With the United Nations designating 2023 as the International Year of Millets at India's request, the superfood - millets - is going to be the talk of the world soon.<br /><br />And proactive star hotels and food companies in India have chalked out their plans to whip up new millet-based dishes for their customers.<br /><br />The industry officials are expecting sustained deliberations about the goodness of millets to start soon and extend throughout 2023.<br /><br />This will certainly have a positive rub-off effect on the demand for millet-based dishes, hotel and food company officials told IANS.<br /><br />"Now nobody can ignore millets. The focus for food product companies will be on how to milletise their products," S. Murugan Narayanaswamy, CEO, of Southern Health Foods P Ltd makes Manna brand food items.<br /><br />The Manna brand which gained prominence with cricketer Ashwin Ravichandran as brand ambassador has millet-based idli/dosa/upma/poha/kichadi/Pongal and rava dosa mixes.<br /><br />Generally, millets are small-grained, annual, warm-weather cereals belonging to the grass family. They are highly tolerant of drought and other extreme weather conditions and have a similar nutrient content to other major cereals. Mayank Kulshreshtha, Area Executive Chef of Southern Region, ITC Hotels &amp; Executive Chef of ITC Grand Chola told IANS.<br /><br />The millets commonly grown in India include Jowar (sorghum), Bajra (<keyword id="2136819" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="pearl-millet" source="Orion">pearl millet</keyword>), ragi (finger <keyword id="9463" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="millet" source="Orion">millet</keyword>), Jhangora (barnyard millet), Barri (Proso or common millet), Kangni (foxtail/ Italian millet), Kodra (Kodo millet) and others, he said.<br /><br />The year 2023 will be a turnaround year with more consumers and companies opting for millets. The Atta product categories will see new offerings like oats atta, multigrain atta, nutrition bars and ready-to-cook packs.<br /><br />"Sales of millet-based products are expected to go up by 2.5 times. This is due to the creation of awareness about millets by the central and state governments, food companies promoting their products and the emergence of new categories based on millets," Narayanaswamy added.<br /><br />According to him, millet-based health drinks, breakfast cereals and noodles will grow. The breakfast cereals will turn into multigrain products with millets.<br /><br />While Southern Health is mulling an entry into the millet-noodles segment, the existing player the Mumbai-based Satvika Bio-Foods Private Ltd is expecting higher sales volumes within and outside India.<br /><br />"We have started exporting to Australia and the US. The big food products companies can no longer avoid the millet segment. And their entry will grow the market," Vinod Kumar, Founder and CEO of Satvika Bio-Foods told IANS.<br /><br />Terming noodles as a pan-India food now, Kumar said the overall noodles market size is about Rs 15,000 crore. Within that, the Atta noodles segment will be about Rs 500 crore.<br /><br />Though the Atta noodles segment is growing fast it will take a long time to grow to the size of the maida noodles market. Given this, the millet noodles segment is small but will log accelerated growth starting in 2023, Kumar said.<br /><br />Like millet noodles, there is millet pasta from Wholsum Foods under the brand Slurrp Farm.<br /><br />On the star hotels side, the 650-room meta ITC Grand Chola and beach resort Sheraton Grand Chennai Resort and Spa seems to have the first mover advantage having readied their special millet offerings to their guests.<br /><br />"Next year, we will have a focussed millet programme at our restaurants. We have incorporated millets in European dishes," Kulshreshtha of ITC Hotels said.<br /><br />According to him, the ITC Hotels as a group has enhanced millet offerings across the country.<br /><br />On October 14, ITC Hotels launched its millets programme on the Pavilion buffets.<br /><br />Some of the indicative breakfast, lunch and dinner buffets are: Pearl millet and Brown Rice Poha, Foxtail Millet and <keyword id="15256772" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="multigrain-loaf" source="Orion">Multigrain Loaf</keyword>, Amaranth, Ajwain and <keyword id="13011333" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="rajma-tikki" source="Orion">Rajma Tikki</keyword>, Bajra Gosht Khichdi, Foxtail millet and Caponata Cannelloni with Roma Tomato Sauce, Amaranth and Jeera Poori, Pearl Millet and Wheat Sourdough, Sama and Brown Rice Kheer, Green Peas, Corn and Finger Millet Tartlet, Sama Murgh Pulao, Finger Millet Crepes with Wild Mushroom Onion and Feta, <keyword id="5951950" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="ragi-poori" source="Orion">Ragi Poori</keyword>, Baked Cheese Cake with Buckwheat Crumble, Finger Multi Farmer's Loaf, said Kulshreshtha.<br /><br />"Unlike other hotels, resorts have an advantage in making their guests try out new dishes. The guests come here for leisure with their family," R.Devakumar, Executive Chef, Sheraton Grand Chennai Resort and Spa told IANS.