If Jio succeeds, it will be the first carrier in the world to develop its own 5G technology instead of partnering with network providers like Nokia, Ericsson or Huawei. Reports of Jio developing 5G technology in-house have been doing the rounds since at least 2018, when it <a href="https://www.radisys.com/press-releases/reliance-industries-acquire-radisys">acquired</a> a US-based firm called Radisys which developed 5G and internet of things (IoT) technologies. Now, a new <a href="https://www.financialexpress.com/industry/reliance-jio-seeks-dots-permission-to-do-5g-lab-testing/1992508/">report</a> by Financial Express has revealed that Jio has filed a request to begin testing its 5G tech in its laboratories. This comes weeks after Airtel <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/telecom/news/airtel-signs-7636-crore-deal-with-nokia-to-enhance-4g-network-lay-foundation-for-5g-network/articleshow/75423000.cms">announced</a> its partnership with Finnish network provider Nokia to lay the foundation for its 5G network. Two of the biggest telecom companies in India with nearly 700 million subscribers could keep Huawei out of their 5G networks. India takes steps to keep China’s Huawei out of its 5G networks Amidst the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/defense/news/indian-army-on-india-china-war-in-galwan-valley-soldiers-killed/articleshow/76402297.cms">India-China border dispute</a>, the Indian government is <a href="https://telecom.economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/big-blow-for-zte-huawei-india-to-bar-bsnl-from-sourcing-chinese-gear-may-also-bar-pvt-telcos/76431279">said</a> to be considering the possibility of preventing telecom companies from using 5G equipment from Chinese companies Huawei and ZTE. It has already <a href="https://telecom.economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/big-blow-for-zte-huawei-india-to-bar-bsnl-from-sourcing-chinese-gear-may-also-bar-pvt-telcos/76431279">banned</a> BSNL and MTNL from using any new Huawei products for their 4G rollout. Jio uses Samsung’s tech for its 4G network throughout India, while Airtel and Vodafone Idea use Huawei's technology in some circles. With Jio working on its own 5G tech and Airtel teaming up with Nokia for 5G, this leaves Vodafone Idea which is in a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/telecom/news/vodafone-idea-appeals-supreme-court-to-stagger-spectrum-payments-over-20-years/articleshow/76440420.cms">precarious position right now</a>. Given the fact that it has not launched minor features like Wi-Fi Calling, it’s unlikely that the company will look at 5G technology anytime soon. Why does India want to keep Huawei out? Despite security concerns expressed by countries like the <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-huawei-tech-zte/huawei-zte-cannot-be-trusted-and-pose-security-threat-u-s-attorney-general-idUSKBN1XO2UJ">US</a> and <a href="https://techcrunch.com/2020/05/23/uk-government-reverses-course-on-huaweis-involvement-in-5g-networks/">UK</a>, the Indian government had <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/news/huaweis-survival-plan-is-off-to-a-good-start-as-india-clears-it-for-5g-trials/articleshow/73042042.cms">initially cleared</a> Huawei for 5G trials. The decision to ban Huawei and ZTE from BSNL and MTNL’s 4G networks was taken on June 17. Commercial rollout of 5G in India could take more than a year While Jio still has to test out its 5G technology, Airtel could get a head start since Nokia’s 5G solutions are already in use in several countries around the world. With that said, the commercial rollout of 5G networks in India could take more than a year. The government has not decided yet on the trials, and the 5G spectrum auction has <a href="https://telecom.economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/5g-spectrum-auction-likely-to-be-delayed-in-india-amid-covid-19-pandemic-report/75006522">reportedly</a> been pushed back to October-December 2020. The ET report states that the ban on Huawei and ZTE could lead to an increase of 10-15% in costs for procuring 5G gear. Reliance Jio 'develops a complete 5G solution from scratch', says Mukesh Ambani

