Lower costs will encourage more people to invest in the yellow metal, both as a commodity and as a financial asset, experts say. Analysts said customs duty cut has made gold imports cheaper. The move will help curb the rampant issue of gold smuggling, leading to growth in the organised <keyword id="22107284" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="jewellery-sector" source="keywords">jewellery sector</keyword>. "The cut in basic <keyword id="20330317" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="custom-duty" source="keywords">custom duty</keyword> on gold prices makes the yellow metal cheaper. While this can lead to weaker market sentiments due to the sudden change, <keyword id="19972907" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="retail-investors" source="keywords">retail investors</keyword> stand to benefit from the new, more attractive pricing for gold," said Jateen Trivedi, VP Research Analyst of Commodity and Currency at LKP Securities Echoing similar sentiments, Krishnan R, Director &amp; CEO of Unimoni Financial Services said lower costs will encourage more people to invest in gold, both as a commodity and as a financial asset, which is often seen as a hedge against inflation and currency devaluation. Following the <keyword id="19936553" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="budget" source="keywords">budget</keyword> announcement by finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman that the government has slashed basic customs duties on gold and silver from 15 per cent to 6 per cent, gold prices crashed by Rs 3,350 to Rs 72,300 per 10 grams in the national capital on Tuesday. The precious metal prices continued the downtrend and plunged by Rs 650 on Wednesday. The yellow metal rates saw another steep fall on Thursday, nosediving by Rs 1,000 to settle at Rs 70,650 per 10 grams, as per the All India Sarafa Association. After the duty cut, the yellow metal has declined Rs 5,000 per 10 grams or 7.1% in the past three sessions, since July 23 when it had fallen Rs 3,350 to end at Rs 72,300 per kg. Also, gold of 99.5% purity declined by Rs 1,000 to Rs 70,300 per 10 grams on Thursday. It had also lost ground by Rs 5,000 per 10 grams in the previous three sessions. On Thursday, silver rates also lost ground by Rs 3,500 per kg to Rs 84,000 per kg. In the past three sessions, the rates of the bright metal fell sharply by Rs 7,000 or 8.3% to Rs 84,000 per kg from Rs 91,000 per kg. Traders also said that a sharp correction in gold prices have revived the demand for jewellery among consumers as they flocked to jewellery outlets to take advantage of lower prices. "The reduction in basic custom duties have spurted the demand for jewellery in the domestic markets. Further, this will act as a sales booster for jewellers before the festive seasons, encouraging fresh buying by the consumers due to lower prices," PC Jeweller's Managing Director Balram Garg. Low gold prices will help domestic jewellers, particularly the organised ones, Garg said. According to MP Ahammed, Chairman, Malabar Group, the reduction has been a long-standing demand of traders in the gold sector, as it is expected to curb the rampant issue of gold smuggling, which poses a substantial threat to the Indian economy. "With the new rates, the duty on one kilogram of gold drops from Rs 9.82 lakh to Rs 3.93 lakh, making smuggling less attractive and more manageable. "This move will help dismantle the mafia chain involved in smuggling, leading to growth in the organised jewellery sector and increasing government revenue through GST and income tax," Ahammed said. Meanwhile, in futures trade on the <keyword id="20316358" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="multi-commodity-exchange" source="keywords">Multi Commodity Exchange</keyword> (MCX), gold futures have partially recovered on Friday, after three days of slump. The most traded August contract jumped Rs 288 to Rs 67,750 per 10 grams on the MCX. It had settled at Rs 67,462 per 10 grams in the previous session on Thursday. However, silver contracts for September delivery continued its downward trend by declining Rs 241 to Rs 81,090 per kg. It had closed at Rs 81,331 per kg in the previous session on Thursday. Experts anticipate stability in bullion prices once there is clarity on several economic and political factors such as interest rate cut by the <keyword id="19901377" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="us-federal-reserve" source="keywords">US Federal Reserve</keyword>. "Stability in gold prices is expected once there is clarity on several economic and political factors including, potential interest rate cuts in the US and India, and the outcome of the US Presidential elections will provide a clear direction for gold prices," Trivedi said.

