In the United Arab Emirates, L&amp;T's PT&amp;D has been awarded contracts to build a 220kV substation and three 132kV substations. These substations will be pivotal in meeting the growing electricity demand in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, supporting the utilities in maintaining a robust and reliable power network. L&T wins multiple orders worth Rs 2500 to 5000 crore to build grids for clean energy transition

<ul><li>The massive power cut in India’s financial capital Mumbai on October 12 may have been the work of hackers. </li><li>The Maharashtra Police’s cyber cell probe has reportedly found evidence of suspicious logins and is working to determine if this was a coordinated attempt to take down Mumbai’s power grid.</li><li>According to an earlier statement by the state’s Energy Minister Nitin Raut, the possibility of sabotage cannot be ruled out.</li></ul>The power was out in Mumbai for nearly a day on October 12, putting the stock exchanges, medical facilities, and other critical infrastructure at risk. Now, the state police’s cyber cell probe has reportedly revealed that this may have been the work of state-sponsored hackers. Sources told the <a href="https://mumbaimirror.indiatimes.com/mumbai/cover-story/oct-12-blackout-was-a-sabotage/articleshow/79312959.cms">Mumbai Mirror</a> that multiple ‘suspicious’ logins on the supply and transmission utility servers were detected during the month-long probe. Most of these accounts were from other Asian countries, including Singapore. The investigation is currently ongoing to determine whether it was a coordinated attempt to bring down India’s financial capital. State-sponsored hackers targeting India According to a report by <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/news/top-cyber-espionage-groups-that-have-india-in-their-crosshairs/slidelist/79120867.cms">CYFIRMA</a>, at least four different state-sponsored hacking groups have India in their crosshairs. This includes Mission 2025, Apt36, Stone Panda, and the infamous Lazarus Group. However, until more information comes to light, there’s no way to tell whether it was one of these four groups or a new player altogether that attacked India’s power grids. According to Mumbai Mirror, the attempts to break through have been ongoing since February — shortly after the COVID-19 outbreak started to spread. At the time of the Mumbai power outage, Maharashtra’s Energy Minister Nitin Raut told the media that the possibility of sabotage could not be ruled out. “There was a technical problem and the Kharghar unit stopped. There was an islanding failure in Mumbai, which shouldn't have happened. This is the reason that the possibility of sabotage is suspected,” he said. Not only was the department rendered inoperable for three days, its website and mobile app were also taken down. Neel Kamal Singh from the IT wing of the J&amp;K Power Department <a href="https://twitter.com/jkmediasocial/status/1276213262229450752">told the press</a> that it was a ransomware attack, where all official files and data have been encrypted by the hackers. Before the attack was finally shut down, the hackers were able to compromise at least four servers. India is not alone Methods of warfare are no longer restricted to horses or firepower. Most attacks now happen in the digital space, and India is not alone in its struggles. Canada, for instance, has named China and Russia as primary threats to its cybersecurity. The country’s Communications Security Establishment (CSE) fears that these foreign actors are likely to target Canada’s power supply. The US has also identified China as a threat to its national security, with the possibility of an attack on some of its critical infrastructure. Mumbai’s massive power cut last month may have been the work of hackers

Maharashtra Energy Minister <keyword id="87586" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nitin-Raut">Nitin Raut</keyword> on Wednesday said "foul play or sabotage" has not been ruled out in the mega-power shortage that tripped Mumbai Metropolitan Region on Monday and added that stringent action will be taken against all found guilty. Addressing the media, he said that the interim report of a probe committee set up by the state government will submit its report in a week and its recommendations would be implemented. Besides, a central team which came here on Tuesday is also probing into the incident that left large parts of MMR without power for periods ranging from 2-9 hours, playing havoc with the people, railways, traffic, business and commercial activities. "There are certain protocols that must be adhered to whenever any maintenance work is taken up. We shall investigate whether these protocols were followed or not by the officials of MahaVitaran. However, we don't rule out the possibility of sabotage or foul play and stringent action will be taken against those found guilty," Raut asserted. Late on Tuesday, in a cryptic statement, Raut had said: "Possibility of a sabotage cannot be ruled out in respect of the Power trip that resulted in blackout on Monday dated 12.10.20 at Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and Thane." According to officials on Monday, some maintenance work was taken up on the 400KV line in Kalwa and entire load was shifted to the line 2, which in turn tripped owing to some technical glitches and the cascading effect hit almost the entire MMR comprising Mumbai, Thane, parts of Palghar and Raigad districts. While private distributors like Adani, Tata and BEST had restored supply in their respective regions on Monday, some areas served by MahaVitaran remained without power for another around 24 hours, and resumed on Tuesday. Targeting the Minister, Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party legislator Atul Bhatkalkar asked Raut when he came to know it was "a sabotage" whether he informed Home Minister Anil Deshmukh in the matter. However, Raut responded by saying some people were trying to malign his department but the probe reports would reveal everything. The two Asian giants may be disengaging on the ground but relations do not seem to have thawed in the realm of cybersecurity. Sensex surges over by 400 points, reclaims 50,000 mark

