Debt <keyword id="19929240" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mutual-funds" source="keywords">mutual funds</keyword> saw massive outflows of Rs 1,13,833.95 crore in September 2024. Liquid funds made up about 50% of this, witnessing outflows of Rs 72,665.97 crore. This was followed by money market funds, which lost Rs 23,420.84 crore during the month. Investors continued to repose strong faith in <keyword id="20300870" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="equity-mutual-funds" source="keywords">equity mutual funds</keyword>, which saw inflows worth Rs 34,419.26 crore during the month. The momentum in <keyword id="20444306" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sectoral-funds" source="keywords">sectoral funds</keyword> also continued, with them raking in Rs 13,254.63 crore in September. During the month, 4 new sectoral schemes were launched, which gathered a total of Rs 7,842 crore. This was the 43rd consecutive month for positive equities inflows, beginning March 2021. Multi-cap and large and mid-cap funds saw inflows of about Rs 3,500 crore last month, followed by flexi cap funds, which raked in Rs 3,214.57 crore. Amidst ongoing geopolitical concerns, investors chose to stay away from slightly risky investment avenues such as arbitrage funds, which lost Rs 3,531.93 crore during September. Arbitrage funds make money from price differences, which is generated by buying and selling similar securities simultaneously across different markets. Multi-asset allocation funds saw inflows worth Rs 4,070.37 crore during the month. Index funds and gold ETFs also saw funds worth Rs 1,960.29 crore and Rs 1,232.99 crore flowing in, respectively. September saw 13 new index funds launches, which amassed Rs 3,656 crore. All in all, 27 <keyword id="20867320" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="new-schemes" source="keywords">new schemes</keyword> were launched last month, which saw inflows worth Rs 14,575 crore. <h2>SIP accounts, AUM at all-time high</h2>The industry's net AUM (assets under management) stood at Rs 67,09,259.24 crores, with mutual fund folios also touching an all-time high of 21,05,15,684. The retail AUM, which comprises of equity, hybrid and solution oriented schemes, also touched an all-time high of Rs 40,44,098 crore, up from Rs 39,27,594 crore in August 2024. Inflows in SIP (Systematic Investment Plans) remained resilient, and witnessed an all-time high, with the number of new SIPs registered in September registered at 66,38,857. The <keyword id="20876064" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="SIP-AUM" source="keywords">SIP AUM</keyword> was also at its highest ever, at Rs 13,81,703.94 crores for September. This stood at Rs 13,38,944.73 crores for August 2024 The number of SIP accounts were also at their highest ever at 9,87,44,171, along with SIP contribution, which recorded an all-time high of Rs 24,508.73 crores last month. The MF industry also reached the milestone of having 5,01,22,609 unique investors in September.

Sectoral funds continue lapping up investor money, debt funds see massive outflows in September 2024, shows AMFI data

The observation, which is based on 283 open-ended equity diversified funds, cited that 39 per cent of these funds have outperformed their respective benchmarks over the past month, ending July 31st, 2024, The cumulative total of funds that outperformed stood at 109 during the month ending July 2024 (one month). About 24 per cent of schemes outperformed under the large and mid-cap funds, of which 29 were observed. Under the multi-cap funds about 40 per cent of schemes outperformed, whereas in the flexi-cap funds, the percentage of schemes outperforming was 33 per cent. Going further, about 38 per cent of schemes under the midcap outperformed. Interestingly, the data observed that not a single scheme in small-cap funds manages to outperform their respective benchmarks. According to the observations made by L Wealth Management, Value Contra Div Yield Funds was the best-performing category, where 78 per cent of the schemes outperformed the benchmark. It was followed by schemes of large-cap funds and multi-cap funds, which outperformed their respective benchmarks by 58 per cent and 40 per cent respectively, during July 2024. June turned out to be a blockbuster month for thematic/sectoral <keyword id="19929240" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mutual-funds" source="keywords">mutual funds</keyword>, which managed to amass Rs 22,351.69 crore during the month, the highest amongst all equity mutual funds. Overall, equity mutual funds saw <keyword id="19967545" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="inflows" source="keywords">inflows</keyword> worth Rs 40,537 crore, whereas debt mutual