<br /><br />"At our buffet restaurants, we will encourage our guests to try out new millet-based dishes highlighting the health benefits. For example, the Kambu Koozh or Pearl Millet Porridge is good for the gut. But registered dietitian Kate Hilton, who combats misinformation about nutrition on her TikTok account <a target="_blank" href="https://www.tiktok.com/@dietsdebunked?lang=en"><u>Diets Debunked</u></a>, told Insider that whipping up a healthy meal without planning can be easy if you keep your kitchen stocked with certain foods.</p><p>She recommended keeping a source of protein, starchy carbohydrates, and vegetables in your fridge, freezer, and cupboards — whether they're <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/guides/health/diet-nutrition/best-canned-food-for-emergencies"><u>canned</u></a>, frozen, fresh, or dried — so "there's always a way for you to obtain the main food groups, even if you haven't been to the shops in 10 days."</p><p>Here are some of the items Hilton keeps in her kitchen so she can make <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/guides/health/diet-nutrition/how-to-eat-healthy-on-a-budget">healthy meals</a> in a pinch.</p><h2>Long-lasting carbohydrates</h2><p>Hilton keeps a loaf of seeded or multigrain bread in her freezer, which are among the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/guides/health/diet-nutrition/healthiest-bread"><u>healthier types of bread</u></a> because they contain lots of fiber and nutrients.</p><p>She also keeps pasta in her cupboards, which she pairs with a sauce made from canned chopped tomatoes, as well as basmati rice.</p><h2>Meat and non-meat proteins</h2><p>Hilton recommended freezing fresh meat, such as chicken breast and pork mince, or Quorn if you're vegetarian, so that you don't have to rely on less healthy, frozen processed options such as chicken nuggets. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/processed-meat-increases-cancer-risk-what-to-know-2018-12">Processed meat</a> can contain added salt, sugar, and fats, which are linked to a host of health problems including certain cancers.</p><p>Hilton also always keeps longer-lasting plant-based proteins in her cupboards, such as cans of beans and lentils, which are quick to cook and also full of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/guides/health/diet-nutrition/high-protein-low-carb-foods"><u>fiber</u></a>. Other plant-based options include tofu and tempeh.</p><p>In the fridge, she suggested having products such as soy yogurt, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/best-milk-to-drink-2018-9#in-terms-of-nutrients-soy-milk-is-the-closest-equivalent-to-cows-milk-5">soy milk</a> or eggs for proteins that can be made into quick breakfasts and lunches.</p><h2>Fresh, tinned, and frozen vegetables</h2><p>The majority of the produce Hilton keeps is fresh, because she prefers to eat seasonal fruits and vegetables. But as well as her fridge, she keeps her cupboards and freezer stocked with fruit and vegetables so she has plenty of variety and can get lots of different nutrients.</p><p>She always has canned tomatoes, tinned sweetcorn, and tinned fruit, such as peaches and pineapple in her cupboards, as well as frozen peas, bananas, and berries in her freezer.</p><p>"Whatever fruits and vegetables you can manage is going to be a good thing," she said.</p><h2>Healthy fats</h2><p>Hilton's healthy fat staples are extra virgin olive oil and rapeseed oil, but she also recommended keeping whatever nuts and seeds you like in your cupboards for another source of healthy fats.</p><p>"For me, it's walnuts and chia seeds for the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/guides/health/diet-nutrition/omega-3-foods"><u>Omega-3</u></a> they contain. And also things like pecans and nut butters, just because I like them," she said.</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Eating plant-based food can lower your risk of cardiovascular disease and help you lose weight.</li><li>Plant-based dietitian Alyssa Fontaine shared her four go-to vegan breakfasts with Insider.</li></ul><p>If you're thinking of going vegan, or already follow a plant-based diet but want to jazz up your daily breakfast of plain oatmeal and fruit, vegan dietitian<a href="https://alyssafontaine.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> Alyssa Fontaine</a> has you covered. </p><p>Fontaine, who runs a plant-based nutrition company from Canada, previously shared<a href="https://www.insider.com/vegan-dietitian-common-mistakes-diet-health-plant-based-2023-7"> the four most common mistakes people make when going vegan</a> with Insider. </p><p>While some people adopt the <a href="https://www.insider.com/vegan-diet-review-2017-11">diet</a> for ethical or environmental reasons, it can also provide some serious <a href="https://www.insider.com/guides/health/diet-nutrition/vegan-vs-vegetarian">health benefits</a>, including a decreased risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease, as well as aiding <a href="https://www.insider.com/vegan-diet-leads-to-weight-fat-loss-improves-gut-bacteria-2019-9">weight loss</a>. </p><p>To reap these benefits, you need to get to grips with plant-based proteins, learn about the nutrients your body needs, and meal prep a bit, Fontaine told Insider. </p><p>A vegan diet focuses on plant-based forms of protein such as beans, chickpeas, and tofu, as well as starchy carbohydrates, fruits, and vegetables, and eliminates all animal products including meat, fish, milk, and cheese. </p><p>Fontaine believes that to sustain a healthy plant-based diet, you <a href="https://www.insider.com/why-nutrition-reporters-love-8020-rule-for-healthy-diet-2021-4">shouldn't be too restrictive with yourself</a>, your meals need to be quick to make and, most importantly, taste good. </p><p>Fontaine shared her four go-to breakfasts, which all contain a protein source or a calcium source, or both.