<ul><li>Despite the economic slowdown, three Indian billionaires — <keyword id="3820" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mukesh-Ambani">Mukesh Ambani</keyword>, <keyword id="111343" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Gautam-Adani">Gautam Adani</keyword> and <keyword id="45051" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Uday-Kotak">Uday Kotak</keyword> continue to add billions to their fortune. </li><li>Mukesh Ambani added $4.1 billion to his wealth, according to Forbes. </li><li>Uday Kotak also added over $4 billion to his net worth. </li><li>Gautam Adani jumped from position eight on <keyword id="438043" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Forbes-rich-list">Forbes rich list</keyword> to position two. </li></ul>Life is good for billionaires. But three Indian billionaires had an exceptionally good year in spite of a slowdown. And, they are the usual suspects — Mukesh Ambani, Gautam Adani, and Uday Kotak. This year, 15 Indian billionaires lost over $1 billion, but the trio’s wealth grew substantially. Ambani, the chairman of India’s most valued companies added $4.1 billion to his net worth. Amongst others, his telecom venture seems to be paying off. As he added 340 million subscribers in three years of launch, his shareholders rewarded him handsomely. But it is not just Jio, revenues from Reliance Retail too grew at 47.5% to ₹38,196 crore in the quarter ending June 2019. The venture which was launched in 2015, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/mukesh-ambanis-reliance-retail-reports-over-47-growth-in-revenue/articleshow/70295939.cms">is now seeing the benefits of scale</a>, in the CFO’s own words. Uday Kotak, the billionaire promoter of <keyword id="46013" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kotak-Mahindra-Bank">Kotak Mahindra bank</keyword>, also added $4 billion to his net worth. All this is thanks to the government’s move to reduce the corporate tax rate from 30% to 22%, reported Forbes. His share value increased 39% in a year. India’s banking sector is under pressure because of loans which turned non-performing assets. According to Bloomberg, five of the 10<a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/markets/stocks/news/indias-bank-shares-are-ruining-value-buying-in-emerging-markets/articleshow/71482400.cms"> worst performing</a> financial firms on the MSCI Emerging Markets since May were from India. Kotak Mahindra Bank however is an oak in a forest of willows. In the first quarter of the year, the bank’s <a href="https://www.livemint.com/companies/company-results/kotak-mahindra-bank-q1-net-profit-rises-33-on-lower-provisions-1563795009867.html">profits rose 33%</a>, on lower provisions which is basically an indicator of good asset quality. Its net NPA also declined from 0.97% last year to 0.75% in 2019. All these factors and more helped the country’s third largest bank retain and even gain share value, helping Uday Kotak increase his wealth. The third gainer who bucked the slowed economic trend was Gautam Adani, who owns India’s largest private port at Mundra. Gautam Adani’s net worth increased from $8.7 billion in 2018 to $11.4 billion — all thanks to the new businesses he is venturing into. His position in the list also jumped from eight to become the second richest person on the list, in a year. He is venturing into new businesses like airport management, data centre parks, roads, water infrastructure, aerospace and defence. The growth of Adani Group between 2014 and 2019 can be attributed to the Indian government. Adani won 25 out of 126 bids government bids across the various industries of the group. Moreover, he also got clearance to kickstart its Australian coal mine project after 9 years of delay — bringing his massive $10 billion investment into the mine — to fruition. India's 100 wealthiest people together are worth $452 billion

New Delhi, Jan 6 () Ahead of the annual Union Budget presentation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday interacted with top business tycoons to discuss issues facing the economy and measures needed to boost growth and create jobs.
Richest Indian Mukesh Ambani, Tata group patriarch Ratan Tata, telecom czar Sunil Bharti Mittal, billionaire Gautam Adani, Mahindra Group chairman Anand Mahindra, and mining baron Anil Agarwal were among those present at the discussion.
Tata Sons chairman N Chandrasekaran, TVS chairman Venu Srinivasan, L&amp;T head AM Naik were also present, according to a photograph of the meeting released here.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present her second Union Budget on February 1 with an eye to reviving growth.
The latest GDP data for the July-September quarter showed a significant further moderation in the pace of economic growth to 4.5 per cent - the weakest in six years, with a key contributory factor being a slump in manufacturing output.
The Modi government has undertaken a number of measures to arrest the growth slowdown. In September 2019, it announced a cut in the corporate tax rate to 22 per cent from 30 per cent. The government also lowered the tax rate for new manufacturing companies to 15 per cent to attract new foreign direct investments. The tax rate reductions bring India in line with rates in other Asian countries.
The government's other initiatives include bank recapitalization, the mergers of 10 public sector banks into four, support for the auto sector, plans for infrastructure spending, as well as tax benefits for startups.
But experts say none of these measures directly address the widespread weakness in consumption demand, which has been the chief driver of the economy.
Also, financial sector fragilities continue to weigh on the economic growth momentum, with the high level of non-performing loans on the balance-sheets of the public sector banks, constraining their fresh lending.
Furthermore, there are also risks from potential contagion effects from troubled non-bank financial companies (NBFCs) to the balance-sheets of some commercial banks, which could further weigh on the overall pace of credit expansion.
In response to the growth slowdown, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has eased policy rates significantly during 2019, with a series of rate cuts since February 2019.
Further stimulus measures are expected in the upcoming Budget where the focus is likely to be on reforms, including some structural measures such as reducing red tape and boosting foreign direct investment.
The meeting with industrialists is in the series of discussions that Modi has had during the last couple of weeks to seek suggestions to revive growth.
In the previous meetings, he met Kotak Mahindra Bank CEO Uday Kotak, State Bank of India head Rajnish Kumar, HDFC Bank managing director Aditya Puri, IT industry veteran TV Mohandas Pai; former finance secretary Hasmukh Adhia; Tech Mahindra CEO CP Gurnani, Intel India general manager Nivruti Rai and Tata Consultancy Services chief executive Rajesh Gopinath.
He also reportedly has held one-on-one meetings with sectoral experts.

While HUL could have gained from it, that was not to be. Uday’s father Suresh Kotak, convinced him to open his own business at 300 sq. ft office space. The 23 year old kickstarted a financial consultancy to provide cheap loans to companies. When he started in 1985, the interest rates for loans were very high. On the other hand, depositors too gained next to nothing from banks and deposit rates were low. The legal troubles started over a decade back in 2008.