funds saw significant outflows of about Rs 1.07 lakh crore. Within this category, liquid and overnight funds saw maximum outflows. As Himanshu Srivastava, Associate Director – Manager Research, Morningstar Investment Research India noted, since June is a quarter end month, debt-oriented schemes, as expected, witnessed a net outflow. Only funds with a duration profile of less than 1 year, like low duration and money market funds, saw inflows. "The net outflow across the board could also be on the back of investors shifting towards equity markets in expectation of better returns, as the equity markets continue to touch all time high levels after the election results were announced. Between May and June, the number of folios in the debt segment fell from 7,091,977 to 7,013,214, which is a drop by 78,763 folios. In May, the number of folios fell by 26,088 folios". "Moreover, uncertainty over the interest rate cut cycle has also been keeping investors in tenterhooks. With no clarity on the probable timing for the beginning of interest rate cut cycle, investors, for a time being, would have decided to adopt a wait and watch approach and stay away from categories which are exposed to interest rate risks such as Dynamic and Gilt", he continued. <h2>SIP figures touch all-time highs</h2> As <keyword id="22344564" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="AMFI-data" source="keywords">AMFI data</keyword> further revealed, the number of new SIPs registered in June 2024 stood at a staggering 55,12,962. With this, the total number of SIP accounts in the country reached 8,98,66,962, inching up marginally from 8,75,89,485 in May 2024. SIP contributions also stood at an all-time high of ₹ 21,262.22 crores in June 2024 as against ₹ 20,904.37 crores in May 2024. The AUM of retail folios, which comprise of equity, hybrid and solution oriented was Rs 36,32,226 crores for June 2024. In <keyword id="22344565" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="hybrid-schemes" source="keywords">hybrid schemes</keyword>, multi-asset allocation funds garnered Rs 3,453.12 crore in June, and Arbitrage funds saw inflows worth Rs 3,836.58 crore. The only hybrid scheme to see net outflows were conservative hybrid funds, which shed Rs 130.57 crore. June marked the 40th consecutive month of positive inflows for <keyword id="20210668" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="equity-funds" source="keywords">equity funds</keyword> since March 2021. As Feroze Azeez, Deputy CEO, Anand Rathi Wealth Limited highlights, "SIP numbers are hitting peaks every month, accumulating a stellar ₹21,260 crore. This strengthens the fact that Indian investors are resilient and are participating in the long-term growth of the market. The overall market behaviour supported by numbers suggests that investors are strategically positioning themselves with cautious yet optimistic approach for long-term growth". Last month, the Indian MF industry hit the Rs 60 trillion mark for the first time. Exactly 10 years ago, in 2014, the industry's AUM stood at Rs 10 lakh crore. Just 6 months ago, its AUM was Rs 51 lakh crore. Anand Vardarajan, Chief Business Officer - Key Clients &amp; Alternate Investments, Tata Asset Management underlines that is growth is a huge validation when it comes to expanding retail investor's base and investors themselves choosing mutual funds as a reliable investment vehicle for wealth creation. This is further underscored by the fact that the addition in six months is equal to what the industry has seen in ten years ago! <h2>Large and Mid Cap funds find investors </h2>After garnering consistently high inflows in the recent past, small cap funds amassed Rs 2,263.47 crore, a slightly sobering figure. Midcap funds saw inflows worth Rs 2,527.84 crore. On the other hand, inflows in large-cap funds dipped at significantly to stand at Rs 970.49 crore. Far more investments went towards the large and mid-cap funds, which saw inflows worth Rs 2,912.19 crore. Melvyn Santarita, Analyst – Manager Research, Morningstar Investment Research India notes that these substantial net inflows can be attributed to the election results announced earlier in the month. Investors have remained optimistic and invested on policy continuity and anticipated reforms, expecting stability within the coalition government at the Centre. It was this optimism that propelled markets to new all-time highs. The multi-cap category witnessed the second highest net inflows in June 2024 among the equity-oriented categories amounting to INR 4,708.5 crores which was its 3rd highest net inflows ever over a monthly period. Categories which are biased towards the large-caps segment like flexicap (Rs 3,058 crores) and Value (Rs 2,027 crores) saw robust inflows during the month. "While