</p><h2>Chocolate peanut butter bars</h2> <p>Her favorite breakfast is a four-ingredient recipe she calls<a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@alyssafontainerd/video/6888135771501497601?lang=en" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> chocolate peanut butter bars</a>, which last her the whole week. </p><p>Use bananas, oats, peanut butter, and chocolate chips to make a batter mixture, pour it into a loaf tin, and bake for 30 minutes at 350 degrees Fahrenheit. When it is baked, cut the loaf into slices. </p><p>"It's easy because you have these things in the fridge, you can just grab them and call it a day," she said.</p><h2>Avocado toast with added protein </h2> <p>Fontaine is always thinking about how she can add a source of <a href="https://www.insider.com/guides/health/diet-nutrition/what-is-protein">protein</a> — which has many jobs in the body including building muscle — into her dishes, such as hemp seeds, beans, nuts, or any soy products.</p><p>For this reason, her take on avocado toast, a vegan staple, always includes a few nutritious extras. </p><p>For example, she likes to add hemp seeds on top or mash them into the avocado. They are also a good source of <a href="https://www.insider.com/guides/health/diet-nutrition/omega-3-foods">omega-3</a>.</p><p>Another way she upgrades this dish is by adding edamame beans and tahini. </p><p>You can easily do this by defrosting some frozen edamame beans, covering them with water and putting them in the microwave for three minutes, Fontaine said. Then mash them with the avocado in a bowl using a fork, and add some lemon juice, salt, and pepper. </p><p>The tahini is rich in protein and calcium, she said, and you should use multigrain bread for the toast.</p><h2>Natural protein powders</h2><div type="image" title="protein powder" height="3493" width="4658" msid="102695862" hostid="261" sizebytes="283884"></div><p>If you are pressed for time or resources, Fontaine suggests buying a <a href="https://www.insider.com/guides/health/fitness/best-natural-protein-powder">natural protein powder</a>, such as pumpkin seed or hemp seed protein powder.</p><p>You can easily add these to a <a href="https://www.insider.com/anti-aging-protein-smoothie-recipe-biological-age-chris-mirabile-2023-8">smoothie</a>, with a non-dairy milk, oats or seeds, and fruit.</p><h2>Oatmeal with peanut butter and soy milk </h2><div type="image" title="oatmeal with banana and blueberries" height="4003" width="5338" msid="102695866" hostid="261" sizebytes="333400"></div><p>Another quick and easy go-to breakfast for Fontaine is oatmeal with peanut butter and <a href="https://www.insider.com/milk-nutritional-differences-dairy-oat-almond-soy-calories-protein-chart-2022-4">soy milk.</a></p><p>Soy milk is her favorite type of non-dairy milk because it has the most protein, she said.</p><p>If you are struggling with the taste of soy milk, Fontaine said that it can take the body three weeks to get used to a new flavor, so you should give yourself time before totally ruling it out.</p>

There's nothing rebellious or individualistic about Subway.</p><p>In its heyday, Subway was considered a pioneer with its walk-along sandwich-making process. But its leadership has been shaky since the death of cofounder <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/subway-founder-ceo-fred-deluca-inside-story-2021-6?r=subway-lp">Fred DeLuca</a>. Over the years, the chain has downsized stores, laid off corporate staff, and been plagued by the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/subway-jared-fogle-documentary-couldnt-come-at-a-worse-time-2023-2">Jared Fogle</a> scandal.</p><p>It's also drastically changed its franchising system's fundamentals, a business model that has turned many immigrant entrepreneurs into <a target="_blank" class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.nrn.com/marketing/exclusive-subway-launch-80m-store-refresh">millionaires driving Ferraris and Rolls-Royce</a> luxury cars.</p><p>To improve its sales and its relevance, the chain has revamped stores and upgraded its menu by adding more high-quality ingredients.</p><p>These changes have improved <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/subway-comeback-sales-surge-potential-10-billion-sale-nears-2023-4">sales over the past two years</a>, but Roark is still buying a fixer-upper.</p><p>I've been covering the restaurant industry for two decades, but I haven't walked into a Subway in a long time. So I visited four Subway stores near my Southern California home.</p><p>I learned a lot during my visits. Here's what Roark should do to fix the brand.