id="15658550" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="burma-burma-pantry" source="Orion">Burma Burma Pantry</keyword> products across the country. The retail products were launched in May 2022 and are sold through the company’s e-commerce website. “Burma Burma is a perfect fit for a fund like Negen Capital. Burma Burma, a Burmese restaurant chain, raises over $2 million in seed funding

<ul><li>As Maharashtra remains the worst affected state in India hit by the COVID-19 pandemic, with positive case numbers worse than the year before, the state now has a partial lockdown once again.</li><li>As shutters come down on restaurants, the owners are looking at a fate that they had never imagined.</li><li>Restaurant owners urge the government to find alternatives and support the restaurant industry or it could be the end for many.</li></ul>As Maharashtra remains the worst affected state in India hit by the COVID-19 pandemic, with positive case numbers worse than the year before, the state has now entered a partial lockdown, once again. Night curfew and weekend lockdowns have been implemented. Restaurants, bars, and eateries have once again shut doors on government orders to stop the spread of the virus. But as shutters come down on restaurants, the owners are looking at a fate that they had never imagined. “Things were finally looking up and the hospitality industry had only just started to recover when the night curfew and weekend lockdown got imposed again. While we understand that the government has imposed the curfew keeping in mind public safety and rising numbers, this will probably be the final nail in the coffin for the F&amp;B industry,” Riyaaz Amlani, chief executive officer and managing director Impresario Handmade Restaurants told Business Insider. Amlani is the man behind the popular ‘SOCIAL’ chain of restaurants. While many other businesses gathered steam online, for restaurants the main driver of their business is the dine-in aspect. As things opened up in June 2020, restaurants went on a marketing drive to promote the precautionary measures taken up to keep dine-in safe and secure. “About 75% of our business happens during dinner hours, and now with an 8 p.m. curfew even home deliveries have been hit hard,” said Amlani. Many outlets have shut shop, while many others are now struggling to stay afloat. Popular chain The Thickshake Factory has put a stop on all expansion plans. “While the exponentially rising Covid cases are definitely a cause of concern, a selective sector-wide lockdown of restaurants and bars will hit the already under stress sector very hard. The restaurant industry is already reeling under heavy losses. While local trains are running with full capacity, shutting down restaurants is an unwelcome step in my opinion,” Yeshwanth Nag Mocherla, founder of The Thickshake Factory told Business Insider. Can there be alternatives? Restaurateurs also understand the importance of strict measures to control the COVID-19 pandemic. What they are urging for is an alternative to help their businesses survive. "The hospitality industry is with the government. We will once again support the government like we did last year. But, there will be no hospitality industry if the government does not reciprocate. We are doomed this time around if we are expected to be both, shut for business, and not receive any relief. The government has to meet us somewhere in between," said Pradeep Shetty, senior vice president, Hotel and Restaurant Association of Western India (HRAWI). Shetty has a laundry list for the government to pull out the restaurant industry out of the crisis. “Shut us but do justice to the owners, staff, and their families. Take care of the salaries. Unburden the owners of the property tax, waive off the statutory fees, don't generate electricity and water bills until the industry becomes completely operational again. We understand that the government has to take measures but it's coming at a cost that we just can't bear any more,” he said. Mocherla, too, agrees that even heavy fines for flouting social distancing guidelines could be a better option. But there have been lessons learnt during the pandemic which could come of use. Multiple restaurants have launched their own apps for online deliveries, while chains like Barbeque Nation, who had built a strong reputation for their dine-in business, embraced home delivery. Amlani’s appeal to customers is only one – support restaurants. “We would also sincerely urge customers to order directly from restaurants rather than aggregator apps to help us tide through what is once again going to be a hard time for us,” he said. Maharashtra restaurant owners fear the current lockdown could be the final nail in the coffin for their business

few months back as people got more comfortable in stepping out of their house and getting back to the normal routine. While restaurants were still operating both online and offline from June 2020 onwards, multiplexes had lost that option as well. <ul><li><keyword id="1185141" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hardcastle-Restaurants">Hardcastle Restaurants</keyword>, the company that owns and operates McDonald's franchises in western and southern India, announced that they will recycle used cooking oil to produce <keyword id="824755" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Biodiesel">biodiesel</keyword> that will fuel its supply delivery trucks.</li><li> 85 restaurants in <keyword id="6358070" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="mumbai">Mumbai</keyword> are already converting 35,000 litres of regular oil into biodiesel every month. </li><li>The company plans to bring all their 277 outlets under the recycling programme.</li></ul> Hardcastle Restaurants, the company that owns and operates McDonald's franchises in western and southern India, has <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/services/hotels-/-restaurants/mcdonalds-to-power-its-trucks-by-recycling-used-cooking-oil/articleshow/65102541.cms">initiated</a> a novel project to help reduce the company’s <keyword id="6404408" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Carbon-footprint">carbon footprint</keyword> in India. The company announced on Monday that they will recycle the cooking oil used in making its food items to produce biodiesel that will fuel its supply delivery trucks. Last year, Hardcastle Restaurants along with Unicon Biofuels, piloted the project in Mumbai. In fact, 85 restaurants in Mumbai are already converting 35,000 litres of regular oil into biodiesel every month. Next, it plans to replicate this in Bengaluru and eventually, according to Vikram Ogale, director, supply chain and quality assurance, Hardcastle Restaurants (HRPL), the company plans to bring all their 277 outlets under the recycling programme. Ogale claims that the fuel generated by converting cooking oil is believed to have 75% lower carbon emissions than diesel over its entire lifecycle. Sandeep Chaturvedi, president of the Biodiesel Association of India, said that this conversion of used cooking oil to biodiesel has been done in adherence with the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). He also urged other companies to follow suit and help reduce the burden on the environment. This initiative is, however, not unique to India. In fact, McDonald's UAE launched the first such project way back in 2011. And in June 2018, seven years after the launch, <keyword id="25643" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="McDonalds">McDonald’s</keyword> UAE announced that its logistics fleet of biodiesel delivery trucks had clocked a staggering <a href="https://www.zawya.com/mena/en/story/Recycled_frying_oil_fuels_10millionkm_journey_to_improve_local_air_quality__McDonalds_UAE-ZAWYA20180627092936/">10,000,000 kilometres</a> since the launch of the project. Thereby significantly reducing the company’s carbon footprint. In fact, using this fuel is believed to have saved 8,563 tonnes of carbon dioxide.

 Among the metropolitan areas, Bengaluru requires 36 documents mandatory for approval while Mumbai gives a go ahead with 22, as per the National Restaurants Association of India (NRAI). The national capital, on the other hand, requires 26 documents — including liquor licence, food safety and music. That is, in fact, more than the number of documents needed to buy arms and guns with 19 documents. Construction permit And, the construction permit and warehouse costs just add to it. The businesses in Delhi have to undergo several procedures — which takes almost four months to finally get a construction permit and another 35 days to get access to water and sewer connection. This is double the amount of time needed to build one in Hong Kong — which leads in the World Bank rankings to obtain construction permits. However, India has improved in the process of obtaining permits in the last five years. In 2014, the process took over six months to facilitate restaurant owners to actually start building on the land. These are some of the gaps highlighted by Subramanian in the latest <keyword id="7828702" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Economic-Survey-2020">Economic Survey 2020</keyword> that are affecting the ease of doing business in India. The survey also calls for the government to introduce more reforms to facilitate businesses.