"We are investors in the US in the energy sector and have invested $7 billion towards that," Ambani told Trump who replied, "$7 billion, yeah, big one." Reliance Industries trades fuel in North America and also has multiple investments in US shale gas projects. Ambani also told Trump that Reliance Jio is the only network in the world "that doesn’t have a single Chinese component." Trump replied with a chuckle, "Well, that’s good. Put a bid in." According to the company records, Jio has only partnered with non-Chinese equipment manufacturers like South Korea-based Samsung. The US and Trump especially, have famously been lobbying against the Chinese manufacturer Huawei’s 5G technology — alleging that the company shares data with its government. Indian car companies have an edge when it comes to right-handed diesel vehicles Anand Mahindra told Trump that his company has already invested $1 billion in the US and will happily invest another billion — if the contract with the United States Postal Services comes through. "Right now, we’re in the shortlist of the pick for the United States Postal Service new delivery van — a decision which should come by the end of the year. And when that comes through, we will very happily put in another billion and employ about 2,000 people," he said. "That’s a big business," Trump replied after finding out that the project involved the production of 180,000 vans. Although normal cars in the US have left-handed driving, postal vans need the steering wheel to be on the right. Mahindra pointed out that Indian automotive manufacturers are ideal for the project since they specialise in right-handed driving diesel vehicles. Protecting domestic manufacturing Lakshmi Mittal lauded Trump for saving the US steel industry. "Section 232 has been the big lesson for the rest of the world on how to support domestic manufacturing. And this is what we expect the other countries to learn: that they should support domestic manufacturing, not made in China," he said. Trump pointed out that aluminium and steel industries are integral to any country. "Steel you need, from a military — and aluminium you need. You got to have the aluminium. But steel you need probably more than anything else. You have to have it," he said. Going forward, Mittal noted that ArcelorMittal has plans to announce a multi-million dollar investment for a new steel plant, probably in the US state of Alabama. Technology in the US Salil Parekh told Trump that Infosys has invested around $525 million in the US market over the past two years creating 24,000 employees across six new centres. However, Mohan Reddy — founder of technology company Cyient — expressed concerns about administrative and legislative challenges that remain despite reforms. "We’re going to cut a lot more regulations. And, we’re going to also have regulations because I think you need regulation for safety and for the environment. But no President has ever cut anywhere close to what we’ve done." said Trump. Trump’s bid for getting re-elected When Ambani thanked Trump for his measure on making business easier in the US, the President said, "But if the wrong person gets elected, that won’t happen at all." He added that if he doesn’t get re-elected in the upcoming US Presidential Election, the unemployment in India will surge to 8 to 10%. China is threatening India into using its 5G technology

Guess who’s fuelling Modi’s ‘Make in India’ dream? Well, it’s none other than Mukesh Ambani. His venture Reliance Jio Infocomm has asked the handset makers to make 4G phones in India. If the manufacturers make phones in India, Reliance has agreed to buy all handsets and sell via them. 
 
Reliance Jio, which will be providing broadband Internet in India through LTE, will enable 4G connectivity. 
 
The telecom company is already planning to take this to the next level and is in talks with Micromax, Lava, Karbonn, Intex, and Lenovo. While some of the handset manufacturers are already setting up production base in the country, experts believe, this move will also help the manufacturers keep the phone prices reasonable as these will be manufactured locally. 
 
Micromax, Lava, Karbonn, and Intex are planning manufacturing units in India, with production set to commence in the next six months to a year. 
 
Jio has signed deals with Chinese handset makers Huawei, ZTE, Alcatel OneTouch (TCL Communications), CK-Telecom and Beijing Tianyu Communication Equipment-owned K-Touch for procurement of smartphones for the company's consumer electronics brand, ReConnect, which will sell 4G handsets across India. 
 
Devices under the ReConnect brand will be priced between 4,000 and 25,000, they said. Jio has said it would ensure availability of under Rs 5,000 4G smartphones coinciding with its services launch. 
 
The company had promised that if there was any gap between demand and supply of smartphones at a particular price level, it could bridge the gap with its own brand under Reliance Retail. 
 
Under the partnership with Jio, companies like Huawei, ZTE, and Alcatel OneTouch will also provide dongles, routers and other broadband products aimed at homes and small office or home office customers. 
 
Reliance Jio is expected to be launched in December this year.

Whereas, Reliance Jio has now begun with FTTH network dubbed as GigaFiber broadband and is offering services free till March 31, with a 100 Mbps data speed in select residential areas of Chennai, Pune and Mumbai regions. 
 
Deployed by Chinese gear maker Huawei, Airtel has commercially launched V-Fiber-based broadband services in eight cities that include Chennai, Mumbai, Pune, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Indore and Bhopal. It has plans to launch it in Delhi-NCR soon. 
 
Rohan Dhamija, head for India and South Asia at Analysys Mason, told ET home broadband makes sense for service operators only in high average revenue per user (ARPU) clusters in large cities. 
 
