New Delhi, Jul 15 () In the wake of the heavy downpour in Mumbai and coastal Maharashtra, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday upgraded the warning status from orange to red, a special bulletin on the city's rain said on Wednesday. The city has been witnessing heavy rains since Tuesday night, resulting in water logging in many areas. Red alert has been issued for Mumbai, R K Jenamani, scientist with the National Weather Forecasting Centre, said. The bulletin said scattered "heavy to very heavy rainfall" with isolated "extremely heavy falls" are very likely to occur over Mumbai city, Thane, Raigad and Ratnagiri districts during the next 18 hours. The bulletin added that due to the heavy rains, inundation of low-lying areas is expected. The rains could also lead to disruption in electricity and water supply, local traffic and road transport. Until 8.30 a.m., Dadar had recorded 15.9 centimetres of rainfall; Parel 13.2 cms; Colaba 12.9 cms; Worli 11.7 cms; Santacruz 10.6 cms; Santacruz 6.3 cms; Borivali 10.1 cms, as per the bulletin. Rain has wrecked one of India's busiest highways between two top tech hubs

 Heavy rains across the country have put major cities like Mumbai, <keyword id="6354321" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Bengaluru">Bengaluru</keyword>, Hyderabad and Delhi-NCR on a standstill. And flood prone areas like Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, <keyword id="6354915" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Assam">Assam</keyword> all continue to suffer from floods. Twenty six people have lost their lives and nearly 36 lakh have been affected across more than 3,300 villages in 28 districts in the state. 
 
ASSAM 
The floods in Assam have affected 19 lakh residents of the state and displaced about 5,00,000 people, who have taken shelter at relief camps. The death toll in the state has reached 25. Floods have also caused massive damage to infrastructure, including roads and bridges. Rising waters have also sparked concerns over the wellbeing of endangered one-horned rhinoceroses in the Kaziranga National Park. Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh visited Assam on Saturday, and made an aerial survey of flood-hit areas, post which the minister announced a compensation, "The state government has announced a compensation of Rs 4 lakh for victims of the flood," he said. 
 
BIHAR 
Bihar too faced a dire situation in some regions. Continuing heavy rain in the upper reaches has led to flooding in Supaul, Purnia and Kishanganj. So far, there have been 26 flood-related deaths in the state. Rising water levels in the Mahananda River are leading to a spread in the flooding in Katihar, Purnia and Kishanganj. 
 
UTTAR PRADESH 
Uttar Pradesh government has set up 41 relief camps to provide aid and shelter to people who have been affected by flooding. Rain in the upper reaches of rivers that run through the Terai region means water continues to be released from barrages. The floods have meant farmers face the possibility of a total loss of the kharif crop on thousands of acres of land. 
 
GURGAON 
Though vehicular movement remained slow in Gurgaon , it was an improvement from the 15-km-long jams of Friday. Repair works were carried out to roads in some parts after water cleared in the morning, but rain returned by late morning. 
 
TAMIL NADU 
Alerts have been issued in parts of northwestern Tamil Nadu after dams and barrages in the region received heavy inflows. The inflows continue to rise due to heavy rain in southern Karnataka, that has brought Bengaluru to a halt. KARNATAKA A number of low-lying areas continue to be flooded, with Kodichikkanahalli and Bilekahalli among the worst-hit. A number of lakes in the city have breached their banks, compounding the problem in surrounding areas. 
 
MUMBAI 
Mumbai continued to receive incessant downpour and more rain has been predicted for the city through the weekend. However, traffic seemed to be running smoothly overall even as local trains run late.

Incessant rains cripples whole of India

As temperatures climb beyond life-threatening levels, and then some, Delhi’s citizens have been desperate for a spot of rainfall to ease the blistering situation. However, there’s no such thing as a free lunch — a painful pill that Delhiites recently had to swallow after severe destruction accompanied the answering of their rainy pleas. The country’s capital witnessed more than 220 mm of downpours in the past 24 hours, beating a 88-year-old record. This became a horrific ordeal that turned the city’s streets into rivers and severely damaged <keyword id="20248923" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="airport-infrastructure" source="keywords">airport infrastructure</keyword>. According to reports, a portion of the roofing of <keyword id="20903969" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="terminal-1" source="keywords">Terminal 1</keyword> of Delhi’s <keyword id="19948932" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indira-Gandhi-International-Airport" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Indira Gandhi International Airport" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Indira Gandhi International Airport">Indira Gandhi International Airport</keyword> (IGI) collapsed on top of cars and people around 5:30 AM today. Despite prompt response from the fire department, the tragic incident has led to the unfortunate death of one person so far, with at least 8 injured. All flights from <keyword id="20881868" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="terminal" source="keywords">Terminal</keyword> 1 have been suspended or cancelled until further notice, bringing great inconvenience to commuters hoping to catch a flight out of the region. <h2 style="margin-bottom: 0.7em; line-height: 1.3; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-size: 24px; background: 0px 0px; text-rendering: optimizelegibility;">Best airport in India?</h2>As usual, politicians have begun to play the blame game over the state of infrastructure in the country. As per Skytrax, which assigns these rankings based on the experience of travellers at over 500 international airports, Delhi ranked at number 36 on the 2024 list. Only four Indian airports have made it to the top 100 of the Skytrax list, with only two other Indian airports receiving awards. This includes the Hyderabad Airport (rank 61), which was voted in for the best airport staff in India and South Asia. <h2><keyword id="22214727" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bridge-collapses" source="keywords">Bridge collapses</keyword> and other roof leaks</h2>Bengaluru Airport, another awardee at rank 59 on the list, had recently faced a similar set of problems after heavy rainfall as well. After intense showers lashed Bengaluru in May earlier this year, rainwater leaked through the roof of Terminal 2 of the Kempegowda International Airport. The newly-built Terminal had commenced operations just four months prior. In fact, 2024 has seen quite a few shares of <keyword id="22214728" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="major-infrastructural-accidents" source="keywords">major infrastructural accidents</keyword> already. For instance, Bihar witnessed four bridge collapses within ten days this month, one of which was close to opening. In addition, many long cracks were discovered on the newly inaugurated Mumbai <keyword id="19997860" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="trans-harbour-link" source="keywords">Trans Harbour Link</keyword> — the longest sea bridge in the country — just five months after inauguration.

