This is true both with regards to underlying technology and market infrastructure.Many still think that cryptoassets are not shortable, that there are no derivatives, and that SEC-qualified custodians don't exist, that there are no prime brokerage services, and that exchanges are unregulated.All of these views are incorrect.At the start of 2017, the market infrastructure could be accurately characterized as above. But over the course of 2017 many institutional investors began to recognize the <a href="https://multicoin.capital/2018/10/09/100-trillion/">$100 trillion opportunity</a> that crypto represents and began aggressively investing in crypto market infrastructure.On the exchange and asset management front, the NYSE, CME, and CBOE, Fidelity, and Goldman Sachs. Among VCs, Andreessen Horowitz, Union Square Ventures, Craft Ventures, Tiger Global, Sequoia, and many others invested in picks-and-shovels crypto companies. Among traditional Wall Street trading firms, DRW, Jump Trading, Susquehanna International Group, and others began making markets programmatically, offering OTC trading, and arbitraging. Most recently, JP Morgan announced <a href="https://www.jpmorgan.com/global/news/digital-coin-payments">JPM coin</a>, a tool for settling inter-bank transfers more quickly and efficiently.Although most of the crypto-infrastructure-building activity that took place in 2017 was unknown to most, we started to see the fruits of those labors in 2018, and can expect quite a bit more in 2019.<h2>Custody</h2>Today there are two SEC qualified crypto custodians: Coinbase Custody, and BitGo (backed by Goldman Sachs). Additionally, Bakkt, which is a spinout of the NYSE, will be an SEC qualified custodian when it launches later this year.These firms are custodying not only Bitcoin, but an array of other digital assets. When we launched Multicoin Capital in October 2017, we were forced to self-custody the fund's assets. Today, we don't custody any assets ourselves. Custodians are adding support for new digital assets every month.Digital asset custody is not yet as mature as equity custody. The biggest limitation in custody today is lack of support for intraday and high-frequency trading (HFT) strategies. However, the industry has made tremendous progress, and the custody solutions that are available today are sufficient for investors who don't require rapid intraday movements.<h2 dir="ltr">Prime brokerage</h2>Service providers such as <a href="https://www.coindesk.com/fidelity-reveals-cryptocurrency-and-digital-asset-trading-platform" target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-saferedirecturl="https://www.google.com/url?q=https://www.coindesk.com/fidelity-reveals-cryptocurrency-and-digital-asset-trading-platform&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1553789179724000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGbkMT30r8KHAvEO7gUUUURjc0koA">Fidelity</a> are launching trading and custodial services for enterprise clients. They are joined by Tagomi, an institutional broker led by Greg Tusar, the former global head of Goldman Sachs's equities trading business. High-quality service providers such as Fidelity and Tagomi provide the services institutional investors have come to expect from the traditional financial markets.<h2 dir="ltr">Regulated exchanges</h2>CME and CBOE have been trading cash-settled Bitcoin futures for more than a year. And CBOE has <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ether-futures-on-the-way-at-cboe-2018-8" target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-saferedirecturl="https://www.google.com/url?q=https://www.businessinsider.com/ether-futures-on-the-way-at-cboe-2018-8&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1553789179724000&amp;usg=AFQjCNF2LGhiJ4RnVKkJv9EA9VxA_yIfRw">stated</a> that they're considering adding Ether futures. Nasdaq <a href="https://www.coindesk.com/nasdaq-vaneck-partner-to-launch-crypto-2-0-futures-contracts" target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-saferedirecturl="https://www.google.com/url?q=https://www.coindesk.com/nasdaq-vaneck-partner-to-launch-crypto-2-0-futures-contracts&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1553789179724000&amp;usg=AFQjCNEc5iHJr8hlrdKlrvwAUnqtNl8F4A">stated</a> they're going to launch Bitcoin futures in the first half of 2019. The pace of market development is compounding rapidly.Although crypto market infrastructure is not as mature as that of equities or FX, it will approach those levels much faster than most people realize because of the incredible nature of compounding. The crypto markets are now at a point in which investors can construct portfolios based of well-defined theses and hedge out many forms of risk. Albeit still a bit manual, it's now completely doable.By the end of this year, investors will be able to plug into a single prime broker and access spot and derivatives for the top assets from global liquidity pools. As these last few pieces come together, we expect the number