Nadar retained his title as the most generous billionaire in India. He and Premji are only two billionaires who donated over ₹1,000 crore in FY23. Most of Nadar’s philanthropic endeavours, who gave away ₹5.6 crore per day, are centred around arts and culture. In fact, Nadar’s generosity is more than that of eight of his counterparts put together in the top 10 list, that includes India’s richest man, Mukesh Ambani. Premji is India’s second most generous man and his contributions went by 267% as compared to last year. “This is attributed to a significant 400% rise in dividend payouts by Wipro in FY23. An innovative strategy employed by Premji enables the trusts to benefit monetarily from the shares, while Premji retains the voting rights,” says Hurun. India’s richest man’s philanthropic outgo falls Mukesh Ambani is the third more generous man in India as he donated ₹376 crore in 2023, but his outgo fell by 8% as compared to last year. They cumulatively donated ₹8,445 crore – up 59% compared to last year, and 200% compared to three years back. “Wealth creation is important for economic development, while philanthropy is equally important for economic prosperity. This year is a record year for big philanthropy. Given India's potential for wealth creation and assuming a continued commitment to philanthropy by billionaires, I anticipate these figures to potentially double over the next five years,” said Anas Rahman Junaid, MD and chief researcher, Hurun India. In the past five years, the number of donors contributing over ₹100 crore has surged from two to 14, and those donating over ₹50 crore has risen from five to 24. But it has surprises too. Zerodha’s Nithin Kamath and Nikhil Kamath donated over ₹110 crore in their personal capacity with most of these funds going towards climate and sustainability. At 44 and 37 respectively, they’re also one of the youngest in the list. Manipal’s Ranjan Pai who is 50 years old donated 92 crore, towards education. The average age of India’s most generous philanthropists remains 60. Pai’s allocation went up 512% in the last one year. The other notable names amongst who donated their personal wealth are — A M Naik of L&amp;T who donated ₹150 crore; Sushmita and <keyword id="56651" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="subroto-bagchi" source="Orion">Subroto Bagchi</keyword> of Mindtree and Infosys’ Kris Gopalakrishnan and family. M A Yusuf Ali of Lulu Group also donated more in their personal capacity, and his allocation went up by 350% in FY23. “Cumulative personal donations have increased by 60% to reach ₹4,958 crore, constituting 70% of the total donations in the list. I am incredibly enthusiastic about the surge in personal philanthropy in India,” Junaid. In general, companies are also spending more as a part of corporate social responsibility (CSR). CSR spending of BSE 200 companies has been growing at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 15% in the last nine years. Their cumulative CSR spend grew from ₹5,561 crore FY15 to ₹12,271 crore in FY23. “Government, civil society, and the corporate are the three distinct pillars sustaining the nation-building process. CSR is moving away from cheque book charity donations to a more long-term strategic engagement,” Hurun says.

<keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> pacer <keyword id="1807915" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="mohammed-siraj" source="Orion">Mohammed Siraj</keyword> had reported a "corrupt approach" to BCCI's Anti Corruption Unit (<keyword id="159581" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="acu" source="Orion">ACU</keyword>) from an unknown person, who wanted "inside news" about his team before Australia arrived in the country for a full-fledged tour in February this year. The India pacer, who is playing for Royal Challengers Bangalore in the ongoing IPL, promptly reported the matter to BCCI's ACU unit. It is understood that the gambler had lost a lot of money during the India games and messaged <keyword id="261464" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="siraj" source="Orion">Siraj</keyword> out of sheer frustration. India had played white-ball home series against New Zealand and Sri Lanka in January-February before Australia arrived. India won the T20 series against Sri Lanka 2-1 before blanking them 3-0 in the ODI series. Against New Zealand, India won the ODI series 3-0 before triumphing in the T20 series with a 2-1 margin, with the Black Caps winning the lone game of the tour in Ranchi. "It wasn't a bookie who approached Siraj. He is a driver from Hyderabad who is addicted to betting on India matches. He had approached Siraj via WhatsApp after losing a lot of money on India games," a senior BCCI source privy to the developments told PTI on condition of anonymity. "Siraj reported the approach immediately. The law enforcement (Andhra Police) authorities had nabbed the person," the source added. The BCCI had beefed up its ACU network ever since the spot-fixing scandal, involving S Sreesanth, Ankeet Chavan, Ajit Chandila and then Chennai Super Kings (CSK) team principal Gurunath Meiyappan, was unearthed in 2013. Now, each IPL team has a dedicated ACU official who stays in the same hotel and is there at the ground monitoring all the movements. Also, there is a mandatory ACU workshop for players on the dos and don'ts, and if any player fails to report a corrupt approach, there are sanctions in place. Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan was suspended in 2021 for not reporting a corrupt approach during his IPL stint in the previous season. RCB are currently placed eighth with four points after two wins and three defeats. Siraj reported corrupt approach to BCCI ACU before Australia tour: BCCI source