On the domestic futures, he said that the overall trend will be sideways to marginally bullish in today's session. Silver futures traded on a subdued note on Tuesday after opening higher. The September contract of silver on the MCX was trading at ₹67,228 per kg, lower by ₹18 from its previous close. Silver future opened on a positive note at ₹67,409, slightly gapped higher from previous closing, trading with sideways to moderately positive trend in Tuesday morning. "The price dropped in previous session as dollar edged higher, weighing on silver and generating headwinds for the entire precious metals complex. US Yields moved lower as investors moved into safe-haven assets. Gold futures on Multi Commodity Exchange rise on global cues, rising concerns of COVID-19 'Delta' variant

Mumbai, Nov 24 (IANS) Futures of <keyword id="18712" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="Gold">gold</keyword>, which were soaring well above the ₹ 50,000 mark till sometime back amid the weak <keyword id="906427" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Economic-scenario">economic scenario</keyword>, have now started to ease and have fallen below the ₹ 49,000-mark amid optimism regarding vaccines for the novel Coronavirus. The December contract of gold on the <keyword id="109771" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Multi-Commodity-Exchange">Multi Commodity Exchange</keyword> (MCX) is currently trading at ₹ 48,975 per 10 gram, lower by ₹ 505 or 1.02 per cent from its previous close. Similarly, domestic futures of silver also continued its downward trend on Tuesday and its December contract on the MCX is currently at ₹ 59,825 per kg, lower by ₹ 700 or 1.16 per cent from its previous close. Anuj Gupta, DVP for Commodities and Currencies Research at Angel Broking Ltd said that noted that the decline has been on the back of recovery in global equity market and development on the front of corona virus <keyword id="24209" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="vaccine">vaccine</keyword>. Optimism has been fueled in the global markets after the recent series of positive announcements on the vaccine front. One dosing regimen showed vaccine efficacy of 90 per cent when 'AZD1222' was given as a half dose, followed by a full dose at least one month apart, and another dosing regimen showed 62 per cent efficacy when given as two full doses at least one month apart. The combined analysis from both dosing regimens resulted in an average efficacy of 70 per cent. All results were statistically significant. More data will continue to accumulate and additional analysis will be conducted, refining the efficacy reading and establishing the duration of protection. Earlier Pfizer and Moderna had reported their vaccines of being highly effecting.

The recent fall in domestic gold prices is in line with the <keyword id="59577" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Global-trend">global trend</keyword>, where prices of the precious metal fell amid a strengthening US dollar "Prices have been falling sharply in the last few sessions as the dollar held on to its recent rally while a lack of additional stimulus to aid the recovery of the Coronavirus-battered global economy further weighed on sentiments," said a report by ICICI Securities. It further said that gold prices are likely to remain under pressure for the short-term and fall towards an immediate support of Rs 49,000 per 10 gram. Gold prices down 3% in last one week, analysts expect further decline

New Delhi, <keyword id="6358192" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="CRUDE">Crude</keyword> oil prices surged on Monday on expectations that '<keyword id="47969" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Opec">OPEC</keyword>+', the cartel of Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and its allied oil producing nations would limit the oil output at the current levels. Brent crude crossed the $53 per barrel mark and touched a multi-month high of $53.17 a barrel. It is the highest level since March 2020. Currently, the March contract of <keyword id="10512675" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="brent-on-the-intercontinental-exchange">Brent on the Intercontinental Exchange</keyword> (ICE) was trading at $53.04 per barrel, higher by 2.39% from its previous close. Similarly, the February contract of WTI crude on <keyword id="140139" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="NYMEX">NYMEX</keyword> was trading at $49.53 per barrel, higher by 2.08% from its previous close. Market anticipates that in February the production levels of crude would remain at the same level as last year and with elevated demand, prices could remain firm. On Sunday, <keyword id="3822156" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="mohammad-barkindo">Mohammad Barkindo</keyword>, Secretary General of OPEC, said that while crude demand is expected to rise by 5.9 million barrels per day (bpd) to 95.9 million bpd this year, the cartel sees plenty of downside demand risks in the first half of 2021. Crude oil prices surge on hopes that OPEC+ will limit the output at current levels

A year after Forward Markets Commission (<keyword id="92906" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="FMC">FMC</keyword>) was merged with <keyword id="6355630" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Securities-and-Exchange-Board-of-India">Securities and Exchange Board of India</keyword> (<keyword id="35210" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="sebi">SEBI</keyword>), the latter allowed commodity derivative exchanges to launch options contracts for trading. The objective was to provide more variety of hedging instruments, increase liquidity and attract more investors to the commodities market. 
 
