The expansion may be contributing to obesity and upending traditional diets in these countries, from Brazil to Ghana, according to <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2017/09/16/health/brazil-obesity-nestle.html?_r=1">a new report</a> by The New York Times.The Times examined corporate records, epidemiological studies and government reports, and conducted interviews with nutritionists and health experts around the world to find out how the expansion of huge packaged food companies into developing nations could affect public health."What we have is a war between two food systems, a traditional diet of real food once produced by the farmers around you and the producers of ultra-processed food designed to be over-consumed and which in some cases are addictive," Carlos Monteiro, a professor of nutrition and public health at the University of São Paulo, told The Times.Nestlé, the world's largest packaged food company, has hired thousands of door-to-door vendors to sell its products to a quarter-million households in the far-flung regions of Brazil. The most popular items are nearly all sugar-sweetened items like Kit-Kats and Chandelle Pacoca - a 3.5-ounce cup of peanut-flavored pudding with 20 grams of sugar, one vendor, Celene da Silva, told the Times. (For perspective, the World Health Organization recommends <a href="http://www.who.int/mediacentre/news/releases/2015/sugar-guideline/en/">25 grams</a> of sugar daily for the average adult.)Since 2003, <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/us-brazil-poverty-idUSBRE91I14F20130219">36 million</a> people in Brazil have risen out of poverty. The economy boomed and consumer spending followed, but as The Washington Post <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/the_americas/once-underfed-brazils-poor-have-a-new-problem-obesity/2016/11/23/74c661fa-ab8e-11e6-8f19-21a1c65d2043_story.html?utm_term=.78294736e473">notes</a>, there has also been an explosion of overweight people in the country. Today, 57% of Brazil's population is overweight, and 1 in 5 people are obese.In the past decade, food has <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3378592/">become cheaper and more widely available</a> throughout the world. But the most accessible foods are often often be high in calories, salt, and sugar, and low in nutrients. In <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3378592/">a 2012 analysis</a>, researchers found that the world's ten largest food companies control about 15% of food sales, a percentage that is rising annually. <a href="https://www.ers.usda.gov/amber-waves/2005/february/processed-food-trade-pressured-by-evolving-global-supply-chains/">Three-fourths</a> of world food sales are processed foods, and the largest manufacturers hold over a third of the global market."To understand who is responsible for these nutritional failures, it is first necessary to ask: Who rules global food systems? By and large it's "Big Food," by which we refer to multinational food and beverage companies with huge and concentrated market power," the authors wrote.Sean Westcott, head of food research and development at Nestlé, said rising obesity was an unintended side effect of making the company's processed foods more commonplace."We didn't expect what the impact would be," he <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2017/09/16/health/brazil-obesity-nestle.html?_r=1">said</a>.Though the solution is unclear, several <a href="http://www.who.int/nutrition/databases/infantfeeding/2015_conflictsofinterest_nut_programmes_biography.pdf">global health nonprofits</a> are working toward raising awareness about obesity and other health problems linked to high-sugar, high-fat foods, like type 2 diabetes. In these divided times, everything is political, from the news we consume to the fast food we binge. But consciously or unconsciously, no consumer choice says "us vs. them" more than what car we choose to drive. First offered for sale in 1987, the Wrangler recalled the glory days of the Greatest Generation, while offering an off-road aesthetic that appealed to red and blue alike. He dropped out of university after his second year studying commerce, according to <a href="https://www.siliconindia.com/news/success-stories/gautam-adani-from-a-college-dropout-to-billionaire-industrialist-nid-210122-cid-80.html" rel=" nofollow">Silicon India</a>. That's despite 1,000 companies announcing they were voluntarily cutting back on operations just two months after the Ukraine war started. And it's not for lack of trying: More than 2,000 companies are seeking approval to exit the Russian market, the <a href="https://www.ft.com/content/77368014-1397-4a08-901d-1f996e66d627" target="_blank" rel="noopener nofollow">Financial Times</a> reported on Tuesday, citing a person involved in an exit negotiation. But the Russian authority handling the applications meets only three times a month and considers up to seven applications each time, thus prolonging the exit process, per the FT.Others who have varying degrees of active operations in Russia cannot simply pack up and go for a variety of business and non-business-related reasons.Quite simply, it's just not that straightforward for a company to get out of Russia right now — and there are three main reasons why.