The <keyword id="6354977" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="supreme-court" source="Orion">Supreme Court</keyword> will hear SEBIs petition, in an open court, seeking review of its August 5 judgment, which directed the market regulator to share certain documents with Reliance Industries Limited (RIL). A bench headed by Chief Justice U.U. Lalit and comprising Justices J.K. Maheshwari and Hima Kohli said: "Considering the facts and circumstances on record and the submissions advanced in the review petition, we deem it appropriate to allow application for listing of the instant petition in open court. Let this review petition be listed in court on October 12, 2022." <keyword id="35210" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="SEBI" source="Orion">SEBI</keyword> has refused to entertain RIL's request to share the privileged documents on the grounds that under the Sebi (Settlement Proceedings) Regulations, the accused company has no right to seek information from it. The <keyword id="6356229" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="apex-court" source="Orion">apex court</keyword>, in its judgement, had rejected this stand of the market regulator. RIL had claimed that documents will exonerate it and its promoters from criminal prosecution initiated in a case related to the alleged irregularities in acquisition of its own shares between 1994 and 2000. Last week, a bench headed by Justice Sanjiv Khanna had recused from hearing RIL's petition seeking to initiate contempt proceedings against SEBI for failing to provide certain documents to the company. On August 5, a bench led by then Chief Justice N.V. Ramana had said: "The approach of SEBI, in failing to disclose the documents, also raises concerns of transparency and fair trial. Opaqueness only propagates prejudice and partiality. Opaqueness is antithetical to transparency." The top court had said the market regulator should show fairness and furnish documents sought by RIL, and SEBI has a duty to act fairly, while conducting proceedings or initiating any action against the parties. RIL filed a contempt petition as SEBI has not shared three documents -- the two legal opinions by former apex court judge B.N. Srikrishna and former ICAI president Y.H. Malegam's report which examined the irregularities. The company claimed SEBI cannot continue to resist the production of these documents and it had also sent a notice to the regulator saying if documents were not received by August 18, then it will establish that SEBI does not want to comply with the apex court's judgment. In 2002, Chartered Accountant S. Gurumurthy filed a complaint with SEBI alleging irregularities by RIL, its associate companies and their directors/promoters, including <keyword id="3820" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="mukesh-ambani" source="Orion">Mukesh Ambani</keyword> and his wife, Nita; <keyword id="9171" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="anil-ambani" source="Orion">Anil Ambani</keyword> and his wife, Tina; and 98 others. This is partly due to the fact that the 20-25% hike in November last year has been absorbed completely now, and telcos need to increase their ARPUs. The recent 5G spectrum auctions are also another trigger for telcos to hike tariffs as they seek to offset the large capex outlay. A report by IIFL Securities says that both Reliance Jio and Airtel could see a 12% growth in mobile revenue in the first six months of 2023 – the unsaid laggard is Vodafone Idea, which will continue to lose subscribers. “Post spectrum auction, we expect the relative positioning of top two telcos – Jio and Airtel – to get strengthened further with churn odds for VIL increasing as the services coverage/capacity of Jio/Airtel would be better,” the ICICI Direct report added. Analysts at Goldman Sachs sounded a bullish note, saying, “With our expectation of a tariff hike before end-CY22 and the additional benefit of lower SUC (spectrum usage charge) starting Sep ‘22, we forecast Bharti’s wireless segment to deliver 22% FY22-24E revenue CAGR.” A Nomura report also said a 4% tariff hike would be sufficient to cover for the 5G spectrum wins. Even in India, 5G smartphones have become quite popular, despite the fact that the commercial rollout of 5G is yet to begin in the country. Telcos have warned that this move would not only delay the rollout of 5G smartphones in the country, this could also impact India’s goal of becoming a global hub for smartphone manufacturing. The telcos have said that local testing and certification of 5G smartphones will bring down the availability of 5G smartphones as testing and certification will require a lot of time. This move comes at a time when <keyword id="6354504" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="reliance-jio" source="Orion">Reliance Jio</keyword>’s <keyword id="3820" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mukesh-ambani" source="Orion">Mukesh Ambani</keyword> has called for 5G rollout to become a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/telecom/news/mukesh-ambani-calls-for-5g-roll-out-in-india-asks-it-to-be-national-priority/articleshow/88160233.cms">national priority</a>. The TEC had earlier called for local testing and certification of all smartwatches, smart cameras and wearables being sold in India. As per the report, the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), which includes Airtel, Reliance Jio, Vodafone Idea, Ericsson, Nokia and others has written a letter to K. Rajaraman, the telecom secretary. “We urge your intervention to instruct TEC to rescind the existing notifications covering all existing consumer electronic products under the MTCTE Certification regime and to desist in pursuing smartwatches, wearables, and smart cameras under Phase III and 5G mobile phones under the proposed Phase V of MTCTE,” COAI said in the letter.