markets have been in a prolonged bull run, there are concerns about overvaluations in certain areas, particularly in the mid and small-cap segments. Consequently, investors may be opting to invest in large-cap segments, where valuations are more favorable", Santarita highlighted. "However, they also continued their investments in mid and small caps, since the returns generated by mid and small cap segment over the last few years haven’t got unnoticed. Hence, the categories having substantial exposure in these two segments have witnessed strong net inflows. It is important to note that mid and small cap segments are highly volatile. While they can give exceptionally high return in up markets, they can fall equally hard in down markets. It’s important for investors to take exposure in these funds in line with their risk appetite", he cautioned. However, Hitesh Thakkar, Acting CEO, ITI Mutual Fund is confident of the immense wealth creation opportunities mutual funds will offer in the coming 5-7 years to retail investors. "Mutual fund is one of the preferred, transparent &amp; cost-effective investment products in India and is well accepted by retail investors. The trend is positive for Mutual fund industry future growth. There are chances that Industry will cross milestone of ₹100 lakh crores AUM by 2030”, he says. <h2><keyword id="19895579" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gold" source="keywords">Gold</keyword> continues to glitter </h2>Net flows in Gold ETFs continued to be robust in June 2024, standing at Rs 726 crores. However, this was slightly below the net flows witnessed in May (Rs 827 crores). "Over the years, Gold has gained prominence as an effective diversifier, prompting many investors to include Gold ETFs in their portfolios. Gold prices also saw some slight correction in June which spurred buying from investors", underlines Santarita. However, the reason why inflows in gold ETFs have remained patchy as compared to equity is due to the significant gap in the returns offered. "Gold has done fairly well over the last year but dwarfs in comparison to how equities. Also, some investors could be choosing to opt for a risk-on approach to investing with the anticipation of a reversal in rate cycle going ahead", he continues.

Out of this, liquid funds saw the maximum outflows of Rs 80,354.03 crores. This is generally attributable to investors withdrawing money to meet their advance tax obligations. Overnight funds also saw outflows to the tune of Rs 25,142.72 crores. <keyword id="20296225" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="thematic-funds" source="keywords">Thematic funds</keyword> saw massive inflows of Rs 22,351.69 crore, the highest in <keyword id="20210668" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="equity-funds" source="keywords">equity funds</keyword>, and were the investor's favorite during June 2024, as per <keyword id="22344564" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="AMFI-data" source="keywords">AMFI data</keyword>. About 50% of the inflows in this category came from 9 new NFOs (new fund offers) in this category, which amassed Rs 12,974 crore. In terms of inflows, multi-cap funds came a distant second, garnering Rs 4,708.57 crore last month. Amidst <keyword id="22344565" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="hybrid-schemes" source="keywords">hybrid schemes</keyword>, multi-asset allocation funds, which garnered Rs 3,453.12 crore in June, and Arbitrage funds, which saw inflows worth Rs 3,836.58 crore remained investor favorites. The only hybrid scheme to see net outflows were conservative hybrid funds, which shed Rs 130.57 crore. <h2>Large-cap funds see moderate inflows</h2>Inflows in small cap funds tapered at Rs 2,263.47 crore, slightly below inflows seen by midcap funds, which stood at Rs 2,527.84 crore. It took the MF industry 6 months to cross the Rs 60 lakh crore threshold, from the Rs 50-lakh crore mark. During the month, the number of new MF folios also stood at an all-time high of 19.04 crore. <h2>SIP Inflows at all-time high, <keyword id="20050894" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gold-etfs" source="keywords">Gold ETFs</keyword> glitter hard</h2>SIP inflows for June surpassed the Rs 21,000-crore mark, standing at Rs 21,262 crore, as against Rs 20,904.37 crore in May 2024. Passive mutual funds (ETFs, Index funds) also registered a solid growth, with index funds gathering Rs 5,071.82 crores and other ETFs pulling in Rs 9,134.06 crores. Gold ETFs registered the highest month-on-month growth, gathering Rs 726.16 crore in June. Out of the 17 NFOs which were up for subscription last month, 9 belonged to the thematic fund category, while 2 were index funds. Cumulatively, these NFOs amassed Rs 15,227 crores.