</p><h2><strong>Continue to remodel all stores</strong></h2><div type="image" title="Subway remodeled store in Orange, California August 2023" height="1512" width="2016" msid="103292140" hostid="261"></div><p>The first Subway I hit was the closest one to my home. It's in an old strip mall, anchored by a Grocery Outlet and a Rite-Aid. I haven't been inside this Subway in years. It looked fabulous. It is one of hundreds of Subway stores that have been <a target="_blank" class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.nrn.com/quick-service/cheat-sheet-subways-3-refresh-programs">remodeled</a> over the years. The contemporary look was more inviting than other stores I visited.</p><p>If Subway wants to compete with modern fast-food rivals like McDonald's, Roark must insist all stores be upgraded.</p><p>But franchisees should not bear the burden of costly upgrades on their own. They have seen their profits grow thinner due to high inflation and labor costs. Owners have the power to help franchisees. In 2020, the owner of <a target="_blank" class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.nrn.com/quick-service/jersey-mike-s-financing-150-million-remodel-program-amid-pandemic">Jersey Mike's funded a $150 million</a> remodel program for franchisees. Last year, <a target="_blank" class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/burger-kings-400-million-plan-favors-800-restaurants-spurns-others-2022-9">Burger King said</a> it would invest $200 million to help its best franchisees remodel restaurants.</p><p>As of July, Subway said 10,000 stores have been remodeled in North America, "with more to come."</p><h2>Stores are cannibalizing each other. Keep cutting store counts.</h2><div type="image" title="Subway Google map of stores in Orange" height="848" width="1029" msid="103292142" hostid="261"></div><p>Subway grew too fast under <a target="_blank" class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/subway-founder-ceo-fred-deluca-inside-story-2021-6?r=subway-lp">Fred DeLuca,</a> and franchisees continue to pay the price for the greedy growth trajectory. The Miami-based chain closed more than 6,500 restaurants between 2015 and 2022, and its US store count stood at 20,576 at the end of last year, according to the market-research firm Technomic.</p><p>They need to trim more fat.</p><p>Take where I live in Southern California.</p><p>There are 20 Subway restaurants less than three miles from where I live in Orange, California. Of those, 50% have another store 0.1 miles or less from another Subway. There's not enough interest in Subway to sustain these restaurants.</p><p>I visited four of these stores at lunch and dinner. Each time, there were three or fewer people ordering food. In most cases, I was the only person ordering food.</p><p>Still, the analytics firm <a target="_blank" href="http://Placer.ai">Placer.ai</a> says foot traffic at Subway has inched up this year. In July, visits were up 0.4% year over year, but traffic was still down 18.5% compared to July 2019. In May, traffic was down 21.6% compared to four years ago.</p><h2><strong>Fix the bread and the tuna</strong></h2><div type="image" title="Subway's six inch tuna sandwich" height="1283" width="1507" msid="103292143" hostid="261"></div><p>In 2021, Subway rolled out artisanal loaves of bread, upgraded soups, and added new meats and dressings. It was <a target="_blank" class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://newsroom.subway.com/2021-07-06-Subway-Debuts-Largest-Menu-Update-in-Brands-History">billed</a> as the most extensive menu update in the brand's history.</p><p>One thing they didn't upgrade was the tuna, which has been the subject of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/subway-tuna-is-a-mixture-of-various-concoctions-lawsuit-claims-2021-1">controversy</a> for years. In lawsuits and media publications, Subway has been accused of mislabeling its tuna because the product sold in stores does not contain actual tuna fish.<strong> </strong>In 2021, The New York Times conducted its lab test and published a report stating that it found no tuna DNA in Subway tuna sandwiches.</p><p>Subway has called these accusations meritless. In fact, they are so confident in their tuna that it was the one item they didn't upgrade during the big 2021 menu overhaul.</p><p>"While many of Subway's core protein choices were improved as part of the Eat Fresh Refresh, one ingredient that doesn't need an upgrade is the Subway high-quality, premium tuna," the company <a target="_blank" href="https://newsroom.subway.com/2021-07-06-Subway-Debuts-Largest-Menu-Update-in-Brands-History">stated</a> in 2021. "Subway sources tuna from leading global food suppliers that have a reputation for working diligently with food safety and quality experts to ensure consistent, high-quality products at every stage of the supply chain. The 100% wild-caught tuna remains a fan favorite among sub lovers."</p><p>I ordered the tuna sandwich at a Subway in Santa Ana, California, an aging stand-alone store in a former adobe-style Taco Bell building. The 6-inch sandwich, served on white artisanal Italian bread, came with two scoops of tuna that looked more like tuna spread. The sandwich artist put only two tiny scoops in the middle of the bread loaf. The ingredients I added — onions, lettuce, and pickles —overpowered the tuna.</p><p>It tasted like tuna, but I would not call this a premium product.