Earlier, only futures on commodities were allowed to trade on the exchange. Now commodities exchanges will also be able to launch commodity options products. Launch of options will increase the risk management alternates for market participants. 
 
The impact of commodity price volatility on different stakeholders can be very high in India. Especially in the agricultural sector we have seen severe human consequences of this as well. Crop insurance is helping to offset some of the challenges. However it largely covers risks like loss of crop but does not cover the price risk that farmers are exposed to. Imagine a farmer who can hedge his/her produce in the options market before the growing season by paying a premium and buying a put option (an option to sell produce at a pre-defined price on a future date by paying a fixed premium now). This will ensure that the farmer gets a guaranteed minimum price for his produce. Given that is an option and not an obligation the farmer can choose not to exercise the option and sell his produce at a higher price if the market price is higher when he harvests the crop. This creates a floor for prices and removes a lot of risks while still allowing the farmer to benefit from the upside in case the prices increase. This is a simple instrument which can hedge the risk with a one-time payment and unlike futures does not involve complex daily mark to market/ margin management etc.. 
 
The Minimum Support Price by government for some agri-products also ends up playing a similar role. However, it is not as cost effective and not driven based of efficient market dynamics. 
 
Similar positive impact will pan out for manufacturers and consumers who have significant raw material risk. Option trading will increase their ability to hedge against this risk. Whether it is an airline company hedging price of Jet fuel or a steel mill hedging price of iron or coal, they can focus on their core business rather than worrying about the impact of input price changes etc. 
 
Before an option on commodities can be launched, each exchange will have to get approval from SEBI. SEBI is yet to detail out how these will be managed and some of the key open questions are around how will ‘options exercise’ be managed. There are typically 3 methods – cash delivery, physical delivery or delivery into futures of the underlying commodity. Indian equity options are primarily cash settled however in the commodities world physical delivery or delivery into futures are more common models Delivery into futures or cash settlement makes management of options easier. Financially settled contracts reduce expenses and can streamline operations. It may also help broaden the market participation as folks do not have to worry about the physical delivery. On the other hand, adding support for efficient physical delivery will go a long way in maturing the markets and ensuring appropriate price discovery. Another key item to look out for will be:- what kind of options are allowed. Will it be European Options that can be exercised only on maturity date or American Options that can be exercised on any date? Also expect to see some stringent norms for options writers as they will have to manage a bigger risk. One would expect options to first start from more liquid products like Gold and Crude Oil and slowly move to other categories. Getting it to agricultural markets may take a little longer because of the delivery challenges. Lack of warehouse infrastructure is a bottle-neck and continued focus on that from both central and state governments is helping bridge the gaps. Warehousing regulation, registration, support for electronic negotiable warehouse receipts etc. can go a long way in building an ecosystem to manage the physical product, improve collateral management, and reduce risk of poor quality and physical delivery default. Rollout of Goods and <keyword id="645517" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="services-tax">Services Tax</keyword> (GST) will also help with cross state trading and ease some of the capacity to manage physical delivery. 
 
Accessibility of farmers to this platform may be a challenge. It will be interesting to see if any of this gets tied to the eNAM (electronic national agricultural market) to create a common platform for interfacing with farmers at the mandis. Another idea would be to allow financing players like rural banks, micro finance service firms etc. to facilitate sale of these products along with crop insurance or crop financing. 
 
Market participants will also be eagerly waiting to hear more from SEBI on its intent to allow more products in commodity trading. Recently, products like diamond, cocoa, pig iron etc. were also added to the approved list. There is a long outstanding demand to allow trading in commodity indexes, weather derivatives etc. and participants having been hoping for change in rules for these. Market is also keen to know whether asset managers, banks and mutual funds etc. will be allowed to participate in options trading. This can help increase liquidity and make the markets more robust. 
 <keyword id="162817" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Multi-Commodity-Exchange-of-India-Ltd">Multi Commodity Exchange of India Ltd</keyword> (MCX) and <keyword id="3990106" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="national-commodities-exchange">National Commodities Exchange</keyword> (<keyword id="35258" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="NCDEX">NCDEX</keyword>), the two largest commodities exchanges in the country expect to launch options contracts in the first quarter of 2017. As options are cheaper to trade and provide higher leverage compared to futures, this should lead to some short term revenue cannibalization. There could be some hiccups due to decrease in revenue initially, as some participants move from futures to options. However, in the long run with increased participation, this should be a big positive for the exchanges and brokerages. 
 