<keyword id="19895437" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="investment" source="keywords">Investment</keyword> in <keyword id="20300870" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="equity-mutual-funds" source="keywords">equity mutual funds</keyword> surged over five-fold to Rs 94,151 crore in the June 2024 quarter against Rs 18,358 crore a year ago, driven by a strong <keyword id="21477327" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="economic-environment" source="keywords">economic environment</keyword>, supportive <keyword id="22575274" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="government-fiscal-policies" source="keywords">government fiscal policies</keyword>, <keyword id="19900618" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="investors" source="keywords">investors</keyword> confidence and robust <keyword id="21990858" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="stock-return" source="keywords">stock return</keyword>. This has also pushed the industry's assets under management (<keyword id="20019621" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="AUM" source="keywords">AUM</keyword>) by 59 per cent to Rs 27.68 lakh crore in June from Rs 17.43 lakh crore a year ago, data from the Association of Mutual Funds in India (<keyword id="20090036" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="AMFI" source="keywords">AMFI</keyword>) showed. The robust gain in the asset base was also replicated in the growth of investors in equity mutual funds, with the number of folios closing at 13.3 crore, adding an investor base of over 3 crore. The significant gain in equity folios indicates broader participation across investor segments, driven by improved <keyword id="19929245" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="financial-literacy" source="keywords">financial literacy</keyword> and accessible investment platforms, Trivesh D, COO of stock trading platform Tradejini, told PTI. According to the AMFI data, equity-oriented mutual fund schemes invested Rs 94,151 crore in the quarter ended June 2024. This comprises Rs 18,917 crore in April, Rs 34,697 crore in May and Rs 40,537 crore in June. The investment in equity-oriented mutual funds jumped five-fold to Rs 94,151 crore in the June quarter from Rs 18,358 crore in the quarter ended June 2023 and increased 32 per cent Rs 71,280 crore witnessed in the preceding March 2024 quarter. "The confluence of political stability, supportive government policies, and a favourable economic environment has significantly contributed to the impressive inflows into equity mutual funds, signalling a positive outlook for the sector," Trivesh said. Strong macroeconomic fundamentals, bolstered by supportive government fiscal policies like higher-than-budgeted tax collection growth, reduced revenue expenditures, and increased capital spending have helped in increasing the allocation to equity mutual funds, Feroze Azeez, Deputy CEO, Anand Rathi Wealth, told PTI. He further said that investors' confidence in the markets and historically strong returns given by Indian equities with relatively low risk also helped investors to move towards equity mutual funds. Additionally, the shift was further fuelled by a transition from traditional investments like deposits to mutual funds in pursuit of higher returns. "The long-term outlook remains positive, with expectations of 11-13 per cent annual returns for Indian equities, and equity mutual funds potentially delivering even higher returns," Azeez said. Within the equity segment, sectoral or thematic category attracted Rs 46,731 crore during the quarter under review, followed by Multi-cap (Rs 10,077 crore), Flexicap (Rs 8,387 crore), Large &amp; Midcaps (Rs 7,948 crore), Smallcap (Rs 7,197 crore) and Midcap (Rs 6,927 crore). Large-cap funds witnessed an infusion of Rs 1,991 crore during the April-June quarter of the current financial year (FY25). Moreover, inflows into the systematic investment plan (<keyword id="19956399" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="SIP" source="keywords">SIP</keyword>) have been rising continuously for the past several months. The monthly SIP contributions crossed the Rs 21,000 crore mark in June, with the total inflow reaching an all-time high of Rs 21,262 crore. This shows investors' commitment to disciplined and long-term investing. The fund infusion through the SIP route was Rs 62,537 crore in the April-June quarter of FY25, a remarkable surge from Rs 43,211 crore in the same quarter preceding the fiscal.

