Ten central trade unions on Monday said around 25 crore people will participate in a nationwide strike on January 8 to protest against the government's "anti-people" policies.
 Trade unions INTUC, AITUC, HMS, CITU, AIUTUC, TUCC, SEWA, AICCTU, LPF, UTUC along with various sectoral independent federations and associations had adopted a declaration in September last to go on a nationwide strike on January 8, 2020.
 "We expect participation of not less than 25 crore of working people in the forthcoming National General Strike on January 8, 2020, to be followed by many more actions seeking reversal of the anti-worker, anti-people, anti-national policies of the Government.
 "The Ministry of Labour has failed to assure on any of the demands of workers which called a meeting on January 2, 2020. The attitude of the government is that of contempt towards labour as we construe from its policies and actions," the 10 central trade unions (CTUs) said in a joint statement.
 About 60 organisations of students and elected office bearers of some universities have also decided to join the strike with an agenda to raise voice against increased fee structure and commercialization of education, it said.
 The trade unions condemned the <keyword id="8526257" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="JNU-violence">JNU violence</keyword> and similar incidents in other university campuses and expressed their solidarity with students and teachers all over India. The unions also expressed displeasure over no Indian Labour Conference being held since July 2015, codification of labour laws and privatisation of PSUs.
 "As many as 12 airports are already sold out to private hands, 100 per cent sale of Air India is already decided, decision to sell BPCL taken, BSNL-MTNL merger announced and 93,600 telecom workers already thrown out of jobs under the garb of VRS (voluntary retirement scheme)," it added.
 The unions are also against privatisation in railways, corporatisation of 49 defence production units and forced merger of banks.

The activists intensified their protests after the Bombay High Court dismissed petitions against Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRCL) to save the green zone. A special Supreme Court bench comprising justices Arun Mishra and Ashok Bhushan said it will have to examine the entire issue and posted the matter for hearing on October 21, before its forest bench.  The revised hostel fee for JNU students, after the partial rollback is at ₹3,600 per year and ₹1,800 for students belonging to below-poverty line sections. On the other hand, the annual hostel charges across IIT Delhi and Mumbai campuses range between ₹15,000 and ₹20,000. An association of owners and drivers of taxis and autos protested at Azad Maidan in South Mumbai, demanding inquiry and action against cab aggregator companies like Uber and Ola. 
 As per the newly-formed "<keyword id="3434885" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Jai-Bhagwan-Taxi-Rickshaw-Sanghatana">Jai Bhagwan Taxi Rickshaw Sanghatana</keyword>," the transport charge of Rs 6 per km which is being offered by these aggregators is not fair since the rate is fixed at Rs 8 per km. 
 
The association also alleged that the government has joined hands with these service providers, conspiring to wipe off taxis and rickshaws from Mumbai roads. 
 Association president <keyword id="3434894" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bala-Sanap">Bala Sanap</keyword> threatened that he would take taxis off roads from July 26 in case the government fails to order an inquiry against these aggregators. 
 
However, the Mumbai Taximen's Union, which is one of Mumbai’s largest unions, did not participate in the protest.

The recent <keyword id="406897" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="farmer-protests">farmer protests</keyword> in <keyword id="13126" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Maharashtra">Maharashtra</keyword>, in which around 40,000 farmers and tribals staged a peaceful 180 km march from Nashik to <keyword id="6358070" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mumbai">Mumbai</keyword>, has been lauded for its execution by politicians and media outlets alike, with The Hindu even calling it a <a href="http://www.thehindu.com/opinion/editorial/a-model-protest/article23229917.ece">“model protest”</a> and the chief minister of Maharashtra, Devendra Fadnavis, saying that he was “deeply humbled” before agreeing to their demands. What really made the farmers protests stand out and ultimately successful, was its amazing public relations machine. The farmers earned the sympathy of not only the citizens of Mumbai but the rest of India, as they marched at night to avoid disruptions to urban commuters and students sitting for their board exams. There were no overt theatrics or violence, unlike the farmer protests around Maharashtra between June last year which resulted in the announcement of the 34,000 crore <keyword id="56684" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="loan-waiver">loan waiver</keyword> scheme. The organisation sponsoring the march, All-India Kisan Sabha, an ally of the Communist Party of India, left no stone unturned when it came to social media. In a <a href="https://thewire.in/rights/i-walked-40km-with-the-farmers-in-maharashtra-heres-what-i-learnt">piece for the Wire,</a> Ayush Dubey, a young journalist, wrote of his experience as a participant in the march, stating “this is a real protest by a sad farmer community. They are working hard for their demands”. All news outlets explicitly mentioned that the farmers were looking for more than just debt forgiveness. It was clear that they were also calling for the implementation of property rights and minimum support prices for their produce as well as the cancellation of river-sharing agreements. Attention was also drawn to the severity of their conditions, epitomised by their bleeding, blistered feet- a sign of dignified, non-violent desperation. The public didn’t need any more convincing. Images of the march at night went viral on social media on March 11th.  The success of the march, especially in terms of public relations, points to why the protests by Tamil Nadu farmers in Delhi last year didn’t amount to much. Starting in March last year, around 150 farmers from Tamil Nadu staged a protest for 144 days outside the Jantar Mantar to ask for a loan waiver, which would be financed by the Centre’s drought relief fund. Their protests also received media coverage and sympathy from statesmen like Rahul Gandhi and the chief minister of Tamil Nadu but failed to elicit the same level of public support as the long march in Maharashtra. There are likely many reasons for this. First, the numbers might have been too low to justify a full-blown media frenzy. 150 farmers feels too small compared to a procession of 40,000 farmers. Secondly, given the fast pace of the 24-hours news cycle, the 144-day protest likely lost relevance to news readers and viewers well before its conclusion. The protest also lacked a groundswell of support from beginning as the farmers from Tamil Nadu weren’t on their home turf. Being stationed in the capital, which was necessary given that it was a federal rather than a state issue, might have actually worked against their favour. Lastly, unlike their counterparts in Maharashtra, their protest tactics, which included the brandishing of skulls, the consumption of faeces and stripping, might have proved too “unpalatable” to the public. With their well-oiled public relations machine and sponsorship by a national farmers union, the Maharashtra farmers were able to wrest public support and effectively demonstrate the importance of their cause.