Overall this move will increase the depth of the market, provide more cost effective hedging options and ensure liquidity for various participants including farmers and SMEs.

Indian commodity options: Just the right dose for the markets

Riding positive indicators from markets abroad, gold traded on a new record high on the futures trade market in India. It traded at Rs 45,724 per 10 gm on <keyword id="6355409" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="mcx">MCX</keyword> even as silver too was on strong wicket. The high gold price in international market continued for the fifth consecutive day. On <keyword id="57178" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="comex">Comex</keyword>, it rose to a seven-year high. On Multi-Commodity Exchange (MCX), gold prices for June was trading Rs 1515 (3.47 per cent) higher at Rs 45,237 per 10 gm in the morning compared with earlier session. <keyword id="103837" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Angel-Broking">Angel Broking</keyword> Deputy Vice President Anuj Gupta said that the high gold price was expected to continue on a high due to investors interest in precious metals in view of economic uncertainties. Silver was trading on the MCX for Rs 43,275 per kg, an increase of Rs 2052, in the first session. It opened at Rs 42,871 and went up to Rs 43,532. In the international future trades markets, gold was trading on Comex at 1,742.20 dollars to an ounce, which was the second highest since October 18 when it was 1,749.10 dollars. Kedia Advisory Director <keyword id="728300" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ajay-Kedia">Ajay Kedia</keyword> said the high price was due to the fact that gold was seen as a safe investment. Gold was selling for June contract on Comex at 1,711.70 dollars, an increase of 17.80, per ounce. It went up to 1,742 dollars, the highest for seven-and-a-half years. Silver for May contract was selling at 15.55 dollars per ounce, an increase of 2.56 dollars. Market experts said gold prices could touch 2,000 dollars. In Indian market, it could go up to Rs 50,000 per gm in the futures market. This almost-recession and high inflation-season has played out differently — and gold has hit a nine-month low to around $1730/oz, testing the lows it hit in September 2021, in the thick of the pandemic. While people are pulling out money from equities, they are going to an option that’s safeer yet holds better promise – US <keyword id="6374832" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="treasury" source="Orion">treasury</keyword> bonds. “The dollar index is at a multi-year high. The yields of US treasury bonds have gone up from around 1.5% to almost over 3%, and TIPS or treasury inflation protected securities too are multi year highs,” Chirag Mehta, CIO of Quantum AMC told Business Insider India – explaining where ‘gold money’ is flowing to. Money is flowing out of exchange traded funds or ETFs, and that indicates lower investor interest. It looks like gold is losing its appeal as an inflation hedge, opines Ravindra Rao, VP- head of commodity research at Kotak Securities. In the last few months, central banks across the world have tightened fists to control inflation — which is now cooling down thanks to fear of recession. “Ideally these factors should support it but now gold money is flowing into dollars, and steering investors away from it. Gold prices could remain below $1800/oz in the near future. Since it’s already falling, traders are waiting for it to fall more to invest,” explained Rao. According to him, little would change in the prices of gold before US inflation data comes in later week. More than just about dollars All the gold’s fall cannot be attributed to dollars and its investors only. Some of the effect could be because gold is going where most other commodities are — like crude oil. It has been falling on fears of increasing Covid-19 cases in China that can dent demand internationally. The same fears are weighing on gold as well. It’s not just international demand but domestic demand too reduced a little as the wedding season has come to an end. But not all experts think so. “I think gold demand is holding up well relative to other assets even though investments are now skewed towards the dollar,” said Mehta. According to Mehta, there are many more riskier assets than gold – like silver which is considered the poor cousin of gold as an investment class — but its fall has been higher. “Those who invested in silver are disappointed. Those who invested in Bitcoin are disappointed. I think all things considered, gold’s fall has been much less,” explains Mehta.