</p><p>Now, let's talk about the bread. There's nothing artisanal about these newly formulated loaves. During my four visits, I tried the artisanal Italian, the hearty multigrain, and the Italian herb-and cheese bread. Subway said it tapped "a panel of world-class bakers over two years to develop" these new recipes.</p><p>It needs to tap a few more bakers, because the bread is terrible. Each store served bread that was stale and flavorless. Even the herb-and-cheese bread had no flavor to it. A stale French baguette tastes better than these loaves.</p><h2>Keep your stores clean and stocked</h2><div type="image" title="Subway Cafe story with dirty tables" height="1512" width="2016" msid="103292144" hostid="261"></div><p>Three of the four stores I visited had dirty floors and tables. Usually, I give a restaurant a pass on this if there are lines out the door and there's no staff available for busing and cleaning tables. But most of the stores I went to were empty.</p><p>The unkempt restaurants looked especially terrible in the remodeled stores.</p><p>A Subway Cafe near Chapman University in Orange was filthy. The healthiest bread — 4 choices that are more nutritious than whole wheat

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="1567895" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Aldi">Aldi</keyword> is a German supermarket chain that's become popular in the United States for its great deals and products. </li><li>I tried several of the chain's popular snack foods, and many of them were delicious.</li><li>I wouldn't buy either of the ice creams I tried, but I enjoyed the string cheese and vanilla-cream brioche bread.</li><li>The toasted-coconut Cookie Thins were my favorite snack and they tasted homemade. </li></ul><p>The <a href="https://www.insider.com/facts-about-aldi-2018-6">German-based supermarket chain</a> Aldi has made a name for itself in the United States for its inexpensive and tasty foods. And, like many grocery stores, Aldi has plenty of iconic <keyword id="15004" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Snacks">snacks</keyword>. </p><p>As a writer for Insider, I was sent 17 popular snacks to <keyword id="45374" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Review">review</keyword> from Aldi. Although the snacks were free for review purposes, they typically cost under $6 each. That's all you can really ask for. </p><p><strong>Verdict: </strong>I wouldn't seek these out or buy them, but I also wouldn't be disappointed if we crossed paths again</p><h2><strong>These gluten-free rosemary and olive oil multi-seed snack crackers didn't have much flavor</strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="g free crackers" height="2947" width="3929" msid="77951943" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>If you woke me up in the middle of the night and stuffed one of these crackers in my mouth without showing me the bag, I wouldn't have guessed they were flavored with rosemary and olive oil.</p><p>They had a small hint of those flavors, but they weren't as pronounced as the brown sugar or onion and garlic powder on the chip. </p><p>These are pretty solid, and I think those who love flaxseed would like these. Personally, I think the flaxseed somehow negates the taste of other, better ingredients, even though it's pretty much flavorless. That's the only reason these lose points. </p><p><strong>Verdict: </strong>These hover on the edge of the would-buy category. I wasn't the biggest fan of these, but I could see myself buying them again if the mood struck me. They're also a decent option for those who avoid gluten since they're part of Aldi's gluten-free line, LiveGFree. </p><h2><strong>These black-sesame brown-rice crisps are also from Aldi's gluten-free line</strong></h2><div type="image" title="sesame crackers" height="2860" width="3814" msid="77951945" hostid="261"></div><p>These look like everything I don't want in a cracker — filled with seeds and made from brown rice — but I remained open-minded. </p><p>My main issue was that these didn't have enough salt and ended up tasting like bland corn chips. </p><p><strong><div type="image" title="g free crackers" height="2937" width="3916" msid="77951947" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>These aren't bad if you pair them with dips, but that's only because the flavorlessness of the crisp kind of helps the dip stand out more. </p><p><strong>Verdict: </strong>I wouldn't buy these, but if you're really looking to change up your dip game and start eating more seeds, I'd suggest giving these a try.</p><h2><strong>The medium, fresh-cut salsa had a pleasant kick </strong></h2><div type="image" title="aldi salsa" height="2361" width="3148" msid="77951951" hostid="261"></div><p><a href="https://www.insider.com/chefs-reveal-the-best-store-bought-salsas-2019-12">Store-bought salsa</a> is rarely spicy enough for me, but this one was actually spicier than I expected. When store-bought salsa calls itself medium, it usually means "slightly less mild than mild," but not here.  </p><p>This salsa actually tasted like it had jalapeno seeds in it, which was terrific. I also found this salsa to be a bit watery, which wasn't surprising because water is listed as an ingredient. </p><p>Overall, this was a great product. It had a genuinely pleasing kick and a true medium spice level, which is hard to come by.  </p><p><strong>Verdict: </strong>I would buy this.