Our protest is now over. Our request has been accepted. We will accept the letter from him. Referring to the demands of giving Kunbi certificates to all 54 lakh people whose data has been found till now, Patil said that they will be given the certificates soon. "54 lakh entries were found for our fight. They will be given the certificate soon," he said. Earlier on Friday, Patil warned the state government that if their demands were not met, then protestors would march towards Mumbai on Saturday morning. He also urged the Maharashtra government to withdraw all the cases registered by the police regarding the demand for Maratha reservations in the state. Meanwhile, Maharashtra Minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha said that the ordinance that was passed has the solution to all the problems, so there is no need to continue the protests. "A movement that was going on in Maharashtra for the Maratha reservation under the leadership of Manoj Jarange Patil has reached a solution. The ordinance that was passed has the solution to all the problems. Manoj Jarange Patil has announced that since the solution has been received, there is no need to continue the protests. CM Eknath Shinde will end Manoj Jarange Patil's fast with juice. The movement has reached a solution," Lodha said on Friday. He added, "if Singh comes to Islamabad on August 3, the JuD would hold countrywide protest to tell the world that the Pakistani rulers might have compulsions to receive Kashmiris' killers but the people of Pakistan are siding with oppressed Kashmiris".

 On June 3, the relatives of a patient admitted at Nil Ratan Sircar Medical College and Hospital, clashed with the doctors after the patient died. During the clashes, an MBBS intern was badly injured. The incident provoked an outrage on social media and across the West Bengal on June 11 where doctors protested against the assault.  Several hospitals and doctors association including the (All India Institute of Medical Sciences) AIIMS in New Delhi, Raipur, Patna and Punjab have shut down services, owing to the protest. Government hospitals in Kerala and Hyderabad also staged a protest through ‘cease work’ demonstration. Over 4,500 Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) also joined the mass protest by not attending the patients in nearly 26 government hospitals. Similar protests were also being held in Pune, Aurangabad and Nagpur by MARD members who are demanding protection for their counterparts in West Bengal. Senior and junior resident doctors of several government hospitals in the nation’s capital on June 14 also went on the one-day token strike.

A leopard strolled into the <keyword id="519155" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Korum-Mall">Korum Mall</keyword> in Thane near Mumbai — India's financial capital— on Wednesday, according to media<a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/thane/leopard-spotted-at-thane-mall-rescue-underway/articleshow/68074036.cms"> reports</a>. The leopard was caught on CCTV footage of the mall roaming around the lift lobby of the mall.

Alarmed by the spread of agitation, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has convened an all-party meeting in Mumbai on Wednesday to discuss and resolve the issue. Maratha legislators from all political parties staged a protest near the Gandhi statue outside Mantralaya in Nariman Point and are likely to meet Governor Ramesh Bais later demanding a special legislature session to finalise the community quotas. Gandhi said that the Centre had very successfully engineered violence in New Delhi to scuttle the anti-CAA-NRC protests that had become a big embarrassment for the government. "Now the same modus operandi has been employed in Maharashtra to defame and derail the Maratha reservation agitation," said <keyword id="97377" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="tushar-gandhi" source="Orion">Tushar Gandhi</keyword> sharply. Another incident of arson on a government office was reported from Jalna where a village panchayat office was torched by some unknown persons raising pro-quota slogans. Scores of Maratha activists lay down on the railway tracks in Solapur and blocked the passage of at least one long-distance train even as police attempted to clear the railway lines. A local office of the Bharatiya Janata Party was set ablaze at Naiknagar in Hingoli district, while a large number of Maratha activists got down in a stream in Pune for a 'jal-samadhi' protest. Scores of Marathas launched relay hunger strikes at Chunabhatti in Mumbai and Mungse village in Nashik district demanding immediate announcement of quotas. Schools and colleges remained shut on Tuesday in Shevgaon, Ahmednagar district and students participated in the protests. In Pune, protestors blocked the Pune-Bengaluru Highway by throwing burning truck tyres on the Navale Bridge and squatting on the road, raising anti-government slogans, as 10-km long traffic snarls developed on both sides of the important thoroughfare. A large number of activists took out a symbolic 'funeral' procession of the state government in Tembhurni, Solapur district, while half a dozen services of the Nagpur-Pune sleeper bus services were suspended for the day. In Beed, which was rocked by large-scale arson and violence on Monday, a Nationalist Congress Party (SP) activist <keyword id="13209654" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="yogesh-kshirsagar" source="Orion">Yogesh Kshirsagar</keyword> alleged that the torching of his MLA brother Sandeep R. Kshirsagar was "a pre-planned conspiracy". "Before setting our house on fire, someone had snapped off the power supply here, the miscreants who indulged in stone-pelting were carrying bottles filled with petrol, and the police proved totally incapable of stopping them," claimed Yogesh Kshirsagar. The Shivba Sanghatana President Manoj Jarange-Patil, whose indefinite hunger strike entered the seventhday on Tuesday, again appealed to his supporters in the state to refrain from any violence and carry out a peaceful agitation.