Investment in equity mutual funds surge 5-fold to Rs 94,151 cr in June qtr amid robust eco environment

<ul><li>Flexi cap funds can invest across different market capitalisations such as large, mid and small caps. </li><li>Their appeal lies in the hands-on management provided by a professional, alleviating the need for investors to engage in extensive deliberation. </li><li>Investors are advised a long term horizon, at least five years or more, while investing in flexi cap funds. </li></ul>As of November 30, 2023, the assets under management in the flexi-cap category totaled ₹3.06 lakh crore, making it the largest asset base within the equity category, according to Association of <keyword id="6357979" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mutual-funds" source="Orion">Mutual Funds</keyword> in India (AMFI) data. Market regulator, SEBI had introduced new guidelines for multi-cap funds on September 11, 2020. The main essence of these proposed changes to the multi-cap category was that, starting from January 31, 2021, these funds would be required to allocate a minimum of 25% of their portfolio to large-cap, mid-cap, and small-cap stocks each. After the announcement of the new guidelines regarding multi-cap funds, there were numerous discussions about the potential drawbacks for both investors and the markets. Recognising these concerns, SEBI appeared to acknowledge the issues and subsequently introduced a new category - flexi cap funds in November 2020. Flexi cap funds can invest across different market capitalisations such as large, mid and small caps. The benefit of this strategy is that these funds can tweak the allocation across market cap as per the evolving opportunities. For instance, if the fund manager foresees an impending economic downturn, he or she can tweak the portfolio towards large caps which can give relative stability and protect the downside to some extent. Similarly, having exposure to mid and small cap companies when there is a turnaround helps generate some extra alpha. This flexibility allows fund managers to adjust their portfolio allocations dynamically, taking advantage of changing market dynamics and identifying potential investment opportunities across different segments of the market. “It provides them with the freedom to invest in large-cap stocks when they see valuation comfort in that segment, and similarly, in mid-cap or small-cap stocks when they expect that market cap to do well,” says Amey Sathe, Fund Manager, Tata Mutual Fund. Why the <keyword id="10261513" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="flexicap" source="Orion">flexicap</keyword> fund category is so big The popularity of flexi cap funds stems from their inherent flexibility, sparing investors the need to navigate the complexities of choosing between mid-cap, small-cap, or large-cap investments. “By opting for a flexicap fund, investors can simply allocate their funds to this class, entrusting the fund manager with the responsibility of strategic allocation based on market conditions,” says Soumya Sarkar, Co-Founder, Wealth Redefine, a mutual fund distribution firm. The appeal lies in the hands-on management provided by a professional, alleviating the need for investors to engage in extensive deliberation over whether to focus on large-cap, mid-cap, or small-cap investments – a key reason why flexi cap funds are favoured by investors. Most of the fund managers have been managing this category conservatively with a tilt towards large cap and use mid and small cap portions as a tool to alpha generation. “Given the current scenario where large-cap has not run up much and small-cap has given a tremendous run, investors are allocating into the funds that are heavy on large-cap but at the same time give some flavour of mid and small-cap stocks which is talk of the town,” says Mukesh kochar National Head of Wealth at AUM Capital, a wealth management firm. <keyword id="6374680" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="returns" source="Orion">Returns</keyword> In the last one year, flexi cap funds as a category have given returns of 28.29% according to Valueresearch, while the three-year return has been 19.65%. Flexicap funds are benchmarked against the Nifty 500 Total Return Index (TRI) which has returned 22.51% in the last year. “We expect the category to gain prominence in 2024 considering valuation in various market caps is at crossroads and there is no compulsion to invest in categories wherein valuations are expensive,” says Sathe. <keyword id="17715484" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="should-you-invest" source="Orion">Should you invest</keyword>? Choosing to invest in a flexi-cap fund demands careful thought owing to its high risk nature. Unlike more conservative alternatives like balanced advantage funds, hybrid funds, or large-cap