of market participants to expand quickly as crypto will look and feel like more mature markets. That describes Kyle Samani's journey to becoming a technology entrepreneur.Samani, 28, is a cofounder and managing partner of Multicoin Capital, a fund based in Austin, Texas, that exclusively invests in the crypto space. He was also <a href="https://www.forbes.com/30-under-30/2019/finance/#edef2b7e8067">recently named to Forbes' "30 Under 30" finance list</a>.Samani started programming at age 11, but he didn't think he was born to be an entrepreneur. He went to New York University to study finance and thought he would climb the corporate ladder on Wall Street. But after college, he realized his passion was really in high-growth technology businesses and startups.In 2013, Samani cofounded his first company, Pristine, which built Google Glass software for surgeons. Though Google Glass was not a well-received consumer product, it was an interesting tool for certain types of workers, Samani said.Despite raising over $5 million in venture capital and hiring about 30 employees, Samani ended up finding a new strategy for Pristine after Google halted consumer sales of Google Glass in 2015.In March 2016, Samani stumbled upon Ethereum, which opened the next chapter in his life and eventually led him to the world of crypto investment. Samani said he was drawn to Ethereum because of its open-source platform."I felt the pain of platform risk when Google literally pulled the rug out from under me," he said. The idea of having an open platform where this couldn't happen was appealing to him.He spent hours learning about cryptocurrency and launched Multicoin Capital in August 2017."In our early days, we were really hustlers," Samani said."When we were raising early capital, we had no brand, no track record, and no operational infrastructure," he added. "There are going to be days that you feel everything is going wrong. The way you will make it through this is by fixating on what you are really, truly passionate about. So, find your passion, and figure out how to do that 20 hours per day."Don't be afraid to ask for help."People in the entrepreneur world come from all different majors. If you need help with meeting investors, thinking about financial modeling, and recruiting, just ask these people. Even if they are not the right person to help you, they will probably know somebody who is."Be thankful and gracious to the people around you."The entrepreneur community today is so robust and helpful. Reach out to make those people help you, and then return the favor as hard as you can. Sometimes you won't be able to return a favor, but at the very least reach out and let them know you're grateful. I just considered it as my personal mandate to pay it forward. I cannot repay a lot of help, so I pay it forward to the next batch of entrepreneurs. The growth of decentralized exchanges Samani is closely watching Binance, the world's largest crypto exchange by adjusted trade volume, <a href="https://medium.com/binanceexchange/watch-our-new-binance-dex-sneak-peek-8b942cc733d2https://medium.com/binanceexchange/watch-our-new-binance-dex-sneak-peek-8b942cc733d2">which is poised to </a>unveil its decentralized exchange early this year. It'll be a massive shift in the crypto space, Samani says.In contrast to centralized exchanges, decentralized exchanges (DEXs) allow investors to hold their own digital assets, instead of leaving them to middlemen to custody. In addition, DEXs are praised for generating lower, or even zero, trading fees, greater security and more private transactions. Although a growing number of decentralized exchanges have launched over the past couple of years, they haven't yet generated mass adoption. But that may change as Binance enters into the space, said Samani. Binance, which processes more daily trading volume than top US exchanges like Coinbase and Gemini, already has an established brand. So it may be able to lure customers to use its decentralized exchange, Samani said. "Binance realizes that the greatest disruptive threat to their business is decentralized exchanges," he said. "On a long enough time scale, they believe it is likely to become a dominant form of exchange. As such, they're aiming to disrupt themselves by pioneering here. I expect that they will create incentives to encourage customers to trade on the decentralized exchange instead of the centralized one, and will actively bridge liquidity pools."Once Binance unveils its decentralized exchange, others may follow, he said.Still, decentralized exchanges in the US must comply with existing securities laws. The SEC in November <a href="https://www.sec.gov/news/press-release/2018-258">brought an enforcement action</a> against EtherDelta, a decentralized crypto exchange, for operating as an unregistered national securities exchange. "Whether it's decentralized or not, whether it's on a smart contract or not, what matters is it's an exchange," Robert Cohen, SEC's Cyber Unit Chief, told <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/michaeldelcastillo/2018/11/09/new-sec-cyber-chief-puts-cryptocurrency-exchanges-on-notice/#5c06eed82fb8">Forbes</a> in November. Adoption of blockchain products Samani also expects to see a number of high profile blockchain products launch this year and attract large group of customers. One such project is Tari, an open source project that aims to disrupt the ticketing industry. A benefit of using this technology in ticketing is embedding transfer restrictions on concert tickets, which could eradicate the ticket scalping market.Challenges to Ethereum Samani believes that a group of well-funded projects, like Dfinity and Cosmos, could pose a threat to Ethereum's leadership as the largest smart contract platform. Ether, which is underpinned by the Ethereum network, is currently the third largest cryptocurrency by market cap. "All of the new blockchains are aiming to challenge Ethereum," Samani said. "I expect by the end of the year the percentage of total developers building on Ethereum will be lower than it's right now, simply because of the competition," he said. So the most important thing is to show up and listen, and be there to absorb knowledge. People are investing in you and they can teach you.You should also always ask yourself the question "Why?" And I break it down into three types of whys. One is "Why am I the best for this job?" If you can't answer that, you should probably not be doing what you're doing. Do something that you can be amazing at and be in the top 1% of performers. Because if not, you're wasting your talent. The other is "Why am I different than other applicants?" And this is something that's super important, because the difference is oftentimes better than being the best of something. So if you can distinguish yourself, be different and have a different approach and understand why you are different - you can really explain your value add and understand where you're going in your career.Then the last one - which is really a mental health check - is "Why do I want to do this?" So they decided to invent an international credit passport system that allows people's data to follow them from country to country. Nova Credit was started as a Stanford graduate research project, but it's gained rapid adoption since then. Digital currencies, such as Bitcoin, are powered by distributed ledger technology and are not controlled by a centralized authority. The market for such currencies has exploded with over 800 coins on the market with a combined marketcap of $166 billion. Autonomous NEXT, a fintech analytics firm, released a list of 55 cryptocurrency hedge funds on Tuesday, illustrating the mounting interest in the space. "Like wild mushrooms, crypto hedge funds have been taking root in the volatile and unregulated soil of the crypto economy," Autonomous NEXT said in a post on their <a href="https://next.autonomous.com/thoughts//how-many-crypto-hedge-funds-can-you-count">website.</a> "So we went digging, and digging and digging," the firm added. Many of the firms sport crypto-themed names such as Ether Capital, an homage to the token powering the ethereum blockchain, and Medici Capital. 1confirmation is one of the youngest funds on the list. Hedge funds are cashing in on bitcoin mania - there are now 50 dedicated to cryptocurrencies

It also surpassed Ethereum as the second largest cryptocurrency by market cap, according to <a href="http://coinmarketcap.com/">CoinMarketCap.com</a>.Bitcoin cash, which notably split from the original bitcoin in August, was gaining on its sister coin up until around 2 a.m. ET. It later shed about $1,000 and by 11:35 a.m ET was only trading up 14.7% at $1,525, slipping back below Ethereum's market cap.Still, it was an impressive march for a coin which has spent most of its existence trading between $300 and $500. Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin even chimed in on the news in a tweet late Saturday night to congratulate the coin's main backers.Bitcoin cash's rise appears to have come at the expense of bitcoin, which dropped to a low of $5,512 per coin over night. It hit a record high of $7,828 on Wednesday.By 12 p.m. ET, bitcoin was back up at $6,160.Bitcoin has been sliding since developers behind a split, known as Segwit2X, revoked their support for the plan on Wednesday.Segwit2X would have increased the size of the blocks underpinning the bitcoin blockchain network to enable it to process more transactions more quickly. Backers thought the plan would help the digital currency scale faster.Cryptocurrency experts told Business Insider that backers of Segwit2X are likely dumping their bitcoin and jumping on the bitcoin cash bandwagon. Both Segwit2X and bitcoin cash were conceived with the same intention to help bitcoin scale faster by increasing the size of its blocks."When you look at the trends, it does look like many Segwit2X supporters have switched to bitcoin cash," Abhishek Pitto, CEO of Nucleus Vision, told Business Insider.