Mumbai, The Indian stock market opened on a positive note on Tuesday with the key indices hitting new highs. The BSE <keyword id="6484188" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="sensex">Sensex</keyword> touched an all-time high of 51,606.25 and the Nifty50 on the <keyword id="53581" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="NATIONAL-STOCK-EXCHANGE">National Stock Exchange</keyword> a record high of 15,197.80 points as healthy buying was witnessed in oil and gas and energy stocks. The indices, however, later trimmed gains and were trading marginally. Around 9.55 am, Sensex was trading at 51,415.41, higher by 66.64 points or 0.13 per cent from its previous close of 51,348.77. It opened at 51,484.23 and had recorded an intra-day low of 51,377.70 points. Nifty50 was trading at 15,143.15, higher by 27.35 points or 0.18 per cent from its previous close. Manish Hathiramani, technical analyst with Deen Dayal Investments, said: "The markets have continued their northward trajectory this morning and we are very close to the 15,200 target. While a pause at these levels cannot be ruled out, the overall trend for the Nifty remains positive and we should target 15500 as the next level of resistance." "A buy on dips is a prudent strategy to adopt in the current market scenario," he added. The string of <keyword id="6369463" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="hacks">hacks</keyword> are the "most destructive, most costly, and most egregious cyberattacks ever known," US attorney Scott Brady said in a press conference on Monday.The hackers — Yuriy Sergeyevich Andrienko, Sergey Vladimirovich Detistov, Pavel Valeryevich Frolov, Artem Valeryevich Ochichenko, Petr Nikolayevich Pliskin, and Anatoliy Sergeyevich Kovalev — are accused of comprising <a href="https://www.wired.com/story/sandworm-kremlin-most-dangerous-hackers/">Sandworm</a>, a Russian hacking group that has wreaked havoc for years but avoided prosecution until now.They're all members of the GRU, a Russian intelligence agency that the FBI <a href="https://www.fbi.gov/wanted/cyber/Russian-interference-in-2016-u-s-elections">said</a> was behind Russian efforts to interfere in the 2016 presidential election. However, federal prosecutors did not charge the men with planning any attacks on the upcoming US election, and Brady said Monday that law enforcement doesn't have any reason to believe that Russian hackers have compromised US voting systems.But according to the indictment, the six Russian hackers did carry out repeated attempts to sabotage Russia's perceived enemies in recent years, including a <a href="https://www.cnet.com/news/macron-french-presidential-campaign-says-it-was-hacked/">2017 attack on French voting infrastructure</a> and <a href="https://redirect.viglink.com/?format=go&amp;jsonp=vglnk_160313120438112&amp;key=ce074976249105acf14d8c9cf69bdcd1&amp;libId=kgguvhd301003n6p000DLaz2y8okt&amp;loc=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.cnet.com%2Fnews%2Fus-charges-Russian-hackers-over-3-of-worlds-biggest-cyberattacks%2F&amp;v=1&amp;out=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.wired.com%2Fstory%2Fus-blames-russia-gru-sweeping-cyberattacks-georgia%2F&amp;ref=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com%2F&amp;title=US%20charges%20Russian%20hackers%20over%203%20of%20world%27s%20biggest%20cyberattacks%20-%20CNET&amp;txt=%20the%20Georgian%20government%20in%202019%20Georgian%20government%20in%202019">a string of cyberattacks against the Georgian government</a> in 2019.In one of the most severe cases, the hackers are accused of <a href="https://www.wired.com/story/russia-ukraine-cyberattack-power-grid-blackout-destruction/">disrupting Ukraine's power grid</a> in December 2015, assistant attorney general John Demers said during the press conference Monday."These attacks turned out the lights and turned off the heat in the middle of the Eastern European winter, as the lives of hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian men, women and children went dark and cold," Demers said.The six hackers are also accused of orchestrating a cyberattack against the <a href="https://www.vox.com/2017/6/27/15881666/global-eu-cyber-attack-us-hackers-nsa-hospitals">Heritage Valley Health Systems</a>, a hospital chain in Western Pennsylvania. The attack used ransomware built into the group's NotPetya worm, which shut down the computer systems of two hospitals and demanded a ransom payment, shutting down surgeries for about a week."These are crimes committed by Russian government officials against real victims who suffered real harms," Brady said.The six men are believed to still be residents of Russia, according to the indictment.