</p><h2><strong>The chunky, restaurant-style guacamole was tasty</strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="aldi guacamole" height="2556" width="3408" msid="77951954" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>It turns out "restaurant-style" does not mean <a href="https://www.insider.com/how-to-make-guacamole-according-to-chefs-2019-3">authentic guac like you'd get at a great restaurant</a>, but it's good</p><p>Putting tomato in the guacamole, which is less common for store-bought dips than you'd think, showed a lot of thought, even though it didn't add a robust flavor. The lime and jalapeno in the dip were flavorful, but I could've used a bit more onion and cilantro.</p><p>This was a fine guacamole and seemed like the kind you would get at a decent Mexican-American restaurant. If you split it with a group of friends, it would be gone in under 10 minutes. </p><p><strong>Verdict: </strong>I would totally buy this. It didn't blow me away, but this is a very solid thing to put out at a party. </p><h2><strong>Another item from the Simply Nature collection, the organic, red-pepper hummus was simple, but not bad </strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="aldi hummus" height="2390" width="3187" msid="77951956" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>I usually dip red bell pepper in hummus, so I was curious to see what it's like to have that flavor already in the mix. Would I end up just using a spoon? </p><p>Rosemary and olive oil was the first scooping chip I tried, and it overpowered the hummus. Surprisingly, the bland brown-rice one turned out to be the best control chip. </p><p><strong><div type="image" title="aldi hummus" height="2332" width="3110" msid="77951958" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>Great hummus is hard to come by, but this was pretty good even though it tasted sort of generic. There was a little red pepper in this, but it didn't blow me away.</p><p><strong>Verdict: </strong>I don't know if I'd buy this, but I'd eat this if it was at somebody else's house.  </p><h2><strong>The spinach-parmesan tzatziki with Greek yogurt was incredible</strong></h2><div type="image" title="tzatziki aldi" height="2659" width="3545" msid="77951961" hostid="261"></div>This looked less like tzatziki and more like spinach dip, which is a word that I can actually spell without googling it. <p>This had "midnight snack" written all over it. It tasted like cold spanakopita (a spinach-filled Greek pastry) filling, which is to say: delicious.</p><div type="image" title="tzatziki aldi" height="2803" width="3737" msid="77951962" hostid="261"></div><p>If this showed up at my Superbowl party, I'd be stoked. I can see myself blowing through 3/4ths of this at around midnight, and then deciding I might as well finish it 20 minutes later. </p><p><strong>Verdict: </strong>I would absolutely buy this and eat it again.</p><h2><strong>The vanilla-cream brioche looked and smelled like something I'd be proud to bring to someone's house </strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="brioche bread" height="802" width="1070" msid="77951963" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p><a href="https://www.insider.com/what-chefs-get-at-dunkin-their-favorite-doughnuts">Whenever I look at a pastry</a>, I think, "Could I bring this to my aunt's house on Christmas?" In this instance, the answer is yes. The bread itself was dense, but not heavy, and the touch of vanilla was just enough. </p><p><strong>Verdict: </strong>If I had house guests over, I would hide this loaf from them so I could eat it all myself. </p><h2><strong>The original beef biltong is a dream for those who love meat</strong></h2><div type="image" title="beef bitlong aldi" height="2556" width="3408" msid="77951966" hostid="261"></div><p>Biltong is a form of cured, dried meat with Southern African roots and it tends to be thicker and more slowly created than jerky. </p><p>This snack definitely seemed like a thing my jacked friends would carry around in their backpack between workouts.</p><p>It didn't taste like jerky — and I feel like a jerk for thinking it would. The biltong was somewhat tougher and it didn't taste like it has the same preservatives. </p><div type="image" title="beef bitlong aldi" height="3024" width="4032" msid="77951968" hostid="261"></div><p>Biltong <a href="https://www.insider.com/giving-up-meat-experience-2019-5">is a meat lovers' paradise</a>. If you don't like beef, you will likely not enjoy this and its slight hint of spice. The snack largely has what I can only describe as "meat flavor," which is sharp and gets more pronounced as you chew. </p><p><strong>Verdict: </strong>I'd buy this again, but only because I really like beef. </p><h2><strong>I couldn't put down the Simply Nature organic, white-cheddar puffs</strong></h2><div type="image" title="white cheddar puff" height="888" width="1184" msid="77951969" hostid="261"></div><p>I'm no cheddar hound, but these were extremely snackable. </p><p>This tasted more like corn than, shall we say, macaroni in a pot, as I was hoping. I saw some pepper sprinkled on top, but couldn't taste it.