"FTTH makes a business case for high ARPU geographical clusters such as highrise residential buildings, while in India, overhead cabling is also done to address the existing right-ofway (RoW) challenges to accelerate such deployments,” he told ET. 
 
India's home broadband penetration is significantly low with only about 18 million connections and both the top telcos, Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio, have stiff competition with local rivals such as Hathway, Spectranet, Tikona and Nextra Teleservices.

Reliance Jio launches JioMeet app to take on Zoom

The government has sought product-wise details of cheap imports, comparison with domestic prices and tax disadvantage, if any, from industry to curb low quality inbound shipments especially from China and boost domestic manufacturing, sources said. They said a high level meeting to discuss ways to promote Atma Nirbhar Bharat (Self-reliant India), including cut in import dependence from China, also took place recently in the Prime Minister's office. Industry was asked to send comments and suggestions on certain number of goods and raw materials imported from China, which include wrist watches, wall clocks, ampoules, glass rods and tubes, hair cream, hair shampoos, face powder, eye and lip make up preparations, printing ink, paints and varnishes, and some tobacco items, one of the sources said. The other details sought include import surge data between 2014-15 and 2018-19; domestic prices of similar goods that are made here, domestic capacity, imports under free trade agreements, and inverted duty issue, if any. An industry source said that they are preparing their views on all those products and would soon send to the commerce and industry ministry. The exercise to reduce and curb imports from China assumes significance in the wake of border tensions between the two countries. China accounts for about 14 per cent of India's imports and is a major supplier for sectors like cell phones, telecom, power, plastic toys and critical pharma ingredients. The government has recently put import restrictions on tyres, while also making its prior approval mandatory for foreign investments from countries that share land border with India to curb "opportunistic takeovers" of domestic firms, following COVID-19 pandemic, a move which will restrict FDI from China. During April 2019-February 2020, India imported goods worth USD 62.4 billion, while exports to the neighbouring country stood at USD 15.5 billion in the same period. The main goods imported from China include clocks and watches, musical instruments, toys, sports goods, furniture, mattresses, plastics, electrical machinery, electronic equipment, chemicals, iron and steel items, fertilisers, mineral fuel and metals. India has time and again raised concerns over widening trade deficit with China which stood at about USD 47 billion during April-February 2019-20. The buzz at Davos Indian economy can be bigger than China Former RBI governor <a href="https://www.thequint.com/news/business/india-to-become-bigger-than-china-eventually-raghuram-rajan">Raghuram Rajan </a>has made big predictions for India at the event. Rajan said that India will soon surpass the <keyword id="5639169" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="economy-of-china">economy of China</keyword> and will lead the infrastructure development in South Asia. “India will become bigger than China eventually as China would slow down and India would continue to grow. So India will be in a better position to create the infrastructure in the region which China is promising today. But this competition is good for the region and it will benefit for sure,” he said. IMF’s advice for India’s finance minister IMF's Chief Economist Gita Gopinath has raised the <a href="https://www.bloombergquint.com/davos-world-economic-forum-2019/davos-2019-imf-chief-economist-gita-gopinath-on-global-growth-and-indian-economy#gs.3GOc0UrB">red flag for India</a> by calling out the risk associated with India’s high fiscal deficit. In an exclusive interview with <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/markets/expert-view/india-must-stick-to-fiscal-math-gita-gopinath-imf/articleshow/67634713.cms">ET now</a>, the IMF Chief said, “It is important for India to stay the course on fiscal consolidation. If you look at the aggregate deficit for India – combining the centre and the state deficits – has not improved much in the last five years. That is something that needs to be addressed.” However, The International Monetary Fund's (IMF) World Economic Outlook Update released by chief economist Gita Gopinath on Monday said that India's economy is expected to grow by 7.5 per cent in the 2019-20 fiscal year, keeping an upward trajectory as the rest of the world slumps. India to lead Industry 4.0 India presents a big opportunity with the fourth industrial revolution, declared Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP) Secretary Ramesh Abhishek. Speaking at a breakfast session titled 'Shaping India's future with Industry 4.0', organised by global consultancy giant Deloitte and industry body CII, the secretary said that India is fast adapting to new technologies and facilitating with policy framework to make way for industrial growth. ‘Chai pe charcha’ at Davos Indian tea is making a big appearance at the event with<a href="https://www.livemint.com/politics/news/from-hot-cups-of-tea-to-billboards-and-lounges-india-makes-a-mark-at-wef-1548080851695.html"> Tata Tea’</a>s participation at the WEF.