Delhi airport's roof collapses months after ranking as India's best airport; 1 dead, several injured

The incident happened at 11.30 pm on Tuesday when seven coaches of Kamayani Express, bound for Varanasi, and five bogies of Janata Express, bound for Mumbai, were crossing the bridge in Harda, some 160 km from Bhopal. 
 
The toll is expected to go further up. The <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=indian+railways">Railways</a> has announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh to the families of the deceased, Rs 50,000 to grievously injured and Rs 25,000 to those with minor injuries. 
 
Meanwhile, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=shivraj+singh+chouhan">Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan</a> will visit the site later in the day. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Nitish+Kumar">Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar</a> also condoled the deaths. 
 
"Seven bogies of Kamayani Express and engine plus three coaches of Janata Express were derailed between Khirkiya and Bhirangi stations near Harda. The mishap took place around 11.30 PM on Tuesday as base material of the tracks got washed away in heavy rains. Nearly 25 passengers suffered injuries," West Central Railway PRO Piyush Mathur told news agency PTI. 
 
Search operations have been launched and few coaches also fell in the river. Bhopal Railway PRO told PTI that more than 250 passengers were rescued so far. 
 
Meanwhile, Minister of State of Railways Ministry Manoj Sinha said it was not a manmade disaster but a natural calamity.

Flash floods derail two trains in MP, over 24 dead, 25 injured

	Food prices are a political hot potato in India, where more than a quarter of its population of 1.2 billion people live on a mere 74 cents or less per day. In fact, high food prices have already pushed the country's June consumer inflation to an eight-month high. 
 

	That is why the ongoing dryness in central, western and southern India - key producing regions for cotton, soybean, corn, sugarcane, pulses and rice - is a big cause for worry. Poor output of summer crops would further lift food prices, restricting the central bank from cutting lending rates, crucial to boosting Asia's third-biggest economy. 
 

	"The outlook for inflation over the next few months depends squarely on monsoon rains for the remainder of the season," HSBC said this week. Farm sector accounts for 15 per cent of its economy and given half its farmland lacks irrigation, the monsoons are crucial. 
 

	A heavy downpour early last month had lifted the rain surplus to 28 per cent, raising farmers' hopes of a good June-September monsoon season despite forecasts for the emergence of an El Nino weather pattern. But following the dry spell, rains are now 6 percent below normal, with the deficit as high as 52 per cent in some regions, weather department data shows. 
 "Sowing has nearly stopped due to the dry spell. Even sown crops are under severe stress," said Vikas Deshmukh, <keyword id="6355165" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Agriculture">agriculture</keyword> commissioner of Maharashtra state, India's second-biggest cotton and soybean producer as well as its top sugar producer, to Reuters. 

	Farmers had initially rushed to sow seeds after ample rains, bringing total planting levels to 44.5 million hectares by July 10, up 62 per cent year on year. 
 

	But the higher number does not give a correct picture as monsoon in 2014 was delayed and so was the sowing, said B.V. Mehta, executive director of the Solvent Extractors' Association. In 2013, when rains were ample, by this time farmers had planted on nearly 52 million hectares. 
 

	For millions of farmers , where three fifths of the population depend on agriculture for their livelihood, the fate of a single crop can be the difference between life and death. 
 

	Earlier this year, dozens of debt-laden farmers committed suicide after damage from unseasonal rains, and poor summer-crop yields would exacerbate the pain for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government that is struggling to address rural distress. 
 

	"I can sow crops once again when we get rains, but I don't have money to buy seeds," said Narayan Patil, a farmer from Sarve village of Jalgaon district, 400 km north-east to Mumbai, to Reuters. 
 

	For Patil, and several others, the outlook is grim. 
 

	The official forecast remains that this year India could suffer its first drought since 2009 because of El Nino, which can lead to scorching weather across Asia. 
 

	Maximum temperatures in central and southern India are currently up to 6 degree Celsius above normal, hurting crop growth, said Nitin Kalantri, a pulses dealer.
 

	A drop in domestic output could lift overseas purchases of edible oils and pulses by India, the world's biggest importer of both, while limiting its rice and cotton exports. 
 

	"Crop yields are likely to be lower than normal this year even if monsoon becomes active in next few days," said Vandana Bharti, Assistant Vice-President (Commodity) with SMC Global Securities Ltd, to Reuters.