</p><p>I went back and forth on my verdict for these since being snackable doesn't always equal greatness. I can eat a lot of these, but I can't see myself craving them. </p><p><strong>Verdict: </strong>I'd eat the heck out of these in a friend's basement but probably wouldn't buy them for myself. </p><h2><strong>These cheddar-flavored cauliflower crackers are vegan </strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="cauliflower crackers" height="900" width="1200" msid="77951971" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>Cauliflower is a really unique vegetable, and I think it can be great in snacks if used correctly, like here. These had a slight cauliflower taste at the end, which wasn't bad. Plus there was <a href="https://www.insider.com/best-cheeses-according-to-cheesemongers-chefs-2019-2">an excellent cheddar flavor</a> before that. </p><p>The bottom line is, I think you'd have a decent chance to trick a kid with these cheesy snacks. The conversation would go something like this: "Yeah, they're pretty cheesy, right? Yeah, good. Oh, you can't stop eating them? Cool that I let you eat junk <keyword id="6181" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Food">food</keyword>, huh? Psych! I gave an audible "mmm" as I ate these because they were so delicious. The chocolate in these was excellent, but there was just something missing with the coconut. It almost got buried here, not highlighted. </p><p>These were delicious but not as good as the toasted-coconut Cookie Thins. </p><div type="image" title="20200810_191828" height="2716" width="3622" msid="77951978" hostid="261"></div><p>Though this dessert had deficiencies, it seems like a good option for a chocolate lover who wants something sweet. </p><p><strong>Verdict: </strong>I wouldn't buy these, but I'd eat them at a friend's house. </p><h2><strong>The Moser Roth dark sea-salt caramel bar felt fancy</strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="The Moser Roth bar" height="2448" width="3264" msid="77951982" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>This <a href="https://www.insider.com/book-a-cruise-dedicated-to-chocolate-in-europe-2019-10">chocolate bar was as sophisticated as its name</a>. It's the kind of snack would be served with a small glass of port, whatever that is, after a dinner party.</p><p>There was just the right amount of salt, and the chocolate was smooth and dark, like a novel by Henry James. The caramel was a little too understated for my unrefined palate, even though I still thoroughly enjoyed it.</p><p>This is certainly something for a chocolate lover to <em>savor</em>; I just prefer to <em>devour</em>.</p><p><strong>Verdict: </strong>I wouldn't complain if this was given to me, even though I probably wouldn't buy it for myself. </p><h2><strong>The Happy Farms light string cheese was tasty and convenient </strong></h2><div type="image" title="string cheese from aldi" height="900" width="1200" msid="77951984" hostid="261"></div><p>First off, it's wild that it's acceptable to eat a string of cheese, but people look at me funny when I carry a block of mozzarella around in my pocket and bite into it like an apple. </p><p>Anyway, this was delicious. Few things are better than a slightly rubbery string cheese. There was a slight bounce when I chewed. </p><div type="image" title="string cheese" height="2534" width="3379" msid="77951987" hostid="261"></div><p>Though I generally prefer a wet mozzarella, this was quite good and possessed a nice milky flavor. </p><p><strong>Verdict: </strong>I'd absolutely buy this. </p><h2><strong>The Sundae Shoppe sea-salt caramel ice cream disappointed me a bit</strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="aldi protein ice cream" height="2736" width="3648" msid="77951989" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>This ice cream is advertised as "a good source of protein," but 20 grams of protein in one pint isn't actually that much. I looked up pints of Ben and Jerry's and realized some of their standard flavors, like Berry Sweet Marscapone, <a href="https://www.benjerry.com/flavors/berry-sweet-mascarpone-ice-cream/pint">have the same amount of protein per pint.</a></p><p>Still, this Sundae Shoppe offering has way fewer calories than a usual pint of ice cream.</p><p><strong><div type="image" title="aldi protein ice cream" height="2592" width="3456" msid="77951993" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>This was delicious, but it weirdly tasted like toffee, not the smooth caramel that I'm used to or wanted. </p><p>It contains milk protein concentrate — not an ingredient in standard ice cream — and I could taste it. This felt more like a frozen caramel protein shake than ice cream. </p><p><strong>Verdict: </strong>I'm sure this is a great option for those who are following some tight dietary restrictions or who want some low-calorie, protein-heavy sweets, but I wouldn't buy this. </p><h2><strong>Sundae Shoppe's mini ice-cream cookie sandwiches seemed like a genius idea</strong></h2><div type="image" title="ice cream sandwich aldi" height="2556" width="3408" msid="77951996" hostid="261"></div><p>The cookie itself was a bit soggy, even though I took it straight out of the freezer. Sogginess aside, the lack of vanilla flavor was the real issue. It got lost in the cookie shuffle.