<h2>1. Companies have been trying to exit Russia in an orderly fashion</h2>Many companies were quick to announce their intent to leave the Russian market after it invaded Ukraine.While some big brands such as <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mcdonalds-quits-russia-30-years-ukraine-war-putin-2022-5" target="_blank" rel="noopener">McDonald's</a>, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/starbucks-is-leaving-russia-after-mcdonalds-2022-5" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Starbucks</a> have fully exited the country, others may be taking a slow and orderly approach to their exit strategy or various reasons.As Hassan Malik, a senior sovereign analyst at the Boston-based investment management consultancy Loomis Sayles, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/explainer-russia-economy-inflation-slowed-unemployment-steady-sanctions-ukraine-war-2022-6">told Insider in June last year,</a> "Translating boardroom decisions into on-the-ground action takes time."Some companies also cited obligations to their local employees while deciding to leave or stay."Our colleagues in Russia have, through no fault of their own, endured months of stress and uncertainty," Arvind Krishna, the CEO of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-ibm-lay-off-hundreds-russia-staff-corporate-exodus-economy-2022-6">IBM — one of the earliest companies to exit the market</a> — <a href="https://newsroom.ibm.com/Update-on-IBMs-Business-Operations-in-Russia" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said in a statement in June.</a> "We do not think it is right to abandon our people in Russia," UK consumer giant Unilever said on <a href="https://www.unilever.com/news/press-and-media/press-releases/2023/unilever-statement-on-the-war-in-ukraine/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">February 13.</a> The conglomerate, which currently employs 3,000 people in Russia, stopped all imports and exports of its products and capital flows into and out of the country last year but continues to supply made-in-Russia products domestically.There are also concerns about what would happen to businesses if they simply shut their operations in Russia. "It is clear that were we to abandon our business and brands in the country, they would be appropriated – and then operated – by the Russian state," Unilever said. Selling the business isn't a good option, either. "To date we have not been able to find a solution which avoids the Russian state potentially gaining further benefit," the company added.<h2>2. The Kremlin has devised programs to keep the economy going</h2>The Russian government made it challenging for companies to leave right after countries started imposing sanctions on the Kremlin over its war in Ukraine. US based automaker <keyword id="161559" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="jeep" source="Orion">Jeep</keyword>, owned by <keyword id="9583188" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="stellantis" source="Orion">Stellantis</keyword>, has revealed the first images of its upcoming electric <keyword id="45454" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="SUV" source="Orion">SUV</keyword> and confirmed that it will launch in 2023. According to The Verge, Jeep has been slower to embrace electrification as compared to many of its rivals. The automaker has released plug-in hybrid versions of its Wrangler and <keyword id="5774662" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Grand-Cherokee-SUVs" source="Orion">Grand Cherokee SUVs</keyword> and plans an off-roading version of the Grand Cherokee, the <keyword id="6349318" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Trailhawk" source="Orion">Trailhawk</keyword>, which also comes with a hybrid motor. But the unnamed SUV coming out next year will be Jeep's first purely battery-electric vehicle, the report said. The automaker recently announced that it would release "zero-emission" versions of all of its vehicles by 2025, along with plug-hybrid variants. The new Jeep EV would fall within the comprehensive plan last year by Stellantis, the multi-national conglomeration that formed last year when Fiat Chrysler merged with the French PSA Group, to electrify the lineups at most of its brands. That includes EV versions of the Ram 1500 pickup truck and an electric Dodge muscle car. On Tuesday, Stellantis also teased the upcoming Ram 1500 truck with images showing off the vehicle's lighting setup. The image appears to be just a design sketch, leaving open the possibility that Ram has yet to settle on a final form of its upcoming electric truck. Ram is also making an electric ProMaster delivery van that will be incorporated into Amazon's fleet starting in 2023, the report said. Both the Jeep EV and Ram 1500 EV will likely use Stellantis' STLA platform, which is one of the four platforms used by the automaker for its upcoming lineup of EVs, it added.