funds, flexi-cap funds carry increased risk by distributing funds across mid-cap and small-cap categories. This renders them inappropriate for risk-averse investors but appealing to those comfortable with higher levels of risk. Investors must recognize that their money, regardless of the amount, will be invested in mid-cap and small-cap categories, requiring a sufficient risk appetite and <keyword id="6133603" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="time-horizon" source="Orion">time horizon</keyword>. “If investors lack these attributes, it may be advisable to avoid flexi-cap funds; however, for those willing to embrace some risk without extensive analysis, flexi-cap funds present a viable investment option,” says Sarkar. Investors should thus have a long term horizon, at least five years or more, while investing in flexi cap funds. Kochar advises that for the first-time investor, it is advisable to go through the balance advantage fund route as these are more stable and less volatile compared to a flexicap fund which is 100% equity-oriented. In comparison, an inflow of around Rs 17,000 crore was seen in the category in December, according to the data released by the <keyword id="20090034" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="association-of-mutual-funds" source="keywords">Association of Mutual Funds</keyword> in <keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india" source="keywords">India</keyword> (<keyword id="6359050" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="amfi" source="Orion">AMFI</keyword>) on Thursday. The flow in January was the highest since March 2022, when equity-oriented mutual funds witnessed an inflow of Rs 28,463 crore. Also, the latest flow marks the 35th consecutive month of net inflows in equity funds. Barring value fund, all categories experienced inflow in equity segments. The category was aided by fund collection to the tune of Rs 4,805 crore in thematic funds, followed by Rs 3,257 crore in small-cap funds and Rs 3,039 crore in multi-cap funds. The highlight of this month was the fund flows into the large-cap category at Rs 1,287 crore, which was at the highest-level in more than 13 months. "With midcaps at 15 per cent and small caps at 20 per cent premiums, investors are realising the considerable valuation gap with the large-cap segment, and accordingly making adjustments to their investments. "Though small-cap funds garnered greater than Rs 3,000 crore of net flows for the fourth consecutive month, the quantum was lower by Rs 600 crore on a month-on-month basis," <keyword id="20504519" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gopal-kavalireddi" source="keywords">Gopal Kavalireddi</keyword>, Vice President of Research at FYERS, said. Apart from equities, debt-oriented schemes witnessed a net inflow of Rs 76,469 crore in January after withdrawing funds in the preceding two months. The segment had witnessed a net outflow of Rs 75,560 crore in December and Rs 4,707 crore in November. Additionally, hybrid schemes saw an inflow of Rs 20,637 crore. Overall, the mutual fund industry has witnessed an inflow of Rs 1.23 lakh crore in the month under review as compared to an outflow of Rs 40,685 crore in December. The strong inflow pushed the mutual fund industry's assets under management to Rs 52.74 lakh crore in January-end as compared to Rs 50.78 lakh crore at the end of December.

A month ahead of Diwali, retail investors chose to tank up on gold funds, going by data released by the Association of Mutual Funds of India (AMFI). Moreover, the weightage on sectors like auto, utilities and insurance stocks increased significantly while sectors such as banking saw a moderation. Investments in gold ETFs (exchange traded funds) grew by a whopping 472% at ₹841 crore in October compared to ₹147 crore in the same period last year. But that is not all, retail investors are now mature and picking themes with a view on higher value creation over the long term. The month of October reflects this trend quite clearly. As large caps continue to struggle, retail investors continue to bulk up on small and midcap funds that have already delivered over 40% returns this year. After a short blip in September, small cap funds attracted higher inflows to the tune of around ₹4,495 crore in October, up from ₹2,678 crore in September. According to ICRA Analytics, for a country to grow it should grow intrinsically strong and adopt a bottoms-up approach. The government is focusing on this and is making policies to strengthen such small companies. This is likely to augur well for small and mid-sized firms and would help in higher value creation. G. Pradeepkumar, CEO, Union Mutual Fund, says: “If one takes into account the allocations to mid and small caps in categories such as multicap, flexicap and large &amp; mid Cap, it appears that anywhere