</p><p>I wanted a strong vanilla flavor to balance out the chocolate, but this just tasted like a cookie filled with whipped cream. In this case, the concept was better than the execution. </p><p><strong>Verdict: </strong>I would not buy these. They're tasty, but there are better options in the freezer aisle. </p><h2><strong>Overall, the best snack in this group has to be the toasted-coconut Cookie Thins </strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="cookie thins" height="2880" width="3840" msid="77951999" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>There were a lot of great choices — and a lot of snacks I'd buy in the future — but I just can't stay away from the toasted-coconut Cookie Thins.</p><p>They had just the right amount of sweetness, which was offset by the perfect amount of butteriness. </p><p>The cookies were so delicious and so easy to eat that I felt like I was missing something when I was done. With the new labels, Panera aims to make things more straightforward, both setting itself apart from the competition and educating customers. </p><p>As part of that education, Panera is producing its own <a href="https://www.panerabread.com/en-us/food-interrupted.html">original series called "Food Interrupted,"</a> streaming online and on the chain's Facebook page. The series - which Hurst says rarely mentions Panera - focuses on different types of foods, kicking off with a grain-centric episode starring New York City chef <a href="http://marcussamuelsson.com/about/">Marcus Samuelsson.</a></p><p>"I think one of the things we have got to do though is be careful and not make this ... all about Panera, because then it's just another marketing campaign," Hurst said.</p><p>"Clearly we want to sell more food, let's face it," he added. Toast is beginning to go the way of chocolate, cheese, and coffee - becoming "artisanal."</p><p><a href="http://www.themillsf.com/#about">The Mill</a>, a café and bakery near the Alamo Square neighborhood of San Francisco, sells slices of toast that make the mushy slices of Wonder Bread from your childhood look like water crackers.</p><p>The Mill's inch-and-a-half-thick slabs of doughy goodness are toasted on high and served with locally sourced butters and jams.</p><p>And they come at a price - a whopping $4 for a single slice.</p><p>Not surprisingly, the <a href="http://venturebeat.com/2013/08/21/4-toast-why-the-tech-industry-is-ruining-san-francisco/">media has not been kind</a> to the trend's proprietors, saying that it reaches "<a href="http://kitchenette.jezebel.com/artisanal-toast-is-apparently-a-fucking-thing-now-1584472659">an incomprehensible level of pretentiousness</a>." We spoke with The Mill's co-owner and toastmaster Josey Baker - yes, his real last name is Baker and his title is "toastmaster" - about why artisanal toast is the greatest thing since sliced bread.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Melia Robinson/Business Insider</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>In summer 2011, <span>Baker, a </span>born and raised Vermonter, got an invitation from the founder of a local coffee chain, Four Barrel Coffee, to collaborate on a café near Alamo Square. Baker had previously been baking bread in his home kitchen and delivering loaves to bakeries, pizzerias, and grocers on his bike.</p><p>Baker's answer to the collaboration question: "After I s--- my pants I told him yes."</p><p>As the café - which is now a sunbathed space with wood-beam ceilings and graphic prints on the wall - was being built, Baker ran a pop-up tent on location. They wanted to offer customers something to eat with a cup of coffee, and since Baker didn't make cookies, croissants, or muffins, he brought his toaster from home and got to work.</p><p>"At that point, it wasn't, like, 'We're going to become known for our toast.' "Growing up, I would eat toast with butter and cinnamon sugar," Baker says. "It's actually not very creative, but it did seem to strike a chord with people."</p><p>The Country bread, which uses a blend of bread flour and whole wheat, sourdough culture, and sea salt, is prepared Baker's way. The menu has three toasts and a weekly special, based on seasonal ingredients. Customers can mix and match spreads, such as almond butter, strawberry and blackberry jam, maple syrup, and a housemade version of Nutella.</p><p>Each loaf takes about 48 hours to complete, and it all begins with the grain. A beautiful birchwood mill sits in a closet-sized room and grinds 300 pounds of whole grains into flour every day. They never sift out the germ, the part of the grain that contains many B vitamins, protein, minerals, and healthy fats, so the bread keeps its nutritive qualities.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Melia Robinson/Business Insider</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>The Mill uses a lot more water in its recipes that most bakeries, because a moister dough makes for a moister bread. They emerge crispy on the outside, with burnt ends adding texture and flavor, and soft and chewy on the inside. Baker wasn't kidding when he said he likes the ends burnt. Most significant, the toast reminded my taste buds of the big pancake breakfasts I shared with my family in New Hampshire. It tasted, well, wholesome.</p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">I would gladly fork another $4 again.</span></p><p>"For me, toast is comforting, unintimidating, and delicious. It's the same experience for most people," Baker says. "We take something very simple and try to nail every aspect of it ...