from 40% to 50% of the total net flows could have gone to mid and small-cap stocks. While the long-term outlook for these companies is positive, investors should remain cautious about the possibility of short-term market volatility and consider a staggered approach to their investments.” It is not just betting on smaller stocks that will lead to higher value creation that shows that the Indian retail investor has evolved. Analysis shows that the pace of redemptions slowed down to Rs 26,000 crore (down 14.8% month-on-month). Consequently, net inflows accelerated to ₹22,000 crore in October from ₹15,500 crore in September 2023. Financialisation of savings is a big trend that has been playing out since 2016 in India. The retail investor’s faith in the India story has not faded despite the headwinds. Explains Ashwini Kumar, Head Market Data, ICRA Analytics, “Net inflows during the month of October 2023 have grown by a whooping 473% at ₹80,528 crore, as against ₹14,047 crore in October 2022.” The sectoral shift The story gets even more interesting when one digs deeper into the monthly flows. Net inflows into equity-oriented schemes grew by 113% at ₹19,957 crore in October, up from ₹9,390 crore in the same period last year. According to analysis done by Motilal Oswal Financial Services (MOFS), the month saw notable changes in the sector and stock allocation of funds. Retail investors are doubling down on automobiles, utilities, consumer and insurance sectors. On a MoM basis, the weights of all these sectors increased while that of banks (Private &amp; PSU) , technology, capital goods, and metals moderated. The weight of automobiles jumped to an almost five-year (59-month) high of 8.4% (up 10 basis points month-on-month and +70 basis point year-on-year) in October 2023. Utilities’ weight climbed for the second consecutive month to a 38-month high of 3.9% (+10bp MoM, +60bp YoY), says MOFS. The weightage for private banks moderated for the fourth consecutive month to 18.7% (-20bp MoM, flat YoY) in October 2023. PSU Banks overall weight declined to 3% (-20bp MoM, -70bp YoY) and this is the lowest since February 2021.

Markets regulator, the <keyword id="6355630" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="securities-and-exchange-board-of-india">Securities and Exchange Board of India</keyword> (<keyword id="35210" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="sebi">SEBI</keyword>) on Sunday clarified that mutual funds have many options to meet requirements of the circular on asset allocation of multi-cap funds, based on the preference of their unit-holders. In a clarification issued on Sunday, the SEBI said apart from rebalancing their portfolio in the multi-cap schemes, mutual funds could facilitate switch to other schemes by unit-holders, merge their multi-cap scheme with their large-cap scheme or convert their multi-cap scheme to another scheme category, for instance, large-cum-mid-cap scheme. <keyword id="119509" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kotak-Mutual-Fund">Kotak Mutual Fund</keyword> has welcomed the SEBI clarification. Nilesh Shah, Managing Director, Kotak AMC, said in a tweet: "Immense gratitude to SEBI for issuing clarification on a Sunday evening. We will ensure compliance with SEBI Regulations in letter as well as spirit &amp; optimize risk adjusted return for our Investors. Don't take Investment decisions in haste." The SEBI said it is conscious of market stability and therefore, has given time to mutual funds till January 31, 2021 to achieve compliance with the circular, through their preferred route, of which rebalancing of the portfolio is only one such route. "It is reiterated that to achieve the desired objective of True to Label and Appropriate Benchmarking, the SEBI will examine proposals of the industry, if any, received in this regard," it said. The SEBI has issued a circular dated September 11, on multi-cap schemes of mutual funds, requiring them to invest a minimum of 25 per cent each in large, mid and small-cap stocks, with the balance 25 per cent giving flexibility to the fund manager. The regulator said the circular was issued as a need was felt to review the scheme characteristics of multi-cap schemes and take necessary steps to clearly distinguish these from other category of schemes. Multi-cap schemes had flexibility in terms of allocation to large, mid and small-cap stocks. "However, it has recently been observed that some multi-cap schemes have skewed portfolios, with over 80 per cent of investment in large-cap stocks akin to large-cap schemes, and some multi-cap schemes have near zero or insignificant asset allocation to small-cap companies," it said. As per the SEBI circular, it was anticipated that there could be a large inflow of funds into small-cap stocks to meet the requirement of minimum 25 per cent asset allocation.
